Worst experienced and treatment ever.

Worst experienced and treatment ever.
I brought my 19.5 y/o Cocker Spaniel after a seizure episode at night. I was greeted by a young Veterinarian doctor. She did not show any sign of sympathy or empathy for my distress or my dog situation. Very calculated she said: "this is most likely due to a brain tumor and at her age there is nothing to do, better to put her down". She only thought of one possible diagnosis to make her insensitive recommendation.
These are not the words you expect to hear from a doctor at front. I asked her to treat her seizure and she agreed. She gave her Keppra and in about an hour brought me my dog in a state of stupor for me to bring her home. I asked her if she could give me something to give her at home in case she had another seizure and she told me no. Then, I suggested that it would be wiser to keep my dog over night for observation and treatment if she could have another seizure. She agreed. Next morning I was told to come after 9:30 due to rounds. I arrived around 10 am. At this time I was greeted by the day time doctor. She was not very familiar with the case but she did not take long to recommend the same. "Put her down". I called our veterinary and she asked if any test has been done on my dog. No blood work has been ordered to rule out other reason for the seizure. She did not have any other seizure that night but she was loaded with Phenobarbital which made her more dazed, almost unresponsive. We asked if the neurologist could examiner and gives us choices for treatment. The doctor agreed and she says she was going to ask for an evaluation by the neurologist. At 3pm the neurologist exam my dog and came to talk to me. Very austere and rudely she said: "what do you want".
I am a medical doctor, and in my 25 years of my carrier I have never spoken to any of my patients in this way. I said I would like to know what can we do to treat my dog. She said, she is gone, she is completely senile and comatose and there is nothing to do except to put her down, and I will not released her until you have arrange the euthanasia. I was devastated. I called hospice services to scheduled the euthanasia for that evening at 7pm. My dog was released to me, very dazed and almost limp. I got home at 4pm, placed her in a comfortable area and waited for 7 pm. By 5pm, she walked up, walked on her own to the water bowl, drank water, I took her to the kitchen and put food on her plate and she ate it all. It has been 6 weeks since this incidents and my dog is still with me, walking, eating and no seizure actives. As a medical doctor I decided to treated myself for seizure and I discussed this with her regular veterinary whom agreed. Unfortunately, this is the only emergency animal center near my house. But I think that this organization should give sensitivity training to their medical staff.

I would recommend AERA wholeheartedly to anyone that is having an emergency with their pet. My one dog had been going to the cardiologist there for three years. (Dr. Peddle and currently Dr. Ozer) They really and truly go above and beyond for pets and their owners. My little guy has had heart issues and they did absolutely everything that they could. Being a pet parent we must have called numerous times and never once were they annoyed or irritated but instead showed an immense amount of compassion. The receptionists and vet techs were attentive and extremely caring as well. Dr. Ozer was very thorough and accessible whenever we had any questions. Dr. Scelba was the emergency doctor and was able to give us clear indications of how my dog was doing and never pushed us in one direction or another. She was extremely empathetic and made us feel as comfortable as we could with the situation at hand. If your pet is in need of emergency medical care, AERA is a spotless place and offers the best pet care.

Crooks! 1840.00 dollars to X-ray, iv catheter, urine catheter, pain medication, five hour stay. We were told they can t save our dog. They suggested euthanizing. We picked up our dog same day and had our vet euthanize him at home with our family, not watching through a glass window while the dog is all alone like Aera wanted to do. I spoke with billing manager and I was told we agreed to the price. Of course, he was hit by a truck, I would have paid anything to save him and was prepared to pay 10k for surgery. When they said surgery was not a option, the crooks already had our 1800, imagine preying on people in their time of need. I told them I would be willing to pay 900 for service rendered and that would cover the costs of service rendered. They credited 100 dollars. Well I m stopping payment! They can take me to court! Stay away!

