Amazing food and atmosphere. Would come back purely for the New Zealand waitress.

Great hotel, great food, service and atmosphere. Rooms very charming and characterfull.
Good service. Great atmosphere. Need to reserve way in advance.
The food was delightful. The Ossobuco was cooked to perfection and very tasty. The mash potato was delish.
Would highly recommend The Middle House.
Lovely view from the new modern terrace area out the back, great place for a long Sunday afternoon lunch, the roast was good, staff very attentive
As a special treat we went for afternoon tea, it was exceptional. Beautifully presented, generous & tasty. Stunning views. Staff were welcoming with great service.
Great food & a lovely contemporary, relaxing decor. Definitely recommend!
Popped in for lunch as were driving by. The restaurant was due to open at 6pm so we settled in the pub and ordered local gin while waiting for food. The place was cozy, full of history which you could read on the back of their menu. Not expecting much from pub food we were pleasantly surprised by its quality in The Middle House and the level of service. My tomato soup was lovely, with a hint of bacon complimented by fresh out of the owen bread and salty butter. For mains we ordered the mixed meat roast and lambs liver, both served well and cooked to perfection. Happy customers!
The food is always good, Monday evening there is a carvery with a choice of ham, turkey, pork and beef served with various vegetables etc. It has been run by the same family for over 30 years and it is always busy with a good atmosphere.
Recommended by a friend my husband and I went to Middle House a couple of weeks ago for the Monday Carvery. excellent meal. Lovely fresh mixed salads for starters with super fresh bread. Then beef, gammon, pork and or lamb served with the More
Amazing not been there for 16 years and Brian was still there and looked the same 'brilliant food as always a fabulous pub you must visit.
Lovely old pub with good quality food and staff. A favourite.
Lovely afternoon tea plenty too eat , friendly staff that gave a good service ,i look forward to going back again.
Great food, great service, beautiful historic building
Very pleasant way of enjoying the finest of Harvey's
Amazing service and the food was absolutely incredible. So impressed with how quickly everything came considering how busy it was and obviously COVID. Will definitely be going back!!
Excellent food (corn chowder and lamb's liver and bacon for me and pork and apple for Margaret). We had no room for pudding. Tables and chairs widely spread out in bar. Didn't look in front and back restaurant but were open, unlike new rear garden view with bi-fold doors.
Every time we visit The Middle House both the service and quality of food is impeccable, definitely a pub above the rest...please bring back the duck dish!!!!
Absolutely delicious food for a very reasonable price. Would highly recommend.
Great food and very friendly staff, not the cheapest but we'll worth it
FANTASTIC pub, FANTASTIC Food, FANTASTIC cold beer, FANTASTIC flavours, FANTASTIC atmosphere. A real gem, we came today for lunch. Real family friendly vibe, amazing food - off this planet! and all the staff were friendly and helpful. we will definitely be returning. Thank you
Stopped off at this lovely quirky pub/hotel. Looking forward to returning
A lovely old fashioned pub. Now with a very modern restaurant extension.
The bar area is a little dark and can be very crowded.
The food is amazing , with large potions of very good meals.
The service is good and staff pleasant.
There is a nice garden out the back.
There car park can be a little difficult to negotiate. But there is always the option of parking in the high street.
Defiantly worth a visit.
Absolutely fabulous. Good, honest elegant and friendly with it. Great staff to go with the fine dining. Fab food from a varied menu. Excellent. Cannot wait to go again.
Visited there this afternoon with some friends who are local and have been there many times. The lady behind the bar did not smile at all and the looks we got were as if we were from another planet. One member of staff muttered something to another member of staff.I ordered a glass of wine and the barman put ice in it !!!! The whole atmosphere was unfriendly and would not return again..Even one star is one too many
Lovely cream tea - good fillings in the sandwiches- fabulous selection of cakes and scones
Lots of teas to choose from
Great service and beautiful views - yummy
Lovely place great food and drinks always leave feeling very full.
Best vegetarian burger I've ever had! Apparently the roasts were amazing too. Lovely, friendly staff in a beautiful old pub. I'd definitely recommend it!
Very good food ..it is more on the expensive side but worth it for a treat...loved the older style interior not so keen on the new glass look
Really really great atmosphere, very hospitable and truly amazing tasting food. Would highly recommend.
We had afternoon tea booked for a birthday. Advised them of dietary requirements. Their solution was to take out half of the sandwiches and cakes that may contain a certain ingredient. They could not offer any alternatives so we were left with only two types of cake and two varieties of sandwiches . Hardly an afternoon tea !! We were charged for the full afternoon tea plus more as we had a small child with us who wasnt included in the original booking. It was a disappointment from start to finish. Service was terrible, having waited for 15 minutes while the waitress was standing and chatting with another table of customers. One of the worst dining experiences in a long time.
