The food was decent, but the service was one of the worst I've experienced.
Our server was beyond rude, and borderline condescending. I wasn't feeling particularly hungry so I only ordered an appetizer and a soup while my son ordered a more full meal.
From the moment that I told the server my order he started to become very snappy.
He later came back and asked about the food. I told him that the soup was too salty for me he didn't ask what he could do to help and he turned around quickly while only saying "ok, no worries" without doing anything about it. The way he said it was extremely derisive and not the service I was expecting at a restaurant with a good reputation.
I did not enjoy my experience because of my waiter and would not recommend this restaurant.

Had lunch at Commander s Palace and it was excellent. The food, presentation and service was superb. Our server Robert was outstanding and made our meal memorable. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting New Orleans.
I prefer local restaurants in NO to the tourist traps. I have never been one to dine somewhere because it is what people do. The service was great and it was a very good atmosphere but overpriced and the food was nothing special . However, the desserts were wonderful and 25c martinis are hard to turn down. I would give it a 3 1/2 if I could.
This place although iconic and a regional institution of culinary standards, has truly lost its passion. It IS solely a turn-n-burn revenue machine that could care less about their guests. Perhaps you can't blame them if more than three-quarters of your clientele are one shot only tourists. I walked in not knowing anything about the restaurant. Asked for the bar. I was escorted to the bar and Emma (bartender) took my order of a Sazerac and continued conversation with a co-worker and ignored me. After 10min, I went to the maitre d' to express my disappointment about their service. He looked at me, apologized and proceeded to help the next quest. I have eaten at a plethora of fine dining establishments all over the world, even at El Bulli, French Laundry, Saison, Guy Savoy, just to name a handful. This place thinks they're beyond that. Well far from it. A passionate restaurant still respects their guests and engages them sincerely. I'm glad two blocks away was Coquette with superior service and quality. Commander's Palace will be relegated to the unknowing tourist who dines brand name and drinks Sutter Home.
This 100+ year old place is a land mark to New Orleans has been serving Creole cuisine for a long time. The atmosphere is heart of the place with a old world feel. There is a strict dress code so please read up on their site to double check. Sunday brunch is a must if you have time.
Crescent City cuisine has many embodiments outside the city, but if I had to choose but one place to enjoy the New Orleans experience, it would be this stately, historic, cultural institution. The setting is beautiful, the service is attentive, and the food is unrivaled. The redfish is rich and flaky, the turtle soup is thick and smokey, and the desserts are too much to handle. Commander's is not a meal, it is an experience.
Wow! Dwyane & Stuart made my birthday a perfect evening! This was my first time to NOLA, & when we come back this fabulous restaurant will be on the list.
Fancy New Orleans restaurant you have to get dressed up for. The 6 course tasting menu was delicious as was the paired wine. The staff are exceptional and keen to engage. The set menu will set you back $200 a head with tip and taxes included.
We had a wonderful dinner here the other night. They gave us a lovely upstairs table with a wonderful view of the patio. Every course was wonderful. Even the grilled shrimp added to their signature salad were unspeakably good. From the current menu, I recommend the pecan-crusted gulf fish and the strawberry shortcake. They have some super reasonable wines too. And their cocktail list right now is great. Sunset on the Patio and their vodka collins are both worth a try. As always, the staff is friendly, efficient, and attentive. Great all around night.
We haven't been to Commander's in years. The last time may have been to celebrate my wife's graduation from Tulane Law School...and that was, well, some time ago.
But being back in New Orleans for a few days, my wife and I decided to do Commander's again, and our son, who was born in New Orleans, flew down from Boston to join us. We asked a concierge at the Roosevelt Hotel to arrange reservations at the time we needed on a Saturday night, which she kindly did.
Commander's Palace is rightly known for its great service, and that was the case on this visit. Several different servers and runners are constantly looking out for you, to see if you need anything, but it's not so much that it's a bother. We of course started with cocktails. Two of us had Sazaracs, which were excellent and only $9 (drinks in general are moderately priced at Commander's, and at lunch sometimes they do the 25 cent martini thing.) I had a vodka martini, which was not quite dry enough and not cold enough, so I switched to a gin martini, which was perfectly dry and very cold, though Commander's didn't have my first two choices of gin -- Plymouth and Old Tom. I settled for Tangueray.
