I love this spot! A beautiful way to spend a long afternoon, their deck & views are fabulous, the beer flights were fun, the food was top notch....will return soon for sure. And I love the owner's mission of giving back to the community. Great local, family-owned business to support!

This is a very hard review to write because our experience was very conflicting. We went on 1/24/20 with family. The Hostess was very sweet and we didn't have to wait very long for the number of people we had. All the beer was amazing. The food was pretty close to terrible. Our server was less than warm. We had the chopped salad, burger, spicy pork sandwich, Southwest Salmon, kids mac n cheese, kids chicken, kids fish and chips, pretzel app, and the pickle and popper app. Everything besides the kids mac, chicken and southwest salmon was gross, under cooked or greasy soggy. I do not think we will be coming back to eat. I would like to come back for a beer. I was really disappointed because the beer is so good and there are not many brewery's that server food in the suburbs.

The Onion is a nice local choice. Not great, but nice. A safe choice. Nice selection of craft beers, 1/2 price Thursdays. Nothing exceptional but food is fine, moderately priced. Service is friendly but uneven.

Unvelievably disappointed with my "service" at the Onion. Do not spend your time planning your wedding at the Onion. We had our sights set. Spoke with Jamie Wilson several times regarding our reception. Spent 2 hours touring, 20 emails back and forth. Was told our date was open and were just waiting on updated 2019 pricing from the Onion to give our downpayment. Imagine my surprise when Jamie "forgot" we ever spoke and gave our date away to someone else. Surprising more effort wouldn't have been put into a big money generator like a wedding. I am heartbroken and scrambling to make my other plans fit into this unexpected venue change. What a headache this has caused. If there was ever a way to stress a bride to be out beyond belief, this is it. A big thank you to Jamie Wilson!! (:

A great restaurant! There food here is amazing, minimal wait for it, and the scenery is great. I've stopped by here a few times and I can tell you that it's one place you should definitely visit if passing through the town.

Unique food offerings (upset they took the sausages off the menu, but they did upgrade the pretzel appetizer) awesome bartenders and servers, and if you enjoy beer you should definitely check it out. Not your usual bar food here.

Delicious food! Nachos here are amazing. I ve had the lemon pepper chicken sandwich with homemade coleslaw and found it juicy, flavorful and a nice twist on your typical grilled chicken sandwich. Daughter had the Biscuits and Gravy burger and found the gravy rich and delicious. Very filling. Very satisfying meal!

This is the first time that I've been to The Onion, and I have to say my expectations were beyond exceeded! They have an amazing beer menu, and all of their beers are quite delicious. Their food menu is pretty extensive as well. We started out with the shrimp ceviche, which was delicious with the perfect amount of spice. For my entree I had the smoky mountain chicken sandwich, which had the amazing balance of blue cheese, bacon, and granny smith apples. I'm definitely returning, food and drinks are top notch!

Always a great time at Onion Pub! Very relaxed place to stop in for a quick pint. Had the new Otis IPA last night -- I'm new to IPAs and it was perfect -- lots of fresh hop flavor without being over bitter. Highly recommended.

It used to be one of my favorite places to go, but this time it was different. The menu was easily half the size it used to be. They were out of several of their beers early on a Saturday night. I ordered a $22 dollar steak that tasted weird, was not cooked well, and 1/3 of it was straight up fat. My family used to go here frequently, but after last night we sadly have no desire to return again.

Holy wow the food is amazing! Had the new chicken and waffles, highly recommend! Sat down, ordered an app and it came right out. Finished the app and our dinner was ready. I've literally never been served so quickly!

So very good. Great service. French onion soup was fantastic. And a true Shepherd's Pie! (Made with lamb, not beef!). My ONLY criticism would be to have the filling thicker in the pie (a little too much gravy for me). But it was great. Will definitely be back.

Frankly, I love the Onion; and this is a place me and my family visit quite frequently. However, there have been a few changes lately, that make me go slighly down on the rate, and allow me to explain here.

Now, both inside and out the place looks like a log cabin and its sitting next to a small lake. They also have an outside patio with a view on this lake, which I love summertime. The interior is all wood, looks super nice, ceilings are very high, and a tons of decor all over the place. The place is quite roomy, and I think I've encountered a waitlist just once, and it wasn't that long. There is also a huge parking lot, so you're unlikely to have any problems with that, mostly because the Onion features a hall for like weddings and this kind of events; so it is designed to fit a lot of people.

To the food, now, it has always been tastly here and the portions are quite generous, however, they've significantly cut the menu lately, leaving you with a lesser choice. One thing that appered to be unexpectedly small, was the Spinach Artichoke Dip (served in a bread), which was delicious nonetheless. Burgers are amazing too, I especially love those topped with onion strings, or their side of Onion Petals - no surprise, considering the place is named after those.
They are also a brewery, and the beer selection is decent, while Hefty Weiss is one of the best brews I've ever tried. Although last time, 3 pints of it left me with a terrible hangover the following morning, which never happened before...

