I remember going to this museum on school trips when I was younger and always being greeted by that giant display of dinosaur bones. I also remember sitting in the seats of a theater shaped like a globe and looking up at a display of the stars and planets and being completely mesmerized. I have very good memories of this place. I even went on a date to the planetarium once for an anniversary and I can't say it wasn't unforgettable. This place is always immaculately clean and the displays are beautiful. The staff is also lovely and very helpful if you need to find your way. I'd recommend visiting this place regardless of whether you're just visiting NYC or you're a resident that just wants some interesting displays to look at.

Nice place to learn nature and human history. The show is perfect, just make sure to buy the ticket with all the shows you want to watch. Just alert some parents, some skeletons of animals or humans may scare little kids. Please make sure your babies can stand these. Because I actually saw some little children were scared to cry.

From what I'd heard and seen about this museum, I thought it would be amazing. And while it has a broad set of exhibitions, a gorgeous entrance hall, and is generally clean, the exhibits lacked information, didn't enwrap me in the spirit of the exhibit (e.g., the Asian Peoples Exhibit), weren't as well maintained/cleaned as expected, and was overall unimpressive.
The Mummy exhibit (which was there when I went) was really neat. It didn't engage me as much as I'd hoped and lacked information but was still really cool.

I've visited museums in the Western US that were far more engaging, informative, and inspiring.

*Fyi, you don't have to pay the full listed admission price. That's only a suggestion. You can pay however much you want to enter.

You cannot go wrong with a visit here. Suitable for anyone aged 5 or up.
You can spend a whole day there, exploring, shopping, learning & eating.
Easily accessible and next to Central Park.
We did experience some issues that were quite uncomfortable and a bummer.
The 45 minute wait to obtain our tickets was a nightmare. The lines for the elevators ridiculous. I did like the option of paying what you want. I did not pay the suggested price due to the wait time, as we only had a certain amount of time to visit. We literally ran down stairs to avoid lines and see as much as we could.
Would return despite the flaws.

The Cafeteria is a mess during the summer. Food is expensive, taste awful. Advise to the museum, you need to rethink the cafeteria as well as the food itself. If you are going to charge as your restaurant neighbors, the at least make it taste decent. Tons of summer camp kids, extremely busy and loud.

Excellent museum - never get tired of visiting. We saw the new titanosaurs exhibit. The ocean wing is always impressive, in particular the giant blue whale. We love the geological and minerals display - especially the jewels. I would recommend visiting when you are not on a tight timetable as there is always plenty to see.

This exhibit is large and takes a long time to see everything. We did not have the time to see everything. The show Dark Universe is a unique experience but the video itself is focused on the Big Bang and less videos of stars or planets which is what we thought it would be. A little disappointed and if the Big Bang doesn t interest you I would go with one of the ocean films.

Due to the crowding problem, we didn t stay long but I should say this would be a great place if you can visit every exhibition. It was just very unfortunate for us that there were too many people everywhere we went.

There was no security to go through unlike 9/11 Museum or Empire State Building. I thought that was strange. Why not here?

One of the special exhibitions, Oceans, was an eye opening documentary. We did not know dolphins actually jumped the high waves just for the sheer of fun.

My experience wasn t so pleasant but that wouldn t hinder the five stars. A ton of materials to see, very educational. I highly recommend this museum.

Tips: Avoid busy times, seriously.

Had a blast with wife and my to children. They are both at a early age of wanting to learn and read everything. There was plenty of that to keep there minds and bodies busy. Definitely recommend going at least once. But the place is big so you may need another visit to see everything

This museum will always hold a special place in my heart. I first saw this museum when I was very young, because my father owned a restaurant directly in front of it, on Columbus Ave and 77th, from the 80s until he sold it in the mid 2000s.

I would go to my 1st and 2nd grade around the block, at PS.87. When I finished school, I'd then go to my dad's restaurant.

I have so many distant memories, such as seeing Mike Tyson enter my father's restaurant after he went to this museum in ~2002. I also remember seeing Toby Maguire when he was filming the first Spiderman movie in 2001, in full costume. And Tom Hanks when he was filming "You've got mail" around the block from here.

I never had the chance to enter this museum until 2010, when I went with my first ever date, and it was so amazing! There is an exhibit for any and everything throughout human history. I also went to the planetarium and it was mind blowing! My favorite exhibit is the one with the blue whale.

Ive been to this museum numerous times, and have nothing but positives to say about it. I havnt been there in a while and certainly would love to go there again! This is the BEST museum ever!

Really nice museum to go with your family while you are visiting New York! You can't miss that, you can even see that Dinosaur from " Night in the Museum" because that is the actual museum where the movie was filmed! Very interesting facts to learn if you are into history! Bring you whole family because it is for all ages and totally worth it!

