Grand Portage Lodge & Casino Review

Very small casino, rooms could have been a little cleaner, remodeling going on that is not mentioned on website. Nice pool area with hot tub and sauna. Restaurant was pretty terrible, waited to be seated, waited to be greeted and have our order taken, and then waiiiiited for our food only for most of it to be cold. We were all looking forward to some poutine, but it was terrible. DO NOT order the chicken wild rice soup, it was like water with some rice in it Also, there is no music in the restaurant so you pretty much have to whisper so the whole place can't hear you. Oh and the smoking section is on the other side of the room, no divider or anything. I certainly hope the dining room is next on the list for a remodel, it needs it. I shouldn't have paid the extra $10 for a Lakeview room either, as it was not all that breathtaking from our ground floor room. There's only 3 floors here.

Great view on the lake. Clean spacious rooms and friendly staff. Good food and overall good Atmosphere. Only bad thing the pool was out of order and we could not get into the workout room! Otherwise very nice place to relax.

Took my grandchildren on a drive down the North shore and we spent a night here. No complaints on room or restaurant.........just wasn't too impressed with all the dog poop everywhere outside...couldn't even walk down path to lake without almost stepping in feces. And terrible on lawn by playgorund equipment.

Great food, they took good precautions. I loved the room. I loved how polite people were. Although I did not like the limited hours the casino was open & it's a non smoking casino now. I do plan to visit again though. I loved the hospitality

The resort is absolutely gorgeous with its spot right alongside Lake Superior. The food tastes great, the casino is fun, and the whole lodge gives off a very relaxing vibe. All of the staff were very kind and courteous and made our trip up the North Shore supremely stress-free and relaxing! Would recommend!

If you are traveling north toward the Canadian border, this is a must-stop. In addition to the casino and restaurant facilities, there is a large store with convenience items and supplies for travelers and campers, and a place to fill up your fuel tank before continuing north. It has been a pleasure to see this business grow and prosper over the years. Everyone has always been very nice. The location right on the water is beautiful.

Saturday night is the prime rib boufet. .. worth checking out.

We stayed at the RV park for 2 weeks. No Wi-Fi, no trees to block wind or sound, & the laundry facility hsd 1 dryer working. The one good thing was we got to use the hotel hot tub.

This place is large. The casino doesn't reek of smoke, abd gas a soda fountain.

Incredibly well done since last time I was here 5 years ago. Very nice. Plenty 9f TV's in the bar and great chicken wings!

It's okay but the people are a bit complacent about anybody showing up. They seem not to care of your there or not.

A small casino one floor recently remodeled I have never stayed in the resort portion but have been to the casino about 6 times the staff are friendly but we had a complication with a woman who approached my husband trying to kick him off his machine claiming it was her money in the machine. Not the best ventilation when someone lights up a cigarette though.

Wonderful staff. The supervisor for the waiters and waitresses, Julie Swader, was so great! Everyone was friendly, the food and drinks were great! My friends and I had a wonderful experience. I will definitely return again and recommend it to my friends.

Omgosh! This place is immaculate! Food was good, bed was comfortable. Fabulous lake access to Lake Superior. Wish I could have stayed a week!

Horrible hotel stay. Hallways wreak of smoke, even on the no smoking side. Nonsmoking rooms smell of smoke. Dining room also stinks. Not fun at all unless you are a chain smoker. Ruined my stay. And I call Bull s#!t on the plenty to do. There is nothing around except the monument which closes at 4 and the cancer inducing casino. Not One other restaurant near by. Uuuugh!

Great location and very friendly staff. Rooms are very clean and comfortable. Amazing food at the restaurant. Over all a great place to stay.

Pros
- Abigail (check-in clerk on duty 3/7/2019) was hard @ work when we came in, and still @ work when we left next morning. Long shift;
- Room #218 was clean, and well lit. We were tired out, and bed was like heaven;
- Spectacular view of the frozen lake from our room made the lack of a microwave a bit more manageable.

Cons
- No microwave in room #218. Definitely frustrating, but Clara @ the Trading Post was most helpful;
- The pervasive cigarette smoke in the air. I smoked 2 packs/day for 25+ years. Best thing I did was quit. I realize how unpleasant that smell is. Shocking to have it in enclosed quarters

It's a small casino. Fun up North. The sit-down restaurant has a good view of the lake and the food is surprisingly good for way up here!

Pros: Clean casino with new machines. Free soda.
Cons: The casino is by far the smallest that I ve ever been in. No open table games, only slots. There aren t any old school 1 line slot machines. Spent $200 in 20 minutes and only hit 1 bonus which paid $5.

Nice hotel for overnight travelers. Casino is small and spartan. Location on lake superior is beautiful.

