The airport is very clearly structured and looks very well maintained. What bothers is the fact that in Terminal 1 almost the entire restaurant area is blocked by a fast-food provider. During peak hours, waiting times of more than 20 minutes will arise at the fast food provider's outlet!

The worst experience I've ever had in a airport. Since our flight went early in the morning and the public transportation between the city center and the airport was poor we decided to stay in the airport. We couldn't do the check in before 4am so we had to wait. The airport itself closed very early and all the people were directed into a small area where were some bences and a cafe with quite cozy seating area which sadly was closed around 1am aswell. It was very cold over there and since all the benches were occupied then we decided to try to sleep on the ground which was freezing cold. While we tried to sleep (with many others) suddenly we started hearing some weird construction noices from upstairs which lasted for a long time and when that stopped the crazy cleaners started racing in the hallways waking all the people sleeping on the ground as well as others from the benches. So we couldn't sleep and decided to check social media instead, but suprise suprise, the WIFI was turned off aswell. In addition, all the staff was very impolite when we tried to ask information. I understand that they were working night shift, but it doesn't excuse their rude attitude towards us. To sum it up, I don't think the cheap flight tickets were worth this very inconvinient experience and I would recommend people to travel from Hamburg airport during day time when all the facilities are open.
Super annoying! All the self check-in installed for millions and then the new self bag drop weighs the bag at 24 kg but state failure that it can't do 32 kg or more. WTF! Have to cue up at the only in person check-in with 100 other people.
Suitcase delivery and check everything in good, but every time in the suitcase issue very long waits. Feels the slowest airport in Europe in this area.
We had to wait several times for a flight up to 1 hour on our luggage.
Last time I reported the luggage as missing for 220 passengers, whereupon the Lady at the Lost & Found desk answered: "That's the way it is, we do not have any staff"
That's the last thing. I will avoid Hamburg anyway!
Nice airport in exactly the right size with friendly staff. Well connected both nationally and internationally. By train, car or bus you can easily continue.
You always come quickly through the check-in and through the controls. And both before and behind the controls, the prices in the restaurants are relatively cheap, and with a great variety.
The airport team exudes an extraordinary love of flying, as the offers for Plane Spotter and children's birthdays, the social media contributions and the free airport panoramas show.
In addition, the staff are overwhelmingly friendly and helpful.
We are glad to have such an airport in the region. Feel good every time.
Security check took far too long for a Sunday afternoon, routes far too long, poorly signposted, automatic bag drop-off did not work, all cafes and restaurants in the vicinity of the gate were closed and distance rules were hardly implemented.
The security control has cost me and many other passengers so much time that we have missed our flight, a joke. And no, we were not too late, we went in time for the security check. The security staff are mostly unfriendly and keep the whole process unnecessarily long, due to sluggish work. The alleged live ticker seems to be only an artificial offer that is not at all true with reality. how else can the internet wait 3 minutes and the actual waiting time is almost one hour. This airport will be avoided in the future, otherwise it works well, something I've never experienced.
I use this airport a couple of times a year, it has most things you require and has easy access to Hamburg city centre. If you smoke there are several smoking cabins after passport control.
The handling and the seemingly endless waiting times at the security checkpoints are a complete disaster, the toilets are overflowing with dirt and the behavior of the staff, with a few notable exceptions, is simply a cheek. We fly different routes every couple of weeks. Hamburg Airport falls completely out of the ordinary: Badly organized, the purest chaos and quite confusing - but by far the worst are the more than unfriendly and snotty employees at the security check. With an outrageous tone of command, they excel through petty power games and macho self-importance - even if you obey orders immediately and without discussion, you will be hit in the most improper way and threatened that you don't have to fly if you don't follow the instructions. We haven't seen anything like it before. It has absolutely nothing to do with service or manners - ultimately towards a customer. Rough digging is done in the bum bag and rucksack, as on the grave table. Sure, controls are important - but there is another way to do it, as has been sufficiently demonstrated to us at a number of other international airports. The tone of the ground staff when boarding would also be more appropriate for a barracks yard. As someone has already written: For a city as big as Hamburg, which prides itself as the gateway to the world, this airport is a shame!
