History
Uwajimaya was founded in 1928 by Fujimatsu Moriguchi as a small grocery store in Tacoma's Japantown. The store was named after his hometown of Uwajima in Japan. Over time, the store grew into a larger market that offered not only Japanese products but also other Asian goods.
In 1942, during World War II, Fujimatsu Moriguchi and his family were forced to leave their home and business due to Executive Order 9066 which authorized the internment of Japanese Americans living on the West Coast. After spending three years at an internment camp in Idaho with his family, Fujimatsu returned to Tacoma where he rebuilt his business from scratch.
