The steak and oysters were great! They do have oysters even tho they aren't on the menu (make sure to ask your server what they have that day). Don't bother with the gelato/ice cream for dessert tho. Pick something else
Food was outstanding, definitely try the smoked pork chop. Oysters were great, and nice selection of hot sauces. Absolutely enjoyed!
GET. THE. OYSTERS. We got the cheapest ones they had, so we weren't really expecting amazing oysters.... BUT THEY WERE AMAZING. They tasted so incredibly fresh! If you sit at the bar, you can watch the cooks shuck them right in front of you! I LOVE THIS PLACE!
I visited The Southern right around 4pm, I was sat immediately. Our server was timely and pleasant. I mainly get oysters for an appetizer and the filet as my meal. The Southern has some of the best oysters, I definitely recommend this place.
Food was cold. Sent back for a refire then nothing ever was served. Left hungry and disappointed
Food is ok they don't give you enough and overly prices
Great atmosphere and the Staff was very effecient. The oysters were fantastic !! I would recommend this restaurant highly.
Right in the heart of Nashville, good ambiance, lots of energy, and good food at reasonable prices. Waitperson for our table was friendly and timely, knew what she was doing.
Unbelievably friendly waiter named Matthew. You know that you're going to have a good time if he's looking after you! The food is fantastic, the crab cake appetizer satisfies the almost insatiable need for deliciously made seafood. The burgers are delicious. This restaurant has an unforgettably friendly and inviting atmosphere.
Hip atmosphere. The food was very good. I had the gumbo which I really enjoyed. I also ordered the Brisket. I was a little confused. I guess being from Texas I was expecting a BBQ type Brisket. This was a pot roast. Still good though.
Beautifully decorated restaurant. Delicious Southern food. Great wait staff!
Food is not worth how expensive this restaurant is. So many other great restaurants in Nashville. Nice to go once to experience it yourself.
Very Poor service and the food tasted like school cafeteria food.
Ate there 4-23-2013 for lunch in rounded booth with 4 other guests at 11:30. Got seated very quickly as we had reservations. Waiter was obviously not from the South as you will learn shortly.
His first comments were about the drink menu and oyster menu. "We don't have all the oysters on the menu so if you want to know what we have I can tell you". Still don't know what they had because he never told us.
Ordered Unsweet Iced tea to drink and as most put Splenda in the tea because I didn't want the sugar in the sweet tea. After 2 sips he is trying to fill the glass again which messed up the taste of the entire glass. We were having a business lunch and I had papers in front of me and he tried some long pour with the tea and spilled tea on my papers. No apology or recognition that it had even happened. I cleaned the papers and set them next to me in the booth for fear of it happening again.
Order was taken after he recommended a few options. I will go around the table.
1. Hot chicken salad was presented well and our guest enjoyed his meal. Got one right.
2. Meat and 3. Sucked!! The BBQ was so greasy that the bun was saturated in grease. The black eyed peas were obviously just poured from a can with no seasoning. the greens had stems that were way under cooked and no seasoning. No vinegar offered either. Fries were part of the plate but were not served because he was waiting on some fresh ones to serve. A few minutes later I was served cold fries, again with no seasoning. Everything on my plate was cold.
3. Fish tacos -- Black beans were from a can. they put 2 tacos on a plate the size of a garbage can lid that they got lost. We asked for a 3rd taco for our guest and the waiter said " I don't know if that can happen". What???
4. Shrimp PoBoy. Sandwich was good but the fries were so greasy they could be rung out like a sponge.
5. Cuban -- sandwich good. Fries sucked.
My suggestions would be to offer the waiter more training and get a chef that knows how to season the food. The meal was taste less and compared to cafeteria food.
We had a great meeting but the food experiance was second class at best. Would not recommend for a second visit. There are too many restaurants in Nashville to try this place again.
Hope this is helpful to whoever may read the reviews. From reading the above reveiws I doubt anyone at The Southern will do so.
Thumbs down on experiance. Thanks,
Amazing steak and great service. 12 ounce ribeye was my choice and I chose well!!
My only problem is when I ordered an appetizer of deviled eggs, there were five (5) halves that arrived at the table; there were three of us present. Why?! What happened to the sixth half? Why do they serve deviled eggs in odd number halves? Was one of our halves on the floor in the kitchen? Was the Chef enjoying 16.67% of their most delectable dish? I probably sacrificed and went without my second half; I'll have to go back for more!
Amazing find excellent staff and food to match. Oysters fresh and some great hot sauce to go with. We shared the crab cake hash and wanted more. But for a light brunch on a hot day the food drinks and service was spot on. See you soon my new friend.
a little high priced, but, fantastic food. Be going back in august.
Good but expensive for good. Steak frite was 3 stars and ribs were 4 or 5 stars.
The staff are very friendly and the food was delicious a lot of good flavours and the Texas ketchup and seasoned salt make for a even better taste on your meal, if you enjoy a bit of spice prices aren't too high and you can buy their seasonings and ketchup for a very good price about 6-9 dollars
Great food! Huge selection of top notch oysters. Best Oysters in town.
Didn t quite hold up on our second visit. Still good. The queso dip is amazing.
Our go-to for celebrations. Freshest, most delicious oysters in town. Consistently a great experience.
On Sundays they open at 930am, but if you're looking for an adult beverage they don't serve until 10
REALLY disappointed in oysters! Service was outstanding steak was very good.
