It's like something from Harry Potter-it's way big...

Awesome book store. Great selection of used and new. I was especially impressed with the sci fi section, and a section of DnD players manuals.
Takes forever to ship things... my order that was one book has taken over a month.
Cute little budget version of big girl Powell's downtown. But both have great selections.
Best bookstore in the world, and this one is a little bit better than dealing with downtown traffic. Unfortunately you're dealing with lack of parking.
This neighborhood outpost of Powell's is as wonderful as the original. Staff are helpful and the selection of books is easy to access.
Powells has lots of books and a great selection, however this can also be found on the internet and you don't have to deal with the incredibly rude customer service. When selling and purchasing books the clerks didn't look up, nor greet us and treated us with contempt. We spoke to a manager, Chip, and our concerns were met with disregard, disinterest and frankly he was one of the clerks we felt treated us disrespectfully. If you've got a lot of money, flannel and glasses and want to pay more for books while feeling very "Portlandia" (the tv show) this is the place for you.
Went here instead of downtown. Not as big but there are people available to help. Parking was much easier and the neighborhood is really cool. Lots of things to see in this area.
cool offshoot! nice mix of used and new books, and killer selection of indie press stuff--and zines!
I absolutely love Powell's Books because of it's warm environment and amazing books! A couple things I like about it is it's summer Reading program, where you read a certain number of books and get even more book buying opportunities! I also think that their new/used system works fantastically. If you don't need your books anymore you can give them to Powell and they will give you Powell's book money! I love this because it gaurantees that Powell's has old books. I like that is also buys new books because, where else are you going to get your "To All The Boys I've Loved Before"? I think that the way Powell's sets up their sections is phenomenal. I love looking through Bestsellers, OBOB, Young Adults, Horro and many more! Thank you for being there for me on a rainy Sunday afternoon Powell's!
Such a wide selection! From Comic Books to Non-Fiction! The space was large but welcoming still. The young adult section was well-done too, filled with employee reviews. The coffee shop attached was delicious and as I struggled with my kiddo, the barista was kind and patient. I always stop here on my trips to Portland, and each time leave excited to read!
A huge book selection and nice layout of the store.
It is a branch of Powell's. It is a venerable branch, but not as big as their downtown store. Lots of sections, lots of variety.
You might want to check their website first if you are looking for a specific book, but if you are just browsing this store is a more manageable size.
Not a good place to sell anything except brand new books
always find what i'm looking for, and usually stuff i didn't know i wanted
Parking is the only drawback, altho Freddies roof parking works since I usually have something to buy there too.
A Portland staple. Powell's regularly has authors speak, and they are free to go see. Powell's sells a huge range of new and used books and is an important part of Portland culture.
Smaller than the downtown store so they have less books but still a healthy selection of fiction.
They don't have as many books as Powell's HQ on Burnside, but if you're looking for a quainter browsing experience then this may be it. The staff's friendly, the books are well organized, and there's an attached coffee shop - it's easy to spend an hour or two here.
There is no parking lot, so be prepared to park on the street and walk. Go into the home store as well as the bigger one it is a few doors down. It is super cute and filled with lots of adorable knick knacks.
Smaller, less overwhelming than the Mothership, but still great
Love Powell's. This location is quiet and the staff is awesome.
Lots of books. I want there to sell some books and they offered me squat won't go there again
always my go to book store. i can always find what i am looking for and then some! a must for all
Great place to sit and read while drinking hot cafe. Clean, no one bothers you or trying to upsell you with every purchase you make. I highly recommend this book store above all the rest.
I should probably just set up my direct deposit to go straight to them, I spend all my money here anyway.
If you like books, this is your jam. With good pricing, you'll always be surprised at what you find. Friendly staff and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, this is always a certain visit when I'm in Portland.
Went in expecting to buy a book or two. Left with 11. Oops?
A mecca for the bibliophile, Portland's Powell's City of Books is just that--a city block comprising thousands of square feet on multiple floors wherein over a million volumes of text reside.
Whether one wants to buy 10 books for $10 or one book for $10,000 in the rare book room, you are certain to find what you are looking for here-- and if their stacks on the Burnside Avenue Powell's do not contain your treasured tome, they will surely be able to point you to one of their other locations in the city or their website online.
In addition to being a venue for shopping, Powell's also offers opportunity for relaxation in that their cafe is ideal for perusing that graphic novel, poetry anthology or World War II history at no cost to yourself--and with no required purchase. Indeed, Many a patron chooses to relax and play game of Othello or chess, or scroll out their innermost thoughts in their journals while the always-busy stacks are abuzz with browsers.
For years I would hand out maps of this bookstore to my literary-minded friends back in the Midwest so as to booster this beloved Temple of the Word--warning them every time, " if you're lucky enough to go one day, use the map--because you'll surely need it... Indiana Jones couldn't find his way out of that place without injuring his handsome noggin..."
And look out for those bargain bins near the cashiers... because you may think you don't need that $5 edition of "Moby Dick"...but you really do, don't you?
much smaller but the same premise as the city of books. good location and very kind employees
When I don't have hours to browse the main store, this is a great alternative. They have a fantastic selection, friendly service and a great attached coffee shop.
Great book store. It is not as big as the one downtown but still worth going to
Who doesn't love Powell's? I like the Hawthorne location because it feels more homey to me.
Great selection of books. Lousy parking. Got one book wanted, but they didn't have the other wanted. Still, great place for book lovers
