What can be said that hasn't already been said about York Minster. A jewel in the crown of the City. Quite magnificent in its construction, history and as a place of worship. Take a guided tour to learn about the real history, the people, the lovely stained glass windows and the tragedies that have happened there. Then just stop, take a moment of time for yourself and breathe in the atmosphere - quite special.

Without a doubt a beautiful building which must require imense funding for preservation and upkeep. Although other heritage buildings like Lincoln and Durham Cathedral allow those who don't want to pay for a full visit to at least see a view of the aisle, unless you pay to proceed further than the roped off section in the top corner entrance, there is very little to see of the inside of York Minster. I feel this is a shame, sitting slightly uncomfortably against the nature of what this building represents and for what it was intended.

York Minster is a beautiful historical building which I thought would be a lovely Christmas setting to celebrate our, on coming Christmas, with a visit to the Christmas Carol concert, however we are so dissapointed with the scaffolding which was erected directly behind the choir, which looked very very untidy,no effort was made to cover this up with a back drop or some kind of screenings.
There was no up to date Christmas songs sang by the choir ie: Slient night, We three kings..

Such a fun cute and historical area and town to be in. Shopping eating and learning about the history. Oh and wonderful walking. ...that being said, lots of people agree, as there are a lot of people here.

This is fantastic for a visit, lots of information on the Roman history of York. It is absolutely steeped in history.
To be inside here and think how long the building has stood and how well detailed all of the craftwork is, is truly amazing.

The imposing cathedral is one of the two largest medieval ones in northern Europe. 4 stars, because the cross could not be entered. Admission is paid and information indicates that you can also climb one of the three towers.

The second largest gothic cathedral in the whole of Northern Europe. A true feast for the eyes and a wonderful building in all its greatness. Located in the centre of York, with many things to do around the same area. I spent hours admiring the detail on the York minster cathedral, and researched all about its history and origins. This cathedral took around 500 years to build and was completed in 1472, most of it still intact to this day. I highly recommend visiting this place.

Steeped in history and sharing it successfully with tours, roving volunteer experts and a museum in the crypt. The organ is currently being overhauled but a substitute served very effectively for a lovely evensong service. We visited both days in our stay in York.

Enormous and impressive cathedral. Spectacular from the inside and out! Includes the largest medieval stain glass window in Europe on the east wall (opposite side from the entrance). There is free entry to the Minster for York uni students. For a small additional fee you can go up the tower for great views of the city. A museum in the crypt outlines the history of the Minster and is well worth a visit. If you're not a York student, you can get free entry (sort of) by attending one of the daily services.

Definitely a place worth visiting. They have guided tours every hour. The experience of the visit is completely different when guided. Also, the guides are pretty good. They are volunteers and it shows that they have passion for what they do.

I had the good luck to visit while the bells were pealing. The sheer sensory scale of the place was moving. I would highly recommend it to anyone. Check out the Roman remains in the crypt!

Living in York means you almost forget about this place, but it is a beautiful place both inside and out, I DO NOT agree with having to pay to go in, but if it is a once in a lifetime trip, then it has to be done.

It's quite clear that it's the biggest gothic church in the north of Europe, it's massive, but it's not the most beautiful I have ever seen. The windows inside needed a restoration which I know they are starting with a huge project. Despite of this I recommend a visit especially doing the 275 steps to go on top of the tower enjoying the view of York, it worth the extra 5 pounds.
