Love that the gallery is FREE! However! There is lots of work to do to utilize the whole space. It feels under utilized and somewhat empty. Start showing movies in that beautiful dome theatre, PLEASE!
The best art gallery in the province! Don t be deceived by the old and forgotten look of the building exterior. This museum was amazing and hopefully will get more funds and sponsorships. We paid $10-12/day on a Sunday afternoon. It was quiet and not too many people. There were plenty of thought-provoking exhibits inside and we re so lucky enough to witness Luke Jerram s Museum of the Moon exhibit. Defined coming back later this year for Yoko Ono s exhibit!
Finally. Calgary is developing its own world class contemporary art gallery.
Quiet, cozy, and fascinating. So much history in such a small building. Stop in and learn something new for free.
Great Gallery! Priced very resonably, if you enjoy modern art I suggest the annual pass, as long as you go twice you'll get your money's worth! Also they used the space so well! So many little exibits as well as beautiful large ones! I loved spending an evening here; go on a date or with friends or take yourself, super easy access and they're open till 9pm on Thursday!
I m still mad that I hadn t discovered this place earlier. It is absolutely incredible and I m so excited for what is coming next. There s definitely a need for you to go and check it out, it has lots of amazing architecture as well as art, if you can book an event they re open to see one I would highly recommend it.
Went with my toddler and baby yesterday. The space and exhibits were beautiful and the kids had a blast. Definitely need to keep an eye on kids as there is a lot fragile art. Thank you for making such an incredible facility, we will be back.
Enjoyed the space and that the building is being used. Staff were nice. We look forward to seeing more exhibitions!
Great reuse of the space as a gallery and the yoko ono exhibit
Really interesting place. Free entry, you can also make a donation.
Great place to visit! Do not miss the The Museum of the Moon until March 15, 2020
Very interesting. Calgary landmark being the old Sparx centre. Very cool parties could be held here with the right imagination. Well divided if your looking for different rooms. Super Interesting.
European style building, with a stunning brutalist architecture and attractive exhibitions. I am excited for the gallery's future developments and upgrades. It is a much needed addition to Alberta's and Calagry's art scene.
Awesome venue and a great place to spend a couple of hours. Highly recommended and the membership price of $20 per year is a steal. Do yourself a favour and check it out
Very nice venue, but also very empty. Hope the collection gets much larger
We attended their Opening Reception for Exposure Photo Festival. Photos were interesting and unusual. We were disappointed in the "Refreshments" they offered. They offered free alcoholic beverages, NO Pop, nor Juice, and NO food. We would prefer that they charge $ people for Beverages, especially alcohol, but offer free food snacks. That would have been much more enjoyable.
Destination art gallery! Check this out if you are looking for an art date/getaway.
Amazing work building up this institution Hats off
We are hoping to buy our memberships as the exhibits multiply and improve in overall scope
Can't afford art in this nightmare, but heard nothing but excellent things about thos business. Maybe someday if I gain my freedom?? Not holding my breath.
For people who haven't been here in 2020, this is a completely different place from even a few months ago. It is a fully-fledged contemporary art gallery and the majority of the space is now home to exhibits with a year of new exhibits already scheduled. The space is great and very unique, if you can go before March 15, the Museum of the Moon exhibit is spectacular. There is an admission cost now, but it is cheap and membership is also very inexpensive. If you like contemporary art, you should check it out.
Looks good so far! Not much to see yet, but will be very cool when there is more art!
Note that they no longer operate at this location. I visited on July 3 and was told by the front desk. According to their website they hold exhibitions at various locations around Calgary now.
Interesting art pieces though there is still enough room to be filled with exhibits.
CC is neat! It's cool to see what they've done to the old science center. The ramp to the main atrium is a joke though. It would be very difficult for a wheelchair user it.
exceptionally cool space. very cool vibes. stupendous art.
The old Science center looks great as a contemporary gallery. I really enjoyed the moon exhibit and I'm excited to see this place evolve.
The installations were well done, really enjoyed Yoko Ono ! Well put together and informative. Omar Ba is an amazing artist, his works tell a story. As well the gallery has an excellent infection control system, well done!!
Very impressive! I was very pleased and so does my friend. We walked in as what we planned for but everything in the museum did give us a great shock. Especially the moon exhibition! They also have introduction for every single art work, so it allows me to understand more instead of see and go. I was also interested in the theme they got at the museum. They support local artist, so does emerging artists who are still younger ones! I was so impressive by a paint on ceiling which painted by an Autism kid. They definitely made this little artist so proud of him/herself! Good work, contemporary museum. I am looking forward to see more exhibition in the future!
Cannot beat the nostalgia of the place; the building is confusing as it was when I was a kid. Are on display demonstrated a high level of creativity and showed levels of perception you might not expect. Keep growing.
This review comes from a person that has been around. Before I stat I would like to remind the reader that art is subjective. In the words of Shia Labeouf, "Everything that moves you is art". I personally did was not "moved" a lot. Some of the exhibits I was just walking by feeling absolutely nothing, a minority made me stop and think "oh, this is nice". The kids however loved it, they were all over the place pointing and discussing and asking questions. So I give it 3 stars, and here is what it means : if you are a young person and you have a date, this may be an interesting place to visit because it is affordable and different. If you are older and have young kids, they may love it. If you are doing it for yourself and you expect to see something that will "move" you, it is most likely that you will be disappointed.
What a fantastic addition this is to Calgary. And a great use of the planetarium space as well. At 20$ for an adult annual membership, and kids being free for quite a while (can't remember the specific age), you really can't go wrong. Super close to the c-train station as well! Check it out and support them to make sure it stays around.
Visited Contemporary Calgary today with my young family. The little ones were blown away by the Museum of the Moon. Super cool building and membership for only $20 .... outstanding deal and can't wait to try some of their interactive sessions in the near future.
Small but interesting gallery - I came here to see the Zimoun installation and was in awe.
Beautiful use of the old science center. Newly renovated to make great use of the space, including the theater!
