Grand Portage Lodge & Casino Review

This was a very beautiful large and a very quiet place to come see Lake Superior

If you are looking for a place to grab a greate burger, fries and more. Try Grand Portage Deli.

Great Hotel. New Furniture, great location on the bay, close to other activities besides gambling. Casino was clean, not smoky. Staff in both casino and hotel were first class.

Bottom line, come for the gambling and sites, but stay for the hotel.

OK. No cards, lake view rooms not so great.... appropriate for pricing, not bad if you cant find a place in Grand Marais

Only visited to view the renovationstatus of the casino. Not impressed and 20$ gone in 5 minutes. Machines remain tight, I guess to pay for renovations. Will not visit again. Will keep my money in local casino!!

Earlier today my grandmother and I went to the Island View restaurant at Grand Portage, we both order half salads, mine was a Oriental chicken salad and my grandmother had the south west salad. They were both terrible, first her salad had no dressing on it. As soon as we dug into our salads we noticed that it was all very hard and it looked like the last bit of a head of ice burg lettuce was pulled apart a little and thrown on our plates. The pieces that were green were very soggy and dark. Neither of us ate our salads so I asked for a take out because I didn't want to just waste it so I thought I would try to pick at it at home, once I put my salad into the take out dish I noticed that the bottom was so full of dressing the whole bottom of the salad was mush. So I asked to speak to a manager to see if we could have the salads taken off our bill because they were inedible. After 10 minuets the manager comes out and we explain what happened. She didn't offer any type of apology or even a smile, she quickly said she was going to go talk to our server and left for another 10 minuets, once she came back she said "these are your two options, we can give you a small discount on your meal or replace it" since we had already been there for quite some time we didn't want another salad as we didn't have time. We also didn't want to pay for something we couldn't eat. So she left again to talk to the "kitchen supervisor" and returned about 5 minuets later telling us "so ether you can take the small discount or we can call security and you won't be allowed back in the restaurant or casino ever again" after that I started to get a little aggravated as she is now threatening us that we can pay for the food we were unable to eat due to the lack of freshness or we will be banned. She also told me "the reason our food was soggy was because once there's dressing on that tends to happen" she also told me the reason we have to pay is because " I asked for a take out container so obviously it couldn't have been that bad if I was going to take it home"I told her I would like to speak to another manager or anyone else that wouldn't be rude and unreasonable. She pointed at herself and smiled and said very obnoxiously "I am the manager". I then repeated that we will not pay for our food as it was gross and looked like it had been sitting there for hours. She then called security and I asked the guard if there was someone else I could speak to because I was tired of dealing with the "managers" terrible customer service skills and after about 20 minuets someone came to talk to me, the rude manager was standing there with her arms crossed smirking at me while I was talking to her superior as if I was the one in the wrong. Once the lady and I were don't speaking she went to speak with the restaurant manager and the manager yells through the door "you guys have a great day now" and laughed. A few moments later the nice lady came back and spoke with us and apologized and agreed that she handed the situation very terrible and they will not make us pay for something we could not eat, we were also informed that the rude manager had told the lady we ate "quite a bit of our meal" witch we only ate a few bites of before we lost our appetites, and that the rude manager doesn't have authority to tell people they will be banned and isn't actually the manager at all. Unfortunately I was unable to get the "managers" name but I'm sure if anyone has ever had the pleasure of dealing with her they'll know exactly who I am talking about.

Only had slots when I was there no black jack. Restaurant was closed.

Fun place. The staff are great!!!! The upper management however, are unkind to their employees! Please treat them with respect.

Service in the restraunt was very lacking. The waitress that seated us wasnt friendly and made you feel like you were bothering her. After the meal, the same waitress saw that we were waiting to pay and walks the other way...she eventually showed, didnt ask how our meal was. Ill opt to eat at the gas station, which is the only other option for the area.

Hotel room was very nice and updated, if your able to read, it's not hard to navigate throughout all the construction. Casino seems to pay out good. My wife and I came out of there with an extra $300 in our pockets!! To any of the people who whined and moaned about all the smoking, get over it, it's a casino for pete's sake. If you don't like it, don't go there. Simple as that. I'll definitely be back!

It's a sad little casino at the border of Canada/US, overflowing with those older folks from both sides of the border, who have either nothing better to do, or are still optimistic, or just love the cheap but good casino buffet, or for all these reasons.

Located near a beautiful lake, has a nice lawn leading to the lake , with playhouse for small children. If you are passing by, and need a night halt, just stay here for that, if nothing else.

Great rooms on lakeside. Beds were very comfortable. Restaurant had great food at excellent prices. Bar personal were fun and helpful, gaming was great

Just stopped by to fill up on food and bathroom break. Coming from a smoke free state, It was odd being asked if I wanted to sit in a smoking or non smoking section for the restaurant, so lower rating due to the fact I had to walk through other peoples smoke coming and going to my table or the restrooms. They had nice staff, and ready with crayons for the kids, along with nice clean restrooms. We even saw a small playground from the windows of the restaurant facing the waterfront with a wonderful view of the lake.

Brand new remodeled casino with a lot up to date slots and black jack tables.

