A classic KC institution i've been returning to for many years. An annual family tradition started by my grandparents, going on 40 years now.

The staff is always sweet and friendly, one of the last places they still call you 'Hon. 50's style decor in a simple, humble setting.

Diner-style smashburgers are the main attraction, juicy thin steak patties with crispy edges stacked high. Also the onion rings are great, plus a variety of classic soda fountain fare. Far better than the fast food chains and very affordable.

I heard a lot about the food so wanted to try it out, the food was Just Okay , not worth making a big hooplah out of it, its a one time go. Service was excellent but the food doesnot complement the same.

I have been going to Winsteads since I was in the second grade. I have always loved their food especially breakfast. While the prices do jump occasionally it is still a good deal. Most of the value comes from the atmosphere inside of the restaurant. If its your first time visiting definitely dine in.

For starters the only thing open 24 hours is their drive through. If I'd known that I wouldn't have gone there. When I got there the drive through line was ridiculously long and slow. When I finally got my burger and fries they weren't even warm and my burger didnt have the right toppings.

This place is a classic! Been going here since the 60s. It has a friendly, cozy feel that belongs to a bygone era. Love the double burgers and fries. Yesterday my son and i had lunch here. He has some dietary restrictions and they accomodated his request without a bit of trouble! Highly recommend!

This establishment was disgusting. We went there yesterday with our kids after Christmas shopping. The hostess was rude, sat us at a table where other children were already seated. When we told her this, she made us kick them out. My husband used the restroom and watched a cook urinate and not wash his hands. Our "frosty's" (plain chocolate ice cream) came completely frozen in Styrofoam cups, so we couldn't eat it without the cup ripping. Our spoons were dirty. Our waitress openly talked trash about the other servers. Our orders were wrong. And when we spoke with the manager she seemed a little surprised, but mainly cracked out.

Established in 1940 this pre-WWII diner is as much a staple of Kansas City as Arthur Bryant s BBQ. While not everyone is a fan of the thinner Great Depression era burgers, when they are paired with the: malts, ice cream and soda fountain drinks you feel like you are sharing in a piece of classic Americana.
When you re in the restaurant it s easy to imagine past generations learning of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, G.I.s having their last meal before going off to fight fascism in Europe, greasers revving up their hot rods in the parking lot or young men learning they have been drafted to fight in Vietnam. There is so much history in the walls of this diner, it s worth a visit to make your own.

Winstead's drive thru is open 24/7, which is really convenient for someone who's from a big city looking for late night grub. They have a good selection of classic American diner food and it's super cheap! If you're craving junk food at 2 am, this is a good place to keep in mind. Also their apple pie/cobbler thing a la mode is DELICIOUS!

The french fries were absolutely fabulous because the oil that is was fried in was fresh and clean. Fries came out perfectly brown, not soggy or over cooked.
Will be back as soon as possible....

Absolutely delicious food at great prices. The burgers are amazingly good. Unfortunately the food you receive is often different from what you order. Order a malt, get a shake. Order a burger with mayo, get mustard. That type of thing. Make sure to check your order and you'll be golden.

As the standard-bearer in off-plaza eateries, this one is well travelled, and probably hasn't had any significant makeovers since... ? That being said its popular for a reason. Decent enough sock-hop era type food for a decent price. Burger and a malt. Who can beat that? Four burgers, a chicken sandwich, side of fries, side of tots, three drinks, two chocolate malts... $42 bucks. Waitress was sick of dealing with people. Food was out fast, bathrooms were kooky and tired.

I got the combo breakfast with blueberry pancakes and a side of rye toast. All cooked well. The blueberry pancakes were especially delicious. Bacon was crispy as were the hash browns. Eggs were over easy but I asked for over medium, not a big problem though. When we first got there, my wife didn't have high expectations but she was pleasantly surprised. She ordered the double cheeseburger with tots. She was very pleased with her food. Great job Winstead's!!!
