When other shelters in the county were requiring you to make an appointment days in advance, we were able to easily schedule a time to stop in and pick out a kitten. We brought him home same day and they made the process so easy. Clean facility and friendly staff, would definitely go back.

We were able to save a poor cat, whose previous owner declawed her and abandoned her.. she'd been there for 4 months.. Honestly she's as affectionate as a dog, just the sweetest cat I've ever met.. We love our Jacqueline and she loves us back... & its not subtle haha. Adoption process was really easy, it may be free to adopt some animals, but please donate to them... They rely on it.. and if you can't/won't actually care for a pet. Don't bother getting one, you're just hurting them even more.. At least at the shelter its consistent. Taking them home & ignoring them/not caring for them is a special type of cruelty & they deserve better... If you actually will care.. This place is amazing. Thank you for our amazing Cat.. She always makes our days better and so far she seems really happy here. I'm so glad we went :-D

I had a stray follow me home. He is a good boy, but is not fixed and my dogs don't appreciate him up in their bits! I called dispatch to be told that if he is not hurt or vicious they can't pick him up!! I inquired if they still had the drop off boxes, where I could take him and drop it off, I was told no! Let's make it as hard as possible to take care of lost fur babies! Now I will be locking him in a room and will be late to work in the morning to drop him off.

It took a little long for them to processs and get through the adoption paper work but I m sure it s necessary. Outside of that, the staff was very pleasant and kind. We visted 6 shelters and west valley animal shelter was definitely one of the cleaner ones, which was nice. We adopted our first dog, a handsome pit/heeler mix and have been so incredibly happy. He was very well cared for and very healthy after being at the shelter a couple weeks. Also, the shelter is very affordable and fairly priced with sterilization, microchip and vaccinations plus the stellar care. We have cats at home and when asked How he was with felines, they weren t sure. So, they took him back to the cats with us to make sure he d be a good fit.... I sincerely appreciated it and thought it was really great they wanted to make sure he d work out for our family (we did not have this experience at most other shelters we visited). Thank you for such a good experience and bringing such joy to our lives. We love him so much and greatly appreciate all the hard work you do!

I had to double-check where I was, was I at the DMV or the West Valley City shelter? The customer service here is atrocious. They have you take a number when you come in and then they don't even call out any numbers. I sat in the seats as instructed while they helped two other people that had come after me. I finally got up and stood in front of them while they continued to ignore me. All I had to do was pay a $5 fee for my dog, I don't understand why it had to be so complicated.

Very dirty and unfriendly staff. We were adopting a cat and the water in his room was yellow and the entire place smelled. They told us he was perfectly healthy, other than he had "allergies." Well, we took him to a good vet. He had a viral infection and got antibiotics for it but it kept coming back, so we had to do an ultrasound and he has a big infection in his intestines. We have spent over $800 on vet bills despite the shelter saying he was healthy when we adopted him. I'm not mad about having to spend money to get our baby boy healthy again. I am mad that their vet is either incompetent or they legitimately do not care about the well-being of the animals. How long has our cat had this infection that no one noticed? Are there animals there now that have health issues being ignored? I would hope they would take a little better care of the animals or just send them all to the Humane Society and close their doors. Unacceptable.

I went in to look at adoptable cats. The tenants here know a great deal about each cat- name, personalities, if they like other animals, where they came from, etc. I had a great time here. I wish I could take them all home, however I will be seeking out to save a pet from a kill shelter (lindon animal shelter) the cats here are lovely and I'm certain all will find happy homes.

Due to Wesr Valley animal control being attached to this shelter I am placing my review here. The animal control is extremely unhelpful. I called in about a dying animal the owner was trying to sell me and the officer only said they have an open case about it and told me to give her back. The officer told me the what ever the owner did with the animal was her right. Instead I took the animal to a vet and they literally could do nothing but put her down due to her extreme malnutrition and dehydration. How could someone do that to an animal and how could an officer who is supposed to help these animals completely dismiss her death?

We lost our dog over the weekend and even though they were closed they let us see our dog and verify he was okay. Grateful that he wasn't hit by a car and was cared for by the kind staff! He was also vaccinated and we were finally able to get him microchipped so this never happens again.

When we adopted our cat this one lady (no name, but you know who you are) talked me into not declawing front paws at same time we did spay & neuter just buy toys. Several years later and dozen of toys, boards, polls with catnip, multi level 4 feet tall house, I had to do it what a mess. Don't let her talk you out of it there are plenty of vets around that will do it. Just do it.

