Stumbled across this establishment only a block fr...

Stumbled across this establishment only a block from my hotel. Desperate for something interesting to do on a Monday night besides sit at a bar, this place came through bigly. Almost passed by, as I am not a waffle guy. However, the familiar sounds of a Jerry Garcia riff caught my ear and drew me in. After paying the modest $5 cover, it was immediately clear that my destination had been reached, for the rest of the evening. That is to say, a Dead tribute band was on the stage of this smaller sized (1800 sq ft) bar. Evidently the band plays each Monday night. My smile only broadened when my eyes landed on The Macallan 12 scotch bottle behind the bar. Game on. The band is tight and clearly had it's share of devotees who come to watch them every Monday night, as a rule. This review is clearly band and bar related. There was a large curtain dividing the binary layout: food one side, bar fun...the other. I did not dine, so please seek other reviews subjective to the grub offerrings.
The next trip to Syracuse will be one that has
F & W in the itinerary.

I didn't understand the hype. The food was terrible. Coffee was not good. I never once saw someone clean a table after people left. Even the people behind the cash registers looked miserable. Would not recommend.

Very disappointing. My boyfriend and I visited today as first time customers. We were super excited. Between the online menu and the name we were sold! However, there was nothing good about our visit. When we arrived we sat at our table and looked at our menu and selected our purchases. It took at least 30 minutes for his order to come and mine had already arrived 15 minutes prior. My order arrived incorrect, no whipped cream on my waffle, I can overlook that. ( you do pay a dollar extra for that option ) I also ordered a side of scrambled eggs, 2 eggs to be exact. What I got was an omelet. Any other restaurant you go to serves you a SIDE of eggs as actual eggs. Nothing more than what you asked. I asked the young guy working the counter and he seemed confused as to what I wanted. Scrambled eggs? Yes sir, scrambled eggs in their normal form. The side was an extra 5 dollars so I wanted my order corrected. He said he would talk to the chef . A few minutes later a much smaller side of what I already didn t want was given back to me. Is it too complicated to ask for scrambled eggs? So while I was trying to breakdown the history of eggs my boyfriend s order arrived late and cold. His order was also incomplete. He ordered cheese as an extra which he didn t get, but also purchased. We decided just to leave and not finish our meals or ask for a refund. We are very disappointed because this looks like a cool place to eat. I recommend not ordering from your phone when you sit at a table and ordering from the counter. Double confirm your order with the counter person. I also recommend an explanation on your eggs. Seriously some people take eggs seriously

This place is what it says. Funk. And Waffles. And it sure seems to be the best of both! Who can say no to old school funk playing in this happy diner?! Yes, there s a wait...but you have funk! And you re about to get the most creative, silly, delicious waffle combination you could ever dream up. Yummity yum yum.

I had never been here before, so I had no idea it was going to be so crowded and beloved. The waffles are really great, it just took forever to get them. Apparently at night they have bands. We were there in the morning, so no music, which was fine since we wanted to talk.

Great food. However, anyone who even remotely looks conservative or otherwise not of an alternative bent will draw unwanted attention. Usually through staring and an occasional comment. Still worth tolerating for the chicken, waffles, and hand blended Earl Grey tea.

Overall pretty good. Very unfriendly service , didn't seem like he wanted to be there. For being on Triple D was underwhelmed. Tables were dirty. Carpet ragdy. Just Ok. Won't repeat. Chicken wasn't very tasty. Bummed.

While many restaurants in this area offer a dine in experience, Funk 'n Waffles does not allow indoor dining. Upon arrival, my party and I were instructed to find a table on the sidewalk, access the menu online, and pay online.

A 15% tip was automatically added to our total, although it was not deserved. Our food was dropped off at our table. No condiments were offered up and we were not paid any additional visit by the staff.

The food was mediocre. It may have been improved with simple condiments such as salt, pepper, and ketchup (for the rather dry home frys).

In response to the owner's comment: I am certain that tipping was not optional. It was definitely a requirement for placing the order via mobile phone while dining on the sidewalk, which was the only option available. No one in my party would have taken issue with this mandatory tip had we received the slightest bit of service.

Very rarely do I give 5 stars but when you can get an office order right, it's steaming hot and DELICIOUS..... I ordered the turkey and gravy and my oh my, I was so pleased with my food. It's very quiet here in the office because everyone is eating and enjoying! Thank you Funk and Waffles! I'll be back and shootout to the Grubhub driver too!

I saw this place on Diners Drive-ins and Dives...I was slightly disappointed. When we arrived the larger dining area was full so we sat in a booth near the front door. It was confusing. There was a line you can stand in to order but we were told to take a seat and order from the table. We place our order and we're charged a 15% tip. But the food wasn't brought to our table, they called us up to pick up the food ourselves...why were charged a tip?? No clue.
To pick up the food it's near the main dining area. Also, I had 3 plates. I asked if there were trays and was told that there were none. The woman asked if I needed help and I said yes however she just walked behind the counter and began helping out another customer. So I had to make 2 trips to bring my food to my table.
I ordered a half chicken and waffles, homefries and half chicken parm waffle. The chicken parm waffle was pretty good. The homefries lacked seasoning and were very soft. The fried chicken was good. The regular waffle wasn't hot and tasted bland.
The bathroom wasn't clean. There was paper towels all over the floor.
I don't plan on returning again. I thought the concept was cool with the different types of waffles but some changes are needed.

