Best Western Southgate Motel Review

Stayed at this motel for 2 nights. The room was very clean, modern and well appointed. The wifi was easy to use and very fast. Should we need to stay in Mt Gambier again this will be our first option. Staff were friendly and responsive. Highly Recommended

Comfy sleep, will be good when the renervations are completed.

Bedroom was nice.Dining room not open Sunday necessitating a long walk to a pub.Trip too short for a taxi. No problem except for when it is dark and raining. Ask for a room with a new bathroom. The old bath/showers are disgusting. I couldn't bring myself to shower in it.

It's okay. Our room needed some work. It was dusty cleaners are not great. One of the better places to stay in Mt gambier. Manager was helpful when we had an issue with our room. Gave us a new room..

Well, the hotel is old, but BUT the bed is sooooo comfortable, wifi is really fast, water is really hot and strong. Will come back again!

Great service. Very comfy beds. Newly renovated and modern rooms including great shower and bathroom. We didn't try the restaurant but bacon smelt great as we left early in the morning.

The room/hotel was not as expected. We went downstairs to a man (the owner) who when asked for a refund pointed fingers to all but himself, and then denied this.
Confronted him about his customer service after he refused a negotiation through the booking provider, so he says he will call the police if we don't leave, and swore at us as we were leaving.
Then proceeds to still charge us for the trip.
The higher chain management could do nothing to help. The booking provider attempted to soothe the situation but the owner stopped taking her phone calls, and they had no power.
My advise is to book over the phone, without providing a credit card (or preferably don't book at all)

Clean and tidy motel. Good facilities. Good food in the restaurant.

we had a newly renovated room and it is very well done. Ate in the restaurant as well and food was some of the best we had on this trip.

Pretty shabby establishment. Needs a total refurb. Had a cricket behind the couch driving us mad. Had to have 4 keys renewed to get in and then still wouldn't activate the hotel room door. No one was there .. maybe 2 other guests. Would not recommend.

Clean rooms, reasonable pricing and comfortable beds. Water pupes were noisy in the morning when neighbours were showering but minor inconvenience.

Worst place I have ever stayed. The staff were extremely rude and unhelpful, the state of the room was disgusting and the facilities listed on Wotif are to be taken with a grain of salt. Some of them aren't available, at all.

Room ok, breakfast is served / 2 plates, then the next 2, etc. / patience asked!
If you like scrambled eggs and a slice of ham on moist toast, this is the place for you

David, the Hotelier, went above and beyond to help us book a place in Adelaide for 3 nights. The rooms at the Southgate were clean, spacious and the shower was great. Strongly recommend staying here! Price very affordable.

Resent refurbishment very nicely done very comfortable and a good price.

Myself and my partner had our wedding there last year, and we were very glad we booked there.

The staff were very obliging about some of the last minutes changes we had (last minute changes to RSVPs).

They seem to have a great working relationship with It's a Celebration who we hired to do our decor.
Both businesses were lovely to work with and made sure things were taken care of and didn't get left alone as 'someone else's responsibility'.

They offered a free room for the night for the bride and groom. (We were impressed with our room. Lots of space! And a spa bath!).

We were able to fit 120 guests there and had enough room to dance for a first waltz (if we'd had a live band or guests had been keen to dance as well, we would perhaps have struggled, but it ended up being good for us).

Their new sound system and projector was really straight forward to plug into and use. Everyone could see and hear what we wanted to show at the wedding. No crackles or anything. Only issue was to do with our family members who weren't always keen to hold the mic close enough to their mouths for the speeches. :-p

We also found it was relatively easy for our camera-man to take footage - plenty of power-points to plug into for power.

Southgate were able to help accommodate for myself and a handful of other guests who had gluten-free dietary requirements.

The alternating meals menu option that we selected we felt was good value and worked well. No-one complained that they missed out or that they couldn't eat their meals.

Also felt that the kids menu options were very good - kept the kids happy. Some of the older kids who were given an adults meal said they would have preferred the kids meal, so it must have been good. :)

Having chosen the alternating menu option where numbers of meals were already known ahead of time meant that meals were served in a very timely fashion.

I really liked the soups and the meals that we selected - they tasted great.

My mother-in-law was disappointed about dessert though. She had invested a lot of time and effort into the cakes, and had wanted to make sure our guests had an ample serving of dessert. She felt the portions that they served were far too small. She was happy though that South-gate themselves procured the whipped cream and strawberries for us that we wanted included with our cake for dessert on the side.

Oh, and they also offered the bride and groom a free breakfast for the morning after as well, which was lovely.

We're glad that we had our wedding reception at Best Western Southgate Motel and are very pleased with the level of service they gave.

2 nights. Meals are excellent. Rooms are modern and clean.
Cutlery maybe? Not a knife, fork or plate in the room.

We phoned to let them know we were arriving later and were given a beautiful upgrade to an apartment. This would be ideal for a group or family travelling together and great for those with home away from home.

Clean Hotel! good for few night stay , open area for BBQ was perfect.

Everyone was nice, but had issues with the keycards in the cold not working

Needs microwave. Kogan tv pretty average. Clean but ageing. Room good size and comfortable.

Staff were lovely considering this property was under renovation all went well. My room needed some updates but I would say that will happen with all the rooms eventually getting done. Nice place to stay

Nice place, we got in late and the staff left us access and instructions on how to get in. There are too many trucks going past through the night, they shook the room and were a bit too loud but the rest of tbe room was spacious and enjoyable. The spa worked well and the shower had very strong water pressure.

