The Plaza is a unique and beautiful hotel, well worth its reputation.
Its central location in the middle of the superb Via del Corso is extremely convenient to access most of Rome's favourite sightseeing spots in a few minutes walk.
The entrance, restaurant and main hall are astonishing with their intricate decorations and nineteenth century design. It's an absolute pleasure to unwind in the hall after a long day, looking forward to enjoying a delicious breakfast in the restaurant in the morning.
The rooms are very clean, tidy and comfortable, with a specific style to each of them. The bathrooms are elegant and deliciously retro, with luxurious toiletries by fashion house Sorelle Fontana. The air conditioning works well and opaque shutters can make you lose track of time by ensuring perfect protection from the sun.
The roof terrace is a delight, by day or by night, and especially when day turns into night. The cocktails are delicious and served with ample provision of appetisers.
Not everything is "perfect", and some of the other reviews refer to the weariness or age of amenities, which in my eyes is part of the charm. They are 'inconveniences' to a stay in this hotel in the same way that old paint decaying from the walls of the churches 'requires updating': it is part of the charm. If you want everything to be brand new and spotless, you might want to look elsewhere.
But if you want to experience the magic of an archetypal Roman hotel, one that represents the spirit of the city, there probably isn't any better.
