The Tower of London, officially Her Majesty's Roya...

The Tower of London, officially Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, is a historic castle located on the north bank of the River Thames in central London. It lies within the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, which is separated from the eastern edge of the square mile of the City of London by the open space known as Tower Hill. It was founded towards the end of 1066 as part of the Norman Conquest of England. The White Tower, which gives the entire castle its name, was built by William the Conqueror in 1078 and was a resented symbol of oppression, inflicted upon London by the new ruling elite. The castle was used as a prison from 1100 (Ranulf Flambard) until 1952 (Kray twins), although that was not its primary purpose. A grand palace early in its history, it served as a royal residence. As a whole, the Tower is a complex of several buildings set within two concentric rings of defensive walls and a moat. There were several phases of expansion, mainly under kings Richard I, Henry III, and Edward I in the 12th and 13th centuries. The general layout established by the late 13th century remains despite later activity on the site.

Best to purchase your tickets online and print them and arrive 30 mins before opening time (there will be a queue already). The queue to the entrance moves fairly quick, we waited around 25-30 minutes after arriving at opening time (10am on Monday). I've been advised to head straight to the Crown jewels as soon as you walk in and it worked, we walked in without a queue, spent around 45 minutes in and when we walked out there was already more than 80 people queueing. Overall visiting every tower and building inside took us just under 4 hours. Bear in mind there's lots of stairs and uneven surfaces when you visit.

Stunning place, a little scary in some areas, a very ancient fortress, which was previously jailed and executions took place in droves, try not to imagine since they feel unpleasant, stroll around the building is exceptionally stunning

Love love love the Tower of London! We spent over 5 hours here and could have spent more time. I did except it to be more torture-focused but turns out it wasn't haha. The Crown Jewels were amazing - do this first!!! We walked straight in and had plenty of time up close to the jewels. By noon the line was huge! I hope this review and photos will helpful for you all guys do like for my little work thank you

Best place I've been to in ages. I didn't realise how interesting I would find it. Lots of interesting facts which are all in short simple sentences. The torture chamber was a bit grim but watching the ravens and finding out their names was fun.

Wasn't that impressed with the tower of London. It's certainly not bad but it isn't also a full day visit as there isn't a lot there in my opinion (others may disagree with me). I understand the price of entry as the up keep is expensive but again I expected a little more from my ticket. The queue for the crown jewels was long do be warned. Certainly worth a visit if you are into history/story of London but if you are unsure, I think you can find alternatives in the same area.

Great experience, I have to say that I couldn't find anything bad to say about the premises, it was a good place to revisit on any occasion.
This man looks forward to returning to the premises on a visit in the near future.

The on site Beefeater's on the premises at the time of my visit to the premises were absolutely amazing, and I have to say that nothing was to much trouble for the staff.

Well worth a prolonged revisit on any occasion.

My number one highlight during my stay in London. Culture, history, and atmosphere. It had so much to offer we spent a whole day just exploring the place. However, the weather was not on our side during our visit. The roleplays which happened occasionally were so fun to watch. There was so much going on that it would take another 500 words to describe everything.

Also those mini-games in the tower.... I nailed them.

If you are ever in London take the chance and visit it. I'm going to rate this 7 ravens out of 7.

A very good place for a family. My kids does not speak English so we watched some great guided tours on YouTube and could tell the kids most of the good stuff. Do that and you have a great day for the whole family. Check the first as the queue becomes insane in the afternoon.

Great set up for kids and adults alike. Really interesting and we were impressed with how much of the buildings were open and accessible to walk around. Queues for the crown jewels we're well managed and moved quickly. Beefeaters and staff were friendly and helpful. We didn't do a tour as our 8-year-old just wanted to wander but there were several options to choose from if you wanted a guided experience. Toilets were adequate given that it was a very busy day. Definitely recommend buying entrance ticket in advance to walk straight in.

Halberds to SA 87's. William the Conqueror to The Kray Twins pretty much everything from the last time mainland England was invaded to today.
Plus the crown jewels, and The Ceremony of the Keys

Nothing less than A W E S O M E!! Such a lovely architectural masterpiece!!! Was very fortunate that the day we visited was a sunny day!! Wanted to visit this place as well. But we had very limited time to do so. Will surely make it the next time we visit London. Such a lovely place... Highly recommended!!

Great attraction to visit in London. Well sign posted and maintained to a high standard, adding colour to the detailed, but not over powering, historical background laid out throughout the grounds. It's the first thing on my list when taking friends to visit sites in London.

An absolute must see if you have the time. Allow at least three hours to really take in the history of it all. I'd recommend taking one of the tours with the beefeaters. They are so wonderful at explaining the history.