Amazing experience! The expositions are soooo good and organized. There's hand sanitizer in every entrance, indicators for the 6ft. distance and arrows to follow the right way. They also take your temperature when you go in.
Now they have two extra expositions, T-Rex and Color experience. I went to the T-Rex and it was worthy the extra money (I have to clarify that I love Jurassic Park so to me it was worthy).
They have gift shops in every floor and it's not so expensive.
Bathrooms were really clean and all the personal was very professional and attentive.
Take your kids or family or friends, it's awesome!

This still remains my favorite place to take kids during summer break. So much learning, so much to do at a fraction of a cost if you dont pay the full the suggested donation.
The dinosaur exhibits are a must see and so are the heritage floors.

American Museum of Natural History is one of the best Natural History museum in the world.
If you have time, you should visit this place at minimum 3 days. I had only 1 day and made a quick tour. (meteor section is amazing) Also this museum has perfect mineral, metal and element samples.
Magnificent place with an amazing atmosphere.
If you like natural science, you should see American Museum of Natural History.

The museum is very spacious and has so much information for the knowledge seeker. Definitely at least a two day trip! The Hayden planetarium is absolutely amazing for the science lover to see (plus neil de grasse tyson is awesome), only issue is that the map needs to be more user friendly.

Great Museum! Reservation has to be completed online to save time. Update. You can have a small snack in your bag for little ones.
Overall we had a great time and there was plenty to see. 3 hrs time spent here.

No matter how good the exhibitions are if a museum is poorly organised, as this one is, it is not possible to recommend it. Over an hour to get in, lots of empty sales position, no one advising or supporting the people queueing. and the food court is worse. Six tills and only two open, everyone complaining their food was getting cold. There are a lot of people who would like to work at this museum, sack some of the managers and employ more staff.
And i handed it 3 stars only because three dark universe screening was worh the wait and the frustration. But only just.

Wonderful place to experience with the whole family. Lots of exhibits to explore. Four floors of educational fun and lots to take in, from space to sea. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Great collection and friendly people. However i took THREE stars off because the placards are factually incorrect, projected through a feminist modern day lens and are hardly objective ( which is kind of the point of a museum). I got the distinct feeling this was clobbered together by a novice in history who knew next to nothing about the cultures he/she was writing about. Academic literature, archaeological evidence and anthropological research all contradict what is on the placards. thus only a fumbles mc stupid could have written this. As a professor of history and international macro economy i suggest you fire the person who made these placards. is this a fair review 100%! You are a museum and are there to inform not indoctrinate people.

First of all the suggested price is the price. I offered less money and the snooty ticket giver told me no I had to pay the correct price. Second you get to pick an extra thing to see at a discount that is not included in general admission. They make dinosaurs among us seem like it's going to be super cool like a show. All it was was another room with displays explaining how dinosaurs turned into birds super lame. No reason it can't be included in general admission. Honestly none of their extra items seem wow enough to cost extra. Then to be able to then see the planetarium show I have to pay $17 bucks because it wasn't my origional extra choice! What a rip off! I did not do that. Next for a museum that has a 2 hour night at the museum tour there was barely anything from the movie. The museum does not care about the movie at all they had just some of the animals. That was not fun. The longest line I stood in in my whole trip was the line in the cafeteria to pay for my horribly overpriced lunch. The pizza was gross. The workers in the museum clearly hate their jobs. The bathrooms were disgusting. The gift shops were too expensive and there were few things I thought about getting. The lay out of the museum is convoluted and it takes forever to find your way out to the front door. Forget asking for directions from workers they just stare at you. The few videos they had were short and dull. They could make it so much more fun. I will say all the skeletons were cool especially the titanasaur. Overall I was hugely disappointed. I was so excited to go and now i will never go back. It was overpriced crazy over crowded full of bored workers and just not fun.

Well maintained facility showcasing the variety of species. Mant of the displays help to provide context for how and where the amazing creatures existed. The artifacts are presented to help understand the context and culture they originate from. A true treasure to explore!

Cool stuff but is so outdated. Dusty, dark, dingy. Can t see some exhibits due to low lighting due to bulbs out or the cover between exhibit and bulb is so dirty the light won t shine through! It s difficult to find your way through the museum, no natural pathway. Could be great, probably once was but needs some serious attention. And the choose to pay price??? What the heck is that? Pick a price and charge it to make the line run more smoothly!!!!

Great museum and well worth a visit. Give your self at least 3hours to see the whole museum as there is lots to see and do. The highlight is the TRex exhibition and make sure you do it. It can be extremely busy so go early. We cued up from 9.30am and it was the quietest time to go.