I'm checking myself on this one and I'm giving much respect and a Big Salute to the Animal Service officers that handled things with my dog. My dog knicked a kid and they responded about things. I automatically assumed the officers would be A-Holes, but these two men were outstanding on how they handled things and explaining things to me!!! Thank you!!! My dog still went to jail, but I'm gonna bail him out. He still has to do ten days in quarantine though.

We went to go adopt a puppy here. This ended with a member of the staff hanging that puppy by his neck via leash and collar. They insist you bring your dog(s) in to meet the new dog which is great and all but they have no facilities for the dogs to meet comfortably. They shove you, your entire family and your dog(s), with the new dog in an 8x8 cinderblock room. This made our dog nervous because she is a rescue and spent a lot of time in shelters. We are new to introducing dogs to each other so we were asking for tips and the staff was completely unhelpful and ignored our questions. We were trying to make it a positive experience for both dogs by giving them treats. We're still learning here. We have done a lot of research on the matter but we needed some guidance from the staff who should be familiar with helping dogs meet each other. Unfortunately the food was a bad idea because our dog thought the puppy was stealing her treats and she got aggressive when the staff member promptly hung the poor little guy buy his collar. Admittedly, we now realize we need to socialize our dog better before we get another dog. That said, you'd think the staff would know enough about dogs to recommend not using treats or at least be able to help us make the dogs comfortable. I asked if they would get used to each other and the staff wouldn't even look at us and stormed off with the puppy. Sorry we adopted a dog that was abandoned and probably abused for the first few years of her life. She needs a friend and the staff here treated us and our dog like monsters. We are getting her some more training but we expect far better expertise and customer service from this place. (see picture for a peek at our vicious monster dog)

Friendly staff. I really like how often their website is updated. I was able to see the dog I wanted to adopt on their website and check in to make sure it was still at the shelter. This is Maple (previously Willow) and she is a sweetheart.

They didn't update Google maps with their hours so I got there at 6:02 (posted hours say open til 7). I told them I had driven an hour to get there and they said "How long has your pet been missing?" I said a few weeks, and they said "Then you can wait another day." This shelter also does not provide information on missing pets, and if you call, will not tell you if they found an animal that looks like yours, because it takes effort to do that. This shelter doesn't care about people or their animals. When I volunteered at the humane society we would do anything to get a pet into a good home. They didn't want to stay an extra 5 minutes after 6 PM so that they could save another pet from an overloaded shelter.

This place is awful. No one ever answers the phone EVER and that includes what they themselves call EMERGENCY DISPATCH. They care nothing about the animals, just the money they can bring in. I called once for a cat that had been hit right outside their building on 3500 south and after calling a dozen times and hitting the emergency dispatch number, some old lady answered. I said there is a cat right outside your building that someone just hit, she asked for the address, I said, it is RIGHT OUTSIDE YOUR BUILDING! She then told me there was nothing she could do without an address. So I then said, what is your address and she told me, I then that is the address of the dying cat. I drive by there every single day on my way to work and that cat was there for 3 days. Someone new needs to take over and actually run that place.

I have never been treated so poorly over the phone before. I was only asking about where I should take a cat I found and they were very rude. I can only imagine how they treat the animals or the people who choose to adopt from here. They should probably do periodic reviews of the employees who work there.

The staff was so friendly and helpful. Sad to see all the pets that are left behind by owners. The dog I was thinking of adopting was super cute and a little old. Only $20 to adopt! Hopefully soon I can convince my husband to adopt a pet. I will definitely be coming here again.

The staff was friendly and helpful. The cost was redicoulus. $25 impoud fee. I get that. Another $25 S/N cat deposit. I don't get that. ??? $15 Rabies Vacc. I didn't want that right now, but in order to get her out I had to get it. And then ANother $25 intact animal fee. I don't get that. Very unreasonable charges. The two stars are only because the staff was nice. The extra $50 charges are a rip off.

This place displays the most unprofessional staff and supervisors I've ever encountered. The staff and supervisors abuse their power to the tee. They seriously disgust me, very unfortunate we have these people who take a roll in the WVC community and abuse their power if it was some kind of game. They are not there for the animals, they are there to fine you, fine 1st offenders to the max, not being reasonable or understanding, all about the money, money, money. Read the reviews....it explains that this is a on going issue for the past 3 years with the same staff. I am boycotting this animal shelter they need a complete change in upper management. There solution is if you dont like it, vo to court, this is a sad sad place.

I brought my dog here to meet another dog I wanted...

