Did you realise the Royal Mint was located in a small town just northwest of Cardiff? Me neither, but that's where it is and it's a lovely afternoon out.
The admission prices are reasonable and the tour guide was very knowledgeable. One piece of advice - DO NOT TRY TO TAKE PHOTOS INSIDE THE FACTORY! This is made very clear at the start, but there's always on person who tries their luck; on the tour I went on, it was a guy who worked at the Royal Mint!

Just after this section of the tour you get to see cases of the new 12-sided pound coin; and yes, this does mean shopping trolleys will have to change.
There's then an opportunity to walk thorough an exhibition at your own pace where there are hundreds of coins from all around the world for you to see.
All in all, it's a very pleasing afternoon out.

Great trip out, very informative! Learned a lot and enjoyed reading about the history of the mint. Shame your ticket price doesn't cover a coin you can stamp yourself (this being an optional extra) but don't let that put you off! Great for all ages with stuff for the kids to do.

Short tour but didn't get chance to see production close enough to see the coins that were being produced during our visit and would have been nice to have seen a sample of the coins they were working on during our visit . However some interesting facts and information.

While the kids are on break from school the Royal mint will be trading up to 5 new 10p for each person who visits between 10am to 2pm. Good opportunity to get 5 lettered new 10p's.

Good day out where you can have a tour of the site and you can press your own coin at the end of the tour.

We had a most enjoyable visit. We were perhaps fortunate that our tour numbers were small but our guide, David, was excellent. He obviously has a great knowledge of the Mint and it's history and he was able to impart this in a very easy going manner. At the end of the tour we could not believe how quickly the time had gone by. We spent some time in the museum afterwards and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Whilst David was our tour guide it would be wrong not to say how good and friendly all the staff on the site were. They were all ready and anxious to answer all of our questions.

Lovely, a little boring but i didn't go for myself, my other half is fascinated with coins lately and I guess this cured his curiosity. Lovely blonde older lady who guided us around gave an in depth, detailed, informative description of the royal mint. I didn't really find much interesting about the process of coin making, It seemed to me common sense, as if I already had that idea in my head anyway so no WOW factor to it.
We punched 3 coins and had a browse around at the end. Also bought a colouring book for our 6 year old which I thought was educational. Guess it's a place to say "yes I've been there" also great to know how much money they make every week, year and not only for the UK they make for Thailand ect..
my partner really enjoyed it though and he wants to work there. *eye roll*

Very informative! But delivered in an interesting and understandable way. I would say not for kids under 10 unless in a school group. Layout is easy and you could spend as little or as much time as you needed here. A word to the wise - DO NOT drink the coffee unless you like coloured water (americano) or hot milk (latte).

I've had experience with the royal mint for a few years now and have purchased several gifts and memories from them. One of my favourite was the Olympic 50p collectors folder. It gave the chance for young and old alike to share in the joys that is coin collecting and socialise by swapping. Not only was it well put together and well set out folder the fact that it was free of charge with any order made was an added bonus. I was lucky enough to get one and i can whole heartedly recommend them if they were ever to produce any more.

I am happy to pay a decent price for the folder instead of the rip off charges people are asking online such as ebay. I have nothing against making money but they have the folders for free and are making money at the Mint's expence.

Can the RM please create these folders even at a charge so that we know that we are getting a top quality product.

I went to the Royal Mint this time for the 10 pence coin swap. Where you give a 10 pence and you can swap it for one of the new alphabet 10 pences. Fortunately, this time the offer was each person could have 5 each, so with mam in tow we had ten. This offer was on for the week, so I went three days in a row and I now have a full set.
I have also done the Royal Mint experience and would highly recommend it. I found it very interesting /informative from start to finish.
Well done to the Royal Mint!!

What can i say that has not all ready been said, i to have all the 50p coins and nowhere to put them.
The Royal mint done us all proud just like a true olympian and done a great range of the 50p's and a great folder to put them in this will truly finish off what i would call a gold perfomance.
I was proud to a god farther only just a few weeks back and gave my godchild the 50p's what a keep sake i thougth untill i went to get a folderto put them in,i can not belive the world that we live in when it comes to get something that was free and to finish off a great collection is for sale on other sites.
So all i can say is well done for a great idea that helped friends and familys coming together on this special year.but sadly we all can't finish what we have started

Well worth a visit, the tour isn't too long that children will get bored and our guide Theodora was excellent, knowledgeable, upbeat and controlled the group well without being too obvious about it. She had a great way with the punters and really knew her stuff.
