Although the museum can get very busy, it is an impressive collection of Vincent's work. The audioguides are recommended as they delve into the art pieces and provide background and context. We visited the exhibition on at the time - Hockney and Van Gogh and really enjoyed it.
I cannot put into words how wonderful this was. Seeing Van Gogh's art in person was mesmerizing. However, be prepared to never be able to appreciate a print or replica of his art again after seeing the real thing. (My pic is of one of the replicas in the museum, as you can't take photos of the actual pieces)
I'm so happy that I managed to get sometime to visit this gem of a place. I've found even more respect for Van Gogh and Amsterdam. What a wonderful place with Van Gogh's masterpieces one after other. It's a must visit place if you're in Amsterdam. You've to visit and watch details of the paintings under the light and at its original size to fully appreciate the talent. I spent 5 minutes just looking at the details of Landscape painting and there are so many unique piece pieces of art there. 3 hours is good time to get the most out of this place.
Nice museum and a must see if you like painting. A very good and emotional description of Van Gogh life story. Ensure to buy tickets online to save time.
Worth a visit. Plan on spending 2-4 hours here. If you have kids you can take out a "treasure box" for free. Great museum.
Great museum to visit. Famous works and his biography about Van Gogh. Recommend to book the ticket in advance, and get there in time of your slot. The museum not allow to take photos inside.
Really comprehensive museum showcasing the life of Van Gogh and his many works. Cloak room available and staff are so friendly. Would definitely recommend getting the audio guide for 5 more as it really provides so much more insights to the works and additional features!
This is an amazing museum, I will recommend you to rent the audio (5 ) is worth it if you want to keep learning about Van Gogh. Also, try to be early in the morning. We booked at 9:00 am when the museum opens and there was not to many people so you can enjoy it. You will spend at least 3 hours here.
Lots of good paintings, most by van gogh, some by contemporaries
Very Good and organized place. Staff always very nice and supportive.
Brilliant experience. Get into the mind of Vincent, see his inspirations etc
Huge collection of most of Van Gogh's works are displayed. Got to know a lot about the artist himself and his personality going through his paintings, his correspondence to his brother Theo by his letters. My personal favorites are the Almond Blossom, Irises, Cypresses and Two Women, Wheat field with a Reaper. Many of his drawings and sketches are exhibited as well. However, the most famous Starry Night is with MOMA at NY.
Everything you need to know about the life of the great painter is in this place, including a lot of his work on painting and drawing. Anyone interested in arts should visit this place. Hugely recommend.
The structure is very cool, the inside is covered by a multitude of beautiful and interesting paintings. Good place to visit.
Mustsee museum. A lot of his classic works are on display here, this time next to Hockney, a more contemporary artist. Be prepared and make reservations, because the daily quotum is reached several weeks in advance. Museum shop is okay-ish, nothing special. Forget parking, take a tram to the museum.
Beautiful building to visit. Very spacious, so even when the museum is busy it still felt manageable. Displays are great. Staff very friendly.
It was bigger than expected with a good variety of things. I liked the sunflowers exhibition with rooms that set a nice mood.
It was also very cool they had a lot if information on Van Gogh's life printed on the walls in both Dutch and English. :)
SERIOUSLY?! What's not to love?! But just like Anne Frank House, you have to reserve tickets ahead of time!! Go online to do this in advance, as the museum sells out fast!!! I was beyond blessed, as a lady came up to me and asked if I was alone and gave me one of her resz (a person in her party became ill) so I got the reservation!!! Its not cheap to enter, I believe it was $25 USD or more and then of course I bought a bunch of stuff from the gift shop, but beyond worth it!! The audio tour makes you feel like Van Gogh directed the time line himself and really entrenches you to farm land during that time. A great great museum and wonderful way to spend the day!! Dont miss it if possible!!
Amazing experience, must see if you're a tourist in Amsterdam just make sure you book/buy your ticket online beforehand
The best way to do this museum is book a timed ticket for when they open and go straight to the top floor. It s quiet and you can enjoy Van Goghs later work in peace.
This is an excellent museum covering Van Goghs progression as an artist, and it includes works by his contemporaries. Incredibly comprehensive and spacious, even when crowded.
Was a good experience but ti kets sell put quite quickly. We tried to go in on the 25th and they were out of tickets and it was not advertised anywhere. Thankfully we were able to go the next day.
