The best university for distance education. They m...

The best university for distance education. They mainly specialise in agricultural courses but they have fairly good science facilities too with lecturers who are genuinely interested in their subjects. The science courses have intensive schools where distance education students arrive from all around the world to do a couple of weeks of practical assessments. I've heard that it's best not to stay in the on-campus accommodation if you're coming in for intensives because the on-campus students who are in holidays tend to make too much noise. I saw one student who dropped out of a science unit during intensives just because he couldn't get enough sleep in the on-campus accommodation. So during the intensives, try to book in at one of the caravan parks in the area and figure out how to commute in. Finding a parking spot can be problematic sometimes too so leave some extra time to walk to class. Also be prepared to catch the flu during intensives - happens every year with that many people arriving from around the world. So stock up on flu medication.
The computing building looks interesting and I believe most of the computing units don't have intensives meaning you can do the whole computing degree without setting foot on campus.
The library at this school is HUGE. I liked to study in the basement area that had a nice underground feel to it and was generally quieter than the other levels.
If you keep your eyes open you'll also see the occasional koala in the trees near the administration block and kangaroos on the path in from the carpark.

A great uni for distance education! I'm completing a Bachelor degree at a university in my town on-campus and studying a diploma online with UNE concurrently. They are so flexible and amazing with online learning. The lecturers respond quickly and are very helpful. I had to defer a UNE exam due to having placement at my on-campus university and they were more than happy to allow me to sit a deferred exam in the next trimester. Very happy so far. :)

I have been studying off campus for the past three years. UNE does a great job with distance delivery of lectures. I have found the Moodle sites great - the lecturers usually respond to my questions (and I have plenty) in a timely manner. Assignments are marked quickly.

The only reason I have not given 5 stars is because the colleges are no longer worth staying at for Intensive Schools - the food situation is now hopeless for students who have to fly in.

I attended this university during trimester 2 - 2019 as an exchange student coming from Italy. My experience at UNE was definitely positive and I would do it again if possible. Since my arrival the staff was kind and really interested in giving me an amazing stay at UNE. Over the trimester, when I had few doubts about my units and other things, Mr. McKinnon and Ms. Velez, working at UNE International Office, were always available to help me with all things I needed. In addition, I found impressive how lecturers and advisors are dedicated to help students when they have doubts or issues concerning a unit. I higly recommend UNE and all its amazing staff.

Studied my 2 year Master of Teaching (Secondary), 1 year Master of Arts and now going to start my Phd in 2016, all via distance education. Based on my experience, UNE are the leaders in distance education with plenty of support via forum discussions, unit resources and knowledgeable teachers.

These people are a joke. DO NOT bother to apply with UNE. They do not respond, they are rude, they are incompetent and you will waste days messing around with their incompetence. Seriously, go anywhere but here!!!

Having studied at many universities both in Australia and Overseas, the students services I experienced at UNE deserves five star rating from the time of enrollment until completion of my law degree. Many lecturers I had were students centric and had a great passion for what they taught and cared for students and a few unfortunately were ego centric. I don't think that can be completely avoided where ever one goes. Over and all , my experience at the faculty of law as an external student, and the efficient and friendly services I received from administrative staffs during my studies at the UNE is memorable and I am grateful. I highly recommend UNE law school for any prospective external students and their student services in my view are are exemplary. Thank you.

I have completed a Master's at the university with a higher than Distinction average. I cannot graduate because the Office of Professional Learning is incompetently administered and has not been able to finalise arrangements for my last placement. I anticipate at LEAST six months delay in graduation. I may have to abandon my studies altogether. The senior university administration needs to look closely at how the OPL is run, and whether those running it have the necessary administrative skills. Until this is addressed, I would avoid this university.

ENROLL JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE ELSE RATHER THAN HERE!

