Paid with points and I feel like we got the worst room in the place. Very loud, well into the night coming from both inside and outside. Asked for a room away from the elevator, were given a room directly across from the elevator, and the ice machine. The room faced Mandalay Ave. so the sounds of traffic, car stereos, sirens, drunken escapades from the multiple bars across the street lasted well into the early hours of the AM each night. I understand that this comes with the territory, but the sliding glass door sealed so poorly it didn't even keep the wind out so it's chances of keeping noise at bay were slim.
The hotel nickel and dimes you for everything. $20 for continental breakfast, $25 per day to park, ~$100 (after tax) per day for 2 beach chairs and an umbrella. You also pay a $25 per day "resort fee" that gets you 1 pool towel per person, per day, an hour of yoga, an hour of bicycle usage, and a picture that is essentially an opportunity for them to upsell you into buying more pictures. You decide if that represents value or not. For me it did not.
The birds on the beach, at the beach bar, and at the outside dining areas are extremely aggressive. As in, snatching food off people's plates while people were sitting at the table. They have no fear of people whatsoever. The pool area has some lines strung across it to deter the birds from landing, but there is nothing in the other areas and I would never eat outdoors there. If you have a drink with fruit on the glass you need to keep an eye on that as well as I watched birds snatch lemon and lime wedges off glasses when a person turned thier back briefly. I also watched two birds attack a table when the guest went to the bathroom. They grabbed food off both plates and were all over the table. A waiter chased them off, sort of, but his solution was to cover the plates with a napkin and leave. The second he left the birds moved the napkin and were back at it. Take the plates away?
Wait for the guest to come back? Nope. The second a bird saw any food a flock appeared and the person or people trying to eat were under siege. It would be impossible to enjoy a leisurely meal.
The valet was extremely slow at checkout. Called down to have them pull the car up, waited 5 minutes for them to answer the phone and get me off hold. I took my time getting downstairs (~5 minutes) and then waited 20 more minutes to finally get my car. All told about a half an hour. Again, it was busy, I understand, but none of the staff (except ONE valet) were obviously hustling to get cars and there was a LONG queue of people waiting for them at this point. Lots of valets walking and standing around. It got to the point that they started handing keys back to guests so they could find their cars themselves. Keep in mind that the guests had no idea where their cars had been put or if they had been blocked in.
