An amazing time pocket. Worth a visit. The staff and staff in general give 10% extra to the experience with their presence and empathy. The new (old) district gives a much needed new dimension to the Old Town (DGB), which in some places appears a bit old and worn. DGB is especially good for the children, who both get history teaching and insight into parents and grandparents' everyday lives.
Souvenirs and food / drinks are really good with a high level and reasonable prices.

Cool history, worth a couple hours looking around. Many period houses with descriptions in both Danish and English which was very helpful. A stop in at the bakery for some freshly baked cookies is a must.

Beautiful old half-timbered houses in narrow streets with cobbled streets. When people come with prams, walkers and wheelchairs, it is very difficult to get around. High risk of falling and not barrier-free. If you are not affected, you should take a look at it.

Don't miss this! It has been a great experience to spend two hours here - sadly we had to rush it as we had to take the train, but it's better to allocate no less than two hours, three being better.

Absolutely amazing place with so much history. The 70s neighborhood is clearly a favorite as one can remember some of the things. But the whole old town is definitely worth a visit and some of the nicest to walk through. Definitely one of our favorite places in all of Denmark

Amazing place to visit "the old world" of Denmark and further museums. You might need 3-4 hours for the whole exhibition.
During off-season the price should be lower.
I couldn't understand why the food stands need to use disposal tableware. It is so easy to use ordinary tableware with deposit. It tastes better and it is 100% sustainable.

In this museum it was very informative and also very interesting. It is also most interesting for those who were not yet born in the period of the 1900's. It was kind of a completely different world because nowadays almost everything is different. Very eventful! This museum is definitely to be recommended !!

Fantastic museum of city history.
Do not deceive yourself - see the exhibition "Aarhus tells". The 1970s department is also quite exceptional.

Beautiful place, perfect in Christmas time! We spent a Saturday afternoon in there and the atmosphere was both cosy and informative. It is very nice to have a view of the way of living in the old days and also the most recent ones.

Defenitively the money will.

Defenitively the money will.

Since it is LARPed there, it is suitable for those who still want to really put themselves in their place to really experience the time and the day authentically, for example in the carriage ride for about 8 / round trip to wiggle like "Willy Fog" with a cylinder and suit on the industrial age. Bakeries, books and kiosks are operated like in real life. Of course, adapted to the respective time epoch from late Middle Ages, industrial early & late, 70s +, and currently the range 2000s to 2020. It is really worth an experience!

Gladly dressed again next time!

Idea is quite alright, however there are not that many things to see, attraction for max 1.5-2 hours. Expected a little bit more. Also, the view of new skyscrapers is not helping getting into 1700's and 1800's

Superb museum with actors , three epoches & open doors - you ll feel like being in those days. In particular interesting is the 1974-era, really enjoyed the hippie-flat and moped repair shop! Worth spending a day in!
Restaurants and snacks are available, as well as various places to sit and relax. Great for children is the mini boat trip on a small lake.

We loved the open air museum. It is designed with attention to detail. There are enough free parking spaces available. Parking disc is compulsory (parking time 5 hours free of charge) Dogs are allowed, but they are not allowed in the houses. You should plan 3-4 hours for the stay. There is a lot to discover and try out. The information boards are in Danish, English and German. I can recommend this museum to everyone.

Are you interested in Danish history?

Are you interested in Danish history?
If so, then this place is where to go.
Having found buildings and items of historical value all over Denmark, taking them apart and then move them to this one place in Denmark. That is where you find the real value.
A history of the different places in Denmark along with stories about how the people if different classes lived through the ages is why you should visit it.

Great to be able to experience Denmark through the ages. Fantastic staff dressed the part in period costume and knowledgeable. Houses and businesses from 1500's to 1950's full of history and nostalgia. Horse and cart rides can be experienced along with self-propelled river crossings and old fashioned games can be played. Fascinating for all the family, highly recommended.

Quite incredible. The older (1874) buildings are full of contemporary machinery and tools (printing presses, blacksmith tools, etc) with some interesting museums (eg a watch museum above the clockmaker) and actors; the 1934 buildings include half a dozen vehicles in immaculate condition; 1974 is more hands on-open drawers and fridges (and even vehicles) to see what's inside (the level of detail is incredible) and roam around a fully stocked TV, book, food shop, etc. There's also a local history and a poster museum. Tremendous fun, very engaging, and a place where you can spend hours.

This was the best open air museum that we have been to! We had been to Skansen already (Copenhagen) but Den Gammle By was so nice because it had houses up to the 70s. If you want to show your kids what your house looked like in the 70s I recommend going here. Also go to the traditional bakery.

Nice Christmas market. It quite expensive, especially if you have been there before and only want to visit that part. I guess I am missing something similar to Bakken Christmas market in Aarhus.

About Den Gamle By

Den Gamle By: A Journey Through Time in Denmark

Den Gamle By, which translates to "The Old Town," is a unique museum that takes visitors on a journey through time to explore the history of Danish cities. Located in Aarhus, Denmark, Den Gamle By is the world's first museum dedicated to urban history. It offers an immersive experience that allows visitors to step back in time and experience life as it was lived in three different periods: 1864, 1927, and 1974.

The museum is spread over an area of approximately 75 acres and features more than 75 historic buildings that have been carefully restored and preserved. These buildings include homes, shops, workshops, and other structures that were once part of Danish towns during the three periods represented at Den Gamle By.

Visitors can explore the streets of each period and interact with costumed interpreters who bring history to life by demonstrating traditional crafts such as blacksmithing or baking bread. The museum also hosts special events throughout the year such as Christmas markets or summer festivals where visitors can enjoy live music performances or sample traditional Danish food.

One of the highlights of Den Gamle By is its collection of more than 250,000 artifacts related to urban life in Denmark. These artifacts include furniture, clothing, tools, toys and other items from everyday life during each period represented at the museum. Visitors can see these artifacts on display throughout the various buildings or visit one of several exhibitions dedicated to specific themes such as fashion or transportation.

Den Gamle By also offers educational programs for schools and groups where students can learn about history through hands-on activities such as candle-making or weaving. The museum has won numerous awards for its innovative approach to education including being named European Museum of the Year in 2013.

In addition to its historical significance and educational value, Den Gamle By is also a popular tourist destination attracting visitors from all over the world who are interested in experiencing Danish culture firsthand. The museum has been featured in numerous travel guides including Lonely Planet's "Best In Travel" guidebook series.

Overall Den Gamle By provides a unique opportunity for visitors young and old alike to step back into time while exploring Denmark's rich cultural heritage. Whether you're interested in history or just looking for a fun day out with family or friends this living museum has something for everyone!
