Good location...concierge ladies were not sufficient at all...little english...bus tour is expensive in the hotel....
Really nice location, across the street from must bigger, and pricier, hotels that know where to attract guests. Friendly staff, spacious rooms, fast wifi, in a historic building. Best of all, the rate was quite reasonable for this level of offering. Would stay here again if the prices and service stay the same. A hidden gem in this part of town.
For a room that smells of cigarette smoke with a shower that reeks of the smell of urine, this place is absurdly expensive. I probably could have dealt with it, but I was stuck in my room with a stomach flu for my entire stay in Chicago. In addition to the room being overpriced, the food was even more ridiculous. I couldn't leave my room to find more affordable food due to being so sick, so I was stuck with what I could get from room service. $30 later and all I'd had was a small bowl of rice and a cup of yogurt. At one point, I had called Dining to ask for some toast or bread and they said, "we're serving dinner right now, so we can't do that". When I pushed more and asked again if there's just any bread in the kitchen I could have because I have an upset stomach, the staff replied, "No sorry, we can't do that right now. Thanks, bye." and then hung up on me. So then I had to go on a search around the city just to find some freaking bread.
So, my suggestion: don't get the flu while you stay here and you might have a decent experience.
WAITED TO WRITE A REVIEW IN HOPES THAT I WOULD HEAR BACK FROM THEM, NEVER DID SO THEY GET A REVIEW. ENCLOSED IS THE EMAIL I SENT MANAGEMENT WHO DIDN'T CARE TO EVEN WRITE BACK OR ACKNOWLEDGE.
I am writing to you about mine and my girlfriend's stay at whitehall hotel this past July 4th weekend. We checked into the hotel and and came into a very hot room, the temperature was above 82 degrees since outside it was well over 90. We turned the A/C on thinking it would work and then left to go enjoy the day. We came back at night only to see our room was at 80 degrees still and then I went down to the front desk and it seemed like they were just trying to pass the buck or get rid of me. They said they'd send someone from maintenance up. The maintenance came and claimed that the unit was motion sensored. We accepted that theory since we didn't know and tried going to sleep. The A/c never worked in that room and we weren't able to sleep at all that night due to maintenance's lack of help or knowledge it seems. Finally we came back down the next morning and were switched to a new room with air conditioning that worked all the time without any issues or so called "motion". I am writing to you because I feel like the staff could've done a much better job about this situation, and also would appreciate it if I could get a refund for the first night's stay since it was absolutely awful. I don't live in Illinois and so when I do come into the state to see my girlfriend, hopefully in the future we don't have to run into this issue on the few days we have together.
The Whitehall is a very cozy, centrally located hotel, surrounded by shops and very close to Lake Michigan!
Very nice, spacious rooms, friendly and helpful staff. Good location and value for money good. The only downside is the unbearably loud heating / cooling, which sometimes makes sleeping impossible.
Don t waste your money. The room was absolutely nothing like the pictures, parking was 65/day for valet and 50/day for self park. What kind of hotel doesn t include parking for their customers?! Not to mention there was NO HOT WATER! If I could give zero stars I would. I can t explain how mad I am.
I stayed on the 19th floor with a gorgeous view of the city. The room was beautiful and you could tell that a good amount of money and time are spent making the appearance live up to the hotel's historic label.
Sadly, Chicago drivers use their horns for turn signals. So no amount of sound proofing will save you from the never ending horn blasts throughout the night. Also there are only shear curtains on the window providing a minimum of privacy but letting in an obnoxious level of light through to ensure you have a hard time sleeping.
The elevators are just large enough for two people and a cary-on bag. I realize that there is not much the hotel can do about that since it's a historic building but it does make for a very uncomfortable elevator ride if someone gets on at another floor.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. They even offered to print directions to a local restaurant and bring it to my room. The valet was the most kind and thoughtful person of them all. While waiting for my car we had a nice chat about the city history.
