I should had planned to spend more time since The place is huge, there is so much to see. Best museum I have ever been to.
I should had planned to spend more time since The place is huge, there is so much to see. Best museum I have ever been to.
Lots of interesting facts to keep you going all day, love the dinosaurs!
Great place to spend a lot of time in, both literally and figuratively.
Very big and well arranged spaces. We also attend to the "senses exhibition which was very appreciated by adults and children too. Butterfly is also superbe. Into a relative big nursery you walk into a path surrounded by several species of butterfly. Some of them also land on your arm. We attend at the planetarium the movie projected on the round top screen which is very amazing. Top!!!
While I'm checking out the Hayden Planetarium. I can go here too. I can't believe I've missed this stuff...
The place is amazing, food is extremely pricey for a family of 5. Your allowed to bring outside food. There are four floors of natural history.
World-class natural sciences museum. I really appreciated the free guided tour, but be warned that it's quite short and only scratches the surface of what the museum has to offer. The fossil exhibitions on the top floor are superb.
This place has everything that you want to know about the universe! From the space section to the dinosaurs and the very detailed art from different peoples of the world. Be prepared to allocate at least 3 hours to cover the main parts of the museum.
An amazing experience here. The detail of donating what you choose to makes this accessible to all peoples of every financial background. There is no excuse to not come here and enjoy the splendor of human history...and dinosaurs too!
Very cool museum, lots of different and interesting stuff. It s free - you only need to make a donation, which in our case was $1 per person. It s pretty big, you could spend the whole day there if you want to see everything. We liked a lot the sea and the dinosaurs exhibitions.
Disappointed by the way it is run. Lots to see but the service is awful. 1 person doing coat check. Bathrooms in for need of service. Couldnt enjoy this wonderful place.
Apart from giant meteorites nothing impressive here
Get the app! It will help you find your way around and lead you to the most popular exhibits. Also my recommended path through the museum in general is to start at the top and work your way down - this is a popular path but will minimize backtracking. ALSO! When you get to the fourth floor, start with the Merryl Streep movie shown in the corner of the building. It's not intuitive because it's not near a staircase, but it will explain how the rest of the floor is designed and help you understand what you're touring.
It is up to date in exhibiting the latest explanations of archaeological findings. The current displays are not to missed.
It is everything you expected and even more, a must see when in New York city.
Took my kids to the dinosaur museum today.....spent the whole day looking up at giant sculptures .....I discovered a new species Myneckisaur :))
This place is absolutely amazing. It s really big with four floors. If your going through the stuff somewhat rushed it takes an hour a floor. Also something really cool about this place is that they have a name your price pricing. Essentially you can go in the museum for free. Real cool definitely recommend!
Too Dark
For holding incredible treasures, exhibits are dark, and you cannot read some. Dingy lighting in many halls lends a creepy vibe. Raleigh, NC Natural History museum has better lighting and exhibits. Not impressed with layout. Poor signage.
Tip for going in and making it around smoothly. Start at the top and work your way down. Only one elevator ride, stair descent to the next level, and an easy rout through all the exhibits.
Takes more than one day to properly explore this landmark
This is one of the best museums I know. I've already visited it twice and I will visit it again next time I'm in NYC. The dinosaur sector is fantastic. The sectors of Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Inca and African civilizations are dazzling. It is a fantastic place to take children! The Blue Whale is another fantastic attraction of the museum. speechless.
This place is enormous. Plan to spend at least 4 hours here if you want to see everything.
Entrance fee is pay-what-you-wish, the overpriced restaurants ($14 for a stale sandwich and a juice) and the fact that a few exhibits require an additional fee made me regret paying the suggested $23 ticket price.
This is a must while in NYC! It was very, very crowded when we went (rainy Sunday the week after Thanksgiving). Still thoroughly enjoyed our time.
Great exhibits and facility. Though some staff were not the most pleasant to deal with.
5 stars absolutely . There is so much to see do not miss the Hayden Planetarium. Avoid the food in the cafeteria . They check your bags, so can only bring some snack bars water etc. come early and give yourself plenty of time
The most educational and wonderful experience .. nothing can compare to this museum
Huge facility you cannot explore all but still all 4 levels are accessible for a quick look.
