Nice place, expensive. A bit loud outside but otherwise the breakfast and staff are professional. Guests are also interesting as the price keeps the rats out

How do I start......
AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING !!
From stepping in the door to leaving the door.
This place is better than any hotel I have ever stayed in. The team at coco mama are awesome.
Shae, moo all of you are just unreal and always there to help.
Rooms are tidy bed is lovely. Slept right through.
Free breakfast in the morning and the chance to meet some new amazing people.
I 1000000% will be going back to coco mama
Thank you for making us feel welcome !! See you in may !!
Excellent place to stay. Staff all really friendly and engaging. The residential cat was a treat to have as company and the rooms were exactly what we needed. Many thanks!
Overall a great hostel to stay in. All the hosts are really friendly and helped us out a ton in finding things to do in Amsterdam. Free breakfast is a plus and the kitchen/common area is very nice. The 6 bed dorm is a little tight with 3 bunks stacked on top of each other but overall the room was clean and has large windows opening on the back yard. It's outside of the city center but I don't like staying in the red light district anyways and they also rent bikes so you can get anywhere easily. I would definitely stay here again.
Great hostel to stay in amsterdam and cleanest with perfect staff crew . So cheap and close to important places . They are so helpful
Great vibe, chill people (quite family friendly) and clean rooms. Staff is super helpful and quite happy to share experiences with you. Every night there are group activities, highly recommend the red light district - the best tour I got in Amsterdam!
I would like to have 0 stars to rate this hostel but, unfortunately, 1 is the lowest grade I can give. I got attacked from bedbugs at Cocomana hostel, so I warmly suggest to STAY AWAY from there. But this is not the worst part of the story. The treatment received from the apparently nice staff of the hostel is worthy a review: late replies, NO refund provided, only useless explanations. That's what I got. I think guests deserve more than this, especially in these cases.
I d read the 1 star reviews pretty consistent the photos look nothing like the room is. Stayed for a week we complained about the terrible smell coming from the bathroom (smelled like sulfur aka rotten eggs) and they didn t bother to do anything for us.
The price of a private room and bathroom is ridiculous I d recommend staying at an Airbnb over this place. They also emailed accusing me of taking a blow dryer bag (which I did not).... this place was pretty nasty probably got lost under the dusty bed that they never bothered to clean before we got there...
Stayed there for two nights. The reception was warm, I was welcomed with a wine and all information asked was provided in a map. The hostel is clean, not crowded. It has a small garden, a fat cat and a kitchen to cook.
Very nice hostel, with a wonderful atmosphere and nice service. In particular, the sanitary facilities are in excellent condition
Great hostel, wonderful people. Lived-in atmosphere with fun music playing from people's phones in the kitchen/living room downstairs. Joop the cat has the cutest meows and green bean diet. The staff are young like most of the guests, friendly, host events and dinners, and are generally very cool. Guests congregate in the living area during downtime, which has some cereal and pasta available for anyone's use.
The location is fairly central, close to the street market, Museum District, various squares with pubs and restaurants, and only a short walk or bus ride to the downtown. My only complaint is that my bunk bed shook and swayed when anyone above me, regardless of size, shifted during the night.
Overall excellent and cheap, would stay again.
Great place to stay in Amsterdam. Really cosy and confortable. People are really nice. Location is great
Totally covered in bed bugs!
Went for a Friday night with a friend to kick off a bike trip. We ended up totally covered in bed bug bites. About 50-100 bites each. I asked for our money back and, after admitting that they struggled with bed bugs, they said they could only refund 50% as we "still had access to the kitchen, bathrooms, and other facilities."
In addition, I had asked in advance if there was safe parking for our expensive touring bikes. They told us that we could park the bikes in the garden. However, once we arrived they said no because of our plan to leave early. We ended up having to lock the bikes on the street.
A full refund would have been the most appropriate thing in this circumstance but the hostel was unwilling.
Very good location, min from N4 bus stop, room are a bit small but enough, staff are great and friendly, living room amd kitchen very well mantained. A must stay
Great comfortable hostel with plenty of opportunities (nice shared common area, communal meals and planned events) to meet other travellers
It is a really nice place with excellent staff - however is a completely unsuitable if you have mobility issues
I absolutely love this Hostel and its atmosphere. Let's start with the arrival and check in.
So I booked a room for myself and a friend via hostelworld. I arrived a bit later than him, but he could check-in without a problem.
The big rooms (6+ people) are beautifully designed in a typical Dutch fashion with white wooden beds and little curtains. To be very fair, the bathroom fan was broken on our room 'Windmill'. Thus, it seems there were dark spots at the ceiling from humidity which definitely needs to be taken care of. The rooms are clean and tidy.
The hostel offers breakfast included in the basement which is great and has all you need. It's just from 9-11,so definitely check it out. The basement as well is quite comfy and inviting. We had a lot of fun chats and chill outs there with other guests.
