Tempe's gem! This isn't a huge water park but it is a great place to take you back in time. I love coming here with my family every weekend during the summer, it has become our #1 hang out place. Big surf is like a 70's time capsule, the vibe is chill and everyone who works here is super nice as well. There is a small area for non swimmers, a good size area for older kids just learning to swim, and tons of slides. My absolute favorite is the wave pool, they have boogie board and surf sessions every day the park is open. You can rent rafts, boogie board and surf boards.

Awesome day, Joe Shannon turned the day for my two boys. A couple of kids tried to steal my kids boogey boards. We caught them and Joe went out of his way to make it right for our family. Dont need to explain the details of what he did... but he was awesome.

After getting injured and having to go to the hospital the office staff acted like it was a problem to give me free tickets for me and my ride to the office bad attitudes and weird acting staff. But overall the park is pretty fun and an okay place to swim and enjoy the summer

Here is the problem, they close at 6. In tge middle of summer, on a saturday. They have a 250lb. weight limit for the majority of the slides, and they close down the wave pool at 5 in order to accommodate the "professional" surfers. We are in arizona. Who on earth needs to surf in arizona?

I understand that the park is 50 years old, and that is a huge milestone, but when everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, from furniture, rides, concessions. I mean even the general upkeep is beyond outdated it's hard to stomach shelling out the dollars they charge. I was lucky enough to pay $19 through groupon, but when I went, 4 of the slides werent even operational due to obvious structure problems. Sunsplash although more expensive is at least much better maintained and has far more and better attractions. Having fond memories of Big surf as a child makes me sad to see the place in such disarray.

Reasonably priced, awesome wave pool, multiple water slides whether you want to go on a tube or not. Kid friendly areas. And free parking. Definitely a nice respite from a hot Phoenix summer day.

Wicked fun place! Pretty cool setup with lots of lockers and many places to find for seating. All of the slides & wave pool are a blast! Small family trips or big groups are always welcome.
One drawback, the crazy cost of food! I suppose it goes with the territory but next trip will have packed food in tow.

Good

It's dated for sure but it was still a ton of fun!!! Spent the day in the wave pool but there are some very fun slides that I did also. Some people say the water is too warm, swim to the deeper end for cooler water. Extras can be pretty expensive so just take your "need to haves" and lock up your valuables in the trunk as lockers are $7-$10 per day (all day). If you've a family and need a place to put your stuff it would be worth it I suppose. Didn't buy any extras but rafts for the wave pool are $7. Totally worth it. If you're not going rent a raft you're wasting your time and money. The slides have their own tubes. They have lots of palapas for shade. If you can't find one in the front, there are plenty near the slides (makes it a little more private as well). It's been 40 years since I was there the last time but I still had a blast. Oh, look for coupons at Costco or other places. 55+ only $15. Have fun!!!

On the smaller side which makes it easier to track my kids. Plenty for Toddlers, teens and adults to do. We buy the season pass each summer and find it's a good way to stay cool and wear the kids out. Bathrooms are always pretty gross and the food is way overpriced, but my kids love coming!

Not the beach but still fun: I recently bought a season pass to spend my summer at Big Surf in Tempe. I have been there several times . I actually have been going to Big Surf on and off since it opened and spent quite a bit of time there in the 70s 80s and 90s. It is sad that this place has tried to compete with the big slide water parks. They are taking up so much of the room with the slides that it doesn t seem beachy anymore. Gone is the sand, replaced by grass and cement. I do like the shade structures and lawn chairs; however, I wish they would let us supply own own seating. You are extremely limited on what you can actually bring in the park. No food, pool toys, drinks, or umbrellas... many people bring their food, leave it in their car, come out and sit out front in the little bit of grass that is there and have their lunch. They should put picnic tables out there for those people. The food inside is like most places, not too great, very basic choices, and overpriced. The one thing I really do commend them on is the cost for entry. You can get a yearly pass or a one day pass on Groupon for a very affordable price. A lot less price than you will pay at any of the other water parks. It does get pretty crowded and the wave pool becomes a mosh pit in the afternoon. Get there early and leave when it gets too crowded.

Outdated but it doesn't matter. My kids every time have such a blast! They are 12, 11 and 9. Wave pool is always a hit and they love the slides too. I personally wouldn't spend $35 each for tickets.. Then we would never go but I seem to Win a 4 pack each year. I don't think food is overpriced. Pretzel or nachos for $3 slice of pizza and a drink for $6 after tax. They have shaved iced for $4. I'll keep going back as long as I win tickets ;)

This place is old and seems more for geared toward younger children. There were only about 6 water slides for older kids and adults. We still had a nice time with the family. But we had 2 nephews visiting us - one age 11 and one age 18. There aren't any "thrill rides" for the 18 year old. We got a good deal on Groupon for all of us. I'm glad we didn't pay full price. They both enjoyed the wave pool and spent most of their time there.

It's old and needs a good paint job BUT totally worth the money! We had a blast with our 3 year old! He rode the slides, went in the eave pool and shot the water guns. It was a great family day.

My family went on opening weekend and we had a great time. It wasn't too busy which was great. Live that there are 2 bathrooms, lots of food choices and locker rentals. There are 2 areas for kids, one is for small kids, which is great.
