Go by yourself or with someone who is highly interested. I'm the type who likes to read about each piece bit by bit. It's still worth it though. The only problem is that many things are fake, which took away from the experience, since it was super obvious for some areas. Also, come on a day where it isn't so crowded if possible...

Cafe service is appalling. Easy to get lost in odd museum layout. Not worth paying the full suggested expensive fee and exhibits could be more informative! We went 5 minutes early for the ocean exhibit and employee told us rudely to come back. When we came back there was a huge line for our kids. Why would he not let us line up?
Train your museum and cafe employees to be pleasant and have common sense please!!!!

Very large museum with very little worth to see. It's mostly taxidermy and fake installations of animals made of plastic etc. Their main attraction is a fake plastic fossil of a Titanosaurus. Too few toilets that are always occupied, hard to find and very dirty. Deeply disappointed!

Very clean, hand sanitizer all over the place which is good during this pandemic. I panicked a bit at the amount of guest in and coming to the museum but since most of the museum is not closed off, it allowed people to keep a safe distance. The Ross Hall of Meteorites has staff overlooking the amount of people entering. Just bummed that most of the shops were closed. But safe and clean during pandemic is a good sign.

5 years ago was the last time I've ever been to the museum.
5 years later, this museum and planetarium open the opportunity to new heights for me.
It's also great for visitors, tourist, school field trips, family and fun, and much more.
Just hop on the M10, M79SBS on 81st Street, or better yet, just take the A,B,or C train to 81st Street Station. It's that simple .

World class. Could be called "museum of natural history, sociology, geology, culture and genetics." And then some. The lifetime work of Margaret Meade is a highlight, with its extensive focus on the South Pacific and on methods of sociology field work in general. I spent a full day and never even got to the plantatarium. The newer exhibits, such as the ones on DNA and Neanderthals vs. humanoids, are more interactive and more appealing to younger audience, but the old style dioramas and the Dino exhibits are timeless and priceless. It's exciting to see they are doing programs like "spend the night at the museum" to engage a new generation of scientists and explorers. Admission is by "suggested amount" so don't allow cost to be a barrier. Coat check signs say there's a $3 charge, but they were not taking money when I visited. The danger with visiting such a rich collection is overload. If time in NYC and getting to and from the museum is not an issue, three 2-hour visits would be far preferable to one six hour visit, especially for children. There's just so much to take in. Lucky the NY child who gets to visit repeatedly!

I love the fact that you can donate a suggested value instead of paying the ticket price. We loved the dinosaur exhibit. Walking through made me want to revisit my childhood and watch Jurassic park. We didn't get a chance to visit the planetarium but this is on my list of things to-do. The Ocean exhibit isn't too impressive. One of the cooler but possibly underrated halls was the Native Indian exhibit.

Great museum but the way finding is a bit difficult. Loved the dioramas and the Mummy exhibit! Also I would ha e liked to see the main entrance but it was blocked off. Tip: look up the special exhibits and check the map so you can have an idea of your itinerary and schedule when you get tithe ticket counter!

You could literally spend days here. If you are planning on going, plan on at least two days to see all the things you want. Otherwise you'll be swiftly passing everything and it's just not the same experience. Don't waste it.

I really liked this museum. There was soo much to see and a very broad variety of history that you will not find in many places of the world. Was mind blown at the depth in exhibits. Sadly this is an all day type of thing and I didn't have time to see everything. Highly recommend getting there early to see everything. So much to see. Would go again.

Woah, this place is pretty sweet. My whole life I hated school simply because everything was taught through a textbook. When I went to this museum last May, I was impressed. I did not want to leave. I learned more here than an average high school student does in a day. You can t see this museum all in one day. I didn t get to finish but I ll be back to visit soon. If you want to learn real stuff, forget the boring textbooks and take a trip here. I highly recommend!!!