Loved the self guided tour. Don't let the crowds put you off, the history of the site is worth it. Only had to wait a few minutes to see one particular part of the tower which was one of the towers, which was great.

Decent experience. Crown jewels and the tour were highlights. Not quite as interesting as I'd hoped - would have liked to have seen more audiovisuals and more on the ancient captives and torture !

Okay, here's the scoop - they should really make it clear that the Tower of London is a FORTRESS!!! The epicness of this place cannot be understated. Tower implies one tall stone structure - this is so much more. BIGGEST TIP: take the tour. The Yeoman Warders are not just some clowns dressed up in costumes. These gentlemen are military veterans (decorated and of rank) who know the history of the Tower inside and out. They guide you back through history as they take you on a tour of the place. The stories are incredible. This was the best thing I did in London out of all of my trips. You won't regret it.

Amazing historical site to visit while in London. So much history here and many artifacts to view in the different buildings. Be sure to not leave without seeing the Crown Jewels or the site where Henry the VIII's wives lost their heads.

It's certainly worth the time to see the crown jewels. We got in early morning and were lucky not to have to queue. After that the line is huuuuge, and on one of the hottest days of the year.

They say the yeoman tour is good, but there were like 100 people following him around and it was too hot.

Seriously if you only have time for 1 thing in London this should be it. The stories are gruesome... The jewels are sparkly and the weapons are fascinating. Very kid friendly with lots of hands on activities. Also the kids meals in the cafe are quite well priced.

From the outside, it looks great. Paying for a ticket to go inside is not worth it. Every room inside is filled with replicas and drawings. The only thing worth a visit is the Jewel Room.

Everyone knows how great of place it is, but the audio tour was great. It was the best one out of the museums we went to in London. It was turning on as you walk in in the new area, it had great information. It was definitely worth the money. a must in London.

A lot of history in one place! Admission is pricey so plan to stay the day if you want to absorb all the information. There is a line to see the Crown Jewels - amazing. Can take a guided tour or your own walking tour and read the presentations.

An interesting visit. The buildings are beautiful, well maintained. Not as much to see as id imagined, alot of items are not original, they state they may be similar to those used or originals mysteriously disappeared etc.. I think for the cost there isn't what you'd expect, but definitely a great attraction if you're wanting to see Londons famous buildings

One of London's landmarks, full of history, pride and tradition. If you ever come to London I guess this is a compulsory stop. Allow yourself 3 to 4 hours to walk along the whole complex.

If you get a National rail ticket x2 you get half price entry min 2 people. There is a station 10min walk so its easy. Opens at 1030 and starts to close at 1630. Don't arrive late at the tour is 45min then there is a lot more to see... You really need atlas half a day in... Probably a full day in peak season. Great information and exibits, the Crown Jewels are amazing but remember there is much much more. Do the tour its free! Cafes and food inside... About the same price as the general area.

Awesome historical place. Loved the Yeoman tour. Used the audioguide which was helpful. So neat to see items hundreds of years old. It rained much of time we were there but can go inside White Tower or Royal Jewels to stay dry for a bit.

Built around 1150s, takes about 4.5 hours to see the whole place, though I would recommend about 5 hours. Recommend taking the Beef Eaters/Yeomans tour (45 mins) where you get a nice briefing of the history of the Castle and wander leisurely through the castle. Salient features of interest in the Castle
1. Crowns Jewels - Fantastic collection needs about 45 mins -1 hour to see it in entirety.
2. White Tower (few stories to climb) with the Armory on top
3. Dungeons (with Torture chambers)
4. couple more towers that were used as prisons
5. Walk around the Castle walls and outside
6. Raven house !
Plenty of history (bloody), do plan spending 5 hours, recommend buying the ticket online (you could spend as much as 20 mins in the queue for tickets). There is a Cafe inside

The guide tour was great, he had great storytelling, and the crown jewels were fascinating to see. The interior got modified a bit too much though, would have loved to see more replicas of the original living quarters.

Another of the must see places in London. We got our tickets on-line and collected on the day. Got there not long after it opened, the queues were not too bad.
The weather was very hot, but there are plenty of things to look at inside or in the shade.
Plenty of history to get through, as you would expect, but done in such a way as not to be too geeky.
Good day, plenty of walking and stairs so good footwear is advised.
Plenty of food places both inside and out and easy access to Tower Bridge.

I had been looking forward to visiting, got very giddy when we arrived only to be sorely disappointed. All the exhibits and information are woefully basic, so for a history buff this was not what I had hoped for. I had anticipated more on some of the tower's most famous prisoners (Anne Boleyn, Lady Jane Grey, Catherine Howard etc), but other than a monument in the area in which they died there was little to no reference made to the former queens. It was certainly not worth the costly ticket.
