Some wonderful shops here - "Leaf", the vegan food store is a favourite!
Really good disability access too (several lifts to all floors & plenty of wheelchair accessible toilets) though wheelchair users may need a hand getting over the door sills of individual shops....

A bit about the Piece Hall's heritage;

YORKSHIRE S MOST IMPORTANT SECULAR BUILDING
The Grade I listed Piece Hall, Halifax is a rare and precious thing, an architectural and cultural phenomenon which is absolutely unique. It is the sole survivor of the great eighteenth century northern cloth halls, a class of buildings which embodied the vital and dominant importance of the trade in hand woven textiles to the pre-industrial economy of the West Riding of Yorkshire, from the Middle Ages through to the early nineteenth century.
Dating from 1779, when it was built as a Cloth Hall for the trading of pieces of cloth (a 30 yard length of woven woollen fabric produced on a handloom), The Piece Hall was the most ambitious and prestigious of its type and now stands in splendid isolation as the only remaining example. It is one of Britain s most outstanding Georgian buildings.
It is impossible to overstate the scale and importance of this trade, not just to the history of Halifax and the West Riding, but to the nation as a whole over some 800 years between the twelfth and eighteenth centuries.
When it was built, The Piece Hall was a highly visible statement of the great wealth, pride and ambition of the cloth manufacturers. Although built for trade, it also embodied the most cultured sensitivities of the Enlightenment; these bluff northern manufacturers deliberately chose a design for their building which adapted the neo-classical orders of architecture derived originally from the Romans.
From its inception, The Piece Hall was a stunning combination of commerce and culture, an icon of hard business but also a broader statement about the history, the lives and the values of its surrounding community. This fascinating mix of purpose and idealism business, arts and people, continues to influence and drive The Piece Hall s role today. A direct link back over almost a quarter of a millenium of history.

After a long period of time closed, and a beautiful restoration, it needs to get the buzz back. Too many empty units that were once filled with quirky shops, antique dealers and booksellers. You can only sell so many scented candles.

Let's see the open market on the square, some proper local market stalls that ordinary folk might want to shop at weekly, and soul put back in.

You can spend a long time here doing absolutely nothing. The kids will enjoy the space for running around and you might find something you like in one of the independent shops. Library next door and it's slap bang in the middle of Halifax - love it!
Tip to the managers of this place : if there was a decent fish and chip shop in here, they'd absolutely rake it in.

The Piece Hall is a lovely place to spend a couple of hours on a sunny afternoon. There is a wide range of reasonably priced boutique shops dotted around the various mezzanines. The little ice cream parlor does fantastic set of delicious and tempting flavours, all at a price much lower than I expected - they even had soy milk for my wife's cup of tea. It would be even better if there were a few more shops filling out the vacant units, but nevertheless it is still able to take up an enjoyable portion of your day. The court yard has recently been refurbished and recobbled and fits lovelyly with the graded original architecture. On a winter's afternoon the low sun can make for some very dramatic shadows and contrasts in and around the cloisters - I couldn't stop myself taking photos of the place.

Many years since I last visited. Beautiful and sparkling but not the place I remember. Gone are the dark stones and stone flags have been replaced by new granite. At first glance it is no longer a cloth hall. I was disappointed.

It's so refreshing to find independent shop's, there are many little individual shops from Sweet's to book stores. If you want the mainstream shops it's a very short walk to get to them from the independent shop's, and you can also find an indoor market too. I wish there were many more town centres like Halifax. If you want to find Xmas presents that are not mass produced then go to Halifax, you will find inspiration from the independent shop's that are all around The piece hall. There are so many different types, it's just a great place to go to do your shopping.

Very good location to have multiple events. Went for Chow Down it was brilliant and there is always more stores and a variety of food and bands playing. Also the History about Halifax with the different rooms on different levels is interesting. With the variety of shops I think that Halifax is on its way to becoming a city and an international Tourist Attraction!

Excellent refurbishment of a truely historical site.....well done Halifax....sadly marred by the intimidating youth's on cycles that security were unable to control...although they tried..
