Got two kitties from here and it was a great experience overall. They take care of the animals first and ensure they're going to a good home. If you ever want to adopt, do it here and support a good cause.

They would rather have you bring your dog and leave it in the car then let you adopt. I was told they have to do a meet with your current dog however they will not hold the dog you want. I live in Tooele which means I would have to leave my dog in the car or lose the dog if they adopt it out while I'm gone. This is a good item to have on your website if it is indeed a rule. I have never seen anyone willing to break a child's heart due to the joking nature of her parents. I have never been so upset in my life. We went and looked at a puppy and my daughter fell in love. They bonded and did very well together. I had made a joke and they called me on it. I explained that it was a joke and they said that the dog was too nervous with us. The dog jumped in my daughters lap and stayed there. They said the dog kept trying to get away, this was a lie. My daughter was heartbroken. I will never go back there as they would have preferred to put us with an animal that was a danger to my little ones. Absolutely ridiculous. They don't care about the families, only the animals and when working with animals you have to find the right fit, which is the call of the family. I volunteered with the humane society as well as best friends and absolutely adore my animals. I made a joke about my daughter only wanting a small dog so she could torment it. I simply meant that my daughter wanted a dog she could hold. They took me seriously. With all my volunteer work and my love for animals this was ridiculous. I will NEVER go back there. I felt like a criminal. Of there are dogs that should not to to homes with children, don't let someone with kids look at it and then break the children's heart.
It's okay. Some cats are in very tight quarters as well as the dogs. I know they are different in that they don't recommend spay or declaw for cats and they also don't terminate animals. The staff are present but usually on their phones and didn't help answer a lot of my questions
I adopted my kitten Jiji 4 weeks ago (at 8 weeks old), not through Best Friends, but through someone else. I was thrilled to find out that Best Friends would provide low cost spay, vaccinations, and microchip even though I didn't get Jiji from their program. They can be tough to get on the phone 100% of the time, but I've always been emailed back in a timely manner. Thanks Best Friends for all you do to support the animals in our community!
Great place to find you new forever pet. Just got my new best friend today. They work with diffent shelters to get pets their new forever homes. The staff are very friendly and kind to both the pets and adopters.
A great quality organization. They are a great place to adopt a pet, find out about how to fix your pet or borrow a trap to fix feral cats. I love this organization. They really care.
After researching every shelter in Salt Lake county, plus all the reviews on Best Friends, I can confidently say that I will be choosing them for the adoption of my new kitty this week. Also I have to say, most of the negative reviews came from people not asking the right questions, doing the research, or just plain having wrong information. This is a small shelter, they do not take new animals, and they are constantly on their feet caring for the animals they have at that time, so don t be surprised if there isn t someone waiting for your every call. Email is usually a better form of communication for note keeping anyways people. If you aren t ready to give an animal a forever home, no matter what, then don t adopt. If you have small children, don t leave them alone/super close with any animals, not just for the child s safety, but the animal s as well, if you can t understand that, don t adopt. If an animals is anything less than family, DON T ADOPT.
Best Friends is an amazing organization! They treat their animals with care and are VERY clean and organized. They have a kitten room, an adult cat room and the dogs have little rooms they are in. You can volunteer here and help make collars, take dogs on walks, answer phones, etc. it has plenty of parking and is located in a very good spot in Sugarhouse. The staff is very kind and helpful here too. If you want to adopt a pet, please come here!
Spent weeks trying to find a place to help a community cat in our neighborhood get neutered, and finally came across BF. Called several times, left my name, number, and email with every message and still did not hear back from them. I drove for over an hour to get to the address online only to find out their clinic is in Orem and by appointment only. Would have been nice to know that before I wasted nearly 3 hours of my time driving around. Maybe if they answered the phone, or at least checked their voicemail, this could have been avoided. Unfortunately, I do not have the time or money to cart this cat around, and he can't stay at my house, so he has to go back outside. I'm sure they do what they can to help cats, but I can't help but be upset over this whole situation.
There were no available parking stalls by the entrance, so I drove around the side. Don't waste your time looking for nearby places to park, unless you are handicapped. Every stall was reserved, each with a tow-away sign. Also there is a sign with a number to call if your vehicle is towed away. I finally found a stall a half-mile away, it seamed, in the very back of the very long building, with Best Friends Animal Society painted on the ground. When I got back to my car the manager was there, and said she was wondering who belonged to my car. She said that they also have cars towed away, but I assured her that I was visiting Best Friends Animal Society, so she said that I was OK to be there. The Humane Society is a much better experience.
We got our kitten there about 18 months ago. She came spayed, microchipped and up to date on shots. She was also only $50 which is basically nothing considering all they did for her medically and the food and care they gave her while she was there. I have also borrowed a trap to TNR a feral cat that lives in my backyard. The trap loan was free and they even gave me a voucher to cover the cost of the sterilization (which would have been around $200 without).