Modern, clean and clear airport. Sometimes you have to wait a long time on the luggage straps, had been lucky all the last times and only waited 10-15 minutes for my luggage.
+ Rental car return easily accessible, uncomplicated and close to the terminal.
- Sometimes very long waiting times at the security checkpoint. Often a few lanes open, too few and too unfriendly staff.
- Maybe coincidence, but my flight in Hamburg is regularly delayed.
- With the car you should allow a lot of time for traffic jams at rush hour.
- Only experienced in Hamburg: after about half of the luggage had been loaded, the apron worker shift was over and everyone drove away. Since the next shift wasn't there yet, we stood around with the plane for 45 minutes until someone packed the last suitcases onto the plane ...
Nice, tidy, clearly structured airport. But I wouldn't stop at the Gosch fish restaurant again. I am attracted to fresh spices up front, but that's not on the food. Even fish rolls without salad and sauce. Gosch, not as you know it, unfortunately.
It is bitter that baggage handling rarely works at such a beautiful airport. As a rule, you wait for your luggage forever. This is embarrassing and you can see how much personnel is saved here, at the expense of passengers who want to continue or go home.
Clear, well organized and the staff is very friendly & helpful. Check in went quickly, departure was on time The offer of shops is as at every airport ....... much choice of souvenirs, clothing, suitcases & bags, cafes, snack bars etc The prices are rather high up, but this is normal at the airport
One of the worst airports I have been to in terms of treatment of travellers. Water wasn't allowed in hand luggage, which is common. But then I was made to drink half a litre water, just because they didn't have a provision to pour the water out. The only two options provided were to either drink the water completely or go to a restroom, pour and follow queue again. Having a big queue and waiting time in mind, I was forced to drink the water just before a flight. They probably just don't give a damn about a passenger drinking a bottle full of water before a take off.
As the previous speakers said, the waiting time for the luggage is far too long, I waited 1 hour for my luggage, they packed everything from 3 different flights onto the belt. You can't be serious!
Extremely unfriendly security check staff - my mother had an injury and was forced to stretch her arms in the scanner which she was not able to do because of the injury. She was then commanded by security check staff to follow orders, in a hostile manner. Unbelievable. I have been to many airports but have never encountered such unfriendly security check staff. Later, the gate announcement was changed 3 times at the time the boarding should take place, forcing the ready crowd/queue to move every time to another gate. Quite unusual and not fun at all.
a VERY NICE WELL APPOINTED AIRPORT. NICE TO HAVE A VIEW OF THE 'FIELD' AND GOOD CHOICE OF FOOD AND DRINK. SECURITY EXCELLENT. . would have got five stars but for appalling Border check on arrival. 400 pax , two border police which was very annoying and blot on a fine operation
I originally rated this airport with 4 stars. But due to the current change in service, I have to change my mind. Since the end of 2016, I have had many bad experiences with this airport, regardless of the airline. Basically you always wait, and often for a very long time. Both at departure: check-in (preferably 90min. E.g. 1 counter for a fully booked B737 - "holiday bomber" to Spain with a lot of luggage), security check, boarding as well as on arrival: on the plane until sometime there are passenger steps, you stand often 15-30 minutes in the rain on the apron until a bus arrives, baggage claim
Even in direct national and international comparison with other airports, I unfortunately have to say that Hamburg Airport is at the bottom of the comparison for almost all service / quality issues.
An airport with high standards but very poor luggage service. We had to wait 45 minutes for our luggage in the luggage hall, the staff only said that it was not unusual in Hamburg. Lower service level, amazing that management doesn't do anything. When the luggage finally came, the frustrated passengers clapped. I've only ever seen that in Africa as a frequent flyer.
Once again serviced by 1std on the baggage belt. The best thing was that on a Turkish airline flight that came later, the luggage was 20min !!!!! was there earlier than on my KLM flight. Every time the same sh .....
Clean, easy to access and nothing to report at the level of orientations. Except that the parking is very stressful. They have a coffee at the record level that gives a very nice view of the runways and takeoffs. This More
A shameful figure that Hamburg Airport makes. The name "Helmut Schmidt" should actually be withdrawn, because this company is not worthy of the name. At check-in (09/16/2017) two hours waiting at the security check and then a massive delay because passengers (understandably) were not on the plane in time and there was no WAB sheet.