ENROLL JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE ELSE RATHER THAN HERE!
The rule changes are endless and retrospective. Prior learning and subjects studied elsewhere are not properly recognized. Get sick with a life threatening illness and they still take your money. Student administration pull you out of subjects mid-semester without notice and change your subjects around on your degrees without consultation. Don't do supervised work as your lecturer may take off for months and leave you stranded and not tell you when he comes back. This same lecturer will give you a mark but then take it back and leave you with a NI for your hundreds of hours of work - because he has changed his mind...
Don't believe the hype that there is work for teachers as this is completely false and is just a revenue raiser. There are tens of thousands of unemployed teachers and the administrative abuse has to be experienced to be believed.
I could write a book about UNE and its ruthless cut throat money mongering "ethics" .
I WILL MAKE IT MY LIFE'S WORK TO DO ALL I CAN TO CLOSE THIS ROTTEN UNIVERSITY DOWN.

University administration and executives have no respect for students. I was so excited to go to UNE after high school, but left after a year and a half because I chose not to deal with the administration anymore. I now tell everyone not to attend this university. If you would like to be respected as a student do not attend UNE.

The university have stopped listening to its students. Nearly no one wants to relocate the Drummond and Smith collegiate. But the university is adamant about doing it anyway because of profitability. Very similar to how no on-compass student wanted or likes having trimesters. But the university went and did anyway.

UNE is a tertiary institution who fails to consult with its student ( their main stakeholders) time after time. This time it is regarding the closure of Drummond and Smith College. They have dropped this bombshell on the college's students right before final exams- causing obvious added stress. The Member for the Northern Tablelands gave the university a plan to 12 months ago to facilitate changes to Robb College- which has had its college put on heritage listing and have had to move out due to the extensive heritage process. This plan could have been the golden solution. However UNE administration has its heart set on profiting from any area of the university specifically its residential system. #savedrummondandsmith

I have studied from WA for the last four years with UNE. All of my units provided recorded lectures with one of the last two in T2 of this year accessible with live video streaming. All of my lecturers have provided good to excellent support. Being the other side of the country I was worried about UNE but have to say my experience has been outstanding. I have studied in the UK and would say UNE out surpassed my other experiences.
I finished my degree this month and am very happy I studied with UNE.

The below statement was taken from the UNE website:
-----
"How does distance education work?

Instead of turning up to a lecture on-campus at a designated time, the course content is provided online for you to access when it suits you each week. It might be a podcast (recorded lecture), a set of readings, questions posed in a discussion board, an online quiz or a video. Students access this content through myUNE, which is UNE s online learning portal, on a platform called Moodle. Your lecturer will guide you through the unit with a weekly plan of study, as well as checking in on the discussion boards or forums. You can also communicate with teaching staff via email, online chat or the phone. All UNE units are presented online, but some also provide supplementary material in hard copy where necessary."
-----

In my experience I have never (ever) had a pod cast, recorded lecture, questions posed as a discussion or a video for any of my units and I'm currently studying an I.T. degree, if they can't get it right then good luck to the rest of the departments.... In my experience so far distance education at UNE is an utter joke, the material being taught is over 7 years old (in most cases) and delivered as a pdf each week (or sometimes as one document at the start of the course) so much for student / teacher interaction...

Honestly UNE advertises how good they are at distance education so how about they get serious about it and start providing recorded lectures (LIKE THEY SAY THEY DO), until this happens I highly recommend you steer clear from studying externally or you will inevitably regret it!

UNE is flexible and their on line resources are excellent, Ive now studied three degree with the University two at a masters level and apart from wishing I could attend in person have had an extremely positive experience. On learning is not an easy option, but sometimes the only option, so to have it delivered transparently with no bells and whistles is a great outcome.

Historic University, excellent staff, and exceptional students support. What it unique about it is that it retains its rural spirit and feel. It doesn't feel as modern in appearance but its developing quite rapidly. Spent about five years there and miss this beautiful village.

Pretty good. Very precise distance education machine that works. Not sure what on campus would be like, but distance was good. Surprised they aren't further up the academic ranks of Australian Universities though, I've studied at Monash, UNISA, and University of Western Sydney, UNE is up there in my opinion.

