What a wonderful reception we had as the Jean Calvert Jazz Trio entertained a very attentive audience at the Woodlands tonight. The room was full and they stayed until the last note, and then wanted to talk, hug and kiss us! Here's hoping to see you guys again soon!

We moved into our Villa mid-April, and because of the constraints imposed as a result of the coronavirus, our introduction to all that the Woodlands has to offer has been very much limited. We are absolutely satisfied with our Villa! It is spacious, seemingly well-constructed, very bright and clearly designed to accommodate the lifestyle of people of our age and stage. The Woodlands staff and contractor have both been very responsive in addressing our punch-list and other related requests.
We have recently been able to have dinner with other Villa residents at the Carriage House , wearing masks and keeping appropriate social distancing. As a consequence we have been able to meet, at least on a limited basis, a number of our neighbors each of who appear to be very pleasant. We are looking forward to having the opportunity get to know our neighbors better socially, as conditions permit. We would be remiss if we didn t comment on the quality and quantity of our meals, which under the circumstances have been wonderful. The Furman catering staff deserves a special shout out.
One of the features which drew us to the Woodlands was its proximity to and relationship with Furman University. Obviously, we have not yet had access to the Furman facilities which has been shut down as a result of the pandemic, but we both participated in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute during the summer semester. There was a wide selection of classes to choose from. The classes were held via Zoom and were both interesting and instructive. We are both looking forward to the fall semester, and to the day when we can have access to the campus.
This was our second visit to the Woodlands, and we were just as impressed this time as we were last time. Angela Hecker , director of marketing, spent a lot of time answering our questions and was extremely articulate and helpful. We also were able to visit independent apartments and interact with the occupants, who seemed very positive about their entire experience at the Woodlands. We also enjoyed a delicious lunch in the very pleasant surroundings of the dining room. All in all it was a very positive experience.
The Woodlands is full of wonderful and friendly residents. I befriended many of them during my 4 years there, and developed a relationship with some of the sweetest people. With so many wonderful and interesting residents, it is a shame that the work environment is unprofessional and the upper management is highly dysfunctional.
During my 4 years as a server in The Woodlands Dining Room, I was treated disrespectfully by other servers, cooks, and especially management. The management was lazy and ineffective. The turnover rate in the kitchen is outrageous largely due to the management, but also owing to the generally unprofessional attitude of many of the employees. Management on all levels were ineffective and dismissive of reports from employees about problems that arose in the kitchen. One server in Assisted Living was reported for verbal abuse to residents a large number of times before any disciplinary action was taken.
Women especially were treated disrespectfully in my time there, having to endure rude and sexist comments from many of the male cooks. Female cooks were scarce, and from what I've been told, paid less than many of their male counterparts. Shortly before my time at The Woodlands ended, I was horrified to find out that a single male server was paid a significantly higher hourly wage than any of the other female servers, including a female server that had been there for almost 10 years. Favoritism, not merit, played an enormous role in who was promoted or given a raise. Over my 4 years there, my pay was only increased a measly $0.60 cents per hour more than the starting wage, despite my excellent performance reviews and positive comments from the residents.
Since leaving The Woodlands, I have sorely missed many of the residents, and I hope for opportunities to reconnect with the people I met there in the future. However, I would not recommend that anyone work there until major changes are made.
We have had a good experience with the marketing team for the Woodlands expansion. Angela was warm and welcoming. The different phases of the expansion were explained in detail. We were shown the options for the new units. Angela listened carefully to our ideas and concerns about possible forthcoming options as some details are still being considered. We are looking forward to being part of the the family at the The Woodlands at Furman in 2021.
Since moving into the Woodlands in the fall of 2018, my wife and I have had heartwarming, positive experiences here - in spite of the challenges of the COVID 19 virus, the associated personnel shortages and the necessary structural changes. The staff has been superb in filling in the dining room personnel vacancies and we have been well-fed with tasty dishes; We enjoy the comfortable , well-maintained indoor and outdoor environment, the nearby Ollie programs and the multiple in -house activities available. So, our experiences at the Woodlands have been positive and we have expressed this in detail to friends, acquaintances and residents here. And, we have enjoyed making multiple friends in this fine community Thanks, Tom and Lucy Tiller
We have friends who recently moved to The Woodlands at Furman. The couple is very happy to live there - as are the residents we met. Because my wife and I are looking for such a retirement community, we visited the campus. It makes an excellent overall impression. The facilities, options, and the surrounding areas are indeed very attractive. The ready smiles of the staff is a very welcoming sign. The close association with the well known and highly respected university is an additional bonus. It is definitely a place we will seriously consider as our search continues.
