Fantastic hotel & the staff can't do enough for you

Unfortunately I had a very bad experience here! Booked via Secret escape as 5 * for 2 days even made an update. Service was very good and very helpful, really great but room
1. Much too cold because all windows were open and that in December!
2. Two single beds were not a problem but you can expect in such a hotel that they somehow stay together, we just sat on it and the other bed slipped almost half a meter away! That brought out the next defect, the majority of clothes! And the bed was nothing either.
3. The bathroom was not exactly clean and not really worthy of a 5 * hotel!

Rightfully Grand Hotel. Warm atmosphere and you really feel welcome. Great food in the bistro.

Myself and my partner visited this restaurant for our anniversary. We loved the beautiful setting, the room was fabulous and the service was excellent. We went for 5 course menu. The prices for food and drinks were really fear in my opinion. In general the food for really good, but I found myself liking more the little nibbles in between more than the actual dishes. My scallops were exceptional, probably one of the tastiest dishes I ever ate. My partner had crab and he also really loved it. The second course was with salmon, the quality of ingredients was really good but in our opinion it was too many elements on the plate and the ingredients didn't really 'sing' together. The next two courses- lobster and veal with sweetbread were fantastic. However our dessert with burn milk it was quite run down the mill...I think we expect something more wow I guess...especially after super tasty pre desert(the cucumber and basil icecream with passion fruit and mango mousse delicious!) In general very pleasant experience but felt like there are details to work on. Anyway, thank you for a lovely dinner and great service!:-)

Great service. An easy, smooth and quick check in process. Room was large - 2 single beds pushed together rather than 1 double though. Space for two people to work. Bath, shower, coffee machine. I was very happy to stay and will be back again when I am in Utrecht, which is often.

Fantastic food, original dishes and ingredients in fine proportions. More than once I was surprised by unexpected taste explosions. With a pre dessert, dessert and post dessert, the sweet tooth in me was satisfied. The service was very pleasant, there was a nice story with all wines and the reason why she was chosen with the dishes. Even for the alcohol free people there was a Merlot grape juice and a sparkling whute without alcohol. In short, a whole experience.

Big disappointment! Had dinner with a group of 30 people (work related). Beautiful location, nothing to criticize, but portions where you need a magnifying glass, so that you can quickly make a plate of spaghetti when you return home. But at least super tasty? No, I didn't think either. Nothing special.
Beautiful wines, certainly, but a pity that they pull the glass - with or without content - from under your nose with every new course.
And if I prefer a glass of port with my cheese plate instead of the dessert wine that is served, I don't expect any comment from the waiter!

It is a lovely, clean place I ordered room service and they misheard my room number so I was left waiting a bit longer than usual but other than that it is amazing.

For the 2nd time had a Christmas dinner here with the company where I work. The location is top and tastefully decorated in a Christmas atmosphere. Again, deliciously enjoyed the dishes that were served to us. With a matching wine with every course. It was also a good idea this time to have the Christmas dinner here. I am already looking forward to this year.

Great location, but not clean. I stayed her with my partner in a deluxe double room. The room is spacious and has a large bathroom. Beds were comfortable and large. Fantastic location with the whole inner centre on walking distance. Helpful staff at arrival. Late checkout is great as well.
Cleanliness was way below expectations though. Seems like they didn't do a thorough cleaning for a long while: Dust in the bedside lockers, dust on the walls in the bathroom, huge amount of old dust in the radiators, making it smell of old dust when on. Furthermore there were stains on the curtains and it seems the bathtub didn't have a proper scrub for a while either: a layer of sticky goo was forming all around the bottom.

We spent a weekend here, with Afternoon tea in the bistro and dinner in karel 5. The service is top notch, facilities extensive, and the room was clean, very spacious and beautiful to see.
The food from both the bistro and karel 5 was delicious and refined. Dietary needs were handled creatively by the kitchen.
We enjoyed the hotel and the restaurants! Really a place to recommend and to come back to.

Ok hotel, quite expensive given the quality. Rooms are getting old. Location is superb in the city centre with a beautiful garden.