A dream come true to be able to see in real life Vincent's masterpieces that I only saw in my art books. The musem is very minimal and detailed. From his life, death, to his inspirations, family tree, letters written and his closest friends. I'm so glad I got to see it even when I was high. I'm just disappointed to find out that Starry Night is in New York.
Mostly easy to move around and see the paintings. Timed entry helped with the crowds.
It was pretty cool! Awesome artwork, great explanations and historical background, along with some fun stations to see how the painting feels, what it would smell like, & other stuff like looking through a microscope at the tiny brushstrokes, and some sand stuck in a painting.
Wonderful museum to visit. Great and famous works by Van Gogh and other artists on display. No photography allowed. Hoped to have seen Starry Night and then realized it s on display in New York but various wheat field paintings, the painting of the potato eaters, etc., made up for the absence of this painting. Don t show up at museum to purchase tickets - have to purchase online or via tour company, etc., but online purchasing was simple and easy. Highly recommend everyone visit this museum. Proximity to Concert Gebouw, Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum and Vondel Park makes this area a great palace to visit.
Worth a visit. I'm a big " fan" of the man. However, now that I've seen so many of his self portraits, I'm not surprised he had mental health issues. He must have spent half his life looking in a mirror
Absolutely amazing museum dedicated to my favorite artist! I loved seeing many of Van Goghs works in one place while learning more about his as an artist and a person.
They have built an amazing experience. Be sure to get the audio guide. So worth it
Van Gogh is a famous artist and this is a great chance to see his artworks and to know about his life.
Amazing Museum with many good services inside.
Don t forget to book your ticket online.
Good museum a little busy
a
Beautiful museum, very well agenced, allows us to feel really close to Van Gogh.
The space is well used, the light is perfect, nothing was darkening the experience. The collection repartition on different levels, following the period and life of Vincent, is in my opinion a great idea.
I remember at the end of the first floor having felt scared to have seen the major part of it. I was relieved and excited when I saw that there was much more to come.
The place wasn't crowded (I was there for more than 4 hours from 9 to 1 during the week), enough space to move around.
I hesitated when buying the audio guide. I must say it's a real experience with the sounds, it highlights some of the paintings so well by bringing you intesting details. I wish there was numbers to the wrote letters too.
The unique remark I could do is that there wasn't many night paintings (if not at all). We couldn't see some starry skies, and we know how much Van Gogh loves them.
Thank you Vincent (and Vincent Willem).
A must see if you've never been. Book well in advance to secure your visit, free entry with I Am Amsterdam Citycard. Multimedia guide is essential and good value.
Great Audioguide!!! Amazing to go through this gorgeous exhibition. But do not got there after 11.30... It was SO full. ^^ But do not miss it. Totally worth to be seen
Enjoyed this. Went last year, dissappointed that they did not mention the most famous painting was missing before we brought tickets at the front desk but it was a good experience and much bigger than I expected. Would certainly recommend it to anyone visiting Amsterdam. I am no art expert but I seriously appreciated the work.
Fantastic experience: immerse into Van Gogh s life and discover his masterpieces along the journey. A must do.
Be aware- Bag check required- we had to leave our purses which we were NOT happy about. They were not allowed per museum standards, Michael Kors backpack style purse was not allowed in. Wish we had known, we would have brought smaller/different purses. We were prepared for a long day of city exploring. Just a heads up for everyone else
I wasn't a huge Van Gogh fan and thought that with limited time and what seems like endless museums, that I would skip this. Glad I didn't! His work is obviously impressive, but I was really touched by his letters to his brother and the stories about his life.
If you love Van Gogh then it s a muse visit. If you think that he s overrated as he is, the museum appears just as overrated, which it is. Reijksmuseum down the street is Where you find real art.
I mean, it s Van Gogh, the art is going to be great. The museum is generally well laid out, but they need to restrict entrance more than they already do. The museum gets packed with tourists, many of whom have deplorable museum etiquette. The audio guide for the permanent collection is worth it for the casual museum goer, but not for the art enthusiast, as it s nothing but common information. The Japan and Van Gogh exhibit currently running is excellent, and all guests should get the audio guide for this exhibit as it s full of interesting tidbits. Visit off-season if you can.
