Cookies were good but the employees aren't the nicest.
A San Francisco landmark, but rent increase will probably force them to close, so go while you can. These fortune cookies are so much better than what you get in a Chinese restaurant.
It was so cool to see the process behind the sweet little cookies (and I got a free one!) It was great.
It was super busy but the queue moved quickly and it was interesting to see them making the fortune cookies there. They give out samples and also make large personalised ones.
Fun place to visit! You need to pay $0.50 to take a pic so I dropped $1 for these. You can look at my photos but if you download I want $0.25...trying to make my money back. ;-)
We purchased some cookies and got a nice bag and they tossed in some free samples too. Nice service and fun to see.
Worth the walk if you are in the area!
I expected more after hearing great things. I thought there would be a showroom or different fortune cookies on display, but no such thing. Small place with a line, bagged cookies that were tasty but nothing amazing, a tray of misfires and a couple very unhappy workers in front churning away making cookies. I guess for all the hype I was expecting more and better.
Nothing fancy here, but this is a fun place to visit. If you don't go early, you'll stand in line. The "factory" is located in an alley, so be sure to look around while following your map app. There are workers inside "making" the cookies, though you might wonder if this is for show. They have packaged fortune cookies you can buy, on your way into the store. You can also buy fresh fortune cookies. If you want a personalized message in your cookies, you need to call ahead. Don't expect to show up and demand instant personalized cookies. Note: Pictures are of Chinatown in general. Not specifically of the fortune cookie factory.
Very cool place and about the most famous or well known spot in Chinatown. The line in out the building but moves quickly and they let to take pictures with the fortune cookie makers. They also make the fortune cookies live in the store.
It was a great experience and taste the best fortune cookie for a long time. thank you
Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory is a very small hole in the wall hidden in an alley. A small gem in Chinatown. I always enjoy stopping here when I can. I love the free samples, the varieties of Fortune Cookies are awesome as well. One of the best things is the ability to buy bottled water for $1! Pretty sure it's the cheapest water in San Francisco!
You can get a small bag of fortune cookies, a mixed bag of vanilla and chocolate, an extra-large fortune cookie, or even fortune cookies with adult fortunes inside! (I really am curious about the last option.)
It's also very intriguing to see the fortune cookies be made! It looks like they have also a new policy of charging $0.50/picture.
I highly recommend stopping here when you're in Chinatown. Definitely a must at least once!
Small room with a few workers. They expect you to pay a donation.
If you want to know how and where these famous fortune cookies are made, you have to go through here, keep in mind that it's not the big deal, a lady turning around haha, but it's good to go and see it, there are many varieties, They are so expensive and they also invite you. Nice visit
Really cool to see how they are made, but they have a slightly weird taste
This place makes the most delicious fortune cookies. My son had 1500 fortune cookies made this last weekend, with a custom message, individually wrapped. Everyone loved it. A creative party favor for any occasion, with your own message.
Overpriced and overrated.. Felt very discriminated.. Only friendly towards Caucasian customers and not to Asian customers especially the male staff. You don't even need to interact with him, you can feel his negatively if you are Asian. I bought 3 packs and wanted to buy more but was turn off by his reluctance to serve. Will not recommend and would definitely not go back there again.. If u are Caucasian, they'll welcome u with open arms..
It's unsurprisingly small inside and when we went there was a line out the door. Time inside is short but sufficient to see how the process works and buy a bag of fortune cookies. If you're expecting a factory tour, temper your expectations. If you're expecting a store with a peak behind the scenes, you're in for a treat.
I would recommend to a friend.
You wait in line to get in, very touristic, you get free sample. Tastes good
Fresh fortune cookies! So fresh in fact, you can write your own fortune and have it baked into the cookie. Don't be put off by the long line...it moves quickly. Enjoy one of the free samples of the cookies still warm from the oven. Worth stopping by!
Not going to lie, I really don't like fortune cookies. They're dry and mealy and don't really taste like anything. The only part I like is ripping out the fortune.
But since my friend and I were visiting SF, we decided to give the factory a visit. I always like seeing how things are made, so I was pretty excited for the tour. Well, the tour isn't actually a tour. And the factory isn't really a factory. At least it wasn't the grandiose cookie factory that I had pictured in my head. Instead, it's a small room down some alley way, and you have two ladies working on the cookies. Nonetheless, it was still pretty amazing to see them at work.