We then had salads and soup as starters. My Commander's Romaine Salad was fantastic, with homemade bacon and a special dressing. The famed Turtle Soup was excellent, though to my taste a bit salty, and the one-one-one "flight" of soup (gumbo, turtle and soup of the day) was a hit.
The hit of the meal may have been the unique Commander's Bread Pudding, which is much lighter than most bread puddings in New Orleans, with a kind of merengue topping and whisky sauce. Absolutely fantastic. You need to order this early in your meal.
Commander's menu is, somewhat surprisingly, fairly limited. The entire menu fits on one side of a large menu card. They only do perhaps a dozen main dishes, but what they do they do very well.
Is Commander's my favorite restaurant in New Orleans? No, but the lovely Garden District setting, the history, the great service and the dependable dishes are worth the cost, which can be considerable. With three entrees, two salads, three soups, two cocktails each, plus a glass of wine each (we Ubered to and from the restaurant), plus one dessert, the tab came to about $130 per person including tax and tip. Not something you would do every weekend, but worth it for a splurge night out. We were in the restaurant for nearly three hours, so a visit to Commander's is pretty much a full evening.
Most expensive places either make you pay for the food, or the atmosphere, but not both. Well, you get both here, and it isn t even that expensive. Probably ate some of the best food of my entire life. The whole experience is out of this world. It s like being transported back into another time. They highly recommended dressing up because of the dress code. I recommend it because it just makes you feel a part of the place.
Simply the best meal we had in New Orleans. The service was comforting and spotless, the food was wonderful. I asked for a tour of the kitchen, they showed us right in. Really worth it.
Seriously delicious food, wow. You can tell that they've been doing this for a while! The service was totally pro and white glove as well. This place is definitely a perfect choice for a special occasion.
Some truly excellent food. I don't think any plate that hit our table was anything short of very good, and many were great. The staff were courteous and attentive. The only downside (which you probably won't experience) is that our table was right next to the staging area for the upper dining room, so we had a steady stream of wait staff and regular chair bumps over the evening. Nothing awful, but at this caliber and price point of restaurant not something I would have expected.
My wife and I were here to celebrate her birthday. 5 stars for service but 1 star for food. Absolutely not worth it! We both started with chicken and sausage gumbo. However I got all the chicken and sausage! My wife had zero meat on hers. Plus the dark brown beef flavor was not good and there was no rice.
Then we had the whole Red Snapper and Filet mignon. Both were salty and over cooked.
I do recommend the shrimp starter and the bread pudding.
Hope this helps anyone looking to try a nice restaurant. We will never return.
Expected more. The dishes were Ok, nothing special tho. Service was slow (because it was busy) and the waiter forgot one of our orders. I thought this place was a bit overrated.
Our absolute favorite NOLA restaurants for a NICE date night. They are adamant about their dress code which keeps it an upscale place. Food and service are out of this world. It is a must if you are a foodie or just want a nice date night in NOLA.
I suggest they sell a few men's shirts in the lobby. We drove all day and were looking forward to dining for brunch. I forgot to pack a collared shirt, my fault. I understand they have a dress code... however, we were not dressed inappropriately.. shoes, pants, a nice v- neck. The attendant suggested a store a few blocks down to get a shirt... we drove there and it had nothing. Very disappointing for our efforts. I think they could have made an exception.
This is a great way to get a taste of wonderful southern cuisine and Southern culture. Though I think they take themselves a little seriously (no shorts, a little uptight about kids) the food is good and both times I've been I've enjoyed the people watching. Oh...and $.25 martinis...that alone is worth it.
It was my first time there after living in New Orleans for 10 years. It was beautiful. Every bite was impressive. One of the owners came and spoke to us for about 10 minutes while we were finishing dinner. And he had an active conversation, not just cliche"d small talk, which made the visit feel very genuine and warm. It's also not as pricy as you may think. 5 stars for sure.
Its Commander's and undoubtedly expensive but the value of the experience is there. I took a date there and was thoroughly impressed by the food and service, although it felt gimmicky to a point, it was well coordinated.
Omg!! The grits were so good we ordered more. The quail was amazing. The shrimp n grits was perfectly balanced n delicious. Service was impeccable. They truly honor the art of service in a 5 star restaurant. Must, must go see!!
