I live in North Carolina and while visiting New York, had to go to the BVAMC emergency room. I was treated like I was special. They scheduled a follow up for me and genuinely showed concern for my service connected injuries as well as my non-service connected. I was so impressed I continued getting health care from the BVAMC and decided to make it my primary facility for my medical needs. In fact I travel from NC to the BVAMC for my appointments. I've gotten better care from this VA hospital then I have received my entire affiliation with VA medical facilities except for treatment I've received from Duke. I commend all the staff I have come in contact with, God bless each and everyone of you who take your care giving seriously towards Veterans.

I've undergone cervical spine surgery at Bronx. Every aspect from check in to discharge were handled in both a timely and efficient manner. My surgeon as well as the surgical team were compassionate and caring, as were post-op follow up visits. If I need to voice a complaint, the ONLY thing that comes to mind is the ongoing difficulty in finding a parking space.

Considering what the staff has to deal with on a daily basis, I m very impressed by the breadth of service, professionalism, and efficiency with which this VA location is run. Living in Manhattan, I deliberately travel up to this location to get treatment and intend to keep doing so.

The location looks nice and the Medical staff and patients are friendly based on my experience, but the Internship Office is a whole' nother ball-game. I was directed there by the Volunteer Office because of my Educational background. I was then met with a VERY unprofessional staff member (a hispanic young lady with long hair), unfortunately I did not catch her name. That being said for someone trying to invest in the community through volunteer service, it appears that they are NOT in need of people, based on my brief interactions with both the Volunteer and Internship department. All I can conclude is that they were simply too LAZY to do their job. How unfortunate.

This facility has neglected a veteran with stage 4 throats cancer. Consultation after consultation since October. Denied pain meds ("take Advil") prostate, insulin and blood pressure meds. Treatment still has not begun - disgusting lack of treatment of a Navy Vet!

Need to go to a hospital is never fun. But the people who work here try to make it as convenience as possible. Very patient, very informative, and you can tell that they really understand that every person here is an individual. They really made the process bearable.

The quality of care and attention is phenomenal here. One things tho is general surgery initially offered me outpatient woundcare but when they realized that i didnt have outside insurance they no longer authorized it. I guess i wasnt in their budget.

I came to the emergency room. Most of the doctors here speak broken English they have us waiting outside in the hallway. Then they called me inside where there are a bunch of us in chairs where they ask us personal mediCal questions in a crowd of people. I don't think they have to comply with HIPAA REGULATIONS. I thought they worked on making things better for for us. I was wrong. I am not complaining about the medical care. I am just complaining on the lack of respect they are displaying. Wow.

I've stayed at three different private hospitals in upscale neighborhoods and none of them were nearly as good as James Peters Med Center. The staff is kind, efficient, responds within seconds. The hospice / geriatrics wing is beautifully run. They even have have (no charge) rooms available in the building for visitors who come from more than 50 miles away.I honestly cannot think of any way to improve the service.

As a Veteran who sustained a Spinal Cord Injury in the Military, my Neurologist sent me to the Bronx VA to have another surgery at the End of October 2012.
This VA is a DISASTER. ONE OF THE WORST EXPERIENCIES IN MY LIFE. There is not enough room on the review to tell how bad this VA treated me.

While visiting a family member there I was extreme...