My dog came here for an emergency procedure. I was happy with the communication with the doctor. However, I'm not sure how they operate but I had two major issues. One was the fact that staff were coming out in the same outfits and plastic over shoes without changing in between coming out. Second, be prepared to pay up before you take your pet. I don't do estimates and no business should believe a customer is okay with that. I like exact pricing and want to know what is the process from the get go. Any typical business runs like that, so that's two issues I hope are rectified should I ever need to return. Thank you for taking care of my pet.

This place is wonderful! We brought our puppy here that had two broken elbows. Yes, expensive, but worth every penny due to the quality care they give! We didn't think our puppy would ever be able to walk the same again. Dr Hunt was AMAZING and made our baby as good as new! ! Him and his staff were so caring and took care of him like he was their own!

Not a good experience. After being worked up at Animal Emergency, my dog was still very sick. I took her to my vet when they opened that afternoon, and she was diagnosed and treated for a severe case of Kennel Cough. Animal Emergency was unable to make that diagnosis and charged $800 for a useless workup.

I definitely do NOT reccomend this place. I rushed here because I thought it was closer but wish I had gone somewhere else. I went there because my 4 year old dog started having seizures out of nowhere. After 12 in a row (yes 12 seizures) they wanted to charge me close to $2000 knowing my dog didn't even have a chance at full recovery and no gaurantee it would even make it through the night. My children and I were hysterically crying and the staff was cruel and only cared about money. Rushing out of the house I wasn't thinking about money, so did not have my check book, and in one breath the woman in charge of payment said " if I don't pay it within 3 months they won't even contact me ..it goes to collections and sorry about your loss" wow.. really? Way to be caring that my 4 year old is having an untimely death!
They charged me 200$ more then other emergency vet clinics cost I later found out. Save yourself the aggravation and finances and find a different emergency vet.

I appreciate the fact they are open 24 hours since my dog died during the night when no other organizations were open. I would love them more if they added a transportation service. But I love that they took care of the details regarding the end-of-life process for my beloved dog.

I brought my dog in and there was a huge lack of communication. I had to call multiple times to even speak to the vet. Every time I called I was told the vet will call you back and never did. It wasn t until I waited on hold that I was able to speak to the vet and she rushed me off the phone. I understand they are busy but the lack of empathy and professionalism is very disappointing. They seemed very unorganized and didn t hold true to anything. I was never given a diagnosis and felt like they took advantage of the situation. It was very expensive for my dog to not get a diagnosis and to not be in the comfort of his own home. I wish my vet was open at the time to avoid this awful situation. If you care for your pet do not bring him/her here!

Not happy- I called if they can see my dog and they told me they had a long wait and to go to another facility. Fraustrating and looking down older reviews another customer recommended. Oradell Animal Hospital-desperately looking for a vet to be open on a sunday. I called ahead and was pleased with front desk staff they did not turn my fur baby away. They welcomed him and its in paramus but totally worth the drive. Everyone was soo compassionate and doctor was awesome. Animal referral was not welcoming and turned away since his dog bite wasnt severe and he had two broken ribs and lacerations how is that not severe. Smh not happy

Dr. Levine and Debra her assistant are both so nice and helpful. We had our first appointment this morning and it went very well. They were organized, on time and Dr. Levine spent almost an hour sitting on the floor analyzing my pet and offering suggestions to help my pet with her anxiety. Then Debra came in to help go over the treatment packages. I cannot speak on the progress as we haven t started anything suggested yet but in terms of the appointment, organization, and knowledge we highly recommend Dr. Levine. We look forward to work with their office again soon.

Today, one of my kittens was crushed by a scratching post while playing with his sister. Took him here and they immediately put him in the hands of a vet. The wait time was long, but worth it. He was diagnosed with head trauma. We were told the neurologist wasn t in yet, and that they would have to keep him in overnight. Got charged $1600-2200. We haven t paid the full bill yet, as we left before the neurologist came. But we did get to see my little baby looking okay before we left. I ve taken one star off because of the wait and how expensive it is.

Other than that, I d totally recommend this hospital.

