To see how a castle was built in the Middle Ages is very impressive for us! Since you can get right up to the workplaces and the craftsmen working there are very friendly and knowledgeable you can take a good look at everything. A small, newly built water mill can be visited. Everything authentically built and fully functional. We all liked it so much that the 1300 kilometers journey was really worth it. There are also a few craft stalls that do not belong directly to the castle. More craft stalls would make the illusion better. In the souvenir shop, there are very few nice things to buy. Also, all not belonging to the castle buildings are very nice, but the supply of food and drinks rather reminiscent of a motorway service area. The alchemist who performs a very good and funny program is very worth seeing and I have not seen anything comparable here in Germany. The crux of the matter is awesome and we recommend that anyone interested in history drive there once!

Very beautiful and super interesting to visit, but pricey: 15 euros for adults and 12 euros for a child up to 17 years old but definitely worth a visit for those interested in the Middle Ages.

A challenge of madness!

A challenge of madness!

-Heart of History (Bachelor of History, Master History - Archeology - evolution of Christianity and religions in the High Middle Ages), my Friend has always been eager to see for herself this unique experimental project and completely crazy :
rebuild a castle from the medieval period with the methods of the 13th century (late 12th - early 14th) Philippian style; while respecting the safety standards - working of our time.

The goal of the game is to improve the knowledge of historians, archaeologists and other specialists in Castellology to better understand / understand the workings.

Having studied Archeology, my Friend finds the principle (to do all the reverse of an Archaeologist) hallucinating and rich in teachings (recreating the missing know-how thanks to the incorporation of the various workers on the site: companions , apprentices ... Or accomplished craftsmen, Masters of work, MH - coming to add a string to their bow).

We moved for a big half-day, be aware that you have to come a full day (for people who really care) to really enjoy it.

-The workers:

Interesting to see the work (even for a novice like me ^ _ ^), this project really helps to better understand the life and organization of the time, logistics and sociology of an era.

-The people on the site are quite available, the various workshops and stages of the castle can take care of.
The guided tour is very good (a specialist at the controls).
The projects evolve, are added to the base castle to tend towards an idea of extended village (water mill, chapel, port, market ...) which could well rise from ground to reinforce the basic idea and constitute a unique approach of its kind.

I had read that for some it was "Disney", we can confirm the opposite:
except be narrow-minded, do not understand the purpose of the animations and other "micro-financing"; it is not an amusement park.
And if these bonuses help to build a city in the medium term, then we will return regularly to follow the evolution (as well as being a builder to participate in this great adventure).

-> If you are looking for rides and a park of the kind it is not here that you have to come.

To build to understand is the motto of this place. These builders use medieval methods, tools and equipment to build this castle. The result is magnificent. Talk with all the workers on the site is very rewarding. I hope to see the final result, .... in 8 years.

Excellent visit! Friendly welcome, smiling volunteers. The castle has made good progress ... for twenty years! And hurry up because in 5 years it will be over! Otherwise for info the toilets and the site are very clean, and there are 3 charging stations for electric vehicles. We had a great day!

A magnificent place where you can appreciate the work of men to see with children counted a full day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to take full advantage of all the workshops
Small black spot lack of staff at the restaurant and snack bar more than 3/4 hours waiting for something to eat or drink

very interesting but beware it is all the same a "building site" with medieval techniques so young children are not a good idea and suitable shoes are necessary (sand pebbles etc. not compatible with sandals) access to people with reduced mobility can be difficult but not infeasible

I introduced my grandson.
I go there every 2 or 3 years since the start of this adventure in 1998.
What a feat that is awesome and unique.

An unforgettable experience despite a biting frenzy !! Too bad the dining rooms are not closed (no windows) and do not offer the opportunity to warm up the meal time. The site is beautiful but to avoid with small children on very cold days. Congratulations to the enthusiasts who work on site and take the time to share their experience.

Exciting to see work as in the past.

Exciting to see work as in the past.
According to the workshops, if there are not too many visitors and if the companion is well disposed, we learn a lot.
It's good for young and old.
If you can go in the calm season, it should be even better.

Very beautiful and all handmade in the old fashioned way, beautiful work and interesting to be able to discuss with the craftsmen. And the possibility of being able to book a picnic in advance is very practical

Very pleasant staff, especially at the reception. Super interesting visit. The castle workers take the time to explain their work and tell part of the story. The history of the mill is very interesting and the touch of humor makes it even more alive. I thought there would be a few more animals: there were a few geese, 2 ponies with 1 donkey, a horse pulling a carriage and other horses in the box (which we cannot approach).

It was really great. Well done.