Every time I've been here, service was just fine. Nothing extraordinary, but nobody was ever rude and there was no much food wait either. It is fine.
Place is mostly clean, but men's bathroom that should've been getting more attention from the staff.

And to the huge pro in the end, which is pricing, average check per two have always been in 50-s range after tax, which is good and fair.

Overpriced, mediocre food. The taste is similar to what you would expect at a cheap diner. My daughter's mac and cheese was bland. Some of the cabbage in our cole slaw tasted like it had gone bad already. We were charged $13 for a glass of peach Moscato! I think the only thing that was excellent was their wheat ale.

My husband and I got married at The Onion Pub and Brewery on the 3rd of July. We had a long engagement so we had plenty of time to plan but Jaime made it super easy! First of all the Great Hall is extremely reasonable compared to some places we went, plus the place is absolutely gorgeous! If you want an outdoor ceremony I highly highly suggest The Onion. Their terrace overlooking the lake is to die for and so is the food! Overall we just had an absolutely perfect wedding due to Jaime and the workers at The Onion. I still have people complimenting me on how nice it was.

Visited yesterday. The waitress was awful. Very abrupt and rude. She was asking us to hand her all our plates and silverware when we finished our meals and said I don t have a bus boy today . That s not our problem as customers. The food was very good however. We visited a few months ago and sat at the bar where we had an amazing lady serve us. Disappointed to return for quite the opposite.

They used to have a great menu, then they changed everything about a year ago, and now their food selection is mediocre like a cheap dive bar. No longer serve our favorite Polish sausage. The beer that they brew here is pretty good, their signature Oatmeal Stout has a lot of rich flavor.

Atmosphere is also just OK, recently they started being gimmicky by playing loud obnoxious music (high treble) through their speakers which they didn't do before, we had to ask our server to turn the volume down. Not what it used to be where it's just the regular atmosphere you can relax in.

Overall it used to be at the same level as Emmits in Palatine, but now this place has gone downhill with the food and atmosphere. They need to improve and go back to their roots.

A while back would have given a 4 star rating but the last couple of times it seemed the quality of food and service has diminished.
It is a nice place, however it seems the ambiance has changed and the food is a bit pricey for the quality. Based on last visit, had better tasting food from local chain establishments for half the price.
Okay beer and wine selection but really nothing unique from other places. Even the appetizer menu changed to contain basic nacho type fare that can be had elsewhere.
There is optional valet parking but unsure why other than restaurant is in Barrington.
There is nothing wrong with eating here but there are so many other similar establishments that provide better value and equal or greater quality, it might be a while before we go back.

A hidden gem in the suburbs. Never imagined to stumble on to this place and I'm kinda sad it seems to be getting more and more popular. The normal beers are very good but the seasonals are just plain awesome. Golden Ale and Imperial Pilsner are some of my hands down favorites ever. The food is almost more impressive then the beer though! They change the menu by season and have been the most consistent restaurant as far as quality goes that I've been to in recent memory.

Great food and drinks (especially the drinks). The outside dining and footpaths along with the on site brewery add to a good time for all. Only complaint that I had was the interior dining area can be extra noisy compared to other restaurants, go outside if possible.

I love this place. Got some the Rachel and onion rings for carryout today. Their Rachel is not turkey but pastrami, and its house made and smoked, very tasty. The onion rings are perfect. And I brought some of the brews home, can'twait to try the crowler of pineapple hopslayer in a bit. The patio looks like an awesome place to dine also. I was alone today so brought it home.

I really want to like this place, but the last couple of times I went they were either closed for a private function or we were parked in a corner because they had a private function going on. After a couple of these visits we just stopped coming here.

My wife and I came here for a wedding in 2012and had the most wonderful time. The food was outstanding and the beer was delicious. We came in the fall and I must have had 6 pints of the pumpkin brew. The whole building is very unique and well appointed. We will definitely make a trip out here again for a special occasion.

I enjoyed coming here after work (considering the fact that I work right behind this place), and would have given The Onion 5 stars based on the quality of their food and beer...however, the Chef Colin is a complete jerk and should not be allowed to sit at the bar when he is off his shift. This "kid" is completely full of himself--he talks about how he is the reason why this business is thriving and how his climb to head chef is a testament to how great he is. I complimented him on his wing recipe and he proceed to tell me he did not like my attitude following a half way decent conversation about cooking food. I will not be returning so long that this chef is working here and roaming about. Hire a chef with some real experience and tell this Colin kid to grow up.
