I had the opportunity to attend the ER since a family member of mine developed an adverse reaction to one of the medicines prescribed by the PCP.It was an acute alteration in mental status, so per protocol, they placed an order of "1013".and CT of head and some labs were ordered. A sedative was given prior to the CT too. After the CT and labs were done , we are waiting for the results. I saw a personnel sitting outside the room, the badge said Amanda from "Sitter Pool".The stretcher was too flat and I wanted the head to be elevated (no pillow on the stretcher), she gave me instructions how to pull on some frame and do it, she didn't get up from her chair or iphone. Whatever I did, didn't work, then I got my son to help with it and she did the same( pull and lift or whatever.) My son was able to lift it up finally. During our almost 9 hour stay in the ER, BP was taken twice. When the labs came back, it said "dehydration " as the significant change, The pt. is sedated, not drinking, we had to ask if any IV fluids will be given. Meanwhile , we never saw an MD, an NP Jason came by who liked like he was interrupted from whatever he was doing and rushed back after some comments like "I was not there with you all, so tell me what happened".When we requested for a doctor, a real doctor came and ordered some iv fluids. But , now the RN is on lunch break, we didn't know that Gwinnett Medical gave RN's lunch break for more than an hour without coverage. Finally , the RN came back and started the IV fluids. Now, its 3 pm, shift change, a group of youth are with sitter Amanda, they are laughing and talking so loudly that I got up and closed the door half way. This pt. was given a sedative, if you have common sense, you will keep your voice down, she told me that I can't close the door , she has to see the pt, so I told her to keep noise level down. When the pts need help, no support staffs available to assist them at all, no one to empty the urinal etc. I saw a family member of another pt getting frustrated too. It is not that they were that busy, we did see the pt flow. Thank God, they did have a very compassionate MD on duty that day. He was very patient, explained everything as needed. Its unfortunate that healthcare has become like this.