We brought are dog to see Dr. Rice for a dental consultation regarding are 13 month Mini Pin. Dr.Rice took the time and explained to us are best options, and was upfront about the cost for them. We went with having them extracted since they were not doing her any good in the way they were positioned. It certainly was expensive well over $3,000.00, But she did receive good care and the surgery went well. Some areas of opportunity for the hospital, Dr. Rice called when she was first placed under anesthesia and again after the sugary. It would have been nice to get a follow up phone call to see how she is doing, as well, as the follow up appointment is not for several weeks. We will be taking her to are regular Vet in a week, just to have peace of mind, until the follow up appointment.

This place was great!! Very efficient with thorough vets and always satisfied with my dogs care. People just say bad things because it s expensive and it s not fair to give a bad rating for cost. If your pet is worth it to you stop your belly aching. Medical care is expensive all around. So cough it up!!

My eldest chihuahua has been struggling; she is 15. When we needed an emergency vet, they were the best option for us. We arrived very late and they still helped her. She did need to spend the night for treatment and tests. Their prices for an ER vet were well within the norm. BTW, my girl is home and resting. She is back to stealing my pillows and sheets.

OMG... I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place and maybe it's because I had visited another vet THAT DIDN'T FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH when my dog Sophie was accidentally cut during a grooming appointment at the big Pet chain store :-( Dr. Scelba (sp?) was soooooo nice. She was loving on my little furry girl but so personalble, positive and most of all I like that she did a thorough exam and then gave me two options. That was powerful when she said "Here's how we would treat this" and then when I asked about alternative she gave "second intention" ... Then when I asked the question "what would you do if it were your dog" she gave me a direct response (not a scripted safe response) not like others who would say "It's up to you" ... so I love this place if ever I had an issue BUT I WON'T HAVE ANOTHER I will drive the 30 minutes from Newark for them to take care of my little furry baby.

I don t give anything 5 stars, and this time it was well deserved. This place was great! They took my cat in right away. It was busy, it s definitely a good place to care for your animals. I recommend them. Dr. Berenstein was awesome and so gentle, she explained everything in detail thank you again!!

Just a little note for the less happy individuals.
Everyone will always have their different opinions on things like this. However, if you go in to ANY place with an attitude your going to expect one back. Be polite people and show respect. It s not easy doing what they do...there will always be a charge for walking in or having an appointment. Same goes for human Dr visits. Get Pet insurance, it may be a little cheaper if you are unsatisfied...

Our pit bull Zelda had an accident. I ll spare the reader the gory details, but it was very traumatic. My wife and son rushed her to Animal Emergency & Referral Associates and she was immediately surrounded by caring vet techs and skilled veterinarians. A surgeon was on call and did a very remarkable job in light of how Zelda presented. We were completely thrilled that her life was saved. I give Dr. Brophy and his team my thanks and highest praise.

Horrible experience!!! Misdiagnosed my cat and charged an arm and a leg to do so. If I could give no stars I would. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. I explained that I believed my cat swallowed something that he could not pass. I already had X-rays but my vet was closed and recommended that I go to an emergency care facility. They looked at the X-ray and did an examination. Without any blood work or anything else they wanted to charge me over $1200 for one night of an iv and "observation". By the way, it's $213 to walk in the door. The vet told me that she believed it could be pancreatitis. Gave my baby fluids. $89. At my vet fluids $20. Don't really know why she pulled that one out but told me to stop the medication from my vet. Well thank goodness I didn't listen bc that medicine helped my baby pass what he had swallowed. NEVER EVER AGAIN!!! Save you pet and your money and don't go here!!!!