Elevators are very slow and crowded so opt for srairs.
Go to museum before 10am and buy tickets online.
do take the show of Planetarium..Amazing movie about stars and space.
Collection of Dinosaurs is amazing.
Such a great museum, there's tons to look at and the exhibits are wonderful.
It really enjoy this place, it's interesting, complete, and there is an application for know where you are . It's unforgettable, and very incredible!
This is a great experience with a secret entrance so you do not pay. It is a huge place, you cannot finish the whole museum in one day, I been visiting this place or the las lot three years and I still have something to read or something to see. There are these other things you have to pay for it and I really don t know if it worth it.
I love this museum, this time I went with my mom who is on wheelchair, and I like that it s very accessible to her.
There were so many stairs in this museum and I did not find any easy way to go around the exhibits as it was very confusing compared to other museums I ve been too. Paid extra to go to the butterfly area which had many different butterflies from many countries. The butterflies were landing on a few people.
Love love love. Especially the indian peoples exhibit. Was able to explain to my nephew about how important indian tribes are to American history, since this is not something they teach in schools as far as the importance. Love this museum. Only thing I wouldn't do again is go to the butterfly exhibit. Wasn't worth the money.
If you have kids of 2 y and older this place is a must-go. Don t forget to reserve tickets online, and masks for everyone.
This place was so amazing and you just lose track of time here.
Awesome! Wish I could've spent more time there. Dinosaur exhibits by far my most favorite.
Pro tip: If you are going to drive in and have anything bigger than a sedan, just use the museums parking garage. An outside garage with an early-bird rate and "oversized" vehicle fee is the same price. Unless you are planning to stay in the area all day (until 7pm).
At the time of the posting.
Best early bird rate: $19 (3 blocks away)
Oversize vehicle fee: $15
+ tax
Museum parking for 5 hours: $35(ish)
It is a great feeling to see the American Museum, because this is my first time of visiting the museum.
This place is incredible! It's huge and massive. I went with my brother to see the Hayden planetarium. He s a huge Neil Degrass Tyson fan. The place by far extended my expectations. I didn't even know Night at the Museum was shot there and now I just want to watch it again.
Tip: Buy your tixs online and print them out. Also wait 15-20 after it opens to arrive to avoid the crowd.
The museum is very educational, but the IMAX is a horrible experience for the price. I would not recommend ever seeing an IMAX here. The viewing angle is bad for your neck. They won't let you set on the mezzanine unless the theater is full. The employees also talked about how we are dumb for wanting to have a better view when it was avaliable.
Okay, I went there like last week. Omg there were rude people and people being rude because of race. I had a bad experience and I'm not sure if I will ever go back there. This is my opinion so plz don't get offended but there was such rude people there. I had such a bad bad experience. That's not good.
Nobody should ever have to deal with the disrespect I and the rest of my peoples that were there with me got.
Free entry. But donate some money, the place is great! Fun exhibits for adults and kids. Easy to spend whole days here.
It is famous for a reason. Excellent exhibits, interesting things to learn and see.
This was on my daughter s must see list (National Treasure). We ran out of time to see everything but it didn t disappoint.
So many neat things to see and learn! Definitely add on the planetarium show!
Old school museum with a lot of great and huge collections of pre-historic art from all around the world. Lots of people at all times so book the ticket online
First Fridays at the museum are such a great time and a really great crowd!
The museum is huge and far more than a family could see in one day unless you power walked everything on a day a lot less crowded than a rainy day during spring break.
The kids in our party were 2, 7, and 10 and all of them found something to be fascinated by. The youngest liked the lighted dioramas of mammals the best, the oldest the dinosaurs and the middle child the blue whale and meteorite.
My only modest complaint is that the elevators are S L O W. We eventually decided it was best to have one person carry the 2 year old up and down stairs and two more carry the stroller. This might not be as much of a problem on a day that is less packed.