Awesome reception staff, great beds and those showers were amazing! Close to city and easy access around.

Hosted a conference here and have mixed reactions about it. On the day we arrived and were ready to setup our event we were met by 1 particular staff member that was not helpful. We asked for tables yet none were setup on arrival. Once they were setup asking for table cloths seemed a difficult task. And then the tea coffee area was grotty. TV stand was horribly dusty. Every request we had was met with a sigh, dont appreciate this at all. After letting other staff know of our displeasure apparantly the owners have been informed. The price and location was fine and this would have been a 5 star review if not for one rotten egg. Suggest moving that staff member to another position that is not front line customer service!

The motel has a hotel feel and look about it. We arrived late at night and found it nice and quite. The front desk attendant was very helpful. We were able to park right near the front entrance which is great when one has a small sleepy child. The beds were comfortable and all the appliances worked. The bathroom had a couple of cosmetic issues in the bath shower section and on a electrical plug, but nothing too bad. The water pressure was fine and shower stayed at the desired temperature. We all had a lovely night sleep. Check out was a breeze.

A little noisy with the adjoined room. Showers weren't great because of the fully booked status and high water usage. I don't feel like the word "Delux" that was applied to this room in the advertising of it was accurate in my experience, but overall not a bad experience. Management were response to feedback so that's very good.

The room we had was old and dirty. The curtains had dozens of holes in them, the accessory power point was broken in the bathroom and there was dirty hand marks on the walls accompanied by an off smell.

The staff were helpful enough to find us another room that was at least clean but the rooms are far too outdated for their price tag and in much need of their upcoming renovation.

Rooms were clean and the location was good pretty central to the town only downside was not enough towels for our room

Extremely polite, very helpful staff. Can't do enough to help out. My room is clean, beds are nice and facilities available are well maintained. I'm vegetarian and the restaurant went out of their way to make an absolutely delicious vegetarian pasta. I've stayed here before and they have catered for my every need. It doesn't look like much from the outside but once you're inside; the place is great.

The newly refurbish rooms are brilliant. I stay here most weeks for business. The rooms are quiet and the beds super comfy. Restaurant has a great variety and staff are amazing.

This motel is quite dated, and is in the process of being renovated (as of December 2018). That being said, the rooms are large, as are the bathrooms - the deep bath in particular was a lovely surprise. There is also a nice courtyard area with a pool and barbecue facilities. It''s an easy five minute walk down the road to Woolworths, which is helpful, or a 15 minute walk into the centre of town.

Unexpected surprise, didn't even book and the room was just what we needed after a long drive.

Everything is clean. There are some refurbished rooms but still a bit dated. The reverse cycle aircon we had was load and slow to heat up. Over all it's about 3.5. Definately not the worst around. Would have love to been able to use the pool area but being the middle of winter it was a tad cold.

I recently stayed there for the generations in jazz festival. While it was a lovely place to stay I was disgusted to find out I was paying $100 more a night because the festival was on. I do appreciate that as a business it is an opportunity to make some more money but i felt this was excessive. It wasn t even a public holiday so it can t be said there were higher costs than normal, it was quite simply pure greed. I lived in Mount Gambier for 3 years and I think the festival was a great occasion for the city so it s so sad to see those owners take advantage to the point that it excludes the opportunity for people who otherwise would love to go to this can t because of the greed of local business owners who are quite obviously trying to take advantage of it. So disappointed as hotel is lovely.

Stayed in Federal hotel and the rooms were below average, changed hotels to Best Western and it was the best decision i made. Such great rooms, love the spa and the space the hotel rooms have. Great food also.

We had booked 25 rooms for one night stay and when we had problems with our key to our room at midnight management was very rude when they were called in and said "I am not in the mood for this tonight" although it took us over half hour to find an after hours number to call. The number displayed all over the front foyer only diverted to front reception. Lovely hotel lovely rooms but very disappointing service from the Manager!!

Just completed 14 days of iso here. I would absolutely stay here again. Staff were friendly, the food was great, the room is very good with a five star bathroom and above all it is nice and quiet. I slept like a log every night. 5 stars, highly recommend.

Very accommodating! The newly refurbished room was absolutely amazing with these fancy new light systems that were scintillating! Made for a beautiful night away.

A bit run down in the rooms and facilities but the staff were very friendly and the restaurant was quite good.

Great but a bit expensive but you get more eg Sauna my wife has never been in one plus pool bigger TV plus choice of DVDs.clean and modern.

Good and clean place with a pool. The design is a bit dated but it is more than enough for nights rest.

Overall it was a pleasant experience. The hotel was close to shops and a few minutes drive to popular tourist areas. Sadly the sauna was out of order during our stay.

They're doing renos but I think they chose the wrong builders.

It is a hotel in the process of renovating rooms, be careful not to get the old ones, it has happened to us and without problem they have changed us to one of the new ones and nothing to see !! Super spacious, huge bed although the mattress was very soft for our liking, large sink too. It has free parking and nearby you have a Woolworth supermarket and gas stations. If you go through Mount Gambier don't forget to visit Blue Lake and Umpherston Sinkhole. Well located 10min walk to the center.

Thought it was a bit pricey for this time of the year and even though we were in a refurbished room hot water in shower was sparce

Pleasant experience after walking in off the street.
Reasonably priced, large updated room and bathroom. Air conditioner was a welcome comfort in the hot summer weather.
Lovely pool area and sauna but ran out of time to use it.
Quiet position, close to the CBD and other sights around town.
We ll certainly be back to visit again.