The people complaining on here need to realize that the people working here are volunteers, and doing the best they can. Be patient, be kind, and remember that you're there to save a life, not to judge customer service and parking. I love Best Friends and all they do for animals, keep up the amazing work. We CAN save them all :)
Wonderful group that are doing much needed, good work. Saving our companion animals from getting euthanized is a never ending job. And an often thankless job. But this group does it with such a good attitude. Thank you so much. And thank you to the people that donate and volunteer. Kudos.
My partner and I had a great experience here. We adopted a cat who is now loving her new home. She had some after care because she had a small infection, but the adoption team and veterinary staff were accommodating and thorough throughout the entire process.
It is impossible to ever get help or information via the phone. It was absurd trying to get through their phone tree with NO humans answering or helping over a period of 6 weeks of trying. We were trying to help with a feral colony of cats this winter by doing a TNR and received zero help from Best Friends - even though they present publicly that saving cats is one of their big efforts. We were completely on our own trying to help a large feral group and had to borrow traps from other sources and paid out of pocket to get the cats neutered.
This place is amazing the people here really are all about helping animals in fact they are currently running a free adoption program! They are amazing and even help support less well funded animal shelters
The people there are very friendly and will do everything they can to help low income people and any and all strays they can. If they can't help, they can definitely point you in the right direction.
We just adopted 2 kittens from here and are also new to Utah. We really enjoyed our experience and it appeared all the animals are loved and highly cared for. The adoption price was also very reasonable. Would recommend!
I was expecting a bigger collection of animals to see, but after talking with one of the staff members and learning how they do their adoption process it makes more sense. This is more of a "satellite" location, and they get their animals from shelters, rather being like a central shelter location itself. Nothing wrong with that, just not what I'd expected. The place was spotless! I loved the cat rooms that you could go and play with them before you pick them out. The staff was super nice too and are good to help you interact with a pet before taking it home to make sure it's a good fit. Would definitely recommend as a place to pick out a pet. :)
This place is amazing. They have a lifetime commitment to their animals. The adoption was very informative. You can go there to enjoy the animals time whenever they're open as well. I love the values of this animal adoption agency.
This place was great, especially considering what they have available as far as location goes. They are in Salt Lake Proper, so no yard space. Their animals are clean and cared for. The associates and volunteers there care about the animals and finding a good home for them. I would recommend here if you are looking to help a dog. But if you want a specific species or personality, this is not the best place. It is small and does not have a lot of dogs at a time, only around 10 or 12.
Excellent and knowledgeable staff. Animals were very well cared for. Vets were on hand to update all pet vaccinations and spay/neutering. Pet room made the adoption process very personable.
I am writing on behalf of our whole family. Thank you so much Best Friends!! Our experience adopting with another organization was horrible but Jessica P made this experience amazing. It wasn t just adopting it was making sure it was a match made in heaven. If you re thinking about adopting go see Jessica she knows what she is doing, she is so kind, understanding and very patient. Thanks to Jessica our family is complete.
Came here to potentially adopt a cat. It was the middle of a week day and was relatively empty. A man at the welcome desk barely looked at me and failed to acknowledge that I had entered the building. After meeting with several adorable cats I came out of the "cat room" and asked the man at the desk about their personalities to find a cat that would be best for me. He waved me off and didn't seem to have any knowledge of the cats that they housed. I then realized that he wasn't paying attention to me because he was watching football on the welcome center computer. This was all extremely annoying, but the worst was when I found out that this man was the adoptions Manager- Lawrence. I can not believe that a manager cared so little about his job, and finding homes for these cats. Pathetic!
OMG I love this place they have tons of animes to adopt you can even see the dogs I was inpressed I could even play with the cats and if you wanted to adopt they take you to a room and interact with a cat to see if you were sure about that friend you would take home
Our May 26-27th, 2018 visit was amazing! We toured the Sanctuary and volunteered to work with the dogs for 2 half days. This was our grandson's 13th birthday vacation (his choice). The staff were welcoming, friendly and committed to the Best Friends cause...caring for and saving animals. We were impressed with the cleanliness of the entire property. It's well organized, efficient and professional. The dogs have a wonderful place to call home while they await adoption, they are loved and well cared for. I will continue to support this organization. I hope you will too.
Best Friends is a great place to find a pet, no matter what the breed. Some breeds may not be available for long periods of time
In response the woman who is worried about 'dangerous breeds' being adopted out, I believe you could use some education on dog breeding, but more importantly, training. In the 70' and 80's it was Doberman Pinschers that were being maligned. Why? because they are a protective breed and were being trained in great numbers as attack and guard dogs. Now it is Pit Bulls. If a dog is treated with respect to it's natural instincts then most dogs are well behaved Cockers are not usually great with small kids, parents leave the dog with the toddler who pulls their hair, ears, and tail, then blame the dog for biting the child when other warnings are ignored. Pull my hair and ears and I will smack out at you.. instincts are in all of us, especially animals.