They have a sign saying that if you want to take a photo/video, it'll cost you 50 cents. They don't really enforce it but you should definitely just be a good person and pay it. After all, their "tour" is free and they have to make a living somehow! 50 cents for a glimpse of their process is 50 cents well spent.
The factory is very simple, it is nice to see how they are made, plus you can customize 2 for the cost of 1.50 usd which is a nice detail
Worth a trip to China Town. You can make your own fortunes. Very cheap. The smell coming from the alley should draw you in alone. Cookies bigger than your hand
My mom and aunt and I had the best time. The walk was a little hard for my mom who is 77 but she managed to make it from The Dragon Gate to Ross Alley with a couple of stops to rest on the way. The shop is halfway down the block with the entrance a few steps into the alley. The man was very friendly and had a samples ready. Of course I had to buy the chocolate fortune cookies and a little bag for 75cents. They also have nice tote bags for $15 and t-shirts too!!! They have chocolate covered cookie with sprinkles too. My mom said she saw a sign that said for $1 you can put in your own fortune. Next time I will do that! The place is small so don't expect what we think of a factory is. Two nice ladies making cookies.
We come to this place everytime we are in San Francisco! Always super nice and friendly! Even gave us a take home reusable bag full of sample cookies!! So sweet!
Family friendly fun. It's good for kids to see old a simple old school factory that is still funtional.
This tiny factory has been around since the 1960's. I remember visiting this place when I was a kid. Not much has changed. A visit should only take a minute or two, though the tourists tend to linger longer. Get in line (if any), get a free cookie sample, pay $0.50 if you want a picture of the cookie machine /workers, then buy your bags of fortune cookies.
The cookies are delicious! Eat them within a few days of opening the bag for best taste. Fortune cookies will go stale after a while.
Pretty neat and small business. I felt pressured in keeping moving even though we wanted to watch the neat cookie making process for longer. You almost miss it on the street.
Overall, it's worth a visit to see how fortune cookies are still made by hand. Quite a few are made by machines now, but you can still see what it's like to make them by hand. They also give out free samples! They sell a variety of flavors.
Very funny but very full. The Fortune cookies actually have some flavor thanks to freshness ..
This place was really cool to visit! fresh fortune cookies and a great price. Part of historic Chinatown. Come visit!
This seemed like a great concept and it was cool to see the fortune cookies made; however, there is little to no room inside to browse and make a purchase. When I was able to buy my fortune cookies, I was given fortune cookie wafers (same thing as their samples) which was nice. Sadly, that was the only thing that tasted good. The bag of fortune cookies tasted burnt and were pretty much inedible. I got the adult fortunes bag and the fortunes don t make sense and are surely not what I would consider adult.
If you like fortune cookies or just good desserts, this is definitely the place to stop. I recommend the multi-flavor pack of flat fortune cookie rounds that feature three flavors: strawberry, chocolate, and the traditional vanilla. The best part though is that you can watch the workers making the cookies as you decide on what to buy. We bought two bags of cookies and upon purchase, they gave us a collectable bag and threw in some fresh off the line cookies that were still warm when we ate them. So delicious!!!
Very good place to come to visit, you can make your personalized fortune cookies with your message, it is worth about 2 dollars to personalize your cookies. Recommended.
A place to get fortune cookies. You can customize your own fortune cookies. They charge $0.50 if you take a photo inside. Most people line up to buy a customized fortune cookie. I only go there when there's no line out the door.
Tucked away in a Chinatown alley, this factory makes some of the most delicious fortune cookies you'll ever have. It's fun to watch the cookies being made, but I keep coming back because the cookies are so good. I'll buy a big bag, or a half a dozen chocolate-dipped ones to send to my sister in Virginia. They're always a big hit.
Neat. A must see. Make your own fortune cookie customized for your friends.
Cookies are very fresh and tasty! Amazing that they are hand made!
A must see as a tourist, or a local. Never knew how those neat little cookie packages were created! Check us out on instagram for more of the story!
The authentic place where the fortune cookies are made. They let you taste the cookie before it gets the shape. They have diferent flavours.