I stayed at the campground for two nights. The sites are large and some have a lake view. The sites have full hookups, but basically this is open field. The wifi mostly goes on and off and I had zero phone service from Verizon. Included, is the use of the hotel pool, hot tub and sauna. The pool is a little warmer than Lake Superior and the high pitched noise from the HVAC in the pool area is very annoying. So I notified maintenance and was told nothing can be done about the HVAC. And the pool was heated, but not set at 90. The pool area is nice, but wasn't cleaned for my two day stay. The floors around the pool were dirty. Also some trash and towels were on the floor from the day before. The newer shower in the men's room has mold and rust around the base. It's gross!

It was a bit on the small side which was actually a plus. Came out a little ahead.

We waited 30 minutes for our food. My hamburger was overcooked. Smoking is allowed and it is disgusting. We wont be back.

Great environment but there snack shop has become pricey. Restaurant has good food.

Should have some type of cell phone booster on the property. Resturant staff needs training food is good and prices are good also. Strange a local caught fish meal is more then a steak? Clean rooms nice facility.

Not a very nice stay we spent 15.00in the casino and then to gind out they had charged me twice and tryed taking it out for the 3rd time

The restaurant has been remodeled with an improvement in the food. If you don't like the stink of tobacco, stay out of the casino.

Things were a bit spendy, but that's to be expected given the remoteness of the establishment. The recent remodel was well done and the location is just gorgeous.

Located less than an hour south of Thunder bay Ontario this Casino is the only one worth going to in the area.

Clean updated rooms and a newer looking pool and spa area from this recently remodeled hotel. They have onsite restaurants that cover most waking hours and provide cheap, decent options. The food won t win any culinary prizes however. Room rates are also pretty cheap depending on season.

Had a great time there! No buffet! Beautiful area! Trying to make it a yearly event!

Good place to stay near the US-Canada border for those folks who can't get a cabin. This is decent enough place and I strongly recommend non-smoking rooms.

Clean rooms and good location but they didn't have a crib for my little one. I would say not so kid friendly.

Great place to stay. Rooms are very nice and the great part is, they are clean. Staff is friendly and helpful. The Lake Superior view is beautiful. Definitely going to stay again!

Non smoke casino isn't part of the main building. Overall rooms are very meh

Drove there from where I was staying in Tofte, MN to check out the casino. The casino is small and has only slot machines, no card tables. The casino/resort and a gas station (trading post), along with the historic center down the road, are the only things in that town other than abundant nature. I felt like I wasted my day driving to and from.

We had a wonderful lunch. We ordered two pretty basic things: club sandwich with fries and a burger with a salad. Food was very well prepared, seasoned, generous portions. My salad was crisp, had lots of veggies. Our server was quite friendly and very conscientious about cleanliness and social distancing. Highly recommend.

Smoking and none smoking was not separated in the restaurant. Casino gaming floor was small. Need new pillows in the rooms. Nice view of the lake.

Worst place I have ever been to. Tried to go to buffet, lady wrote your first name and number in group, said they would page when ready, waited 2hrs hours and never a page. Don't waste your time coming to this place. Drive up north shore was nice.

There was construction. We still won money, no cards table, only slots and not very many.

Very nice place to stay, eat, and gamble. I understand that the casino probably needs to be a smoking environment but the fact that there was smoking everywhere in the building was what dropped me down to 3 stars and that was generous. The restaurant was excellent except that the no smoking section still got smoke when the kitchen door was open. The room we stayed in was a non smoking room and it was clean and very comfortable.

The newly renovated rooms are beautiful, comfortable beds and the new pool is perfect and it's nice that the sauna, hot tub, bathrooms and washrooms are in the same area along with vending machines for the kids. Complementary towels available as well. Best feature I love is the security card access only for room guests. Evelvator and wheel chair accessible. And spacious for strollers and wheelchairs.

Still remodeling, but at $49 on a Sunday night- I couldn't complain! Room was clean, tidy, renovated nicely! Quiet enough, too. Pillows and linens and mattress much much better than $49/night. Much. Excited to come back eventually and see the renovations completed! HVAC comfortable and shower "hotel" hot- due to accidental burns it's unlikely any lodging could ever get hot enough for me. The casino cashier could have broken a smile, a greeting, or any sign of life or interest...but, I shook it off to her having a long day and moved on. I'll be back when I'm in the neighborhood again.

Really enjoy the location, away from everything. Rooms nicely remodeled, and they do a good job with all the construction going on. Service good and very friendly.

Nice little place to dump some money. Friendly staff. Good security. Not bad. If you are near the minnesota/Canadian border and want to gamble. Its a very nice place. If you really have the itch... Remember.. There isn't another casino around for miles and miles and miles. If there is, ahhh don't tell my wife.

Hotel has been renovated and the rooms and casino are beautiful! The pool and hot tub are awesome and they are even accessible with a chair lift to lower them into the pool. Restaurant always has great food!

After eating there, I told a friend it had been overwhelmingly mediocre. They pointed out that I was being quite kind. I agreed. It's like eating on an international flight in coach.

They have good food in the restaurant and the gaming floor is a good size.
