Genuinely shocked this hotel has an average 4.2 rating. After we checked out we had to wait for our taxi about 10 mins - 3 other couples checked out in that time - all with significant and different complaints
THE GOOD
Lobby is striking and smart
Exterior likewise attractive
Location potentially good - from our perspective though, it was too far from Old Nice which is where you want to be for the best that Nice offers. Nonetheless it is right by the metro line straight to the airport (c30mins Jean medecin stop), about 10 min walk from the train station (for exploring Cannes, Antibes, Monaco etc), c15mins from the marina & Old Nice
This was our first trip to Nice and we had some great food (hadn t really known Nice as a foodie scene, but great food at Jan, Oliveira, L Uzine, Le Panier and Citrus) - all 15 mins or so from Boscolo
Staff were polite; we complained finally after 6 nights (of 9 night stay!) and were kindly upgraded - sadly the upgraded room suffered many of the same issues- see below.
THE BAD
General: rooms are tired, basic amenities including WiFi not adequate, room key system poor - on both rooms we stayed in the key worked approx 1 in 15 attempts.
Beds: Fred Flintstone himself would have complained about the bed. I had a nap on the pebble beach one day; it was more comfortable. Pillow was (very) cheap, mattress had springs poking through and was EXTREMELY firm
Room: not keen on a glass shower in the middle of the room with limited privacy, but not the end of the world.
Service: some days room would be cleaned, some days there would be chocolates left, some days none of the above. In a 9 night stay I would expect sheets to be changed or at least to be asked if we would like them changed. We did move after 6 nights, so perhaps they would have been changed but not convinced
Bathroom: [check your privilege] I don t buy single ply toilet roll at home; I don t expect it in a 5 star hotel. Shower smells damp/ musty. Floors stained in shower and bathroom; bathroom sink also discoloured.
There is a gym / spa, though gym not great and not tidy - weights had tissues from previous users on them, scattered all over the place; too hot and low ceiling so I couldn t do overhead exercises. Machines probably older than me... spa pool we used was fine
Roof terrace - basically inaccessible - need to book one of the ?6 beds about a week in advance and I think c25eur each...!! Nowhere else really to sit or chill.
Other: our initial room was on the 5th (highest except roof terrace). The trigger for us requesting a room change was the thumping bass of the roof club until 1am on a Thursday (and to a lesser extent other nights thus far). Highly recommend against accepting a 5th floor room. I suspect the roof terrace is making Marriott less money (in covid times) than the rooms...
CONCLUSION
If the location is suitable for you I would recommend saving a ton of cash and going for one of the local 2-3*, which apart from smart lobby may actually be better. Otherwise head over to Old Nice
