Stop and you'll get lost for sure. Plan a whole day for this wonderful bookstore. They have something on pretty much every topic and loads of fun gift ideas near the front. Not to mention the attached coffee shop. :)
A must see in Portland.

A fully awesome store in its own right! Sometimes you may even find the book you're looking for here instead of at Burnside, since it probably gets less foot traffic (this happened to me with Alderman's The Power).

I've been going to this Powell's branch since the early 90's. It's not quite the experience of their giant store down town, but hey... It's still Powell's: the greatest bookstore in North America.

I went to pick up an order that I placed for pick up and the lady was a real jerk. Horrible attitude and she should not be in retail if she has no customer service skills. It is the holidays and people should be kinder and civil. Powell's needs to hire nicer people, not just stuck up people who have negative attitudes towards people they have to help. This is the 3rd time I have encountered rude people at this shop. Amazon just gained another customer. Sorry.

Best place to get rare used books. Was not happy with the speed of online orders however. Disappointed that they dont due store to store transfers. The book i wanted was at cedar hills and they wont send it to hawthorn. I have to purchase a 6$ book online and have it shipped. Next time, im just gonna pay the $10 amazon wanted for an Ebook version.

Well it is a bookstore and good knows I spend enough time and money in them. New and used books, millions of them, reasonablely priced. I will continue to go back again and again. And I have been going to Powell's for 40 years.

Books, coffee, books, what's not to like? Old fashioned store with aisles and aisles of books. Not as crowded as the mother ship on Burnside, either (different, not necessarily better--it depends what you're looking for).

It's really nice to have so many books and gifts under the same roof. Their technical books are in a different location, though. I love the way new and used books are right together, so if you find one you want, you can save a few bucks by buying used.

What a cool funky neighborhood and how nice to have another Powell's so I didn't have to find parking downtown! Smaller selection than the main branch of course but that suited me just fine. I was on the look-put for something by a local Portland author; vaguely I wanted something that had to do with sewing or other creative crafty stuff...but not a how-to book. Didn't think I'd find something fitting these picky requirements but there it was! Lisa Congdon! Of course!

Anyway there's also a nice little cafe on the side, helpful staff members, and a nice selection of merch.

The two-part Powell's on Hawthorne is easily more accessible than the Burnside Behemoth. We usually spend a good bit of time in the Home and Garden store, where quirky kid and adult gifts also find a home, before heading to the 'other' Hawthorne location (just a few doors away) and getting coffee and browsing adult fiction and kids materials.

Delightful branch of Powell's bookstore. It's quiet and we'll stocked. The cafe is pleasant, with low lighting and soft ambient music. Less foot traffic than the City of Books in Southwest Portland. Be sure to visit the home and garden storefront next door.

The gold standard of bookstores as far as I'm concerned. My only complaint is the large crowd that seems to constantly be there from open to close, however it is well staffed and set to handle it. I've never had to wait more than a few minutes to check out even when the line appears dauntingly long. I especially like the book buying staff who with only one exception are all friendly, knowledgeable, and super helpful.

A wonderful bookstore. They have worked hard to provide a safe shopping experience. The employees were helpful and friendly. The book selection is excellent. Support your local independent bookstore.

Terrible customer service from the appraiser's it was almost as if they didn't want us there. We came in to sell quite a few books and they were obviously offended by the fact that we came in a half hour before close. The last time I checked you do your job until your business is closed. If it's such a hassle that I came in at 7:30 then maybe your closing time should be 7:30. Won't be returning.

Amazing, definitely a place to go if your from out of town. One of three in Portland and one of four total. Amazing atmosphere definitely a great place to find new and used books, grab a coffee, or just sit and read.

Powell's City of Books is the largest bookstore in Portland but the Hawthorne location is still my favorite. The staff is more welcoming. The selection is less overwhelming. The layout is more inviting. It all adds up to a more comfortable, more familiar bookstore feel. It just fits me better. I love this place. Make sure you pick up a cup of their excellent coffee or tea and take some extra time to browse the specials in the main aisle. Always a good bet.

Staffed (with a few exceptions) by arrogant, unsmiling people who should be doing something other than retail. Basically the same reason that I try to avoid the main branch. That said, they do have an excellent selection of books.
