This was the best dino skeleton collection I have ever seen. The museum is a huge place, it would take days to see everything. Food court downstairs is worth checking out too. Overall an overwhelming experience. Admission fee was voluntary, I paid the recommended $20 or 25, it was a while back. A truly unique museum. Guggenheim's is also right across Central Park, both places are a must-see.

Go every day, you still won't be able to learn everything, but you'll have a great time trying. I've been here literally hundreds of times since 1970, it's the best museum in NY hands down.

Probably the greatest museum in the world - you could spend days here and not be properly done with the place. The planetarium is probably one of the best I've seen and the paleontology exhibits are simply breathtaking

Get their app, seriously. I felt kind of lost and bored til I found that. If you can, take the stairs. They have tiny elevators and you'll wait forever. Staff were helpful, though understandably bored. Oh, and be aware that planetarium exhibitions are usually only 30 minutes.

While we originally decided to go because of the movie, we ended up spending the whole day there. Very interesting, broad range of content and very interesting and impressive presentation.

Great science and natural history museum. Amazing dinosaur fossils on display. Most of the special exhibits are well done. The planetarium has interesting exhibits and shows worth seeing. You can't come close to seeing it all in one day

Yes, this is a museum with fantastic exhibits which we loved and could have spent much longer in.

However we did resent the waste of precious time having to join a long queue for a ticket despite the advertised "free" entry. This is not a free museum and the suggested "donations" were very high in our opinion, especially for students and seniors. We did feel guilt-tripped about the payment but stood our ground to pay less as we had limited time.

My husband and I went to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. the week before, so I was comparing my experience here with the Smithsonian. I was really disappointed! The displays looked like they were put together in the 70s and then hadn't been touched or maintained since then. The place just smells old and parts of it have carpet that is disgusting. Many of the rooms just don't have a good flow, so it's pretty chaotic. Apparently the fee is just a suggestion since we never had our tickets checked, but I'm glad we paid because this museum needs the money.

The museum itself is outstanding, there is so much content, it'll take an entire day just to go through the permanent parts. The IMAX film alone was amazing.
But there are also a few things that will get in the way: the building is clearly understaffed, so employees are not always friendly. And the cafe is a real rip-off. No really, even in a museum, no one should ask $10 for an awfully dry and cold turkey and cheese sandwich.
So show up with a full stomach and you'll have an amazing time!

The dinosaurs are, of course, magnificent. And the special exhibits are absolutely worth it. Such a delight.

1 star to balance out misleading score (it deserves 2 stars maybe)
Mostly artificial, boring displays... Definitely most overrated museum I've ever visited. If you don't have much time in NYC just skip it, you will miss nothing.
Maybe 3 stars for planetarium. Thankfully you can get a discount when buying a ticket, if you just ask.

The museum exhibits were great some of the staff however was a bit disappointing. I purchased passes online and paid extra in order to access to all of the special exhibits. When I arrived at admissions the girl was putting times with the special exhibits she started putting times up until 5pm and I said no wait we are not going to be here at that time, it was only 11:30 am. She assured me not to worry about the times that When ever I arrived at the special exhibits they would allow me entry as long as I had the ticket showing I paid for it. Well when I arrived at the Butterfly Conservatory at 3pm the girl refused to let us in and when I told her that the girl at the counter told me the times did not matter she said well that's only when it's not busy now it is busy so you can only come at 5
I told her we were leaving and this was the last thing we wanted to do but she did not care it was only me and my 10 year old nephew so it's not like we were a large group. They need to get there staff on the same page! Either the people at the front desk need to allow guests the time to pick their time for their exhibit or the people at the exhibit need to allow people in to see what they paid for!

Slightly puerile approach to teaching about design with a hackneyed display of how to get a project off the ground. It's basically a community brainstorm. With little pencils, cue cards and stickers. One for the kids. And....does a museum need quite so many security guards tutting at you?

Updated sections help show how evolution of museums has occurred culturally. It is more than big enough to satisfy everyone, although too big for one day to my mind. Kids will find it wordy with a lack of interaction but enough cool More

Amazing!

Amazing!
Simply put, you have to visit this place if you come to NYC.
I've been in several museums around the world, but this honestly takes the cake! The dino wing and exhibit for extinct creatures were fantastic!
Loved it. Seriously loved it.
6 hours wasn't even enough to see it all.
I'd go back absolutely no questions asked <3

This was my main reason of travelling to New York and it left me disappointed. I was one of many that after the movie "Night at the museum" I was tempted to go see this place and it was nothing like the movie at all.

1. Does not really offer any Egyptian related exhibit
2. There are a lot of exhibits dedicated to animals and not as much focused on people
3. Countless areas had their entire lighting turned off making it impossible to see them
4. The museum map provided was poorly designed and ended up wasting time than saving it to find POIs
5. Many Asian/middle eastern artifacts that were from various eras were just labelled as the Islamic world which begs the question if anyone ever checks whoever is in charge of organizing the exhibits
6. There was absolutely no flow between exhibits making it hard to track down specific things that may be of some interest
7. It claims to have a space related exhibits but it's just pictures ( I can just see pictures on the internet! )

The ticket staff had a very bad attitude. We tried to think that how much we should pay because we supposed to stay only one hour, but she said "how much you pay?" with intimidation. About inside of this museum, on the 4th floor, there are dinosaurs' exhibition. They were great and beautiful. But the 1st floor, the floor was very dirty with cardboard. I could not understand why there was so dirty, and they spent their money for what. I did not want to come again.