I definitely enjoyed my stay, although the Cocomama is not the first choice of hostels I'd go for in Amsterdam, because of the location and prices. Location, by the way, is a metro or tram ride from main station and few stops from the city center, so definitely not bad, you should get a ticket though.
It's important to mention the hostel adopted a poor little cat which is somewhat ugly, but cute as hell. People with an allergy should be aware of this, although the kitty never went upstairs.
My friend Derek is staying here. Seems great though.
Staff were very friendly! Just a bit of street noise and smoke smell in the basement, but overall nice experience!
I've never been to a hostel so well designed for solo travellers. I made about 20 friends here in 3 days, and when there wasn't anyone around in the common room the staff more than made up for it (Shoutout to the Scottish chick who told us about Disco Dolly! BEST NIGHT EVER) beds were super comfortable too and I never had to take transport to get anywhere.
Staff very friendly. A little bit pricey but still reasonable. Noise travels easily up the stairs.
The location was great, near museums and the Heineken Brewery! The rooms were well taken care of the bathrooms were very clean. We walked in and the people were quite friendly and fun to talk to!
Cocomama was a great hostel to stay at in Amsterdam. The girls that run it will help you with cool places to go and they have evens there most nights. They also have "family dinner" which you can pay for but if there isn't enough interest it could be cancelled and you're SOL. Sometimes they seem disinterested in helping but I think it's because many of them live there and get so many of the same questions.
Excellent place to stay, this was my second time and it was a pleasure, staff are friendly and a great warm atmosphere. Highly recommended
Very friendly and wonderful hostel.
I stayed in 3 different types of shared living situations on my trip to Amsterdam and this was definitely my favorite
In no particular order I really enjoyed the cat. The kitchen. The hosts. Location. As well as the general ambiance and fresh theme.
It was fairly affordable and I will go back again for sure!
Nice and affordable hostel near the cultural district of Amsterdam. Walking distance from musea and theatres.
Really a great hostel. The lounge invites you to linger, you can cook there and many things are at leisure. A small fridge with drinks and snacks is also there and everything costs only one euro. Here it can be sustained. Also from the free breakfast & the friendliness of the staff we were convinced. However, speaking English fast is an advantage, but not a must: D. I was thrilled that in the bathroom of our double room the products of "stop using water while using me" were provided. Sustainability points in top.
Lovely atmosphere, great staff, nice communal area. However I woke in the morning heavily bitten. I was certain it was bed bugs, but when I complained they blamed it on mosquitoes. Surely neither should be present? Needles to say no compensation was received and I thought the entire situation was dealt with poorly. I have stayed in many hostels in Amsterdam and have never been bitten. Im disappointed to say this was my worst experience of a hostel in Amsterdam. I often stay at StayOk and though both clinical and impersonal it is impressively clean, cheaper and has a better breakfast. If you are going to charge a premium for a "boutique" hostel the bare minimum you could do would be to make it hygienic.
The Cocomama staff was absolutely fantastic. Nino gave us a map of the city and pointed out all the most important things to check out. The beds were the most comfortable of any hostel I've stayed in. Each bed had curtains and a light with an outlet where you could charge your phone. The beers and other snacks were not just reasonably priced, but cheap! If I ever come back to Amsterdam, this is the place I will stay. The rooms were clean, the staff friendly, and the atmosphere relaxed.
loved staying at cocomama. loved the staff!!! wish i were still there
Great place to stay! Clean and comfortable and had the good fortune of meeting a ton of great people on their alternative bar crawl. Just don't overpack because their spiral staircase is scary with heavy luggage.
Great staff and nice location in the middle of it all. Plus a lot of items available for rent like bikes and such making it very convenient!
Great hostel, with a friendly staff. Would definitely recommend for a short stay
Had a pretty good stay here for a few nights. The detractors are that bathrooms are all in the dorms, so it can be a bit of a pain if you have to wait for people to clear through the shower one at a time. Fortunately there is a single common-area toilet on the main floor. The other detractor is that the buildings doors slam quite forcefully so guests returning late can wind up making a lot of noise. That said they run awesome nightly events for guests, the common area in the basement/garden are superb, and home-made breakfast is included. I d stay here again.
Like many comments below, I got 2 or 3 mosquito bites in the night. It s summer and the window needs to stay wide open to stay comfortable in the room. I think people complaining about bed bugs don t know what bed bugs are or got them somewhere else.
Firstly, the bedbugs are still there and not eradicated as mentioned in the other reviews. Secondly, I don't enjoy being woken up at 3am by the pained wails of some dumb b-----s having sex on the bunk above me. Maybe they should advertise themselves as a sex hostel instead. At 2-3 people in a bed per night, what a cost saving deal! Funny how they bothered to whisper after they were done though, like they hadn't woken the entire room.
Anyway the room and beds are far older and dirtier than what is pictured on the website. Plenty of funky stains around and the bathroom has a permanent stench.
And of course, no refunds.