Currently $22 to enter... Plan to spend at least an hour to two... Checkout the Inka exhibit in the back, some very unique pieces... The shrunken heads are cool! Also be sure to check out the mammals exhibit.
Bored on a rainy day? Have nothing to do? You should try the Natural History Museum! You might like these exhibits: Early Man, African Mammals, Native Americans, Crystal and Gems, and Totem Poles. I also like that the background has More
I've been here several times & it's always been wonderful! Lots to see & take in. I liked to see all the dinosaur bones & the Egyptian exhibit.
Donation based museum with amazing collection! A must to visit
It doesn't matter how many times you've been to this museum, it is never boring here. Your children are growing up, and each next time with them you discover this fabulous place anew. That s fantastic! Keep in mind you need almost a day to visit the huge collection of amazing and wonderful natural history of America.
love their dinosaur exhibit. parking in their garage is expensive as hell. and visitor tip: if you can get the NYCID, you get a free 1 year membership with it.
Came to see the museum but closed to public due to an event which is fine but I advised they should put a sign up to let customers know and she was extremely rude saying there was and there was not, work on your customer service
Has pretty much everything you need. You can definitely visit everything in one day if you rush. How do you do it - Get the full access ticket and schedule all the exhibitions in advance. This ticket is definitely worth it. If you buy tickets inside, there is probably a line for them. I went on a Wednesday in February when it had snowed heavily in the morning. Still the museum was jam packed. I liked all the exhibitions except unseen oceans ( which was just a section which was primarily targeting kids ) and would highly recommend backyard wilderness, space show ( if you want to hear Neil's voice ) and butterfly conservatory ( if you like to take pics with butterflies sitting on you ).
Tips-
1. Decide what kind of ticket you want in advance and buy it online.
2. Recommend to not buy tickets for shows inside.
3. Take the map and ask the staff where the exhibitions are being held and mark them. They are really difficult to find on your own even with the map.
4. Plan the route taking into account exhibition times as they are scattered all over.
5. If you decide to see it all in one day, come as soon as it opens, if you don't wanna drop dead at the end of the day and definitely plan your route.
Pros:
1. Has all the sections for a natural history museum
2. Chair of Hayden planetarium is Neil Degrease Tyson ( don't think he is here much though )
3. I loved touching the meteors ( Dont think I touched any in the DC museum )
Cons:
1. Too many children
2. Staff do not care about you as evidenced by letting all people rush in when the planetarium
3. I personally liked the museum in DC
4. Some sections were closed and it was not mentioned so in the map
The Ocean Life section is breathtaking! Worth the price of admission
A few tips for this place. Purchase tickets in advance online and pre- schedule all of the special exhibits. We we entered through the Rose Center Planiterium and got right in. Parking for SUV was $44 from open to close. My husband and son fell asleep during the 3D Whale show but my daughter and I loved it. The butterfly exhibit was nice, but I have been to much better ones. Dark Plant and the Mummies r must see exhibits. Of course the kids loved the dinosaurs. The food court was crazy overpriced, but we expected that. Overall great family day.
Loved this museum as a child and all through adulthood. Can never get enough. It's still my favorite place to go anytime.
A first class natural history museum. Takes more than one day, so if you don't have it then plan ahead or wander.
Dinosaur and space exhibits are a lot of fun. Good luck seeing everything in one day. This place is massive. Choose a few sections you'd like to visit and skip the rest.
Brilliant museum. And also very much worth the extra price to go to the Hayden Planetarium show!
My daughter loves Night at the museum!
Brought her here after watching the movies on family night. She didn't want to leave.Wonderful experience. Exhibits were momentous. Can't wait to get her back so we can see the new ones. Mommy love you so much! Cant wait to see you! See you soon.
Iconic building and museum. The planetarium was pretty nice. Can be super crowed, but I guess that depends on time of the year you go.
Massive museum, with impressive collection. Don't expect anything alive in there, as it is a real Natural History Museum, with loads of stuffed animals. Over the years, the Museum clearly collected several prime samples of various species - for example the moose where massive!