Very poor experience. I like museums and this one was a huge let down. All of the displays were old, covered in dust and look like they were plucked from the 70's. There were no signs telling you where the bathrooms were, where the food court was, what floor you were on etc. Paint peeling off the walls. Water fountains not working. I really wanted to look at everything but I lost interest. The foodcourt was ok. Seriously overpriced so i wouldnt bother. And not a single bottle of water in sight to purchase.
Coming from the forgotten side of Australia we have a better musuem here in Perth.
Central park is across the road. Walk around that for a day for free.

This is big big, outstanding museum which have everything you imagine, more that we have seen in tv, movies. 81 street subway station under the museum. This museum is so big and detail that if you try to see everything fast, it will take more than one day. If you want to enjoy everything details, it will take minimum one week. This place is like a huge library where we find lot of knowledge and fulfillment of curiosity. American museum of natural history is an American Icon like Manhattan, Microsoft, Facebook, NY subway, hollywood etc etc. This is a must visit place.

When I lived in CT my dad worked in NY so we would take trips to the museum. They were AMAZING, there were things for me to do and we could explore all the exhibits. My dad would explain everything I didn't understand. Just glancing at even only ONE exhibit can change your point of view on the way you see life.

U could pay as you wish, me n two others girls went in before 11am, ends up till 17:45 when they close we still not finished it!!!

Gorgeous! This word is sufficient to express the importance of this museum. This museum shows you the civilizations from all over the world, the wild life, etc. and everybody MUST visit and spend at least one day in there.

The lightning is very poor inside the displays and the red lettering can not be read. Too many lights were burned out. The flow of traffic should be designated, going through a display the wrong way is irritating.
We did not enjoy our time there.

Very interesting museum with tons to see. I really enjoyed the dinosaur exhibits, which contained real fossils of a variety of dino species. Very easy to get to, with the subway stop downstairs. Great place to spend a day.

I been visiting this place since 1999 - it hasn't changed much (and that's great, brings back awesome memories) is a pleasure to bring and invite to explore friends and family. I brought my 5 year old daughter for the very first time and she loved it. One thing I don't like is that is always very crowded. Can't use the elevators because they are always full of people that should be using the stairs instead of the elevators (elevators are more for people with strollers and with little kids and babies - not for your lazy butt). Still, there is so much to see and yet always, so little time. I know that even though I have visited many times, I know there are things I must have missed. That's how big this Museum is.

I usually bring my daughter here on weekends. There is so much to cover that it's impossible to see and explore everything in a single day. We learn about animals and match the sound of alphabet with sounds of animals. She loves the children science lab too.

A MUST SEE for anyone that is geuninely fascinated by cultures from around the world. So many exhibits from so many categories, the space exhibits were my favorite, and I'd love to return to see it again as I went before closing hours and didn't have enough time to read what I'd have liked. Bring your kids, they'll love the dinosaur exhibits!!

Lovely

Clearly the museum has had better times. The diorames are amazing but dusty and lacking light and maintenance. Some places where ao dark I had to use the cellphone light to see the objects. Employees (except for a cleaning guy!) were uninformed and lazy. The only places that were very well illuminated were the shops! Also, without the app you are permanently lost, a total mess.

I absolutely adore this place. Years ago I saw the big blue whale in a Spider-Man comic. Spider-Man was fighting someone in that room. I always said I would come see the whale some day. Also, the staff is very friendly, helpful, and they answered all my questions with a smile. I will be coming back again and again.

The food area is nice but the food is terrible, the chicken wasn t cooked fully either. The staff was nice but wasn t really helpful and it is very poorly ran. The museum is very cool but is not what you expect, I was definitely disappointed by it

I have recently started getting more into art. The Museum is hands down the best of the 10 or so comparable art museums I have been to. Per usual, you should check what they have on display prior to going to make sure it aligns with your interests, but nonetheless it is a fantastic way to spend a handful of hours

Museum was okay...but the customer service, not so good. Was lost a few times and asked people working there for a little help and to my surprise they were often RUDE. They need to work on customer service and try to be friendly. We were 1st time visitors in NYC. Sadly, many places we visited had Rude employees.

We've always enjoyed the museum however on our 4th trip here, the flaws we're starting to show.

Should have better defined pathways through the major exhibits especially the dinosaur exhibit. Both times we went through, we realized that we started at what could be the end of the exhibit.

Maps are useless as it's hard to figure out where you are. Perhaps better signage or a mapping system could fix this.

Onsite food is an absolute rip you off gouge of visitors.

Lighting on some of the displays was broken or not working.

Flaws aside lots of fun stuff to see.

Very interesting, tons and tons of cool displays. The last hour the museum is open, it's free, and that was super cool. Sadly I didn't get to go in the Mummies display because you have to buy tickets. If I'm ever in New York City again and around the museum, I would be sure to get s ticket for that

A Must visit for anyone visiting New York! An awesome museum. Go for the complete experience with a visit to the planetarium. Depending on your pace and plans- should take upto 5 hours to get the complete experience.

The building is great, but the exhibits are mostly outdated mock ups made in the 1980s and reflecting the cliches of that era. You can learn more about this stuff from wikipedia than by going to this museum.

Amazing museum. They have a suggested donation but they accept whatever you can pay so don't feel like you can't go if you can't afford a lot. If you can afford the donation please give to help keep the museum running. If not still give this place a visit especially if you have children. Ours had a great time. If they've seen Night at the Museum they will love it.

I love this museum. I have been there 3 times already.
Some of the exhibits are kind of dark and need better lighting.
Gift store is kind of expensive but the stuff I find there is unique and pretty unusual.