An owner that does not know the breed of their dog, (and let's face it, they don't call some of them Heinz 57 for nothing!) or what traits, levels of protectiveness, or how to manage a dog with those traits, is an irresponsible owner. A dog not socialized with animals or other humans, may or may not be a good choice for you. Some are intimidated by the environment and may shine when out of it, or have some bad habits not noted there. They do try. And some shelters, esp. BEST FRIENDS, provide extra training for those dogs. Anyone providing a home to a dog has a huge responsibility, not to be taken lightly. Don't leave everything up to the dog!
Personally, I would rather have a pit bull than a yappy, nippy Chihuahua. Shelters of any sort have a responsibility to make sure a dog is checked for bad traits.as much as possibe. Some may not like cats, or other dogs of different sizes, some are very protective of food or toys, or may be protective of their owner. Some behaviors are difficult to determine in a shelter environment however. That is why there are return policies if you find the animal is not a good fit. What looks like a cute cuddly snuggler, may be totally different when not intimidated by the environment.
My biggest point is that dogs will usually act fine unless mistreated or are mistrustful of the person approaching them . Fear is sensed and reacted on. If you come across a dog you don't know, how you approach it can be seen as friendly or aggressive. Behavior is a 2 way street and dogs get the blame for bad people behavior more times than not.
So have fun while looking for a four legged friend, but match your personality and live-style to what the breed and animal is capable of.
I adopted a cat from here. They made it a very easy process and they were very friendly. It was clean and the animals looked cared for. Definitely recommend this place for pet adoption.
This was the best animal experience I ve ever had! The service was above and beyond my expectations, all of the animals were being attended to often. The center was very clean.. I love that they are a no kill center and a lifetime to change my mind if I can t take care of my animal for any reason..
I loved that there were two rooms full of kitties.. if I ever need fur baby love I ll just stop by there.. Thank you for my new companion
Best Friends has always been known for all the good work they do for the animals. The staff is amazing. I just adopted an amazing pitbull. The meet and greet with the dogs went exceptionally well. Better than I could have hoped.
A lovely, wonderful organization. It's obvious that animal welfare is an absolute top priority here, and it shows in the kindness of the volunteers and the happiness of the animals. My partner and I adopted our first cat together here, and it was evident she was very well cared for and loved before she joined our family. The cat rooms are very pleasant and well lit, and the dogs are happy and walked often. A great place to meet a new friend!
After seeing another post that was not as dangerous but deceptive I should have done this 1 1/2 years ago but beware if the staff says we don't know their history this dog is a stray. This happened to us. We met a dog I had my 2 adult children and 2 grandchildren with me. We asked where she came from and the lady told us that she was a stray and that she wasn't in the system, well that was a lie we found out later she was in the system she attacked an officer during a swat raid. She was trying to protect her owner. (Which is expected, dogs are loyal. However this dog had PTSD from that incident and she was scared of anyone at a front door. Of course we found this out later). The police from the shelter even recognized the dog and found her in the system with no problem. Well the result after having this dog after 2 weeks she attacked 2 old ladies at our front door and now we are getting sued. Later when we talked to the animal shelter that had to put her down. They said they talked to Best Friend Society and they lied again and said no we informed them of the police officer bite. NO THEY DIDN'T MY WHOLE FAMILY WERE WITNESSES If that were true, not only would we not have chose her. It would have been in her history on the forms we had to sign. We have 2 grandchildren living with us. Shame on them and please beware! Maybe we need to hold them accountable now and have them pay for the ladys injuries instead of us. They didn't own up to their lies. That shows what kind of characters they have as employees and as a company. There is so much more to the story. Message me if you want to know more. Just be careful!!!!!
Very clean and I am impressed with the dedication of each volunteer/employee I spoke with. How much these people care for the animals in there care. MUCH RESPECT
This is a non-profit organization that that does amazing work to help people who find themselves in bad situations, and do not want their family members (pets) to go without. They take donations, and give out anything needed for your furry friends. From food to vitamins even toys.
Came in today at 6pm looking for a dog with my girlfriend. We weren't greeted when walked in and we were the only people in there looking at dogs while a few prople were looking at cats. After looking around for 5 min by ourselves we were told to "move along" because one of the dogs we were looking at was barking at us. Instead of saying hi what brings you in today or at least explaining the situation she just walked away while another co-worker just nodded. Cute dogs but awful staff.
Best place to adopt an animal. If you need to return a pet for whatever reason they will take them back and re adopt the pet. No animals are put down at this location.
