On paper this gym seems like it would be terrific, and it is, provided you are younger than 13 or older than 60. I cannot say enough about the majority of the staff as they are some of the best I've come across when it comes to customer service and friendliness. I am a member going on my second year and have stayed because driving to Medford is too inconvenient.

If you are looking for a gym where you can exercise without interruption and enjoy the facilities then this is not the place for you. The weight room is packed during normal hours and the basketball court or pool are reserved for outside groups on many weekends. There is also an inordinate number of very inexperienced lifters due to the fact that the Y caters to the aforementioned age groups above all else, which can lead to some headaches when people do not understand gym etiquette. If you do choose this gym and weightlifting is your primary goal, you should start lifting before 9am or between 12-3.

If you want to get laps in on the pool or play pick-up basketball then this is not the gym for you. The pool is a toilet for the hundreds of small children that play in it daily and during the months of January through March you can forget about getting any significant playing time on the courts. The summers are the only time you will be able to count on the courts being open and unfortunately there will be very few decent players around during that time period.

I use this gym when visiting. Staff are very helpful, place is very clean, there are plenty of machines, and every machine seems to be in excellent condition. Moreover, the members do not make guest feel unwelcome. Cost for a day pass is inexpensive. I wish my club in California was this nice.

Terrible parking. The customer service from majority of the staff is lacking. It has a snobby, money oriented feel to the whole place. Most obviously caters to a particular, older member base has no time or enough competent staff for the services they offer

Nice facility and a friendly staff. It seems clean and well maintained (especially for the amount of traffic each day). I've heard complaints about parking, but they have 3 different lots (that I know of) and I can always find a spot. I usually go in the evening after work and it's never too crowded. There is a nice sauna in the "dry" locker room.

I mostly love the Y, but I took one star off because of the pool. The "wet" locker room is a zoo, and they make it sound like the pool is chlorine free, but it is not. They use some kind of saline extraction (forgive me if my chemistry is off) but the end result is still chlorine. It wrecks my skin, hair and eyes, so I just don't swim there anymore.

Huge facility with great staff, especially during this pandemic. Lots of options for different machines and lots of space to socially distant yourself from others. Worth the very small investment to join

This Y is upscale and very clean and friendly. The classes are varied meeting the interests of many, and also promotes a sense of community. The salt-water pool is like heaven to me! Clean and soothing. I feel so fortunate to live in this town where I can experience this wonderful facility often!

I became a member of the Ashland YMCA in June 2020 mostly so my teenage boy could use the basketball court. When we went in to play I was approached aggressively by one of the employees that we could not play basketball together even though we live in the same household.

I felt racially profiled and targeted because my son is African American. They did not inform me of this rule and I put a pause on my membership because of all of the limitations and feeling that we were not welcomed there.

We had great experiences with the Athletic Director Tony with flag football in the past as he was very supportive and helped me with coaching the team, but when you live somewhere that racially profiles your son I can not support a business like that. I am boycotting the Ashland YMCA and I would like a refund on my membership fees.

I have been a loyal patron of the Y for seven years, not because I prefer to be there, but because it's the only somewhat affordable gym/childcare facility in Ashland. During this time, I have been spoken down to by staff, my daughter has been assaulted by another child and was then told that it "didn't actually happen," and my daughter has had racist remarks directed at her by staff. The front desk staff has a high turnover and they always hire people with poor communication skills who speak down to customers as well. They hired a lifeguard who flirted with 10-year-old girls at the pool and didn't do anything about it until I complained. I have spoken to upper-level management during each of these events, and nothing has gotten better. I wrote a YELP review with no response. To put the icing on the cake, I was prevented from seeing my child due to a "new security rule" (who separates parents from their kids?) and nobody apologized for their mistake. This is one of the only negative reviews I've ever had to write and it makes me sad that I have to disclose this place for what it really is. I hope things change, but I'm tired of waiting for it to happen.

Ok, where do I start? Compete staff members do not come close to what you originally have in mind. Looking for people under 60 that take care of themselves? Not at this YMCA. Their 'salt water' pool is a sham and you'll be lucky if you can catch a few laps in the morning. The parking isn't sufficient. The machines are better wiped down BEFORE and after, as some members just forget with age. The best thing about this YMCA? That's simple, it's Jane. She focuses on form of any age and actually gets you to where you need to be, either professionally or personally. I also find the sauna of high quality and way better than Jackson Wellsprings.

I am a member and I called to ask if there were plans for a deep cleaning (they rarely clean the place as it is!) and they said No, only cleaning the children's area! Yet the children, those spreaders of disease and infection, go into the adult area! ?
Go figure..
Highly Irresponsible of management not to put the staff to work cleaning that place!

Billing issues: I received help from DHS to pay for 2 of my children's summer camps. Shirley, who is in the billing department, wrote me an email letting me know that I have a balance of $337 for the summer camps, saying that the state will only pay for the days in which the children were at camp, with no breakdown of the charges. The following day, Shirley wrote me an email letting me know that the charges were even higher, to the sum of $440 +, with no breakdown of the bill. I let the YMCA know that there were 3 occurrences in which I went to pick up my children & they hadn't had them checked as attending for the day & perhaps there are more than the 3 I caught. Upon contacting the state, I learned that DHS does indeed cover up to 5 absent days per child/month & that YMCA receives a discounted rate when the state pays, hence they would make more $ off of billing me. I left a message with Shirley's boss last week, & as of 3 business days later, heard nothing back.

YMCA facility operations

YMCA facility operations
There are many nice things about this facility and all the workout equipment that is available.

I feel there are problems with staff allocations in the user areas where there is the equipment.
There never seems to be a member of the staff around to answer questions - Like proper use of an unfamiliar piece of equipment. I spent most of the other morning trying to figure out how to use a couple of machines that were new to me. But with no staff around, it was virtually impossible to have a productive workout - resulting in a waste of time for me.

It appears that there are plenty of staff in the administration branch at all times. This seems a bit unfair to us, the members and users. I see this as a feeling of not caring about the customer that much. Yes, we do get cleaning towels and spray bottles and the equipment is usually in good running condition.

With the large number of users it would be nice to be able to find help from staff . An example this morning of my frustration was that no one was around to help me. I went to the check-in desk and expressed my issue. He tried to help and informed me that a staff person would be in at 9:00 am. This does not help those that arrive early- 5-7 am.

My advice to you all at the Y: The customer should come first and be kept happy. I do not feel this is the case at present. Perhaps we are on administration overload and ignoring the need for staff on the floor This is my observation over the years.

I would ask the Board to examine the proper need and use of staff. Remembering that our Y is big business these days.

Thank you.

An amazing resource for the community. The Ashland YMCA has plenty of excellent work out equiptment, an entire room for wheight lifting, basketball court, gymnastics room, large indoor swimming pool and hot tub, loads of yoga, pilates, Zumba, hitt, etc classes and even a sauna in the locker room. And people with OHP get a drastically discounted rate. Awesome gym!

Love the Y, very good machines and awesome staff. But the pool water is horrible, even with googles on... leaves my skin very very dry and my hair feels like a broom. Other than this, the YMCA is awesome

The people who work there are friendly and attentive. The equipment is largely in good shape. The hours are good, especially for a small town. A saline pool is a big plus. Downside is lack of trainers. I rarely see a trainer working with someone, but that is how one sees real, safe improvement. I would like more fitness people who can answer questions and monitor gym use.
