Exhibitions very hit and miss but of course, that'...
Exhibitions very hit and miss but of course, that's subjective. Maybe check what's on before you go. Has my favourite bookshop in London.

The exhibition (s) should only appeal to you, but the building is in itself recommended! And the store too, very nice collection! Especially in the field of crea children's books.
Love modern art, then get locked in and dive into the fourth dimension.
Huge gallery with a varied programme shows and exhibitions that can big names or new emerging artists. Hreat way to spend a few hours if art is your thing.
The exhibition made me question the ability of the people choosing the art for the Elizabeth line
A small and mostly free gallery. Does not make an impression, especially to go to it is definitely not worth it
Came a few times for free exhibitions and enjoyed most of the time.
Great place with interesting exhibitions that are usually free.
Smaller than expected with a limited number of exhibitions.
Great gallery. Really liked the exhibitions and the layout. A lot of variety of media too.
The temporary exhibits on the first floor are usually interesting.
It's a bit unexpected to find an art gallery in Whitechapel, so I kind of looked forward to visiting. The gallery is a mixed bag of education focused on local history and the people of the east end. And large spaces devoted to exhibiting works of contemporary artists, as well as visual arts exhibitions.
Much of the contemporary art and sculptures looked like the output of teenage art classes and one of the film shown on 4 wide screens looked like amoeba travelling under the sea. The latter was a bit too abstract for me.
I'm not a big fan of contemporary art, so perhaps my opinion should be taken in that context.
The space is huge but they could use it more efficiently with the arrangements. The temperature is various between different galleries. You have to adapt yourself to some very chilly ones.
Very interesting and very contemporary art space. Exhibitions always very accurate and interesting. Small library and small but pleasant bar.
Lovely local gallery with a wonderful cafe, the Refectory.
Really original gallery space a stone's throw from Aldgate East tube. Great building & eclectic exhibitions. A great find!
Cool contemporary art with regularly changing exhibitions
There's more than you would think given the small front.
Enjoyable afternoon with my daughters and a good variety of art
A bit too conceptual and abstract for me but always something interesting to see.
Perfectly fine. Quite small, discrete decor. Nothing about it distracts from your company, which certainly has a place in this age of wow factor and hype machines.
Fantastic contemporary gallery with a great selection in the book shop
nice venue, good exhibitions occasionally, although rarely now is the cutting edge is used to be
A lovely place to go for a sip of contemporary art and a nice coffee. Staff always friendly and the environment sweet and cozy.
Beautiful building, friendly staff and some fantastic art. The cafe is well worth a visit!
Started with a lovely exceptionally tasty lunch at the newly refurbished and open Townsend restaurant in the gallery foyer. Then went to view the Painting in the new Millenium: Radical Figures exhibition. Particularly enjoyed work by Daniel Richter - amazing use of colour. 'Tarifa' (2001) was emotionally moving. Menacing seas. Lord Michael Armitage's video on his use of tree bark to paint on; Nicole Eisenman's Brooklyn Biergarten was mesmerising in its detail. Tschabala Self' a assemblages and applique were full of energy and powerful. A great trip. Would recommend the gallery and this exhibition.
A piece of London's art history with great contemporary exhibitions
i dont know why, but when i went to the gallery there was nothing good...
all very nice, definitely consider going long if you have time
There are interesting exhibitions of contemporary art.
Has always been a great gallery with lots io nteresting stuff going on Their covid response is very reassuring and I had no hesitation in visiting. Temperature taken on arrival, face masks worn by everyone including staff, limits on amount of people in each room etc. Very impressed.Great mixed exhibitors on at the moment with something for everyone
Really great shows with lots of interesting pieces!
Emblematic place to see contemporary art. Definitely you must go if you're into visual arts.
Good art shows and bookshop, good community outreach programme and good staff
Really nice contemporary art gallery. The place is small but really enjoying
I seem to recall it used to be free? Not the most inspiring exhibition when we went (Aug 2019). Yes I know it's all subjective ...
Some great exhibitions, been here twice and completely different both times and always good
Beautiful building and exteriors. Filled with great art and maintained some interesting conceptual projects despite the lockdown.
Pros: always have good shows. Free Walk in available. Events are super nice too!
Cons: Expensive shows as oppose to many free exhibitions in London. If show is good like Benidict Drews or Mark Dion then its worth paying for that extra exhibition. If not its really waste of money. Always look at reviews before going/paying.
There were lots of interesting and modern works and it was fun.
It is very close to the tube station. Unfortunately, when I went there were not many good expositions...It is better to check their website first.
Hand sanitiser, one-way system, timed bookings all in place!!
Friendly staff always there for advice plenty of existing things to see and a good shop with lovely drinks and food to serve
The free exhibitions are often pretty abstract and certainly modern. Can be difficult to get your head around and sometimes a bit patchy, but great that it exists. Has cafe and toilets too.
A tiny bit confusing to navigate around inside the building. Overall interesting content in the gallery and very easy to locate, I went to view the Helen Cammock collection which was very informative.
It is nice gallery, needs more exhibits in my opinion.
Lovely little gallery in East London. Part is free and special exhibits paid. Really good bookstore, too.
They have a terrific Jackson Pollock in the permanent collection and the place is just nice to walk through. The cafe is a relaxing place off a busy road to kill a little time if like me you were waiting for a Jack the Ripper walking tour to start at Aldgate East tube station. The museum has a lot of history and avant garde bona fides. Stumbled upon this when travelling elsewhere as it s next to Aldgate East tube station and thought I d look in. Good exhibition. Although, I wasn t blown away, with free admission I can t complain as it was still a good experience. Fantastic book shop too- certainly the star of the show and all very well priced.
Interesting place. However the area surrounding is not very clean. I wish authority will do something about it.
I come to know about the gallery reputation so I am eager to see.
Great Thomas Ruff exhibition. Enthusiastic informative staff. Ideal venue for display. This exhibition was brilliantly curated. Well placed, coherent siting of exhibits showing everything of to the max. Amazing
Occasionally there are some exhibitions worth going to see. Regardless, this is a nice gallery space.
Appreciated it having a free section as well as the payed area, was disappointed with the availability of the art pieces
Interesting exhibitions associated to social behaviours.
An incredible gallery that after a long history of bringing challenging fine art to East London still pushes boundaries. Great range of exhibitions all the time, fascinating stuff in the gift shop and a solid cafe.
Very interesting space for artistic display, not very large but with plenty of rooms and a logical layout to help visitors.
Small art gallery but always full of very interesting and alternative exhibitions