Funky little place in the downtown. Fairly priced, food was very enjoyable. My son had the chicken tenders sandwich with waffle fries dipped in syrup. He gave big thumbs up.I had the kale salad with walnuts, yum!!! We shared a brownie waffle sundae for dessert that was outstanding!! Overall quite good. And great music, funk of course! Thanks for a delicious lunch, a welcome retreat in the middle of a busy day.

So sad to be leaving this review, we were so excited to eat here. But our experience was less than sub-par. We walked in high hopes cute decor friendly staff. We sit and place our order, 1/2 of the order came out in less than 15 minutes. The other half had been sitting on the counter for awhile as it was soggy once we received it. That not being the worst part, we ordered the banana Nutella waffle. The bananas on the waffle were turning black/you could tell they were days if not at least a week old. We also received bacon that was so over done it was crumbling as I picked it up off the plate. And the hash browns were burnt as well. Can t say I will return.

The worst chicken and waffle on the planet if you ask me. My friend and I friend were so disappointed with the lack of flavor in chicken. The waffles were the rubbery and chewy. my first time in Syracuse, NY and this Funk and Waffles surely missed the funk in the food.

We were driving through Syracuse and stopped for breakfast. Wish we hadn't wasted our money! I got the chicken tenders (small) and waffle fries (undercooked). My partner got home fries (undercooked), eggs, bacon, and a waffle. Honestly, none of it was good... it was all mediocre, if not bad. It was lacking entirely in flavor and the seasonings they did use were not good. The only saving grace is their funky name and maybe, just maybe other menu items might be better. Wouldn't recommend.

We go for the music...but you can't just sit there! Order a waffle. A variety of sweet and savory waffles await you with some traditional as well as some very inventive combos. My fave is the Monte Christo - a waffle topped with ham, cheese and a fried egg. Dig the jazz jam every Sunday at three and of course the best in local and regional bands 7 nights a week...

We went after the Jeff Dunham show, heard great things about this place, soooooo disappointing, thought the Mackinac was gonna be great, it literally was just a small piece of chicken on a flavorless waffle, my daughter's boyfriend ordered fries with gravy, he literally got 12 fries, I rarely give bad reviews but the service absolutely sucked!

Great menu and cool design but the waffles are just not very good. I can make better waffles from my waffle maker. I really wanted to love this place but couldn t. I think they should work on improving their waffles which I m sure they can do. Woman at front counter was wonderful. I think I met the owner on way out as well and he seemed very nice

I got introduced to this place because of my boyfriend goes school at Syracuse University. From what I've been told it's a local favorite hot spot and once you come in you get why. The place has a fun vibe to it from the names of the food to art pieces on the walls. I've been here a handful of times and I've yet to be disappointed. It's a waffle place where the waffle creations can be savory and sweet. You can't beat that.

Cool place to go. Me and my friend brought 75$ worth of waffles. We try one of everything just for fun. Parking not much of a hassle. It nice to see local places in Syracuse. They did a amazing job making the waffles. The mash potatoes and gravy waffles the best.

Very popular restaurant so when my girlfriend and I first came we were excited. However, after we ordered we waited over half an hour for the food, which was delivered piecemeal - one at a time. We ordered three plates, an egg sandwhich, chicken and waffles and a montecristo. Instead of serving it together each meal came out individually. After we got our food it was cold and the waffle was not fully cooked(the inside was still doughy). In addition, we were not expecting to experience the cleanest restaurant, but i think its alot to ask of a guest to need to wipe down their own booth. Needless to say we wont be coming back.

Granted this was/is not everyones experience, by and large it seems based on their reviews it is quite the opposite. Unfortunately though this was our experience.

This was my second time eating from Funk'n Waffles. The first time was just a pick up for take out, and it was good. This time I dined in and it was not being run in the most effecient manner. I only ordered two waffles and it took over an hour for them to come out. The chicken parm waffle is amazing, and the jive turkey waffle was alright, but even with the food being good, it was not worth sitting at the table waiting for over an hour.

Only had the Funk, no Waffles.

Venue is small. They get some awesome bands there and tickets aren't too bad for the talent they get. Attended too many show to count there. If you like the funk and good medium sized choice of drinks, this is a great place in Syracuse to go. Never had an issue with parking to get there either.

Ordered the Falafel waffle. Not fresh, heated up in the microwave, not soft and fluffy like a waffle should be. Hard and could barely cut with knife. My husband ordered the Classic Brek. The eggs, bacon & potatoes were cold,
The waffle was luke warm.
My son ordered the fried chicken plate with waffle fries and they forgot the bacon... We were really excited to go to a place that had been featured on Triple D . Too bad it didn t live up to its expectations.
Very overpriced for the sub-par breakfast.