While visiting a family member there I was extremely disappointed that our Vetrans have to deal with incompetent medical staff. Our family member was moved from ICU to the 7th floor. Where the CMA (one in particular short with white hair or super lite blonde hair was so rude and disrespectful not only to nurses but the patients as well . I tried to reas her badge to see her position and name and it was flipped. One of the medical staff said she was a CMA. Walked over to ask for help and see if I could get some towels for our family who is there with cancer and she gave me the talked to be had answer. She was hand in my face and shake her head gesturing know and said not me find someone else. all I said was is there anyone you can direct me to to get what we need to continue to shake her head and say not me find someone else. I assume she was doing something very important and was I don t know maybe a charge nurse her a scientist because she was just on the computer the whole time. come to find out she was just CMA. She was loud and when one of the great nurses or should I say one of two of great nurses who is caring for a family member asked her to please slow down and not make so much noise she looked at I m smart and when even harder and louder. The medical staff that came in to do his vitals it was very hard to understand their words I don t if it was an accident thing or what but very hard to understand and when they went into the room the bank on everything and it times it come in with no gown or gloves or mask as it stated on the door to do so. The medical staff that came in to do his vitals where loud banging the machine into trash cans and wall. It was hard to understand there are words I don t know if it was an accent thing or what but very hard to understand and when they went into the room. At times they d come in with no gown a gloves and a mask as it stated on the door to do so. Luckily my family members wife or I cut them before they went all the way in. The patient next door was allowed to have the TV full blast and when asked if he could lower the volume the evening nurse who was little nicer seemed scared to even ask the patient to lower the TV. There were two amazing nurses Chris and a charge nurse Who I believe her name was Deanna or Deanne. I walked around and read the post on note of the walls on that floor regarding patient care and team work as staff. In paper it all sounds good but in person it s not there. These are sick Veterans some worse than others. I see no empathy no actual nurse and patient care. Like I said I was there A week and the only two were the ones mentioned and two CMA Grace and Kim who sadly weren t there much and only seen them once while there. The house keeping men that were there OMG loud, and rude and super noisy. I am sorry I am married to a RN Supervisor who works for LACounty for over 29yrs and loves what he does and understand the Oath of being a nurse. Who was a phlebotomist, LVN and RN and now a supervisor. I honestly think that there needs to be more medical staff that can have their speaking understood. (for those patients who have trouble hearing and understanding words due to the illness )
Lastly the 7th floor had nurse of color who slept for a good 30mins at her chair in the nurse area. I wanted to take a picture but there was other nurse around her just allowing it and I didn t want it to affect the care of our family member. When she woke up she was very flirtation with my older brother. Which we thought was crazy funny but so out of line. When I shared with my husband that she was sleeping and that occurred he was in disbelief. Then he said his only reply could be was well what could you expect it s NY. Which I said it s not cool that was not an excuse.I feel it was poor management and hiring staff need to really see who the hire. Very sad and out Veterans are treated to so horribly and possibly in there final days. Yes we know they get needy and are sensitive. Hello they are SCARED THEY DONT WANT TO DIE.

If ALL THE VA'S would care for their vets the way this VA does our Vets would finally get the help needed. This facility supersedes any other VA in Texas or Oregon that my family has dealt with. The staff we dealt with here actually care about their vets & their family.

As with all contemporary healthcare in the USA, there are good and there are bad health professionals in the VA. Believe it or not, unless you're going to a super-expensive, for-the-rich hospital, the percentage of good vs. bad health professionals in the New York VA healthcare system is far greater than the civilian sector; while outside "professionals" couldn't solve my many issues, VA doctors have been able to diagnose and effectively address most of my maladies.

Be prepared for frustration and a lack of communication. Especially on weekends or outside the hours of 8-4.

The majority of the admitting doctors we encountered seemed inexperienced, bordering on embarrassing. Maybe because when we came in, we got the weekend shift? Things I would think would be a priority (like an MRI after a CT scan revealed a mass in the brain following a car accident) had to wait a day and a half till Monday. People must work extremely efficiently here. During "normal business hours" staff are frequently just hanging around chatting with each other.

We had two doctors give two plans in less than a half hour apart, like they hadn't even talked. When we asked if there were better VA facilities for the issues that were found, we were told that checking out would mean going to the end of the line and starting the process over again, and that they couldn't tell us anything about what other VA hospitals had to offer. Questions we had for other doctors even within the facility here never seem to get back to us without us asking for a status over and over. By the time somebody gets back with an incomplete answer, the people who actually can answer questions have gone for the day. Communication here has been "utterly horrible".

Maybe my standards are higher because I have a lot of medical professionals in the family, some of whom have come down and made comments. Maybe I expect more because I am, and come from a family full of Vets, that I would expect better than what I have witnessed thus far.

But at least things are free. Guess you get what you pay for. 2-Stars because they got some tests done quickly...and nobody has died.

If there was a 0 start option I'd pick it. Every time I have gone there for a specialty appointment the doctor is late and has multiple patients scheduled for the same time. For example I have a 2pm appointment today and it is 3:09 and my vitals haven't even been taken yet. Atleast 15 have been seen before me already. After this appointment I am going to the supervisors office to let them know their appointment scheduleing system is EXTREMELY ineffective. When I finally do get seen the doctor rushes me out. This specific VA facility is a disaster. The only place I was satisfied with here was the women's clinic since they see their patients on time and give quality care. The rest of this VA hospital needs to get with the program. I am mainly going to castle point VA and they are excellent so I dread having to come to my specialty appointments here in the bronx.

I take my father here several times a month for various medical issues. We never wait more than 15 minutes to see a doctor and have even been seen immediately without an appointment. Furthermore, I have yet to meet any employee in the facility who is not friendly and helpful. The doctors never rush you out in order to see the next patient.

I had two appointments in one day in this hospital and I can tell you I felt like I was walking on the RED CARPET. From my primary care doctor, medical assistant, residents, and the Optometrists I have to say, THANK YOU , for the exceptional work and how I was being attended to with such great care.