I bought tickets from a third party. Even though the e-ticket looked fine they made us stand in the extremely long line to get a paper ticket. This is terrible customer service and the security people could not be less helpful.

One of the greatest museums in the entire world no doubt and probably my favorite museum I've ever visited. If it's your first time here be prepared to be overwhelmed in the best possible way. This museum has 5 levels all packed to the brim with an endless collection of artifacts and exhibits to see. The great part is that if you're not there to see a special exhibition or extra show then admission is pay what you wish. You have to donate something to get in but it can be as little as 50 cents or a dollar and trust me this museum would easily be worth the 25 dollars suggested admission price.

I spent 2 visits in order to just browse through the different exhibits and I had no time to really read the information on each. I would really like to have spent a few full days to go through everything. Most of the exhibits were great. Major downfall is navigating the map. It was really hard to find where you want to go and specific exhibits so the best strategy is to wander each floor until you have seen everything. There were also a lot of parents taking young children and why they take toddlers still in pushcarts there is beyond me. I went on a Friday and Saturday and it was packed. General admission is by donation but there were a few exhibits that cost from 10-30 dollars if you want the full experience.

This is definitely a must visit. Please do the free tour guides to get a quick and dirty way to see the entire museum. The diaramas are BEAUTIFUL and out of this world.

Wished they had route maps or the recommended route to be taken for all the floors instead of the 4th only.

Very interesting and informative museum. This place is huge! Started with the planetarium and it was an incredible experience. We then moved to the rest of the museum which was also extremely interesting. Without a doubt worth the visit.

Just to summarize for people who don t want to read a lengthy explanation; If the size of a museum s collection were the only aspect to guarantee a solid good review, the American Museum of Natural History would get 5 stars from me, but there are things about the layout which would make the visit more enjoyable. I had high hopes when I entered because of the amount of publicity the museum gets. But what I found was an overcrowded mess of lost people running every which way amongst a confusing mess of ancient relics that were displayed in a dated interior with no clear logical exhibit placement method. Don t get me wrong, I m not giving it 2 stars because of the amount of people. I m giving it 2 stars because although it s collection is magnificent, my visit was stressful and annoying. The layout is confusing and messy, the flow is nonexistent, and the arrangement creates more congestion than is necessary, the corridors are crowded with people who are lost. The building itself is an impressive monument to American architectural identity, it s a shame the inside doesn t reflect that. It becomes tiresome and irritating very quickly trying to find a specific exhibit. To restate and clarify my point, If I gave the museum a rating based specifically on its collection, it would be undoubtedly a 5 star rating, it just isn t arranged in a way that is easy for the visitors to view.

Atmosphere felt more like a children s museum/playground, than a world-class institution. Overly crowded. Apathetic floor staff, with 2 exceptions. Difficult to find where we wanted to go, even with a map. Lacked signage. We enjoyed the planetarium show. High production values. Wish some of that money was applied to signage and customer service training.

Our adult group was left wanting more content, more space and quiet to read the exhibit content, and a bit more help locating the additional exhibits we paid for. Wasn t expecting romper-room.

Simply amazing. A must do attraction in NYC. Reserve the day to attempt to see everything, one day may not be enough if there is way too long of an interest for one area. Buy all special expositions. They are worth the money. The space and dinossaur exhibits were unbelievable.

I am not a big Museum person but The Natural history Museum is by far one of my favorites, especially when entertaining kids. Just walking into the "whale" room will immediately bring you back to your childhood memories. This is certainly the go-to museum for bringing culture to children. Watch their amazement as they see full scale dinosaur replicas, stuffed animals, and "scene" exhibitions. If they're still not impressed, just remind them that this is where they filmed night at the museum. Now you've got a content kid that accidentally enjoyed themselves while learning!

One of the best museum I had visited. It has rich collection of the variety of artefacts. Once a week they have 'pay what you like' days, which provides a good opportunity for students. Among the artefacts I like are- huge crystals, meteoroids samples, humanoid fossils. If you are going here, make sure that you have plenty of time, at least one entire day.

You will probably need to book a whole day if you re planning to visit this museum. It is absolutely huge. Exhibits are displayed in a very old fashion way so be prepared for a lot of reading. There is store on every floor. Restrooms are easy to find and clean. The worst part is huge crowd which you should expect no matter the hour and date.

This museum is definitely a staple if you are in New York. The admission is however much you choose to pay and line to get is only 5 minutes long . The staff members are very friendly and are willing to help and direct you. There are many exhibits that are all well taken care and can interest people of all ages. It is honestly one of the best museums in New York and you will have a great time if you choose to visit.

This is the best museum in the city. The dinosaurs are on one of the first and most amazing stops on the tour. But then there are levels and levels of ecosystems from across time and around the world. There's something here for everyone.