Great hotel. Restaurant Goeie Louisa is a lovely and cosy place. Ask for a table in the room where the open kitchen is (if you like watching the cooks preparing your meal). Go to the caves for a pre dinner drink. The hotel rooms are great. Bridal suite is beautiful and standard rooms too. The spa is small but very nice. We loved the pool. If you want to go out when you stay in this hotel, visit the Springhaver cinema which is really close by and has a nice bar. If you only go here for dinner or lunch, allow yourselves some extra time to stroll around the garden and the hotel section which is really authentic and a museum in itself. In my opinion best hotel in Utrecht.

Lovely, relaxing weekend in Utrecht. Breakfast was incredible and you have to leave room for the cake. Room was spacious and clean with powerful shower, fluffy robes and slippers. What more do you need....? Oh, the staff are fantastic and you're close to the centre but far enough away. We'll be back

Stayed for 5 days, but could live there for a life time. Each room is unique and has a lot of history in it.

Former German House (now Grand Hotel Karel V). The building that was the Utrecht Army Military Medical School from 1822 to 1868. About 20 Dutch military doctors from this medical school came to Japan from the end of the Edo period to the beginning of the Meiji era to teach modern medicine.

Good hotel restaurant. Rooms might get a bit dated. Incredibly good location.

Breakfast is not worth three stars. Dark rooms, beautiful park.

One of my very first times at 5 stars. Nice location. Hotel had its time... age are showing need maintenance and brush up. Don't waste money.

The rooms could be cleaner and the bed are hard as rock. The staff was friendly.

Great location and surroundings. You can easily enter the city center. The standard room is neat and clean but a bit dated.

We stayed here over the weekend for a last-minute city trip. Location couldn't be better, right in the center. There is on-site parking for just 15 /night so very reasonable. Enjoyed an hour or two in the little wellness center which is well maintained and relaxing. Had a good dinner in the bistro which I'd definitely recommend. Delicious food, lovely setting with simple wooden tables and chairs, reasonable price, too. Acoustics are a bit of a worry though. It can be challenging trying to understand the waitress.
The main reason I would hesitate to go back though is the room itself. It's old chique... in other words needs a bit of modernization. The bathroom was clean but hopelessly outdated. The room was OK but nothing special. The building has a certain grandeur which I missed in the room itself. We were first given a wrong room type (twin instead of double). They gave us another room. However the conditioner had clearly been used (half empty) and not replaced. There was a glass of milk sitting in the fridge, presumably left there by a previous guest. This is not 5star level and made me question the cleanliness of the whole room, which is not a comfortable feeling and simply not what I was expecting.

We had champagne breakfast with my in-laws, had a delicious meal and enjoyed the rich offer

Taste and exceptionally good service. Not too much and not too little at a good pace.

We had a wonderful overnight stay here. The friendly staff, the generous breakfast and the prime location make it a true 5-star experience. The room and the hall in the separate wing felt a bit less chic.

Great stay and more than great breakfast. The rooms are spacious, but an update to the interior would not look out of place. We recommend the Sprinhaver movie theater if you go through the fence. Very nice.

Paid parking if you have already paid for the training

The costumer is king. Unfortunately not with Karel V.
Plenty of places in the beautiful garden. We would like to have an extensive lunch, but that is not allowed. The many places remain empty. An hour later, others who have not reserved are allowed to take a seat.
It remains forbidden to us and that applies for the rest of the afternoon. Utrecht has 100 x more hospitable places. We then went there. Very unfortunate after previous delicious lunches.

Super friendly, you will be treated here as a person / person, nice location with cultural and historical background, nice spacious room and no noise. Very nice food. Wellness is present, ample opening time from 6 am to 11 pm a bit small but cozy

Just amazing. So classy. You can feel the history around you. And the garden is so beautiful. The staff is the real assets. So thankful for their professionalism

I would say its a 4 stars hote not a real 5 star. the hotel is authentic with classic room. The bed isn t very confortable compared to other 5 stars hotel. Breakfast is nice.

We were completely pampered. This hotel has everything you wish for and an excellent service.
We were surprised by the space of our room and the champagne at breakfast.
Do enjoy the spa if you have time!

The staff is really friendly and helpful. The building and rooms are beautiful. The bed could use a new mattress, as this one had two big people-sized craters. Still slept great though. Good breakfast selection.

The price is a bit on the high side but the hotel itself is really nice, great quality and all in one