Whilst this place looks really nice, we stayed here for two nights. The price was very expensive. We booked the couples room which had a lovely big bath and very big, comfortable bed. The three things that utterly ruined it for us:
1) BEDBUGS, we were eaten alive, well over 40 bites and the shells and poo were visible on inspecting the mattress closely
2) curtain missing which meant that the room never really got dark as the lights from the main living area were on all night glaring into the room
3) NOISE. Possibly the noisiest place I ve ever stayed in. They even provided earplugs at reception which were useless as the doors banged all through the night. The walls are so thin you can hear every conversation.
One night the heating was turned off, it got so cold we had to use the hairdryer to warm the room (not remotely eco)
Sadly wouldn t recommend.
It was really a bad stay. Only one thing was good and was the common area. I paid 250 because I used an electronic cigarette in my room. That's crazy!!
We were charged more than we booked it, so we asked to refund the difference.
We opted for the private room with ensuite, and we were given a basement room which is shabby compared to what is seen in the photos (photos are overexposed with natural light).
On the second day we had no heating.
We asked for another room, or a portable heating fan, but we were only offered more blankets.
The windows have gaps and are not sealed from the bottom so cold air comes in especially since it was 4 degrees outside. Due to this lack of maintenance, you can hear people talking from outside everytime someone goes out for a smoke, and also next to the room is a wooden stairs to a common area. This stairs creates a lot of noises with footsteps and this happens very frequent.
It s hard to sleep well in the room.
To top it all when we emailed management, Joey was hesitant and unprofessional bringing excuses that the historical building was a brothel. He doesn t want to understand it s not a brothel anymore, but hosting guests.
Gaps should be sealed, it has nothing to do with being an old building, and a heating backup should be available. When we asked for a refund he only gave us 16.60 since he felt the room was cheap!
Such excuses can fool young backpackers in the dormitory paying cheap prices, but we paid an average 87 per night in February!
Just wish I could've stayed longer, all the guests and hosts were very friendly, great all-around hostel experience!
Nice hostel with small rooms but a good location for exploring.
Very friendly place. Nice clean rooms. They offer daily tours or other fun activites. Good resources about local spots. Also complementary breakfast in the morning from 9 to 11am. GET UP EARLY OR ITS GONE! No curfews just be reasonable and everyone is chill. Sweet room in the basement to just chill in. 11/10 would recommend and for what you get the price can't be beat!
DONT STAY HERE MY BODY IS COVERED WITH BITES FROM BEDBUGS. When i told them, they said they would call the company to fix the room, but offered me NO refund and in turn almost charged me TWENTY EURO bc i couldn t find my room key (even though nobody told me that would be a charge if i lost it). ALSO, the staff is only available from 9-9 so If you have an emergency, you re screwed, like the guy who was roaming around at 3 am saying Help! Someone who works here! Bc something in his room kept setting off an alarm. AVOID AVOID AVOID PLEASE
just amazing, went there about 7 years ago when they just opened and the staff was fun, rooms were bright, clean and really comfortable. nice little spot to hangout in the basement. and great location, I think the price went up now because it is so in demand, but now every spot in Amsterdam is expensive, so Cocomama is highly recommended!
Awesome staff - so helpful and friendly. The hostel's environment feels very home-y, with "family" meals and walking tours of the red light district, pub crawls, etc. Clean rooms, common room, kitchen. There is also a friendly hostel cat, Joop, who made the experience even better. Would love to stay again :)
Absolutely fantastic hostel, the best staff you can ask for... Highly recommend to anyone, regardless of age or travel plans
Certainly over-priced. Rooms including toilets are very basic and small! Lockers are tiny and you need to bring your own padlock or you will have to rent one for a charge. Rooms are completely different from what is shown on the internet, so please don't expect a modern lodging. As I only stayed for one night, i cannot really comment on other facilities offered at the hostel.
Enjoyed a private room for a few nights here and everything from checking in as well as the entire stay was delightful and pleasant. Very relaxing vibe with a homely feel. Plenty of activities available if you don t have your own agenda. Highly recommended and would certainly stay again the next time in town!
Great place, felt very welcomed. Staff were extremely helpful of guiding my friend and me to places to go visit I would highly recommend this place
Awesome hostel. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The other guests were great too. The kitchen and common area is nice. The rooms are a bit small. Good location too.
Very friendly and informative staff, great location with just 50m to the tram or 15 min walk to the city. Very basic roomswith bunkbeds but with a nice private bathroom, perfect for my needs.
Very friendly staff. They are strict mostly letting you checkin at 4pm. The 4 bed dorm has its own in room Toilet and The single room with a queen bed option is also available normally at the rates of a 3 star hotel. Breakfast is free and there is a mini garden too. Kitchen can also be used for cooking and refrigerator can be used to store your stuff.
Its good.. and enquire if your nationals staying on the same time..
Nice sanitary. Only the price was a bit disappointing. But still 4 stars because the staff was very customer friendly.