All in all, it was a pleasant stay in a beautiful room with excellent staff. Be prepared for noise and cramped spaces. Also be prepared for substantial holds on your credit card for incidentals. It comes off but for a 2 night stay, I had a $500 hold on my card before I even got the bill.
Beautiful hotel from the 30s, very well maintained. The room is very spacious, comfortable and decorated with very good taste
The pillows slide out from under your head. Also the beds are hard
It is a nice boutique hotel in the north of Chicago. The buses and red line are close by which makes things easy. In my opinion, the beds are very comfortable. So far, it s the best hotel bed I have slept in.
Similar to previous guests, I had problems with hot water at night. It seems to be a Chicago thing? It went back to normal in the morning.
EDIT: apparently, I was lucky that one day. I had cold water the entire stay. It was slightly warmer (but still pretty crisp) in the morning. That is definitely not acceptable for any hotel!
Unfortunately, I changed my review from 4 to 3 stars.
I d like to add that there is no free water when arriving as well as no mini fridge or coffee maker. Also, some of the staff seemed rather quirky. When asking for the directions to the Walgreens in order to buy a bus ticket, they were not able to provide a proper direction (it s only two blocks away...). There is room for improvement.
Mei s corner has excellent food. Goat cheese pizza and asain food.
Beautiful hotel, great service and very conveniently located.
Nice staff and the room was clean. Room was very rustic with very little outlets
Great hotel near everything. Needed a little updating, but was very clean and the staff was friendly.
Beautiful little hotel located super close to all the shopping areas.
Great Hotel , Very friendly front desk staff , Excellent location ...Very Close ...May be few hundred meters from Hancock Center ..Rooms are good size and housekeeping is great and room service too great ..
Excellent location although it is expensive, breakfast ok although service is somewhat slow
The staff was wonderful, but Wi-Fi was a bit confusing.
Hallways smell like a teenagers gym bag, hallway carpets were visibly soiled, no amenities in room, unfriendly staff. Would never recommend it for the money! I paid over $240 for one night after taxes and could have stayed at a much better hotel across the street for less money.
The staff made the week amazingly friendly. You feel like you were their friend.
Highly recommended.
I'll be back as soon as possible
I was not able to stay at this hotel due to scheduling mix ups and they were already booked but I still have to give them a 5 star for the customer service I experienced. At Mei's Corner, Sara was absolutely amazing host and genuinely cared as she made me feel better about my situation as I figured out a solution. The valet was also very courteous and waived parking for me instead of charging me for the few hours. I truly appreciate all the help I received.
The hotel was very nice. The sheets were very comfortable. The WiFi was solid.
You'd expect for the price they'd have a shower that worked. They fixed it, but still...made for an inconvenience.
Can't beat the location.
Great Location nearby Michigan Ave. Clean and comfortable rooms.
Great rooms, quiet, friendly staff, and great area. Room rate was a tad high but overall experience has been wonderful.
Nice inside and out, luxurious and spacious and very modern with friendly people. I deal with art so this Is perfect for decorating
The Whitehall was very elegant and the staff was very courteous. But the bed had a huge dip in the center. Not a very comfortable sleep. The location is perfect for a big time shopper, but if you're going for the city attractions (shedd aquarium, navy pier) you'd be better off staying somewhere else for that price.
Needs fridge, coffee maker, microwave in each room. Shower head are at my chest as a 5'11" male. Hotel seems clean though
Older hotel. Has an unusual vibe to it, but I would stay again. Be prepared to wait on the elevator, as they only hold 5 passengers.
The food was fantastic and the bar area was very unique with an amazing lounge feel.
This is the worst hotel I have ever been to. Not only was there food in our "just cleaned" bed but the valet left a eaten corn cob in our car with a trash bag. DO NOT stay here. I have never been treated with such disrespect after spending good money. Take your money elsewhere. This place is disgusting!! It doesn't even deserve the mandatory one star.
Luxorious beds. So comfortable I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow. Great staff...just a lovely experience.