I really loved this place! Is a shame I couldn't saw it entirely, but the parts I could see were really impressive. I hope I can return to New York someday and visit the museum again.
A world of discovery right of Central Park! Came here to check out the butterfly conservatory and loved it! The conservatory has 500 free flying butterflies at any given time and if you're lucky, one might even land on you! Great exhibit and totally worth going. It is open till May!
Beautiful depiction of history. The planetarium inside is a must visit too
My favorite museum in NYC!!! So many amazing exhibitions, so many things to see! My favorite is the planetarium!! They have a breath-taking 30-minute show about the big bang theory! Worth every penny. Also, they have a really fun dancing party have that you have to check out! You can dance next to the meteors and weight yourself on the moon while listening to music.
The Museum is awesome, the food in the food court was subpar, cold, undercooked, and outrageously over priced. Do Not Eat Here.
The best part of my trip. So much to see, each exhibition well put together and sectioned. Amazing artifacts from all over the world and so little time to digest it all. Loads of replicas and reenactments and molds depicting the culture of peoples. The only issue I had was identifying what was authentic and what had been made for display as there were no detailed descriptions of each item. And the dinosaur exhibition was life-size, as was most of the others and jaw widening. Do not miss this. Tickets are $23 for general admission, $28 for plus one special show (pick of volcanoes, dinosaurs or Butterflies) and $33 for all specials
As a taxidermy enthusiast, the Natural History museum has to be one of my favorite places on earth (though wow, does the primate exhibit leave something to be desired...but that's old taxidermy for you). Even my parents, who are normally horrified by it, found many of the (newer) taxidermy models of polar bears, seals, birds, buffaloes, and more, to be extraordinary. I think I could die happily in front of the Wall of Biodiversity (which you have to pass in order to see the iconic blue whale - get ready for that if that's not your jam).
D'yknow what I love just as much as taxidermy? Bones. Know what this museum has? Bones. Tons of freakin' dinosaur and other fossil bones. To the point where on the seventh or so room full of bones even I was like "alright, we can speed walk this one". Still, worse things in the world than an excess of knowledge, and that's what the Natural History Museum has in spades.
On an unrelated note, the gift shop(s) here amazed me in how reasonably priced they were. $25 dollars for a hoodie I wear constantly, when it wasn't even on sale? Nice.
Horrible museum staff. Anthony the manager said we could park in front of building for only one hour but didn t keep his work and only 30 min later called us on the intercom to move the vehicle. No sign
Don't book online. You still have to wait in line. Such a scam with the online tickets! Viator shame on you. Shame on the museum for not handling online reservations better.
Let alone that the ticket is a suggested donation so when you are in line you can decide what your donation will be.
I had a wonderful time here with my family. Everything was Amazing and beautiful. It deserves more than 5 stars.
A must visit museum!!! Please go visit to see all the exhibits. The history of all over the worlds early art and history. I was amazed will the history of every culture and dinosaurs exhibit.
The American Museum of Natural History (abbreviated as AMNH), located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City is one of the largest and most celebrated museums in the world. Located in park-like grounds across the street from Central Park, the Museum comprises 25 interconnected buildings that house 46 permanent exhibition halls, research laboratories, and its renowned library.
The collections contain over 32 million specimens, of which only a small fraction can be displayed at any given time. The Museum has a scientific staff of more than 200, sponsors over 100 special field expeditions each year,[5] and averages about five million visits annually.
You could spend two days in this place! Everything is so cool.
Been going there since I was a child I'm 60 now I've taking my children and I will take my grandchildren, great place to take family and friends, no matter the weather if it's cold windy or rainy it's all indoors and it's a wonderful place you can spend the whole day there and enjoy every minute, and we can't wait to go back to continue our exploration of history.
Well maintained huge museum. Need a full day if you want to see everything well other wise atleast 3-4 hours. Purchase tickets at counter if you want pay less or more than suggested price.
The planetarium, view of the stars was awe inspiring, the story behind it ? trash. The rest of the museum awe inspiring, humbling, beautiful, definitely a place I would want to visit again. Too much to do in one day. Will be back.
