I was not prepared for the wide variety of exotic and beautiful birds this zoo has! It is also deceptively small. I recommend at least four hours to properly see it all. Absolutely worth a visit.

One of my favorite Zoo's. This is a medium size zoo in the middle of mountain brook AL. Admission is $17.00 with Tuesday's bieng half off @ $8.50 :-) . The Birmingham Zoo has a small children's zoo but 2 neat splash pads for kids to cool down. Shaded well with a good variety of animals. The zoo is growing. There is an Asian exhibit coming soon.
My family & I had a great time at the Birmingham Zoo. Everyone had their mask on, plenty of sanitizer stations & everyone was respectful in keeping distance.
Pretty zoo. Lots of animals. Only draw back was they were closing early and this was not advertised on their website. A little disappointing after driving a few hours.
This is written by my nine year old daughter about why she loved the day we spent at the zoo. The $10 wrist band for kids is well worth the price. Zoo keepers were friendly and I loved seeing them give the seal a kiss. There is a dung beetle in the playground. The show with the possium was fun and the African turkey bird came back out. The 100 foot slide was so fun. I also liked the carousel too. The outhouse is full of animals poop.
Theres a lot of construction going on.. once again the train ride was awful. Our conductor didn't say anything the entire ride! Overall my kids enjoyed the animals they got to see from us walking around the zoo. My daughter was so excited! (Shes 2) I didn't like all the menu changes in the cafe.. they took away the bbq nachos and that was one of my reasons for going! Ha! They did enjoy the slide and the sea lion show.
place was reasonably clean and maintained. They don't have as many animals as one might hope, but there's still plenty to see and do. They are undergoing construction for new exhibits and entrances. Eager to see the final result
The Birmingham Zoo has tons of exhibits that allow you to see many different habits in one place. The zoo is always expanding and growing and has many events through the year. It's a must visit see in Birmingham.
We have been members since our first kid was a baby. Always have a good time when we go. Definitely consider the membership....kind of pricey for a one time trio, especially for a larger family.
I remember this zoo being so much more interesting when I was a kid. That was 3 decades ago. Now there are not any large primates and it's been under more construction for at least 3 years now with not much being added. My kids got bored fast and just wanted to leave.
Huge zoo!! A lot of big empty enclosures. It's a beautiful zoo with a little train to ride and over prices little restaurants and stores. I just think they need more animals to see
Relaxing. Interesting. Buy a yearly pass & you can get all kinds of benefits. Think about being a volunteer, also. New projects are underway. Get there early for the shows on weekends. Parking is free.
The Birmingham Zoo is a great place to spend time with the family, go for a walk, and learn about the wonderful animals. The facilities are clean, the staff is friendly, and the surrounding area provides great amenities. There a multiple seasonal events during the year to take advantage of as well!
Love the bham zoo! Went to boo at the zoo last night. There were only two tables set up by local businesses that had candy. You would think they would give out candy when you played games but they didn t. Other than that it was fun!
Plenty of space but where are all the animals? We saw a lion, elephant, giraffe, zebra. and lots of squirrels. Train ride just had a recording of zoo info and no animals to see.
Nice Zoo they are constantly updating environments for the animals. Feeding times for the animals are around 10a and 4p. The animals are more active when it is cooler out. The zoo is also very clean, from inside the cages to outside of the cages, the walkways and the restrooms. The Cafe at the entrance has a good variety of food and snacks. I chose the veggie sub, it was delightful. The only disappointed time we had was at the Red Diamond seal show which is at 10 and 2. About 30 adults and children waited for the 2p show and at 2p two female attendants came out from the wall and threw a couple of fish out to the seals and had one seal wave to the small crowd. The so called show was over in less than 10 minutes. No introduction, or information or anything was said over the PA system. I don't know how they can call that a show. The train ride during Boo at the Zoo was enjoyable viewing the creative animated pirate theme characters.