We toured the Van Gogh Museum that is dedicated to the works of Vincent van Gogh and other contemporaries. It was nice to see originals of many of his works that you normally see in books. His style was unique with his heavy use of paint such as is shown in his Sunflowers work of art. We visited here last summer ago and was terribly busy in many cases making it hard to stand and observe and ponder his works.1
The museum is amazing. It's two buildings, each with souvenir shops featuring, of course, Van Gogh works. I had the chance to see an exhibition of Van Gogh works that were influenced by japanese paintings. The main museum has almost all of Van Gogh's main paintings, including the sunflowers one, where there were many people standing in front of it. Unfortunately the Stary Night painting is in New York. The staff there were very nice, too. I wanna go again.
Worth to learn about this history of van Gogh. The souvenir shop has alot to offer. Best to go in the early morning. Not crowded. The audio guide is also worth it. NVR use the iamsterdam card as you have to q to get in compare if you buy the ticket you get fast entry
The van Gogh museum is of course a classic to go to whilst you're in Amsterdam. Make sure you have a booking though, because when I went to get tickets I saw people turned away because it was sold out already. It is an INCREDIBLY popular museum and so it makes sense to plan before you go. I had a museum card which allows you to go in whenever so keep that in mind if you're going to many museums because its great value for money. Anyway, once we got inside it was packed with people. All of the pictures had around 15 people around them on average, so if you're not a fan of queuing for picture viewing, then you might find it quite frustrating. I got in for free with the card so I didn't have the same level of annoyance as others who paid full price to get in which I could understand. The paintings are amazing of course and displayed in a nice way level by level and had a nice amount of detail in each placard next to them. Overall I loved the paintings and the history but I found the disorganisation to get in and the lack of info that it can be sold out at around 2pm not nice for the average museum visitor. Check it out though, van Gogh was amazingly talented and his artwork stands the test of time.
definitely worth a while if you wish to see some of VG paintings in person and also learn something about his life. they also have very nice cafeteria/restaurant and quite nice gift shop with wide variety of gifts, pencils, notebooks and much more. don't forget to book your time slot.
Have been there 2 times already and would definitely go again. Nothing bad to say about the museum! Definitely the best I have ever been to.
Nice building itself near all the main museums. However, with paintings by van Gogh only.
Good experience and learned a lot about van gogh's life and work
You can buy tickets only online.
The guide information it's cool. The pieces of art are very good too.
It is an amazing place
To avoid queues they make you buy online. It's got limited no of people entry. Great museum avoid long queues that start early morning.
Much better than I was expecting. The story of his life was interesting as well as moving and the art was excellent. I was happy to find a couple of Monet's within the collection I was not expecting to see.
Bit pricey though ( 19pp).
As usual the Van Gogh museum was hugely inspirational. Friday with Vincent is awesome.
What an artist ! A great exhibition, that is a must to see
The audio guide had an "express" and an "in-depth" mode - the express mode was supposed to take 45 minutes which I really appreciated because I never know what to focus on at a museum/gallery when there is too much to see.
This place masterfully tells the story of a great artist; tragic, but beautiful. Well done!
Some nice works, but it really shamelessly capitalizes on Van Gogh and tries to stretch everything really thin. Be aware there are no photos allowed.
The Van Gogh Museum is worth it. Read these reviews for tips about how to do it (schedule online, plan for four hours or more [do more], get the audio tour, no pictures, etc) and leave some time for the gift shop. Then, for funsies watch the doctor who episode about van gogh when you get back to your hotel.
Largest museum of van Gogh's I've seen. Very well done
Have to get audio guide machine or you may waste your time to stay in the museum. The paintings are great. I think I need not to mention the paintings.
For the security guards, they are quite rude.
Photos an videos are not allowed. But it really gave me a chance to appreaciate the art itself. Could've been nice if the song "Vincent can be heard in the background so you can be really melancholic
AMAZING. Better buy your tickets online so you doesn't have to wait outside on the rain. But you have to be very punctual
Loved it! We got in by chance though, you need to book your tickets pretty far in advance online otherwise you probably won't be able to get in. A very interesting and informative exhibit, with much more information than I expected in addition to the artwork itself.
The exact level of amazing can t be put into words definitely worth a visit.
Great collection, you can see almost everything from van gogh except starry night!
