This museum is amazing; a beautiful look at the life of such a creative man! And the Nine Old Men Exhibit not only showcased the great art of those early Disney Animators but also gave a really interesting glimpse into their personal lives and how their personalities impacted their art.

I've grow up going to Disneyland and in fact, after high school, I moved to Orlando and worked at Walt Disney World even. When I came back to the Bay Area, I began teaching history and was asked to teach a Disney History class. This museum was our perfect field trip location. It walks through the life and trials of Walt Disney, you see his innovations, failures, highlights, struggles, family and friends who helped him along the way, and so much more. It covers his life from birth to death, Oswald to Mickey, trains in his backyard to Disneyland.
I have gone there more than five or six times, I go back again because there's always more to see, more to do, and new exhibits they bring in from time to time. It's a blast to take young and old there, though it is a lot of reading so maybe wait until your children have the attention span for that. I took middle schoolers and they loved it. My favorite exhibit there is the Disneyland model that's designed to be the ideal park (no backstage or extra buildings) of Walt's dreams. It's beautifully lit and painted. Lots of fun. Plus the museum docent who stands near it often had fun trivia to sweeten the moment of wonder.
Highly recommend checking it out. Do recommend bringing your own food though as it is expensive for not much in the museum cafe. Maybe pick up something from the city and then picnic before or after going in. Beautiful grassy areas with chairs overlooking the S.F. Bay right out front.
The Walt Disney Family Museum offered a unique look at the life of Walt Disney and into the company and movies that were produced during his lifetime. It is interesting to hear the different stories that's surrounded each other things that he worked on including the park Disneyland the various TV shows and all that he aspired to do.
Absolutely fantastic!!! So very interesting and very well presented. Significantly larger and more in- depth than we were expecting! I couldn't recommend it more
Fantastic museum focused on an iconic man. The goal of the museum seems to be to teach about the man, not the icon. The main museum tells his life story, with a large emphasis on the company he built with his brother. They also host special exhibitions, screen films, and conduct classes. The museum includes a gift shop and a small cafe. The average person should probably plan a few hours, but Disney geeks should plan on a half to a full day.
Many great historical pieces from Disney and original sketches from the first artists. My children and I had a great time. Their favorite part was the miniature replica of Disneyland and the animatronic parrot.
This museum was a nice surprise for me as I went there for lack of a better thing to do a Sunday Afternoon.
I strongly recommend going a Sunday, as there is a Giant picnic organized this day, with great food trucks.
You get a passionate introduction to Walt Disney's life. I did not know how much of an entrepreneur he was, in addition to the artist we all know. The museum clearly shows how this man knew to take the right decisions in the right time, and knew how to stick to his gut. I was surprised to see the museum (found by the Disney family if I am not mistaken) be somehow critical of Walt, and you can guess that he probably was not easy working with (or under). That being said you feel that you are here in Disney territory!
A cool place with really interesting documents and artifacts (the very first Mickey drawing, some Disney gadgets and so on) chronicling Walt Disney's (the person) life. Interesting stuff with some details about animation realism, sound effect, cartoons and propaganda, Disney world. I would have loved more engineering info with the multi plane camera and so on.
It's quite expensive at 20 dollars a ticket though so if you're not a huge Disney fan you might want to reconsider. (I went there for free through a member).
We went early during the weeks, no one was there!!! We got to spend as much time as we wanted taking as many pictures as we wanted. The workers are sooo nice!!! They stopped by here and there and showed us how to take the pictures and even took pictures for us. The upside down house is awesome too but it was hard to get ideas on how to take pictures. Before you go, look at other customers pictures to get ideas. We'll definitely be back!
Awesome place to find out about Walt Disney, the amazing person (as opposed to the Disney company; although both are very closely linked until Walt's death). Lots of original artifacts arranged in very informative and often interactive displays. The facilities are great too, in the gorgeous Presidio with unbeatable views of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. They also have a second building for special exhibits that are totally worth visiting. I am a member of this museum, so that should tell you what I think of it and it's worth!
Super good, one thing is a pity is that nothing is planned in other languages than English ... A big flat for children and people not speaking English ...
Great museum explaining the history behind Walt and the Disney company in the early days. Lots of interesting items including the earliest known sketches of Mickey Mouse. This museum is more aimed at adults than children. Especially young children would get bored rather quickly as it involves lots of reading and listening to recordings.
This place was great to learn about the history and backstory of Walt Disney. It doesn't look big from the outside, but there is a lot to look at. And average walk though 40-1.5 hours. Longer if you want to read everything and take your time. It's a good place to stop while you visit the persidio area.
Good place for Disney enthusiasts. Not recommended for very small children . Lots of people and very little space and plenty of things to read so my small ones got bored. I wanted to stay there forever though .
This museum is far more technical than you would think. Appearance can be decieving; buried in this military building is a deep data dive into Walt Disney and his world. Easy to spend 4 hours and could be all day if you deep dive into every exhibit. Takeaway? He went for broke, always, and always, always, banked it on the story.
The place is very welcoming, and always didactic, the museum has everything, tells us how the world of children began, who has an inner child should come to enjoy this place ..
An amazing museum I have visited many times. The exhibits focus in Walt as an artist, inventor, and man. If you have time stay for a class, lecture, or movie downstairs.
Between Walt's story, the story of Disney films, the story of the technical work that went into the films, and then the story of Disneyland, this place is awesome. Then there are also the adult and kid courses in animation, and the reviews of classic Disney films in the theatre. San Francisco is so lucky to have this.
The museum starts off kinda slow, and then you get to the point with the Disneyland exhibits and it is really intricate. The cafe stops serving food early and the staff weren't friendly. But the exhibits are very well done
I don't know why this says it is great for kids, because it is absolutely not. It is quite dry. Lots of reading, more of a full (and I mean FULL) family history, than actual Walt Disney. I'm yawning remembering the time I spent in here.
Absolutely loved this museum! It introduces you to Walt Disney, how he became who he was. You will also get to meet the characters he created and the story behind each of them. Great way to spend the day. There is a fee to get in. FYI.
A place every Disney fan should visit. Located in the Presidio which is walking distance from the Golden Gate Bridge the museum is an enjoyable place to spend several hours. The museum tells the story of the life of Walt Disney from his simple beginnings to his most unlikely of successes.
Like his life the exhibits start simple and grow in complexity as you follow the chronology of his life. Even the path through the museum winds more and more until reaching an amazing symphony of sight and sound culminating with some of his most well known accomplishments.
The dazzling displays become almost overwhelming and you feel like you are part of the excitement in a room filled with an array of products from Walt s vivid imagination. Then everything suddenly stops. The walkway narrows. Walt Disney has died.
It would be difficult to leave without a teardrop in your eye and an understanding of what Walt Disney s Legacy is. An emotional experience.
The museum tells a wonderful story of a man who dared to dream bigger than anyone and had the courage and persistence to make those dreams a reality.
Comprehensive look at the life and accomplishments of Walt Disney. Thousands of items of Disney memorabilia. Lots of film shorts from every era. A must see for every Disney fan.
Learn about the man behind the mouse and the giant mega corporation that owns your hopes and dreams! See the American that lived the Hollywood dream and see the lessons he learned from his multiple blunders.
Interesting but crowded, and like everything Disney, it costs TWICE as much as it should. Should a Disney promotional tool cost more than the world's best museums?