Birmingham Zoo provides the best for the animals entrusted to its care and is educating our community about caring for our environment. Amazing, world-changing work!
Went with my daughter for her class field trip & it was a great experience. The souvenirs & gift shops were way too pricy but the experience was very worthwhile. It definitely was better than the time we visited the Atlanta Zoo.
I took my wife and 3 kids (10,8,1) to the zoo for spring break. We lucked out because we went on a Tuesday and received half price admission. There was a nice size crowd but the crowd was evenly distributed throughout the zoo, so it didn t seem busy. Ticket purchase went smoothly. I will admit that half price made the trip worth it, but if I had paid full price I probably would have been a bit disappointed. I would certainly recommend the zoo to anyone but would suggest going on a Tuesday and not pay full price. The only major issue, and reason I gave 4 stars and not 5, is parking. They have horrible parking lots and it eventually turns into park wherever you can. People were parked on the grass, double parked, and parked where it blocked some of the exits. They are spending money on redoing the entrance when they should focus on the parking lot.
Very nice small zoo. Prices are a bit steep. Even with the Tuesday discount we spent almost $80 for a family of 4. In addition to the admission we chose to purchase the ride wristbands. Glad we did but it is disappointing the carousel and train aren't included with admission.
Kind of ridiculous that they don't accept cash once you get inside. I also find it ridiculous that the all the water fountains are turned off. Unlikely I'll go again.
Large portion been under construction for a while now and several of the indoor exhibits were empty. The burger joint was closed and we were strarving. Zoo does seem to be manicured nicley and very clean ..just not as exciting as we would have liked. Wished they had a jaguar and gorillas!
Love the Birmingham Zoo! Great Staff, they really love the animals, and the animals look healthy and happy. Never a dull moment visiting the Birmingham Zoo!
Always a great place to visit. My kids love going every time. Very helpful staff, they let me help my special needs son feed the giraffes without a ticket.
Great zoo for little ones! You can get very close to many of the animals. Very walkable zoo. Friendly staff. Rides for little ones. The mornings during the week can get very busy with field trips, but otherwise its usually not too busy. Splash pad for the younger kids. We are members and try to go whenever we can!
Many exhibits are either closed or don t have animals in them. No shows, interactions or educational demos. The gift shop is also not open, just a small stand with a few stuffed animals by the exit. The zoo seemed lifeless and too quiet for a Saturday. I m sure it s COVID related, but I wouldn t go again until COVID restrictions are lifted and the Zoo can fully operate again. Only one restaurant was open and a few refreshment stands. There was only one cashier taking orders at the Wild Burger restaurant so getting food for 2 people took about an hour in total. Restrooms and dining area were very clean and staff cleaned areas often however all hand sanitizer dispensers around the park were empty. Overall nice family day to get out of the house but wasn t worth the money at this time due to limited operations.
Prices are WAY too high and undomesticated animals should not be caged especially for someone else's entertainment. We went for the light show during Christmas and was not impressed
The Birmingham zoo has undergone extensive renovation in recent years and they are still adding new areas. Kids will love the petting zoo with farm animals and the water zone near the cafe. They will also enjoy the train ride around the zoo, feeding giraffes, and camel rides. There is an exhibit of local wildlife along with exotic animals from around the world. Be sure to check the schedule for shows and demonstrations that are a part of their education program. If you live near by, consider getting a family membership so that you can spend more time at each exhibit.
The animals seem to need more space. Not getting the conservation part from the zoo. To me it looks like all they want is to make money. I do not recommend this place.
Beautiful, however a bit pricey if you have a large family. Food and drinks extremely over priced. Takes away from what could be a great family experience. . ( advice bring your own snacks ) Half price Tuesday still cost 23.00 for 3 people excluding any rides.
A great place to spend a few hours. Take your time and view all the exhibits. The staff and volunteers were friendly. Not too expensive. Worth your time, and a local favorite.
