Gorgeous structure with multiple levels, it is truly worth seeing if you are in the DC area. There are churches on two levels that provide lovely services. There are 2 gift shops on the lower level as well as a small cafeteria. You can spend the day here and not be disappointed or bored.

This basilica is the heart of Catholicism in the United States under the patronage of our Lady in her title of Immaculate Conception (meaning she was conceived protected from all stain of original sin and the graces of her Son, our Savior Christ Jesus coming redemption on the Cross were poured forth on her first, beforehand and most abundantly of all human persons as she was to bear the God Man as the New Ark of the Covenant, fashioned to be a pure tabernacle for Divinity enfleshed. The basilica has many side chapels both on the main level and in the crypt dedicated to our lady s various titles from around the world. You should come here and plan to spend hours here. Once you visit the first time, your heart may keep calling you back. I ve even enjoyed Easter Vigil Mass here, the high point of our Liturgical year. It was heavenly and I have video here on Google Maps of the exquisite, sacred and moving experience! May God Bless You!!!

You could spend days here and still not see everything this Basilica has to offer. The mosaics are stunning, and each Chapel invites you to contemplate Mary and her Divine Son in new and equally powerful ways. I've been here for large (March for Life Vigil) and small (daily) Masses. You really get to see the universality of the Catholic Church here, so many different groups of people. A must see. If you like religious goods, they have the best gift shops (yes - two).

A superb example of Byzantine and Romanesque Revival architecture. It's easy to get lost in the immensity of it all. Finding a quiet corner in which to pray and meditate is easy due to the 70 different chapels to the Blessed Virgin Mary you can visit while at the Basilica. For Christian, Jew, Muslim and Gentile alike this is a place well worth visiting to foster intercultural and religious exchange.

This is a unique place. Get on the train or bus and pay a visit to the biggest Catholic Church in US. It's definitely different from what I have seen in Europe. It's a modern symbol of a very old institution.

Although there are several beautiful Catholic Churches in our neighborhood, we attend mass at the Basilica every week to include during the week. We just have a spiritual connection with the Basilicia. It is beautiful to pray with people from all over the world. I truly believe faith can heal the suffering. I was in such of a state of despair when we started to go back to church and I felt somehow the walls of this church became my sanctuary where I could mourn. I honestly felt that Mary, the Mother of Jesus, would whisper to me to tell me it was okay to cry and I felt the masses guided me on how to move forward. I am no longer in a state of despair and I am very optimistic about the future again. I am filled with happiness again. I am a stronger person for my son. If you are in the area, please make this a place to visit no matter what religion.

The basilica shows the glory of architecture to honor God in the spaces both large and small throughout the building. The small intimate chapels span the world in devotion to Mary, the mother of Christ, with many countries represented. The large church above is on a gigantic scale with mosaics, art and stained glass commemorating the saints and apostles.

About Basilica of the National Shrine

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is a magnificent Roman Catholic Church located in Washington, D.C. It is considered to be the largest church in North America and one of the ten largest churches in the world. The Basilica is dedicated to Mary, who is venerated by Catholics as the Mother of God.

The history of this beautiful church dates back to 1913 when it was first proposed by Bishop Thomas Shahan. The construction began in 1920 and continued for over 60 years until its completion in 1990. The Basilica has been designed with a combination of Byzantine and Romanesque architectural styles, which gives it a unique appearance.

One of the most striking features of this church is its massive dome that rises up to 329 feet above ground level. It is adorned with beautiful mosaics that depict scenes from both Old and New Testaments, as well as images from Catholic tradition.

Inside, visitors can find numerous chapels dedicated to various saints and religious figures such as St. Joseph, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. John Paul II, Our Lady of Guadalupe among others; each chapel has its own unique design and artwork.

The Great Upper Church houses many impressive works including an enormous mosaic depicting Christ Pantocrator (Ruler over All) surrounded by angels; it also contains several side altars dedicated to different saints such as Saint Patrick or Saint Francis Xavier.

In addition to being a place for worship and prayer for Catholics worldwide, The Basilica also serves as an important cultural center hosting concerts featuring renowned musicians from around the world throughout the year; these events are open not only for Catholics but also for people from all walks-of-life who appreciate music or art.

Visitors can take guided tours through this magnificent building where they will learn about its history while admiring its stunning architecture and artwork; there are also audio guides available if you prefer self-guided tours at your own pace.

If you're planning on visiting Washington D.C., make sure you add The Basilica on your list! This awe-inspiring structure will leave you breathless with its beauty while providing an opportunity for spiritual reflection amidst all that hustle-bustle city life offers!