Well worth every penny! Food was exquisite, wait staff was phenomenal, atmosphere was one of a kind. We entered the restaurant to a hallway lined of servers greeting us. Which made us feel like royalty. We were sat and given napkins that best match each of our ensembles. Our team of waiters (3), lead by Amiee was quite the cherry on top to the whole experience. I will gladly say this is a must for anyone who would like to feel special or make a part member feel like royalty.
Wow! Everything you have ever expected from a dinning experience becomes reality in this place. Service was beyond amazing and the food, oh the food! Best meal I have had in new orleans for a while.
Commander's Palace is a nice place to go and eat at. If you are a person who love to eat Cajun food especially seafood, so this would be the best place to go. It is only a two hour drive and it is located in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is also a very expensive place to dine, but the food is worth the price.
Love this place. Best service anywhere. Not to mention great food and free Valet so parking is never an issue!. You have to try the bread pudding souffle.
After hearing so much about this restaurant, we were greatly disappointed. The food was average at best and the room was so loud that we couldn't hear well enough to carry on a conversation with the person across the table from us. In addition to the din of noise created by multiple voices in a crowded room, a group of musicians - including a trumpet - moved from table to table throughout our meal. A truly frenetic experience.
Truly an experience. Food is definitely very good, approaching excellent - but what sets them apart is the incredible service and ambiance the staff sets to give you a very memorable experience. Perfect for a special occassion, and not overly pricey when you factor in the $0.25 (weekday) lunch time martini special!
Want some grits? That ll be $300. I m from the bayou, I can make all this for less than $20. I get it, they re fancy foo-foo, but seriously, grits? For $289? With some soup and pie? Son, you must be out of your mind. Popeyes is right down the street.
Beyond phenomenal. The duck, quail, and even cabbage left us speechless. The level of service we received was above and beyond. A trip to New Orleans would not be complete without visiting the Commanders Place!!
Hit and miss. Service is impeccably attentive but slow and had some strange oversights/mistakes. Turtle soup was flavorful but oversalted. My pork entree was fantastic but my wife's quail entree was bad enough that she didn't bother finishing and got something to eat afterwards.
I came here after going on a Lafayette Cemetery/Garden District walking tour. When I arrived there were balloons on the tables and was worried I was crashing someone's party but they assured me that was for the brunch. The staff were friendly, helpful, and interesting. The food, oh my, the food you get what you pay for. The turtle soup au sherry was unusual but delicious, the steak was swoon-worthy, and Lally's Praline Parfait is heaven in a parfait dish. I also made some friends here with whom I am still in touch. Definitely lives up to its reputation, will visit again and bring friends and family when I find myself in NOLA.
The stuff its good, helpful, and the atmosphere its amazing, the food its good, was expecting little bit more from the chef. Shrimps was good, but the garnish was just ok, some red beans and other cold veggies. Otherwise good place, not sure if will come there again
The service is outstanding. The waitstaff and come of the chefs greet you at the door. I got the birthday treatment with balloons and a chefs hat. Got the pre fixed lunch. Gumbo was watered down and not as flavorful as say, kpauls. Other food was stellar.
I went for jazz brunch and was not disappointed. The portions were very generous, the service was impecible, and the table side jazz performance put it over the top.
The palace is a fine dining experience, we ate in the lower level "the bird room" which has remarkable decorating including actual taxidermied birds on the wall. I had the quail with the turtle soup as an appetizer and it was very good. I will note that there was some thought of doing The "chef's tasting menu" however to do such required the entire table ordering as such. We were there for my girlfriend's birthday and her desert (not complementary) did come adorned with A birthday candle. The bread pudding souffle was most people's choice for dessert though I was not as impressed as the reviews it got. The service was pleasant and our waiter Troy was nice but occasionaly snarky. I would absolutely eat here again though there are other places I might consider ahead of it. The prices are to be expected at any fine dining establishment and over all are fairly reasonable.
Very cool place, reasonably priced for fine dining although not too formal. Service was perfect all evening. Had bananas foster for dessert, they did a great job with tableside flambe.
Nice setup inside, staff are friendly. Wait is somehow longer than normal and than expected. But food is good, even though debatable whether worth the price. Cheese cake and bread pudding souffle recommended