Very unique experience the food was very tasty and filling.
The food is ok. The service was TERRIBLE!! For me to take the time to write a review for this place please know that myself and party were highly offended. We had reservations, ate and was told to surrender our seats. The attitude of the hostess and someone who seemed to be the manager were terrible. We left feeling like we ate trash just from the treatment.
I love Nashville and the city is growing and I am pleased to say that because of this place we have found far better restaurants that cater to their customers, exellent food and service. If the intent of a review is to voice your opinion this would be mine- the purpose of eating out other than nutrition is to socialize and enjoy your experience. This was not the case for us and our friends. Bad service often leaves a terrible taste in your mouth no matter the food! So if you are in for the full dining experience, in my opinion, this is not the place to eat.
Oh, I fail to mention we were also there to review them as a potential caterer for our wedding! Our budget was $20,000. EPIC FAIL! WILL NOT HAPPEN! AND NO RECOMMENATIONS FROM US! Of course this review may not hurt their reputation but I am speaking of my personal experience. If the service was any indication of their attitude towards their customers please understand that you DO NOT get what you pay for with this establishment. Not that it should matter but the two physicians at the table were in disbelief. Thank God for reviews and a place you can voice your experience.
Good spot right in the heart of downtown . The happy hour Oster special was a great deal and the drink are pretty good.
This place is great! Every time I come to Nashville, I make sure to stop by The Southern. The atmosphere is great and the food is even better. If you like steak then you can't pick a better place. They're also known for their oysters.
I took my wife here for our anniversary. We made reservations, so we were seated promptly upon our arrival. The atmosphere and decor is indicative of a new trendy Nashville restaurant - busy and high energy. Most of the dishes here are on the pricy side, averaging between $20 - $40 per plate, so we were expecting something really special from the food. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. My wife ordered the fish tacos, which were fairly spicy even though we told the server that she doesn't like spicy food. The black beans that accompanied the fish tacos were fairly basic and nothing to get excited about. I ordered the Fish and Grits, an even bigger disappointment. The fish, which I believe was halibut, was overcooked and dry, making this $32 dish a sad excuse for a meal. We should have sent both dishes back, but we didn't want to "be those people". So we ate, paid, and left...sadly, never to return.
A little pricier than the rest of Broadway but exceptional food and service
This place was excellent! The menu is great and all the food was outstanding. The atmosphere is amazing. Excellent choice for downtown Nashville.
Everything I've had here is amazing but the porkchop is absolutely incredible.
Dinner menu doesn't start until 5, but the appetizers are phenomenal.
Great food and a usually best during dinner times. Good oysters and always a great burger.
The double cut smoked pork chop was perhaps the best I've ever had! Juicy and delicious, it was cooked and flavored to perfection. The accompanying collard greens and mashed potatoes were perfectly prepared as well. Great place right off Broadway to get away from the craziness and bar food scene and enjoy some quality entrees.
Derrick is the man at the bar...he will solidly take care of you!
Not into oysters at all but the hot chicken salad is amazing. Best in the city. So good I can't bring myself to order anything else.
I really like The Southern. The Saffire Steak Biscuits are my favorite appetizer and the Southern Burger is one of the best burgers I've ever had. The limited menu makes dining with pickier eaters a bit difficult. It's a bit pricey, but not out of the ordinary for dining in downtown Nashville.
The food is always amazing and the selection of spirits is unbelievable.
So worth it! The best food we have had in sometime.
Fantastic place. My first time. A little pricey but best steak I have ever had.
My favorite restaurant in Nashville. I go here monthly and sometimes more. Chicken friend chicken and the New York strip steak are the best but I have had almost in there menu more than once. You need to go to this place. Wait in line if you don't have a reservation. It's totally worth it!
Simply the best ribeye ever. Wifey loved the halibut and cheesy grits, topped off with 2 each of the best drinks we'd ever had. A true favorite!
Just the most outstanding choices in meat. I had the The Belle and my husband had the 21 day aged steak. Both were phenomenal. Definitely go hungry it's a good amount of food. Casual too so you don't need to dress up so I suggest stretchy pants our waiter was super kind but not too annoying which is always awesome and refilled drinks quickly which always make me thirty hubby happy.
We had lunch at The Southern today and everything was phenomenal. The service was great and the food and drinks were better. We had the Southern Burger with White Cheddar mac n cheese and Blue cheese biscuits with sliced tenderloin. Absolutely delicious.
Loved the energy and decor in this place. The owner touched our table a couple of times and was very friendly and gracious. Great wait staff provides excellent menu recommendations and service throughout the meal, without being bothersome. Sides were tasty and everyone at our table loved their entree. The ribeye should not be omitted from consideration, it is Delicious. Will definitely go back on our next trip to Nashville.
The Southern is probably our favorite spot in downtown Nashville parking structure next door for 20$, inside this visit greeted for brunch with a 3 piece string ensemble, amazing. Huge bar with full menu, as well as oyster bar shuck right on que. Open kitchen concept beautiful decor, tons of tvs does have private dining room, and the coolest restroom sink I've ever seen. A must visit in downtown Nashville.
Food and service was very good. Really enjoyed the meal and the staff was very friendly and attentive.
Great place to enjoy a big variety of different oysters all across the US. The biscuits are really good as well. I recommend The Highway it's super delicious.
Great food. Hands down the best place we ate in all of Nashville
