It's a great venue in the heart of Newcastle. So not rating based on shows but on Venue. The only reason I don't rate 5 is due to the relative high prices still attached to restricted visibility seats of which there are many especially at the back of the stalls. Row P and beyond. Saw Saturday night fever in row R and still had to crane tour neck a bit at times to see.

I go to the Theatre Royal 5/6 times a year - lovely theatre but Oh dear, the seats are so uncomfortable. despite being new and plenty of leg room I am really stiff when I get up to go home.On Thursday I was there to see RSC, and having been there on the Saturday night also, I took a cushion. but it wasn't entirely helpful not being big enough. I'm there again on 19th will take a bigger cushion! .

Wow! Fantastic!

Wow! Fantastic!
The best stage-play I ve ever seen at the Theatre Royal. A fabulous night out a brilliant production of Frederick Knott s classic thriller Dial M For Murder.

This fantastic production did the impossible - the brilliant fight choreography by Philip d Orleans of the murderous fight between Sheila/Margo Wendice and Captain Lesgate surpassed that of the Hitchcock film. The fight scene with stunning sound effects was the most dramatic stage scenes I ve ever seen.

Barefoot and in just her semi-translucent nightgown, Sheila Wendice gets thrown around over desk, chair and sofa in a tremendous struggle as she fights for her life - escapes the first strangulation attempt - but then is caught again by Lesgate s lethal scarf tight around her throat - violently choking her, in an astonishing well staged fight to the death.

The entire production was outstanding. The play was splendidly and cleverly directed by Lucy Bailey with magnificent performances by the lovely Kelly Hotten, Daniel Betts, Christopher Timothy, Robert Perkins and Philip Cairns. I thought this play and production surpassed that of the excellent An Inspector Calls and The Mousetrap. Dial M For Murder deserves to win many awards. Thank you, Theatre Royal for an immensely enjoyable night out.

This was thrilling Theatre at its very best. I d love to see it again.

I love this theatre. Did a play with the Royal Shakespeare Company when I was young and thoroughly enjoyed being on the stage and in the audience. I hope it continues to do well and be invested in. A Jem of Newcastle for sure.