My beagle had vomiting, loss of appetite (to anything!), and complete lethargy (he was a zombie) so I brought him to an Emergency Hospital who determined that he would need surgery. They referred me to Animal Emergency and Referral Associates and my dog was cared for under Dr. Hunt. First off, the receptionists are...mediocre. Some of them are extremely nice and others...clearly are they because they need a job, not because they care. The anesthesiologist and surgical technicians are VERY NICE. Any time I called to get an update on my dog (twice a day) or if I had questions, they would always be friendly to me. If I came to visit, they would check on me and my dog once in a while and make me feel better. My dog needed a gallbladder removal and Dr. Hunt drew up a estimate for me. I don't care where you go, animal surgery or anything concerning a pet's health is EXPENSIVE!!! Vets don't make enough money (average is 70,000-80,000 a year) so I wish people would stop acting like they are being robbed. If your pet is sick, be ready for an expensive bill and figure out if you can or can't do it. It is unfortunate, but it's life. Dr. Hunt was extremely thorough in his explanation to us and told us exactly what was going to happen and what the risks were. We were given time to think about it and we did the surgery. Dr. Hunt called us immediately after the surgery with an update, as well as every morning for an update (unless I beat him to it). He is a brilliant veterinarian surgeon, not only on paper, but also in bedside manner. My dog is alive because of him and his team and I am thankful. I will definitely recommend Dr. Hunt to any pet owner who needs surgery for their pet.

Rushed our 17 week old puppy here when he suddenly couldn't walk and was in intense pain. He was quickly diagnosed and treated. After a week in the hospital,he is happily back home with us. A big thank you to Dr Coogan for a quick diagnosis and to Dr Johnson for taking such good care of our Sulla. We wouldn't go anywhere else for an emergency but to Fairfield Animal Emergency and Referral. Thank you for giving us our boy back !!!

We were sent to Dr. Levine the behavior Doctor by one of my dogs vets because of the behavior issues of our puppy. He was only 6 months old and had some issues that the vet thought would only get worse if not taken care of when he was young. Having dogs our whole lives we never had a pup like this one so it was difficult to deal with his issues and needed help or so we thought at the time. We drove an hour up to this hospital to see Dr. Levine. Well this was some experience. Her assistant came into the room and spoke to us the Dr. popped in spoke to us for a few minutes, and was actually afraid of this puppy, he had a big mouth and barked a lot but at the time he was actually playing with the toys in the box she had in the room. The Dr. made no personal contact with the dog. Then suddenly she got up left the room never spoke to us again and never came back. We looked at each other and thought it was kind of odd. Her assistant came back in the room told us they needed to take blood tests and then put him on Clomicalm. Okay we agreed. We left with his medication which they charged us over a hundred dollars for which actually costs $34. The bill that day was around $400. Then we made another appointment but had to come back before that because they lost his blood tests. We returned after he was on the Clomicalm and assumed we would get some behavior modification tips but no we did not because that is another charge beyond the office visit which we paid for an got a $34 prescription for $400.. The same routine the assistant talks to you the Doctor comes in the room takes notes walks out says nothing does nothing and this time it was another $400. So after $800 we had a prescription for Clomicalm which actually costs $34. I tried calling and got the assistant who explained if we wanted anything from the Doctor it would cost more money. I complained that we already paid so much and received nothing but a $34 bottle of over priced pills. The Doctor actually had the nerve to call my Vet and tell him we didn't want to pay her and she deserved to be paid for every word she spoke. Well needless to say we never went back. My vet was renewing the clomicalm but after a few months and no results we decided we no longer wanted a drugged up dog. As he came off the medication we began to notice his head was clearing and we found books that had training tips that actually worked. He is a wonderful 3 year old Dog now with a clear head, no drugs, just hard work and discipline by him and us. We learned a big lesson here and the vet who recommended this Doctor no longer does, he was actually astonished when we told him what went on.

Although there to see the cardiologist the most compassionate, informative and calming veterinarian was Dr. Glauber. Unfortunately he doesn t have his 48 year old office anymore but fortunately if you need to go to this hospital he s there.
On the other hand, Dr. Ozer was cold, obnoxious and obviously pretending she cares about your dog. Some of her comments which aren t worth my energy left me feeling she should stay in the X-ray room and avoid people interaction.

