What a wonderful and unique way to give visitors an authentic view of past times. This museum is by far my favorite I have ever visited.

Centrally located, easily accessible by foot from the city center with. Entry was 21 EUR per person, kids up to 18 are free which i thought to be very generous.

The museum starts in the early 15th century with very bumpy cobblestone. If you have an infant or toddler in a stroller, it will really test the suspension or you take a carrier and leave the stroller in the hotel/ at home.
You can enter some of the houses and get a real insight on how life was back in the days. Some of the houses have mannequins in the rooms which creeped me out a little and if you are tall you will need to take care of your head, those ceilings are low.

I love how they make a slow transition in architecture from 15th to 1970s. When you come in the later afternoon, you see it even more because parts of the museum have light others don't - just like it was in the past.
They sell originally brewerd beer, herbs and flowers and old school pastries as well.

We left and knew we will definitely come back when in Denmark. This place is extremely unique and a cultural treasure that should be keept for generations to follow. The best way to learn about history is to experience is.

Nice

Outdoor museum, great!!!

Outdoor museum, great!!!
Like you walk into real houses, especially the '60s and '70s houses were you really expect to be able to talk to the inhabitants.

You can spent a whole day here.

Go here for a feeling of the day from another time. Not that many facts around in the "museum" but a lot of actors that do tasks from the period with the tools from it. You can ask them questions or just enteract with them to "learn"/experience more.

I was taken to Den Ganle By by collaegues and thought this is the old part of town, not that it is a reconstruction and museum. It was nice to walk though some time and experience the past.

Amazing museum! I recommend that you reserve minimum 2 hours to visit. Take special attention for the bakery (original and delicious sweets) and the Queen Margareth dresses. The building with the lift to the past is fantastic!

Very interesting! The 70 s section was in particular really cool and well made. Very creatively done with screens, interactive showcases. We spent 5 hours in The old town. Really recommend. Loved the shops that was staffed. The 70 s hairdresser. The little details with working phones in the apartments. A turntable playing the records when you put the album on top of the turntable. Who ever is developing the exhibits are doing a fantastic job. Great time

A visit to Den Gamle By takes you back to Denmark as it was between the 1550 to 19th century. The open air #museum is split into two sections the older part made up of more wooden structures and the second part made up of brick structures. It is made up of about 75 buildings. With rooms and workshops you can explore

I loved walking through the town and looking into the shops. The Cafe also has good cakes, other pastries and coffee.

Totally worth the visit

A great place to visit on a sunny day. This open air museum has plenty of buildings and shops to visit, and gives you a nice insight into traditional Danish life. The museum has old buildings from earlier periods and more modern ones, including a TV shop from the 80's complete with working retro televisions (and the prices they would have cost you). You can easily spend a few hours here, and the entrance fee is well worth the cost.

Good to explore the old ways of living and architecture. Also good for children. The Christmas displays, games and food demonstrations are quite interesting.

It was too crowded with rude and pushy adults to give this 5 stars. Also has become incredibly commercial and takes away from the charm.

Was under renovation when we visited but a lovely living museum with the added bonus of multiple time periods to explore. The staging is really nice, the food and the interactive bits are good. Parking is not hard to find close by. Great start to a day in Aarhaus

Educational place. In many places there are employees who are dressed up as citizens of the day. They have many exciting stories to tell. Especially the city built in the year 1974 is super exciting and fun.
It should be noted that the streets are paved with cobblestones, so high heels and strollers have some challenges. Definitely worth a visit.

Expected "an old town" - but it is beyond expectations. Place definietly recommended!!! Great information gathered in one place, well done reconstruction and the final touch of very nice stuff makes it a must-do in Denmark. But take your time - it really deserves at least 4 hours of your time.

If you want to learn about Denmark, this is the place to go. Great for kids and adults alike, since the experience is so immersive.

Walking around in cities like they used to look like is something I have not experienced like this before. Everything is so thorough and there has been paid A LOT of attention to all details. Many artifacts I have never seen before, but they are here, some original some not.

They also have actors walking around and pretending to be in the period you are in, which gives it the final convincing touch.

Go during the summer or Christmas.

Very clear recommendation in Aarhus. If you are there you have to go here. It is absolutely fascinating to travel through time. I found the different apartment from the 1970s particularly interesting. But there are also houses as long ago as times. A new area is currently being built with more original houses from the 2000s.

Lovely day with children and grandchildren
Fun with a street from my own time, fun to see all the things from that time. It's especially fun when there's enlivening.

Super place. Large. With real actors. You can even buy something using cards. You can smell gasoline in car shop. You can visit old school kindegarden. Go to old style shop. See old electronic things. You can find something moder too. Or take horse ride.

Great insights into the world from back then.

Great insights into the world from back then.
The extras were costumed to match the different ages.
The various houses and their furnishings are also described in German.
The shops also sell things that correspond to that time.
The bakers are delicious too!

Loving this place. Went in twice and still can't get enough of the charm of this open air museum. I love the fact that I can go in and out of the old building and see how people lives were like in the past. Weekend was the best when the old bakery was selling some good old Danish cookies and pastries and certain shops are open for businesses.

Wonderful olden place that gives you a feeling of being in a fairy tale land. Must visit this place to feel a world lost in time. Den gamle is a beautiful place of old world charm with some modern cafes and restaurant. A must visit when you are here because it is a world of it own. Remember to visit the stores inside and see how the buildings were like a century ago. And not forgetting to take some souvenir shots of the place for a memorable capture of this charming wonderful place.

A really interesting outdoor museum with a variety of buildings from a few periods of history. During the day you can explore the buildings which are all decorated and furnished authentically from the appropriate time period. Amazingly you can enter the museum for free in the evening and although the buildings themselves are closed, you can see the outside of them all with far fewer people around so great for photography!

Good opportunities to gain insight into the past, where working workshops and extras are instrumental in providing a good overall experience.
The new district from the 70s helps to lift the whole city to a new exciting level.
Stalls, sausage cart, shops, etc. provides a great opportunity to bring home memories.
However, hijacking with a horse-drawn carriage was very expensive (DKK 360, two adults, two children for 20 min)

Magic!!
