Very interesting archaeological site among the most important in the history of humanity. The passage under the Lion's Gate is particularly exciting.
There are million ways to use the time than visit this place. One of the most visited ancient point in Greece kept in a bad condition and not very attractive for tourists.
Very impressive to be in a place built 1400 years BC, by Cyclopes (?)
The only thrill in visiting such an ancient and famous polis
You read two to three things about Mycenae and when you visit them or when you are there "gogglareis" and you walk into this incredible place. Don't forget to go to the Museum and the 4 Tombs !!!
The capital of ancient Greece! Most people, when they think of ancient Greece, think of the classical period, back in Athens in the 5th and 4th centuries BC. But long before that, there was the Mycenaean phase, when Mycenae was the most powerful state city in Greece and exercised its power in a vast region, ranging from Spain to Asia Minor, although never in a unified way.
In Homer's Iliad, Mycenae is ruled by the mighty Agamemnon, the greatest leader of the Greeks, brother of Menelaus, who had his wife Helena stolen by Paris.
At the archaeological site, we can visit the ruins of the city, with the imposing cyclopean wall, the famous Lions Gate and an impressive funerary tomb, as well as a small but charming museum. For those who like history (after all they are just ruins) it is sensational! I highly recommend it!
PS: The visit to Mycenae needs to be complemented by the Archaeological Museum of Athens, where most of the impressive pieces of gold, bronze and ceramics that were found in the city are, such as swords, jars and fantastic death masks, including the famous "Agamemnon mask ".
An archaeological site that you should definitely visit!
I love it, one of the oldest remains they have. Its environment, location is fantastic.
Remembering what you studied long ago and being able to be is magnificent
This is a place whose special aura you feel immediately and from afar.
Apparently the ancients now had a sense lost to us.
Many of you miss the museum but is the first one must visit to understand the site.
It's the center of the beginning of civilised European culture, for right or for wrong if you went to school in the west and you paid attention, it all begins in this place.
A fantastic place, surrounded by greenery and far from modern "civilization". It's great to visit a place you studied in school.
Splendid lanscape, super archeological site.A must if you are around Peloponnese a
Very vast and interesting archaeological site, unfortunately also quite ruined.
The museum is very well maintained.
It would not hurt if together with the ticket a map of the place and some more information were provided, there is no audio guide and the information on the trolleys is scarce and only in Greek or English.
It could be valued much more.
Absolutely amazing site, with an onsite (air-conditioned!) museum. The free English audiotour for the museum gives a wonderful history of the site and the museum artifacts. Well worth a few hours, even on a hot day!
Magnificent monument known worldwide to see absolutely
Worth your time 100%. Many things to see and learn about.
A wonderful place.. Very big but in ruin, you can only imagine the greatness of such place in the past, reminding me the times of ulisse and the war of troy. Maybe a bit of reconstruction of graphic panels would help to appreciate it better.
Absolutely incredible prehistoric site. The walls, the views, walking through the Lion's gate, and the tombs. Make sure you come here on a trip to the area. I came here on a day trip and I loved it.
Beautiful landscape
But a little poorly maintained I would say ..
Essential to understand the history of Greece and Europe.
Interesting experience. The place is comfortable even for people with special needs. Visitors should be told that they must book the ticket because it is also valid to enter the tomb of Agamemnon (and vice versa).
Well kept. There is the Lion Gate, the palace and the royal tomb. You see a beautiful landscape where you can admire the "profile of Zeus."
The place we liked a lot with its famous door of the Lions.
It is a site in a mountain, where it shows how powerful the city was.
It has magnificent views.
On one side is the museum where many things of the city are preserved and they explain the history.
The entrance costs 12 Euros and gives you access to the site, the museum and the treasury of Atreo which is located on the same road about 100 meters before.
It has a large free parking with some autobares if you want to drink something.
It can take you about 2 hours to see everything in peace.
I recommend you visit it.
In the area there are other deposits to see.
Interesting site if you like old stones and related history. However, there are few things left and we guess more than we can see. Prefer Epidaurus if you have to choose.
The scale is incredible. Also the beehive tomb at the next site down the hill is breathtaking
Superb location and interesting and beautiful things. Many legends.
Amazing. Fault surface seen by Lion Gate. See how building bricks of conglomerate shaped to fit the sloping fault surface.
The local name is a historical site called Mycenae. If you know the historical meaning and visit it, it will be a field of mountain education. Just visiting can be disappointing.
As long as you don't miss the museum, it's amazing what you learn there
Mycenae, a city founded by, according to mythology, the son of Zeus and Danae, Perseus at least 3,500 years ago. Known from excavations and the Lviv Gate, it was here that the famous Mangamemnon mask and many gold products were found, here is the treasury of Arteusz, the mountain under which Sisyphus had the great boulder. The wonderful history of the mythical city and the views from the hill on which it is located make an amazing impression
Fascinating place well worth a visit. Lots of loud tourists can spoil the ambience. Don't miss the tombs!
Great antique architecture, useful to visit at the beginning or end of the visiting hours, otherwise hot
What to say about our ancient ... They are really nice and well preserved ... When you see them, the memories from the school and all that they see in the history books are awakening. The price for the Greeks is quite expensive. It is good to have some better honor to us so that we can enjoy our History.
Very nice site including museum which I would suggest seeing first
A magnificent place to visit. The heart of the Mycenaean civilization.
Beautiful finally you can see from the truth what has been read on the books
We almost had the hill for ourselves ... what an atmosphere!
A very interesting site with for centerpiece the door of the Lionesses, still standing, and which allows to discover the Mycenaean civilization, much older than the rest of the Greek archaeological sites. Beyond the door of the Lionesses, many ruins which allow to easily represent the city.
Awesome history, really activated your imagination.
Spectacular archaeological site, well maintained and well organized. The site climbs up a small hill, explanatory panels with explanations are inserted between the streets that stretch along the ruins. Breathtaking views and panoramas. It is definitely worth the 12 euro entrance, which also includes the museum, full of finds in its 4 rooms. The free audio guide is a great way to complete the visit as it provides very detailed information.
Very nice archeological site. Good views of the surroundings. Certainly worth visiting.
What a beauty. A great place to visit but wear good shoes. Be impressed by the Lions Gate 12 Euro entrance
A wonderful place in a prime location. Surrounded by mountains, this place shines, which is better to visit with good shoes and not in the midday heat. It is worth knowing the historical background in order to understand and appreciate this magnificent site in its entirety.
Awesome. It should be clear that the Tomb of Atreus is elsewhere. Propet.
Legendary fortress of Agamemnon. He led the Greeks into the fight for Troy. His brother, King Menelaus of Sparta and Odyseus, King of Ithaca, accompanied him on his campaign. Likewise the heroes Nestor, Ajax and Achill. Fascinated by the story, written down by Homer in his Iliad, Schliemann began his excavations here. He found the famous "gold mask of Agamemnon" in the tomb round A, which, however, does not come from this legendary king. If you then walk through the ruins of the "Lion Gate", the story, legends and legends become comprehensible. You will be rewarded after a steep climb to the castle with a great view. Best to be there early at the opening time, then the rush is not so big. If the entry seems too expensive, you should stay at home. Very nicely worked up the museum, which one should not miss.
Quiet an ancient historically important place....Argememnons burial mound is very impressive.
Nice museum, not overcrowded just don't visit it during the hot hours in the summer morning and evening recommend