Definitely a San Francisco must see! In a high chinese culture community are gems like this amazing store/factory! Lots of good fortune cookies to choose from and spectacular taste! The owner was so nice and showed us the factory and took my family's photo in the factory! He also spoiled my family with samples of the fortune cookies! The prices for the fortune cookies and other products are affordable and worth it! Next time I'm out in san francisco ca again I am definitely stopping by to pick up more fortune cookies
Great tourist place to get fresh fortune cookie crackers - at a price.
hole in the wall place where you can see a fortune cookie made by hand. can buy cookies by the bag. cash only
So small and hard to find lol! The warm cookies are amazing!
Lovely little shop down a side street, great value for money and also great for gifting
Such fun experience! It's sweet (in every way!) and unique. The cookie machine looks straight out of Dr. Seuss. They give yummy samples and the cookies come in regular, chocolate, and strawberry. You can even write a fortune and they will bake it into a cookie for you! A tip is that you need cash to buy cookies. They don't take cards.
This is where you can get fresh fortune cookies and dollar cookies. Watch out, grandpa does not allow you to take picture or recording the process. Maybe he is okay if you taking his picture instead.
For location, this is a bit tricky, its in chinatown, in a small alley. I wondered if he knows Bruce Lee's childhood and family house around there.
This place is a must see staple of San Francisco. It became my favorite spot to tell new visitors about, and has the nicest staff. It's an unbelievably small building, but it has rave reviews from newspapers posted on the door and walls. This place has a ton of history, and the people there honestly pour everything into the work. It's so cool to see how they make the fortune cookies, put the fortunes in, and the different types they can make. For a very cheap price you can buy The cookies, and you can try some as a sample when you come in and visit. Just remember, they recommend a $.50 donation if you're going to take pictures, and you will probably want to take pictures, so come prepared for that.
Small space full of fresh cooked/baked fortune cookies. You can watch staffs making cookies. Flat coins are really awsome!
Always a favorite stop in SF and don't forget while you picking up cookies to ask for a view of how they are made
Luckily we didnt go on a super busy weekend day and waited till a weekday. Takes literally 2 minutes if you stop to watch the machine. Inside is 50-80sqft. Stingy with samples (gave us 1 broken piece and put it away)and i found the prices to be high personally. Typing this review took longer than the tour.
Many don't know but this is the first Chinese Cookie bakery and shop in the world. Yup, Chinese cookies don't come from China. There's an interesting history behind it...go there to know more
Stand in line to be shuffled through a small area for fortune cookies
Great tourist attraction! There's cheap souvenirs and the line moves quickly!
The fortunate cookies are good. The workers are friendly and nice. They give you free sample too.
Go here and see handmade cookies. Have a special message of your own
Great experience! Sweet treats and a little fortune
As seen on the amazing race... hole in the wall but great fortune cookies.
Wonderful experience, experiencing a bit of history.
Short, sweet visit. Fascinating to watch. Historic.
It's good to see how they are made and how it all started. Buying some to share with colleagues or family can be a simple cheap present.
Now that i've had the flat fortune cookies, I prefer them. Once we bought a bag, he gave us an additional handful of warm flat cookies and they were good!
This is a must see place if you re already in San Francisco s Chinatown! This was the highlight of Chinatown for us! You can smell the fortune cookie aromas from the street. They offer free hot fortune cookie tasting and you can also write your own fortune and make a cookie to put it in. There are all different colors of fortune cookies to buy. It s definitely more expensive to buy a bag of their freshly made fortune cookies vs in-store fortune cookies of course! It was interesting to watch the ladies in the fortune cookie making process. Many famous people have been there. I believe the Amazing Race did a challenge there, or at least one like it!
This is a tiny little shop making fortune cookies, you can easily pop by and watch for a few minutes as you head through Chinatown. They charge for pics but otherwise it's a cool free attraction.
Awesome, fresh, all natural, delectable, and the photos on the wall you see who was there before
A must see when in Chinatown, Hidden away in an alley. Fun to watch the cookies being made. You can also wrote notes and they'll put it in a cookie for you, great for Friends or Customers.
The tour was not really a tour, and they made you pay to take pictures. We liked that you could make your own fortunes though.
Love this place. Hasn't changed since I was kid. The flat cookies are a bargain. Just don't eat them all at once.
Totally stumbled on this by accident. It's a hidden secret! Loved the experience!