Took my dog to a check due to possible toxic exposure to oils i was told that he needed to stay over night, I called to pick him up and the Md informed me that my dog has a slight limp due to his back leg, nothing big xrays done free of charge, follow up with vet in 3-5 days. My issue is that, he went in for one thing, came home with another issue, when questioned what could have happen to him, we were told, to take him to his primary vet he may need surgery.

I can't believe there are negative reviews for AERA. I have been bringing animals here for at least 20 years - they have never been anything but kind and helpful. Sure, it's not cheap, but they have people caring for your pets overnight. Most vets do not. So that is worth extra money in MY book. To me it's all about my animals. Most recently I brought my cat here because on a Friday night he suddenly couldn't eat and was drooling - turned out he had some kind of ulceration under the tongue. They kept him over the weekend, and did a biopsy on Monday when the surgeon was available. In the meantime they put him on prednisone and he was much improved by the time I picked him up. I don't remember the price, I'm sure it wasn't cheap. But then the doctor that had done the biopsy (Dr. Kelly Johnson) had me bring him in for FREE follow-up care as she monitored the improvement in the ulceration. He was on prednisone for about two months and she did all those follow-up checkups for free. In the end my cat was cured (we never did know what caused it, as it wasn't cancer - but it resolved with the prednisone), and with all the free visits, to me, this was a good bargain! I also can't say enough about the specialists they have there - our previous dog had the TPLO surgery to repair an ACL tear by Dr. Hunt, Dr. Singer and others removed mast cell tumors from our dog, Diva. Dr. Alsarraf, the oncologist, is a wonderful, compassionate person. She couldn't help us with our old dog because her cancer had spread so rapidly, but she did keep a friend's cat alive for 4 years with chemotherapy when he had lymphoma. I have nothing but good things to say about this entire practice.

Our Dog Dante was referred to this place by our vet as he was suffering from sudden liver/kidney failure, he spent about 10 days at AERA where they preformed many test and aggressively treated his condition, Dr Strauss was a true professional and our dog made a full recovery, I waited a few months to post this review, AERA is a very good place with top notch doctors and state of the art equip, the only downfall is that they are very expensive, in our case the treatment was very expensive but it was worth it in the end as our dog did in fact make a full recovery.

Guess I just got the wrong doctor. My cat had a ct scan and an x-ray done. Not a single diagnosis was made from any of these tests but they were sure to charge in full for it. Now he can't walk. If you truly love your Pet never go here!! Back in December my dog was having issues because she needed because her period was still going after a week. She was vomiting and she was weak, I was concerned and took her to the emergercy hospital. Dr. Michali Berenstein jumped into that we needed to euthanasia her because she was suffering and she had some crazy septic abdomen!. She was rushing for a decision to take her put her down and I told her I needed to speak to my family about this. She said that even if she goes thru a surgery she wont make it. We told her we will take her to Oradell for a second opinion. These two hospital were trying to charge $10-$15K for the surgery. The people are Oradell were as bad as this hospital they just went with what the doctor from Animal Emergency said. We didnt want to believe in this nonsense so we told them we need her discharge. Scheduled an appointment to fairfield animal hospital THE BEST HOSPITAL I EVER BEEN!. They did blood test on my dog and saved her life but these two incompetent places wanted to rush and put her down without giving her any hope. The surgery at Fairfield animal hospital costed $1500 with everything while we spent over 3k on these stupid EMERGENCY HOSPITAL!! NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR PET! Avoid these hospitals.