If you buy a general ticket for the permanent exhibitions (suggested donation of $22 for adults), you ll learn about a wide variety of animals and the history of people in different countries. Unfortunately, most of the permanent exhibits are old - so old in fact that the scientific accuracy and integrity is questionable. Watching videos of people from the eighties describing the advances in genetic research just doesn t seem right.. I d suggest skipping the main exhibit unless you re really interested in the giant squid and the whale; come here for the other changing exhibits like the butterfly conservatory and the 3D films. You ll have to fork over more money for these, but you ll leave feeling more gratified, in my opinion.

The museum needs a major renovation. It's nice that they were open for Independence Day but my time could have been spent better elsewhere. The main issue that I have is the navigation. I felt so lost when I was inside, I couldn't reach any exhibitions. Even though the museum suggests to download the Explorer app to help you. It doesn't really do much.

Mummies' exhibit set up as an $ upgrade with timed viewership of sort. Some exhibits lack proper lighting. Bathrooms are elusive and non working water fountains. Overpriced if buying the tickets. Dino exhibit is great.

Our mistake going during the holiday week but awful. Incredibly crowded to the point where you can't see anything. My sister needed a wheelchair and we were given vague directions on where to go to find security (no wheelchair or help for disabilities)The food court was ridiculous. After waiting in line they have a person tell you there is no line (no effort to inform the 200 people behind us). Then there are food stations with mobs around them to push through (no line) in order to see what they have and try to get something. The only place they organize is payment. Signage is limited and challenging to find an exit to escape. They need to limit admittance and do a better job with crowd control. Wheelchairs for the elderly and help for disabled people should be basic service in a metropolitan museum

How does one begin to rate a place that you could visit every other day for, what? Perhaps the rest of your ever-lovin' life!! So, lived here for a couple of decades plus, began career, fell in love, had/have kids...this place is a compelling destination through all of it. Yeah, yeah, maybe a bit more during the kids stage, but--yeah--we love this place!!!

So a friend told me this museum comes to life when the sun goes down, so of course I stayed past closing time by hiding in the bathroom. Sure enough, the exhibits came to life! I'm rating this three stars only because the monkey stole my keys.

Overall, this is a great museum! I enjoyed my visit here. It has plenty of exhibit halls and special exhibits to walk through or watch. I ended up spending most of my time in the spaxe/planets area and it was fascinating!

It's a "pay what you think" admission if you wait in line for the ticket booth. My family went to the ticket kiosk but they weren't "pay what you think" and we ended up paying the suggested admission price, so be aware of this! The food court was okay, but the prices were pretty high (almost $7 for a slice of pizza!!) and it was very crowded and overwhelming.

History lesson galore!!!
We spent several hours here and feel like we only scratched the surface of what they have. There are amazing exhibits from all over the world, including cultures, communities, nation's, religions, and ecosystems.

We would love to come back and go through more thoroughly. Go check it out.

Lovers of science, rejoice! The dinosaur exhibits here are so fascinating. I also enjoyed the Theodore Roosevelt Rotunda, where I was able to admire a family of elephants, as well as the hall of marine life, where I marveled at a life-sized whale. The staff were so helpful at giving directions where I needed them. My daughter had a great time here during our visit, even though it was very crowded. We will definitely be back to see other exhibits.

Great Museum but it would appear that Eva Braun has been reincarnated and has now popped up working on the 4th floor cafe under the psuedo name of Martha. Please someone teach her not to bark orders at customers and thank you is the appropriate word when someone gives you some money.

Do not get me wrong, I do not hate the museum. In fact it is informative and that it has a nice coverage of things. The downside is that my kid is already a teenager so that it was less interesting for her. Though in fairness to the museum, dinosaurs are truly represented which is part of my interest. Also, there was a part where guests were allowed to touch skulls and a tooth. I found that interesting.

Spent 6 hours in this place where I felt detached from outer life. Loved every part and every corner of it. Even the gift shop was interesting. Also loved their short movies about National Parks (narrator: Robert Redford) and about space and the big bang (narrator: Neil deGrasse Tyson). Lovely structure situated in a very nice place. One of the best experiences of my life.