Great location near the Hancock Tower and good service
I just stopped in for a drink at the bar. Cozy atmosphere and great service.
Hotel good but a little old. Fantastic location, large and clean rooms. The service was very good too. I do not know if the hotel has facilities such as a pool or gym. The only problem was that you can not open the windows for safety and the mechanical ventilation makes a lot of noise. Not recommended for people with difficult sleep. Everything else is correct.
Overall nice hotel but definitely older and could use some updates. Beds were super firm and the sink in our room didn't drain the whole weekend.
The one star is for Michelle at the front desk. She is awesome!
Hotel is old. The beds are hard. The water situation is terrible. It would not get hot. Called down they said let it run for 7 minutes. What?! This is a 4 Star hotel. Then we had to find the hot spot because the faucet could spin around the entire faucet. Our room was facing this wall. Elevators are small. Parking is very expensive $65 a day. I know it s pricey in Chicago to park. But they aren t that nice to charge this. This hotel is not 4 Star...nice decoration but not quality. But check out our bathroom ceiling...
Awesome place.. walking distance from John Hancock!! Great service!!
Convenient location to Michigan avenue but tucked away from the hustle and bustle. The rooms are modern and comfortable. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The price was great for the location.
Polite and super helpful staff! Went above and beyond daily! Will stay again! Super convenient location as a frequent visitor of the area
In reality, this is probably closer to 3.5 review. Older hotel than I was expecting from pictures, but clean, big room, and really no complaints other than the rooms looking like they could use an update. Some of the style is outdated, and wallpaper rising in certain areas where it should be fixed.
Nice room. Great location. Bathrooms are really small.
Very good location And the staff very friendly . Rooms spacious and very comfortable. Highly recommended
I had great experience here; the front desk was efficient, the elevator smelled nice, the room key worked every time, loved my king bed, bathroom was elegant, room service was easy and immediate. The room was quiet as long as there's no loading truck delivering right below my window side. I walked to the Magnificent Mile. Oh, the Chinese restaurant had great food. For all of these the price was unbelievable affordable. I stayed for 3 nights.
Very friendly and comfortable, great place to stay with pets.
Great hotel friendly staff! Very kind and helpful. However the water pressure in the shower is akin to some putting a Dasani bottle on a shower head and turning it over, also the faucet was very touchy. Other then that the beds were nice and firm and the bedroom was spacious and clean. They even have a 'help, I've fallen and can't get up' phone in the bathroom.
The staff at the Whitehall are very friendly. Be careful about even touching anything in the fridge or snack table unless you are willing to pay for it. Everything is weight sensitive so you will be charged regardless if you consume it or not. The shower pressure and head could use a lot of help.
Location is perfect and staff at reception desk was fantastic and very helpful. Only negative I would say is the rooms could use a bit more upkeep, wallpaper peeling off and broken/non functioning blinds. If you get a room near the gym or next to a trash chute the noise will be a bit much.
It was a good experience overall. The rooms were nice and clean, the staff was welcoming and there was no situations at all.
I liked our room, heard a banging through the night though. Courteous staff, very small elevator and waiting room. Yummy food, convient house call options
Love the location, rooms are spacious as well. Only complaint is I wish the the rooms had a microwave.
Well place needs to be updated and its all falling apart from the wall paper to the old discolored light switches...Place is clean and very small elevator keeps it original. Nice people that work here too.
Excellent room and very clean. Jason at the front desk was so welcoming and helpful. I will stay again
Good view of Lake Michigan and a great comfy place to spend the night. And very nice employees.