I would like to suggest the restaurant use takeout containers that fit in the hotel refrigerator and don't turn soggy.

We have been coming to Grand Portage Casino and Hotel for over 30 years. The staff and accommodation were excellent.The Restaurant food was good and at a fair price. Restaurant staff did a good job for being short handed. Thank You for all the safety measures you have put.

Slots seem to be okay, definitely felt cold during give away hot seats. Building seems now and quite nice.

Rooms are old and the carpet was dirty, we had to keep our flip flops on at all times. Towels were old too, and one had tears and holes. For $150 a night... total ripoff. Too bad we had to stay here since every other hotel in the area was full. Not recommended.

Thieves in the casino, liars at the front desk, terrible food and accommodations. Flying and crawling bugs everywhere. Enjoy.

Staying home would have been better. Thursday, the one only restaurant, ordered wings,they made the wrong ones,start over. Our son had the pull out couch. They ran out or sheets. 4 calls the next day, no sheets. Sunday, restaurant again. Ordered 2 half chicken dinners, they gave us 2 quarter chicken dinners instead. When we said something, she argued with us about what a half chicken is. Then she said they would make the rest of the chicken but it would be awhile since others tables just got seated. The manager didn t care. They had a mask requirement for the COVID but they didn t enforce it. Wild rice soup was vegetable soup with hints of wild rice in it. Don t waste your time with this place, all they want is your money and don t care about their customers at all.

Overall the hotel is good. The rooms are clean but the slots are tight and the food is overpriced for the quality.

Great accommodations. Friendly helpful front desk staff. Very reasonable lodging and unexpectedly reasonable restaurant prices with good fresh food. Walleye was delicious!

Clean rooms, friendly staff and a decent casino. Beautiful location!

I did not have a good time at the restaurant. One of the servers, named Jordan, didn t do satisfy us with his work. When my family and I were sat down, he immediately put water on our table and didn t ask us for any other drinks that we wanted. He spoke with a monotone voice with my family but when he spoke to the person next to my table, he spoke with lots of enthusiasm. Why were we getting monotone? We were being great customers. And when we got our food, we ordered chicken wings with different seasonings but they all tasted the same; tasted like it wasn t seasoned at all. Whenever we asked him for additional sides in our mains, he would do a face and sigh. And when my family and I had piled up all of our plates, Jordan gave us all of our food and just left the plates there. I HAD to ask him to remove it. And when it was time to leave, he gave us our bill and all he said was here s your bill. Enjoy the rest of your night. I probably won t be coming back if we get treated the same again.

Stayed here overnight before catching the ferry to Isle Royale. Convenient location, staff was helpful from check-in, the gift store and the small cafeteria counter (we arrived late so the diner was closed). We had flat bread pizza there for a late dinner which was decent. Grounds were nice and although the lodge was under renovation everything was functional and nice. Due to time limit we didn't take advantage of the $5 casino coupon each of us was given or the pool and spa unfortunately. The room was clean and Nice, no smoke odor in our smoke free room though smoking is allowed on premise. Overall a good but limited experience.

Smoke. Smoke. And more smoke. When we tried to get something to eat, we had to take it to the pool just to find a place where no one was smoking. There was a light in our room that kept blinking on and off and kept us awake. The pillows were rock solid. The internet-wifi kept cutting out causing our apps to close. I was looking forward to a little gambling but could not find a place to sit that wasn't in a cloud of smoke. When we tried to go to the gift shop, it was closed so the person who was running it could sit outside and smoke. In total, this was the second worst hotel experiences we have ever had.

Newly remodeled. Clean and modern. Food is just OK and it is a smoking facility

Ate at the snack bar. Good burger basket with fries, good price, served quickly.

Fun gaming experience. Sincere customer service from their students, locals were ok. Nights around here can get a bit weird, but what casino isn't.

Terribly understaffed, very poor service. The employees were trying very hard and doing a great job but just could not handle the number of customers. Poor management and poor training.

Grand Portage Lodge and Casino is in a lovey area and over looks Lake Superior. The restaurant staff was very friendly and helpful.

It is so beautiful up here. I work 6 days a week sometimes 16 hour days and this place is so relaxing that is why we make it our family vacation for one week a year.

This location is totally wrong Grand Portage is on hwy 61 right on the lake 6 miles so of the Canadian boarder. I know because I lived on there on the bay road. Get it right

Food was fast and amazing. Newer items on menu. Citrus ceasar salad was excellent as was the wild mushroom crostini with balsamic glaze

People were great. Food was great. Systems were down so there was confusion as to how we could pay for our lunch. Overall was fun rgardless. Did not gamble.

Always a great time! Prime Buffet was outstanding and the service was great as well! Definitely going back