Good vet and decent medical care for your pet (the top priority), which is why this outfit earned 1 stars vs. zero. TERRIBLE customer service coupled with very high rates. Our cat was in for less than 48 hours - no surgery - a blood test, X-ray, IV with fluids and antibiotics. The cost was well over $2000. They instructed me in a very firm manner, to call at a certain time to obtain information after my pet was examined, and then the vet was never available. I would leave a message and wait several hours before calling back due to no response. This happened on two consecutive days. I wanted to come in and pick my pet up in the morning, but he was held hostage. They told me I must call after 9:30 am to talk to someone before he could be released. OK, not a problem, I understood the protocol, but of course, I couldn't talk to anyone when I called and no one could tell me when this might occur. At 3 pm I finally drove to the facility to get my cat. Had I not done this, I expect he would have stayed another night and the final bill would have been close to $3000. After I checked him out, I didn't even receive a courtesy follow up call to see how he was doing or anything along these lines. I received a couple of follow up calls from our family vet (Denville Animal Hospital) who referred us to this facility and who understands the importance of reasonable customer service. We are not difficult people who expect over-the-top service. This place was definitely sub-par. The poor quality of service is shocking. I have never made a negative post on fb about a company before, but this place deserves it and customers should be forewarned. It makes you wonder about how well cared for your pet really is behind closed doors. If they can't handle the human side of the business, are they really handling the pet side all that well? I don't know. Clearly they need more staff to deliver the a reasonable quality of care and that most customers would expect, especially when paying top dollar. I don't blame the staff for this. The administration/management is the problem here. This place appears to be the only clinic of their type in the immediate area, so they can essentially do as the please because there's no/little local competition. A bad philosophy, and no way to run a business, healthcare or otherwise.

My dog just tore his ACL, and if he doesn't improve in a few weeks the vets at Oradell said he will need surgery. My personal vet recommended Dr Hunt, who has done many surgeries for my vets patients, and said he is an excellent surgeon. I'm sure they can not be any more expensive than Oradell. Based on reviews, though, I don't know where to go!

SCAMMERS OR INCOMPETENT, take your pick. $1,000 bill to diagnose constipation! Needed to run many different expensive diagnostic tests. Could not possibly use the test results from AMC in Manhattan that were done 2 weeks prior as a routine checkup, how else could they make money!
I befriended a vet who worked here who flatly admitted that this was all a money making scheme, based on people's willingness to do or pay anything to make their animals well. Instead of helping these customers, Animal Emergency exploits this sentiment of their customers.
Just because the staff made you "feel comfortable"by calling you the animals 'Mom or Dad"and uses baby talk to the animals doesn't mean they are good.
Please carefully consider coming here or to any vet that operates like a dealership service department. They are unethical and seek only to take advantage of emotionally vulnerable people. Also, please read the reviews, many echo my experience and many who gave 5 stars, gave no review, obvious fake reviewers.

Horrible!!!! My dog ate medicine and I take him here and what do they do? LEAVE THE MEDICINE IN HIS CAGE!!! And he ate it again!!! And my dog is so jumpy and traumatized I don t know what they did to him but definitely something traumatizing. And when they put his IV his paw got swollen so they had to shave his other 3 paws! They did an awful job at taking care of my dog I will never come back here ever again. And if you love your dog you shouldn t come here! The staff are so irresponsible.

Great care and treatment. However be prepared to pay just as if you were going to the EMG. I ended up having to pay $1377.00 9 hour stay. Being disabled my income is less than that a month IDK how I'm going to pay for this. They did take care of him though but I can't afford coming here unfortunately

This hospital is crazy expensive (my most recent visit cost me $1,100), but they are very professional and welcoming and nice there. The vet and assistant I saw today were both really sweet to my cat, and took great pains to make him (and me) feel comfortable while they did their examinations.

They are not miracle workers. Some sick animals can not be saved, alas, but in those cases, they've always given me the straight truth, but in a gentle and understanding way. I liked how they offered me different treatment options so that I could judge what was best for my pet and my family.

Mind you, I absolutely could not afford to go to these guys regularly, and I love our current vet and wouldn't make the switch, but it's so good to know that no matter what day your pet is sick, no matter what time he is sick, you can get him in the car and rush over to this place and get immediate care. I've gone in on Sundays, holidays, and at crazy hours in the morning on various occasions. They're always open and they're always ready to help.

I'd give these guys 5 stars if they weren't so expensive, but I understand that it costs a lot to keep an emergency room fully-staffed 24/7/365.