If you were from a small Pacific Island and came straight from the boat like me (lol), then I would definitely recommend UNE for you. The UNE is situated in a small country city where you can get almost anything. This is my second year doing Bachelor of Sustainability and so far so good. My lecturers are soo helpful and very flexible. To me it totally depends on how desperate and committed you are because everything will be different especially trying to understand the Aussie slangs and accent. But like i said it all boils down to your dedication and commitment. Oh, if you love footy and wants to past time playing, then there are few footy clubs that you can join and have fun playing with the 'palagis'

Any who first arrives at UNE can be forgiven for t...

Any who first arrives at UNE can be forgiven for thinking that the architects who designed the place deserves to be put to death, for the campus is basically divided into 2 parts,
i.e. the residential area in the south (where you will likely enter first as it is on the south side, closer to the town), where all of the colleges of are located (except Mary White college), and the main academic area (where Mary White is also located, and all of the academic building, e.g. Library, Lecture theatres e.t.c.).
Separating these two areas is a gruelling 20 minute, uphill walk towards the campus (on Elm St) past of all things, empty fields, kangaroo paddocks, and tennis courts, which obviously you will have to do every morning you stay.
There is a bus (costing $1.50), but, comes every hour only on Saturdays, and not during most of the afternoon, or at all on Sundays, and every half hour during weekdays, and virtually none at night after 5-6pm. The taxi service though is surprisingly good for a small town, if you don't mind paying about $15 a ride (Call 131 008 to hail one). If you are driving, parking I am told is tight during academic hours, in the late morning, but sufficient.
Parking here, like at all universities is enforced by the university and not free.
The campus basically shuts down at around 3pm, with virtually no food service, other than vending machines, generally the food is quite expensive (around $6-7 a burger, $8-9 a salad) and of average to poor quality, though they are renovating. There are basic facilities, such as a post office, ATMs, ever a hairdresser on the main campus as well.
All of the residential colleges are catered, basic food at a reasonable price during meal times (breakfast lunch and dinner) with snacks available in between. The exception is Wright Village, which provides a kitchen and is BYO.
Also there is quite limited wifi internet which is of note, given that it is a university. I have had no major problems with mobile phone coverage though (fortunate if you need to call a cab)
There is also a gym, and sports facility (football fields e.t.c.) which I am told are quite good and a reasonable price. There are also large parks which are quite well maintained and good for jogging and quite beautiful, especially during autumn.
The weather is quite cold due to the altitude, and occasionally snows at the height of winter, but can also be quite warm (30C+) during spring and summer.
My Advice? Drive if you can, for the facilities (food, public transport e.t.c.) are much poorer than an average university but relatively good in the main town centre (for a country town) if you need anything. Shops and restaurants in town are open quite reasonable hours, and is only about 10-15 minutes away by car or bus.

Dear Iman Farahbakhsh and all who are considering ...

Dear Iman Farahbakhsh and all who are considering Engineering at UNE,
I have no idea what you are talking about, I am 2/3 of the way through the degree and not once has sheep and cattle been brought up in any of my lectures, rather I have learnt key principles to Civil Engineering that include:
Concrete Design,
Structural Mechanic,
Engineering Dynamics,
Engineering Statics,
Fluid Mechanics,
Chemistry,
Physics,
Hydrology,
Surveying,
Introduction to Civil Infrastructure
and Sustainability of the environment.
I have also had the chance to do work placement with a local Council, and a local Consulting Engineering Firm, during this experience I have been able to apply knowledge that I have learnt through the Engineering Technology Degree, that otherwise I would have no clue.
Yes the cohort is very small but that allows for more individual time with the Lecturers and other students doing the same degree.

In terms of your statement of having to repeat 8 units, I am not sure what Uni that you articulated to, but it states in the Course outline that it is a smooth transition into the USQ Bachelor of Engineering (Civil).
So therefore I feel if you actually put more time into the course and researched into what a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil/Environmental Major) actually is then you would not be leaving such a negative review.

On another note, the degree has been accredited by Engineers Australia who have reviewed the degree and deemed it fit as a suitable 3 Year Engineering Degree.

I love this degree, and recommend it to any person wanting to study Engineering Technology in a regional town.

Cheers