I had booked this room for my boyfriends birthday
When I called I specifically asked for a skyline view room, the guy on the phone said multiple times "yes we have one" and when I asked for the floor number he just said "dont worry it's a premium room, it has a view" he refused to give me a floor number (which was weird because I work at a hotel.. I know how these things go and this was a red flag)
Once we arrived we ended up getting a 3rd floor room... after being confused and asking the front desk he said "sorry were all booked" which I understood that he cannot do anything but if i would have known that there was no veiw i would have booked somewhere else. They waited untill I arrived and had already paid to tell me they did not have any views left... FALSE ADVERTISEMENT if you ask me. When I told the guys at the front desk what happened he just shrugged and said "we arent really known for our veiws anyway.. I'm booked" which if you're anywhere in downtown Chicago you have a veiw regardless starting on the 14th floor and up... So we spent the night in a wonderful (not) 3rd floor alley view room..
Also my room did NOT have a mini fridge? It had a hole in the dresser where one would go but no fridge? We had to request for a fridge to be brought to our room which was weird and ended up being broken anyway... not to mention the room wasnt completely cleaned. You could tell the housekeeper cleaned it very quickly and carelessly.
I will NOT be staying here again. Once I went to check-out and request for a manager they told me the manager would have to call me so i left my phone number... it's been 5 days and still no call. Tried calling them after 48 hours after checking-out to only be told to call back Monday. Are customers not a priority here?
This hotel is one of the best.. Anytime I book a hotel in Downtown Chicago the Whitehall is my #1 choice. From the staff to the clean rooms, and the old style victorian look. I love this place! WhiteHall Hotel keep up the good work!!!
Room had nice furnishings old antique style comfortable bed, bathroom just ok room was cleaned daily. Restaurant had delicious food well portioned and lovely ambience. Walking distance to plenty of shopping high end and value priced. I would stay here again.
We see a lot of good reviews of this hotel we decided to stay for 3 days get away from the heat of fl in September .. unfortunately fl been hit by Hurricane Irma over million people loss the Power including us . We didn't comfortable to leave my son and 2 dogs in the dark
We try to call the manager his name is Nick Gilagy to ask if we can change to different days because the rate we had no cancellation. Very Kindly and compassion he refunded the money back . I really appreciated that . He really don't have to do that . THANKS YOU !! Definitely we wiil go back there for sure next time
Great location and friendly, helpful staff. The gym is basic. There was a constant whirring sound from outside.
Dirty rooms, unfriendly staff. We didn't stay both nights because the bed was disgusting
Nice boutique hotel. Beautiful lobby and complete amenities. Would stay here again.
Not what I thought it would be.
They only had one robe in the room. The curtains in the window weren't hooked up. No coffee or tea.
The staff were friendly and the room had all necessary amenities. The location was very good with many restuarants and shops close by. Good value for money!
Lots of stairs....shared bathrooms for most part....not for me but did sleep well
Bed was very comfortable. Staff accommodating. Showers are small. Windows needed to be cleaned. Poor view (concrete wall) from our room.
Location good... Front desk helpful... No Ice or vending is the only bummer
The location is very convenient to shopping and the red line. Only negative so far is one elevator.
Comfortable, great location. Climate control a little temperamental. Nice staff
I thought it was a lovely little hotel with a good location. The staff was very nice and the room was clean!
For $98/night it was a great place to sleep downtown Chicago.
We stayed here a couple weeks ago and the bed was the most uncomfortable bed I ve ever slept on in my life. There were 3 of us and we were all extremely uncomfortable. The air conditioner also was not working. When we left to go out for the day I told the front desk and she said someone would come while we were out and reset it. We came back that evening to see that not only was it still hot but our room was never cleaned! Someone just came and knocked on the door and gave us a pile of new towels. The shower doesn t drain either. The only good thing about this hotel is the location,
Great rooms, great location! Right in the center of the best part of Downtown Chicago. Loved the experience, highly recommend!
Vary nice, boutique hotel reasonable price. A best keept secret.
Best weekend getaway, clean modern rooms only complaint really minor: was the remote to the tv are very slow other than that will be returning.
I was there to pick up a friend. The location is right beside the 360 Chicago attraction in a nice neighborhood away from the noise but still in the thick of downtown. My friend was very pleased about the rooms and service, and he has a preference for best-in-town kind of places.