I wasn't impressed. I am a huge Van Gogh fan but this museum just put me right off. On waiting ages to enter we were instructed we had to leave everything including our jackets at the cloak room. This was yet another huge line to wait in before even getting into the museum.
The collection was some van Gogh but much was inspired by him so wasn't as good. Much of his famous work was missing also.
When in Amsterdam I would avoid this museum as it's expensive and long waiting for little. Try other local museums
No pictures to ad for tis review as your not allowed to have your phone on you.
Very busy and not spacious. No time to look at a painting in peace because you might get pushed to the next one by a crowd. Even though van Goghs paintings are mind blowing, I didn't really get the chance to experience that in the museum. Taking pictures of the artwork is also not allowed, when you do try to take a picture you might get kicked out by security. All of this doesn't make for an enjoyable visit. Audio tour didn't work well and often gave information unrelated to the artwork.
So in conclusion: Van Gogh is a master painter, but the musuem might no be the place to see it. The Rijksmuseum has some works by him as well, that you can appreciate a bit better in their athmosphere.
I have to admit....i'm not really interested in art, but this museum is very interesting and has a huge amount of paintings from Van Gogh which you can have a look at them... the only thing you can't, is taking photos of the paintings.
Van Gogh is my favorite painter.
I felt so touched after I visited the museum.
You can experience a whole journey of his life and massive amount of his works.
All Van Gogh works, drawings and letters!! Amazing time lines and history through out. Great lay out and easy access to the various works. Huge draw back was the no photography rule!! Not well enforced and very obsolete as people were still taking pictures, myself included. Would rate 5 stars if the no photography rule went away.
A largely comprehensive look at the life and works of Vincent Van Gogh. Having never made a proper study of the man, this was an incredible learning experience for me, as there is an immense amount of detail available on his entire life. I especially enjoyed seeing the collected letters he wrote to his brother and how his relationships influenced his works. For anyone who is even mildly interested in the man, I would highly recommend this museum.
Beautiful museum and amazing art pieces (I love van Gogh).
It can be quite crowded though, and this can make the experience less pleasant.
Wonderful museum! Incredibly busy, definitely buy tickets online in advance. Would recommend to spend 5EUR extra for the guided audio, I found it to be informative!
I previously saw Vincent's work a few years ago when the exhibtion was decanted for a refurb of the museum we came here for my mum's first visit she loved the experience of seeing all of Vincent's life. She said the visit will stay with her for the rest of her life.
The building itself is easy to get around. We bought tickets online before arriving which meant no queuing. You can't have backpacks but they have a free and easy checking in and out process.
We paid extra for the audio/multimedia headset which was easy to work...even my mum figured it out!
Lovely cafe and museum shops also with something for everyone.
The true star is the art work. I've long been a Vincent fan so it was great to come and see his works back in their rightful place. I would highly recommend to everyone even non art lovers. It's something all show experience.
I love his art and for me was really unbelievable how his life really was
Amazing! Really educational and has so much art work that Van Gogh did throughout his life. Would recommend to go make sure to get your tickets ahead of time!
Definitely rent the headphones for the assisted tour - especially if you are limited in time.
Art is wonderful, as expected. Floor plan is confusing, wastes space.
Very large exhibit with a detailed look into Van Gogh's life in and outside of his art. Looking at his paintings, his home life, family and friends and his inspirations. Highly detailed notes for each piece and pieces from other artist's collections too. Lifts and wheelchair accessible entrance. Low-Mid Covid safety with limited sanitizers available and masks not compulsory. In fact, you have to take your mask off before you enter for the cameras. But can wear one when inside. Takes aproximately 2 hours.
Unfortunately, I could not give more than 4 stars as on the day I visited they had closed off a large part of the gallery. I was only informed of this once I had already paid the not cheap cost of a ticket and been round half the gallery. If I had known, I would have delayed my visit. Quite inexcusable to not inform people before they purchase a ticket.
If you search fun and exiting things, if you are a seeker of adventures this place isn't for you. But for those who is in love of sharing painters creativity and interested in listening some important facts about his life you will enjoy time there.
Modern building in The Museplein area featuring Van Gogh's painting, letters, had a nice exhibition inspired in the Dreams and Sunflowers, be ready to spend at least 2 hrs in there! Easy walking to the other museums in the park!