I brought my dog here to meet another dog I wanted to adopt and it was such a terrible experience. The staff members know nothing about introducing dogs, posturing, etc. and they set them up for failure. The room for meet and greets is tiny and obviously two dogs (especially when both are rescues) are going to be tense and not mesh well in that room. I asked repeatedly to do a meet and greet outside and the girl told me she had other things to be doing. When I finally convinced her, she took us to a fenced area right next to a bunch of goats, so the dogs wouldn't even pay attention to each other there. A few minutes after we went outside the girl just stormed off with the dog and put her back in her crate and literally disappeared without a word to me. No one at reception said anything either and I was just left to assume that they weren't going to let me adopt the poor dog. It was so odd. Also, while we were outside she said to me, "This is why I don't have little dogs at my house." I get a little sick when I think about this experience and I can't believe animal shelter employees could be so rude and care so little about finding homes for the animals.

Tried for 3 days to adopt a dog that was available. Apparently that supervisor kathy was holding it for a friend or relative or worse, because the one lady said the dog was available and she cut her if saying it was still sick and hadn't been cleared yet. Found it they adopted it out right after i tried again on the second day. Came back for a 3rd day and it was gone. Kathy said they don't hold dogs for people to adopt. Yet reading the other reviews they do, or are supposed to. her obvious lies about the puppy still being sick and she can't adopt it it till it was better. . Subordinate already told me it was adoptable. How can someone like that be allowed to supervise pet adoptions?
She told me to call back the first day, she said that then wouldn't answer the phone. I went down personally and she wouldn't hold it for me and didn't allow me to adopt when he was clear to go. And this isn't the only the place i intend to go with this. That lady shouldn't be allowed to be in charge of a adoptions if she's holding them for friends or brokering the dogs. She's doing one or the other. After reading the rest of these reviews I'm more inclined to believe she's illegally selling them. Do you people ever check to in these people?!
Whatever she was doing i sincerely doubt it was legal or appropriate with her position.joi

In response to your response. I have a house, no violations of ANY KIND PERIOD! The dog was ready and she was deliberately hiding for someone else or doing something with it. Don't try and change it to try make yourselves look good. What she was doing was improper and you know it. That was the best you could come up with in 2 months?
By the way i did talk to her. She couldn't even give me the same story twice. Try again. And like i said. Mine's not the only complaint on here. Oh by the way, the humane society had no problem with me. I suggest, you take another look at your personnel.

Very frustrating policys! Staff is never very pleasant to deal with. Seems like they give you little to no information or are misleading. I have been calling and visiting the shelter for weeks, looking for a kid friendly dog for my family. Every time I have tried to meet with a specific dog they tell me he's on hold for such and such time. So i wait.. Call again on said date, they tell me he's now on hold for another day so try back the next day to see if he's been adopted, I call back and they give me a glimpse of hope saying that he's now available because the person who put a hold on him never came. I pack up the kids and when I get there (not even 45 minutes after speaking with them over the phone) they tell me that once again that same someone just put another hold on him. My poor 7 year old thinks we just might finally bring a dog home each time we go and it's always disappointing for him. I feel it's unfair to allow people to have such long and repeated holds on the animals when there are families that are ready & could possibly adopt them that very day. They won't even allow you to meet the animal to see if it's a good fit when they've been placed on hold, but you can't put a hold on the animal yourself unless all family members have met the animal... Which makes it impossible! I called to speak with an owner or manager, but have yet to hear back from anyone. I understand you have to abide by law, but these "holds" need to be done away with!

I hated the experience here I finally found the perfect dog. I brought my dog with me they got along perfectly.. I went to the counter to try and adopt her. They said I needed to bring my mortgage statement and every member of my household.. so i did got back at 5:30 and they said we couldn't do anything because the last hour you aren't allowed to see the animals.. WTH. What's the point of staying open till 6 if you really aren't open till 6?

Visiting and adopting from the shelter was a wonderful experience. The staff was really great, being both knowledgeable of the animals as well as aware and focused on their well-being. The facilities are all clean and information is clearly posted so you don t have to flounder as you look for a new baby to take home.

Almost 3 mos ago I adopted a Yorkie(Tonga-now Dexter) and he has been the best dog! I really lucked out being chosen to take him home on May 23rd. As for my experience with the staff and place in general, they seem a bit complacent in their jobs but the longer I waited to bring home my little guy, they sorta warmed up. I love my dog so much and he's been the best companion who loves being spoiled . I'll always remember this day as a 5 star experience.

I visit this shelter frequently and am always greeted warmly and feel welcome in their facility. The staff members are always very kind and you can tell that they genuinely care for each and every animal in the building. The shelter is always well maintained and always clean! I have never had a bad experience. Thank you to the front desk ladies- Lorraine, Sam and Sheryl for always being so great and willing to assist or teach me anything I may not know about!
