Accommodation is superb & staff are friendly.
However, for a 5 star hotel, small things niggle. No nibbles with drinks in the bar, no laundry bags in the rooms & no bread at the breakfast buffet, (which in itself is a let down), in the Tonga room.
Definite room to improve.

So I had a reservation for $649 for the night. They couldn't find my reservation, so they said let's get you a room for $349. Great! Then they found the reservation and said sorry we can no longer offer you the rate of $349, we have to go back. I had a terrible experience at this place.

Booked a very last minute room online and was pleasantly surprised with an upgrade to a Tower suite. staff were courteous and room was immaculate. did not use any of the amenities, but had a great sleep!

But the hardware is too bad, the soundproofing is very bad, and the sound of the sound is still heard.
The parking fee is too expensive to be considered. One night is $75.
It s best to stop the next day and help out.

Beautiful place to stay. We stayed on the 21st floor & looked out at the city & Fishermen's Wharf. Tonga Bar on a Friday night was hopping. We had a great time listening to the band, dancing, dinner, drinks. Food was good.

Went to the Tonga Room at about 5:30 on a Saturday (they don't take reservations if you aren't staying at the hotel). Were informed that dinner service did not start until 6 and there would be an hour wait for a table. We were given the option of waiting 45 minutes for a table in the bar area where we could order drinks and appetizers and were invited to stand in the bar area until the table was ready. We were also advised that if we were still eating at 8pm when the band started we would be charged a $15 each entertainment fee. We went to stand in the bar and ordered two drinks that were strong but not especially good. We then watched as several bar tables were vacated, but no one was seated at them. Underwhelmed by the drinks, and put off by the prospect of paying additional charges for the band, we decided to move on and eat dinner elsewhere. It did 'rain' while we were there, but it was about as impressive as when the produce gets misted at the grocery store.

Elegant trash. Pretentious yet empty fun. Party place for smart people who didn't get an invite to hang out with the cool people who are soon to be homeless drug addicts. The tiki room with the pool had overpriced drinks with minimal excitement after the fake rain became silly and cloying. The other lobby bar had great service but minimal atmosphere. Minimum excitement. As if a traveler would be relieved to get inside for a drink or excited to not stay in the room. The crown room was closed 20 years ago and was the only reason to go the Fairmont if you weren't staying there. Seeing San Francisco with a good drink from the windows of the Crown Room is amazing day or night and a great tragedy that it is no longer an option. Sorry Fairmont but you blew it. Threw away a wonderful bar and glass elevator ride experience and now there's no there there. Kinda like Oakland.

The positives: porters and housekeepers were awesome! Keen to help with our bags, up for a chat, and even put my daughters' stuffed toys on the bed pillows after making the beds. The beds! Was like sleeping on a cloud. The location was fantastic. A balloon with happy birthday on it was in the room for my wife upon checking-in. A nice touch! But, how did they get my wife's birthday? I also asked for a rose to be delivered on the morning of the birthday and they did provide on - at a cost.
The negatives: front desk staff and billing. We paid, for 2 nights, $1,500 Australian dollars to stay at the Fairmont of the Fairmonts. The original. After RVing for a month we wanted some luxury. Checking-in was transactional at best, not warm at all. The room was a slightly bigger version of a Best Western. The ceilings were high and that was the main feature I noticed. The bath you could barely drown a mouse in it. I'm 6"2, knees poking up to my chin. During check-in, I asked for a crib for my 1.5 year old. Went out for lunch, upon returning, still not in our room. Asked again, went out for dinner, came back, not there still, called the front desk, asked for it, 20 minutes later, still nothing. By this stage, it was 9:30pm, my wife filled out a survey on the iPad available in each room (a cool feature), saying we were not happy with the service. Straight away got a call from the front desk and they said it will be sent up straight away. 10pm, NOTHING! My sister gave them an earful, was reassured, and then it turned up. 5 TIMES we asked from 2pm to 10pm. Were they assembling it? Cutting down the wood? Oh, and also, the WIFI didn't work that first night, so an engineer came and said the node was in the next room and couldn't access it until the morning. He said we can watch movies for free that first time (remember this key detail because they DID CHARGE ME FOR IT at check-out). Check-out: They billed me for the half movie we watched $20 - a bit steep. Then they also charged for $25/day for a "destination tax" - not sure what they was, but got told it was for access to the gym, wifi, etc. I never got asked or even agreed to this. If we are being charged $750 a night, you would figure this would all be included. Seriously, I stayed at $31/night RV parks that have free wifi! Upon telling the front desk staff that I did not agree to that and that the engineer said the movies were free, he said, "Oh, okay, we won't charge you then." This was an ideal response but the fact that he was so laissez-faire about it did raise my suspicions.
Bottom line: Why is it that this place is so expensive per night that everything else about it is so expensive and frankly, greedy? Here is $750 a night, but we will charge you extra for internet, charge you extra for gym access, charge you extra for breakfast. There's a metaphor in there somewhere.