On arrival (29.09.2017) there is a waiting period of over 30 minutes for the apron bus and a total of 2 hours (!) To hand out the luggage. The fact that one is mocked on Friday evening by an announcement "The dispatch is delayed due to high traffic" knocks the barrel off the ground.
The work on the apron is not an explanation and certainly not an excuse, but an outrageous excuse. After all, this work did not come as a surprise to the airport.
Care of limited mobility traveler did not work (both on round trip!). Baggage claim took a long time. At the neighboring band, travelers waited more than 2 1/2 hours for their luggage from Mallorca.
a few years ago airport hamburg was a little gem for you, small but nice. unfortunately this is no longer the case. if you land in the evening and with lufthansa, the plane always gets an outside position, so nice to take the bus and then they don't even manage to put the luggage on the bands in a reasonably timely manner! Departure check-in, everything is fine, but it is more down to the airline, not all locks are open during screening, despite high crowds, long waiting times. yoh hamburg is now at the level of a ramsch airport, unfortunately!
Baggage claim always lasts forever on Thursday evening. I've already spent hours there. They probably just save on the staff. This is not how flying is fun.
Even a star is too much. I would not like to forgive anyone. Such an unfriendly and shameful staff. We landed with my girlfriend at the airport with a lot of stress and needed help with our luggage and no one there helped although they were responsible! We almost missed our flight because of that! On top of that, they were also malicious! Never again Hamburg Airport! Grottenschlecht!
The waiting times for luggage are absolutely out of the question. We landed at 10:45 p.m. with a 30-minute delay and then waited about 1.5 hours for the luggage to run over the belt. Since it was not the first time, you have to clearly say that the Company that is responsible for this is not doing its job or has too few staff ...
Has everything you need, but for everything "withdrawn" prices, from parking garage to pretzel. Find him very time-consuming, from baggage check-in to the seccheck and from there back to the gate, terrible.
Inability to square Long waiting times for buses for passengers; Doors do not open automatically; extremely long and unacceptable waiting times at the baggage carousel; Toilets in a miserable condition, as I've never seen them at an airport worldwide
Careful you will be towed on park area immediately!
If you want to pick up arriving passengers you have to nat. Go to the departure parking lot, which is pretty illogical! On the parkscheinflaechen one towed directly, despite park disc if one forgets to solve a parking ticket.
Hamburg Airport "workforce" need to understand German is not the only language in the world....In international airports people usually can speak English + another language if needed.
My wife was going to New York this morning. Tickets and Esta available. Unfortunately she had overlooked that the Esta had expired. Big excitement, of course. Unfortunately my wife failed on the new Esta in the tax oath. was requested. In retrospect, we know that either 000 ..... has to be entered there or simply the passport number. Unfortunately, nobody at the airport is able to help a woman. Not even the alleged "supervisor". Had that worked, a short-term Esta would have been possible. Now that has cost us a new ticket. It's a shame that nobody knows anything at such an airport. Service desert Germany
Had very bad experiences for the second time. Airport staff is very poorly trained and annoyed with excess traffic. At the beginning of June we wanted to check in bulky luggage, after about 45 queues we were sent to the counter opposite to pay and should come back straight away. No sooner said than done, the lady at the counter said we could please go to the neighboring counter - she wouldn't know her way around. Arrival last September, 1 1/2 waiting for suitcases due to lack of staff. As a native of Hamburg, I can only say, embarrassing, embarrassing
Fly almost on time and then you wait in an outside position for 30 minutes for a bus and another 25 minutes for your luggage. Good thing there is Hanover! Or simply pay the employees more wages, then you will find employees who are also motivated.
A disaster at Eurowings. Have never experienced anything like this in Hamburg. The queue for EW went from Terminal 1, Counter 2 to Terminal 1. No specifications or structures to be seen. The passengers pushed their way and it was a huge mess as only 1 check-in was open. There were no (newspaper) shops behind the security check. And that at 6 o'clock. Corona or not. That's really bad.
WORST airport for a connection flight! Myself and several other passengers almost missed our flight due to the slow airport security and long lines. This ruined my whole flight experience with Eurowings.