Extremely crowded on Sundays. I came here to take advantage of the free, 1 year membership through idNYC. That was 6 months ago and I'm still waiting for my membership details. The application process was a complete mess. Who manages this place?

Huge, amazing museum! So many areas and topics to see and learn. Are you a dinosaur buff? You're gonna love that exhibit! Life sized exhibits of living beings from around the world from primates of most sizes to zebras. Definitely a place I'd love to go to again. Spent 5 hours here but still want enough time to go through each exhibit and this was in a very rushed expedient way too!

The exhibits are very well done and the staff are very accommodating. It was very crowded and became a little overwhelming. The restrooms are somewhat hard to find and the maps are a little confusing but mostly a very fun and educational experience.

Everyone should go here at least once in their life. The exhibitions were really good. Take a full day though, you're not doing it justice otherwise. Deep Space was the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. I highly recommend it!

I did the Sleepover for Grownups at the AMNH, and though it was pricey, it was completely worth the cost. The buffet dinner was delicious (the steak was real tough- my only complaint). Everything was open in the museum, and though the planetarium was experiencing technical difficulties, they worked all night to open it the next morning and offered us free tickets to the first show. Included you get champagne, dinner with drinks, a cot, a free tee shirt, snacks all night and a light breakfast in the morning. They raffle off museum gift shop items too! You also get free admission to the museum the following day for you and a guest and another ticket that doesn t expire for a year. They did multiple tours all night and the next morning, and had two guest speakers come give entertaining presentations, one with live animals. Staff was so friendly all night. When I totaled up the price of what everything would have cost on its own, it was just under the price of what I paid. Highly recommend this experience and the museum in general!

Never got to see the inside. The sassy security lady did a go away hand gesture as soon as she saw my suitcase (I was catching a flight later that night, but really wanted to see the collections while I m in town). I asked nicely if there s any other solution, because I won t get a chance to come back in a while. She answered with yeah, take it outside and a finger snap. I understand the policy but all that attitude was not necessary.

Words can't describe my feelings after visiting the museum. Everything from the space show to the dinosaurs fossil to the blue whale is just AMAZING. I just wish I had done more research before I came, and I should have saved more time to spend a whole day here. few of my favourites is the hall of biodiversity, hall of ocean life and hall of north american forests. But all of them is fantastic. I will definitely come back next time when I visit NYC again.

Great museum with some really interesting exhibits in it. Would get five stars but dare I say it, it's a bit jaded in parts and could do with a refresh. That said, for some it could add to the charm.

Horror place... horrible lines, way too busy, no guidance/advice. This place is not up to handling these amount of people. You try to spend time and see something you only end up being in line. Complete waste of time and money.

Breathtaking museum. Huge. I wish I had a whole week just to visit this museum. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and kind, but unfortunately as it was the last tour (4.15) the other employees were constantly kicking us out of the exhibitions.
I'm definitely coming back another day for a longer visit

4 stars bc nothing changed in more than a year, same exhibitions. Good covid protocol, just in this cold weather we have to go outside of the museum to eat something but totally understandable!

I had limited time this time, so definitely plan to go back here again when I have next opportunity to come back to NY. It's clever you have a strategy how to walk around the museum. This is huge as you guess.
The museum has cloak room, it costs 2 dollar per person. You can't leave something to drink nor eat neither. You have to walk around with them. So It's better you won't bring these things.

Amazing place to visit, no need to pay ticket, it s suggested but you can pay the price you want (or nothing). It takes time to visit the entire museum, about 4 hours or more to complete the visit but it s worth it. I suggest to localize what you want to see in the maps before starting the tour so you won t waste time or lose in the way.

Wondered in by accident years back when I was visiting NYC with my mother, checked official website online and see the ticket wasn't compulsory(suggested, but not compulsory. We wouldn't go in if we have to pay). So decided to spend 2 minutes there(we had other plans for later). Then one male staff asked us if we bought tickets, after I told him what I saw online, he mocked us and told us to get out of there like we were beggars. No patient to explain or even try to be nice. Disgusting.