Went to have drinks and dinner with a friend who was staying there. The rooms were well maintained and orderly and well appointed. The restaurant was nicely lit , and the service was really top notch. A hotel from the luxury days. A dying breed for certain, but very well maintained. The age of the hotel shows in the conspicuous places like the elevators and the like , but it's maintained very well. The drinks and the food were both nice and the espresso afterwards was quite good too. Overall I rate this 4 stars, I took away a star mostly because for a hotel of this stature , and price to match, this is not the best I've had. Any of the luxury hotels in South East Asia & Middle East will handily beat the service and the experience. But still one of the best experiences I've had in the United States.

Phenomenal experience. From the reservation representative, front desk and all the employees in between, I was continuously greeted with enthusiasm and a willingness to help. The room accommodations in the main building was beautiful, with views of the bay and The Rock. The grounds are impeccable and full of historical images.

The rooms were great the staff for the most part were friendly, with the exception of some of the door staff, rather snooty, and unhelpful, if you weren't in a suit and tie, nd since we were there on vacation, my suits and tuxedo were at home.
The rooms were great, room service was my youngest son's favorite thing, the work out room was good, and the lobby staff was excellent. Parking was a bit much, especially when you factor in the room rates, $70 a night to park "ouch".

The only reason that I give the Fairmont 4 instead of a 5 is the restaurant. The breakfast buffet was $34 per person, which isn't bad if it was something with a SF flair, no, it was hum-drum eggs benedict was the most "exotic" item on the menu. Lunch and dinner were not any better, since we were traveling with my 77 yo mother, we wanted to stay close to the room for dinner, and it was boring. SF is such a great foodie place, I would expect a hotel as nice as the Fairmont to be on par, if not surpassing, other SF restaurants, however that was not the case, I recommend that you go to the Fog Fish House, or another restaurant on the wharf to enjoy some great local seafood cuisine, instead of dining at the Fairmont house restaurant, or eat at the lounge. Derek and company in the Fairmont lounge do a great job, of keeping your spirits high, glasses full, and offering up some nice bar/lounge food items.
A must stay in SF is the Fairmont, avoid the dining pitfall, and enjoy the outside of the resort restaurants. Also stop by the roof top garden, it is a secret that the smokers keep to themselves, very beautiful and relaxing, if tempted grab a nice cigar, and glass of port or scotch, and enjoy a forbidden pleasure of a time gone by.

Five nights is a stretch at any hotel. It flew by during a recent stay with my nephew. We had incredible pricing which included $65 breakfast allowance per day for each room plus another $100 per room for food and drink over the course of our stay. Sure, we had interior rooms; but, each was more than satisfactory and had luxurious BR with tub.
The staff treated us like family. The polish on this property is clearly reflected in the professionalism, courtesy and respectful treatment of the staff we had the good fortune to meet. At the concierge desk Henry and Tom, both Fairmont veterans, were so helpful.
The property is so beautifully maintained with its huge facade and impressive interiors.
Fairmont guests include movie stars, rock stars and Presidents. No apologies.

Much more is expected from a hotel like this. More than a day they did not put towels on us. They made us wrong charges and we had to complain. The location is not the best if you want to walk around the city.

The lobby was impressive and the staff friendly. Lines were long at the concierge desk. The automatic door at the entrance makes for more accessibility. However please note this hotel is at the top of a very steep hill.

Extremely Dishonest Staff

It's an old hotel living on past glories. Avoid at all costs... and believe me, it will cost you.

When we first checked in we were escorted to an old, drab room overlooking the hotel's noisy services, not the exterior harbor view room we pre-paid for. It was only after a lengthy dispute with management did they finally admit they oversold the hotel. I'd actually be fine if they didn't try to be sneaky about it and tell us before we checked in.

We were promised an $80 breakfast credit per day as compensation, only to be told on checkout there was no such agreement. The manager simply stood there and lied to my face.

The hotel has glamour, but no class.