Nice surroundings in the garden, and a very tasty vegan nut roast.
Great food regular menu changes, lovely food and nice views, a really old building.
Waiting for friends to arrive, sitting in front of a roaring log fire set the mood for a wonderful evening. Food, beer, wine and service was outstanding.
Fantastic pub! 15th century charm with a modern twist out the back, great freindly staff, great atmosphere, superb pricing.
Can't wait to get back to sample more of the fantastic fare!
Thanks to all staff for a truly remarkable welcoming.
Great historical pub in a lovely village. Food excellent!
Fantastic food. Great beer. No complaints. Very much recommended.
Great place , clean and organised. The staff did everything they could to make me feel safe.
Wonderful food. Good parking. Great service. Only downside is the prices.
Excellent food twice now! Worth it for the wonderful cider, great views and cosy inside.
Fantastic food served by friendly and very helpful waitresses. The Harvey's ale was spot on too. Will definitely be going back.
Five of us had lunch here. We each had something different. All agreed that the food was excellent
Such a stunning historic building inside and out. Lovely open fires and lots of character. The food was delicious, and reasonably priced with lot's of choice for every appetite. Staff were very friendly and helpful, good service. Will definitely be back
We always enjoy a lovely meal when visiting. Best around.
Fantastic food and service! Wonderful atmosphere and staff..comes highly reccomended!
I'D ALWAYS assumed that Mayfield was just another East Sussex village. My friend Jan puts me right. It's a medieval village. Well, I never. She knows because her mother lives near by: "And there's a hotel called the Middle House where you might like to stay."
The name intrigues. Arriving, we find that the Middle House really is in the middle of the High Street. It's the star turn in fact: a sprawling, heavily timbered Elizabethan building very much part of and yet standing out from the rest of the street. In the car park at the back, there are two wonderful views: endless rolling countryside on one side and terraced gardens leading up to the ancient hotel on the other.
Pushing open the large oak front door we step straight into an entrance hall with a massive carved fireplace (Grinling Gibbons, I later discover), in which a huge fire burns. There are masses of dark red leather buttoned sofas and armchairs to sit on - or there would be if only there weren't hundreds of people already sitting on them.
A member of staff takes us upstairs to our first-floor front room - at first glance, a bit ramshackle (well, it's old) - all ancient fireplace, black beams and white walls. It is noticeably cold and the first thing she does is nip over to the window wall where there's an electric radiator: "I'll just pop this on."
"Only one bedside lamp," notes my husband when she's gone. "So, only one of us can read." "What's that cord hanging on the wall behind the bed?" I inquire. Ahem. He pulls it. Two not-too-bright overhead lights wink down.
Downstairs, I can almost smell the history. Ensconcing ourselves on one of those red leather sofas, now bereft of bottoms, we get into conversation with some local men who entertain us with stories of priest holes, tunnels, prison cells, murder most foul . . .
"And as I haven't had a steak for ages, I'll have the rib eye with brandy and peppercorn sauce," he says. When the waitress appears, he checks out the options: "Blue, rare, medium rare and well done," she reels them off. I go to the other extreme and opt for cranberry and chestnut strudel with orange and cashew nut sauce.
The Middle House boasts that its heavily oak-panelled and carved restaurant is "one of the most magnificent in England" with "outstanding cuisine" - in which case, starched white napkins instead of paper ones would add to the sense of occasion. I like it in here - it's dim, crowded and atmospheric - and I like my first course, too, its richness leavened by lots of nice crisp salad. My husband nods. Yes, he likes his mozzarella salad - lots of mozza - and declares the tomatoes truly sun-blessed.
But he's not so keen on the steak. It's the sauce. "There's such a lot of it, I can hardly taste the steak." Halfway through my very large strudel, I begin to feel queasy, but plough gamely on: "This is what I call old-style vegetarian food: very nutty, lots of sweet gravy, slices of orange, very sweet puff pastry. Good in small doses . . . "
For pudding, my husband orders Death by Chocolate. "You've done that to challenge me," I accuse him. "No, I've done it because I like chocolate." I ask for lemon sorbet in a tuile basket. Both puds come with little
Very good Christmas party. Meal good standard. Good selection of cheeses.
Excellent food, excellent service nice surroundings
Excellent fare, and friendly and helpful staff. Hadn't visited for a long time, but remembered just as good as last visit. Well worth a visit if you're in the village.
Gorgeous (huge!) afternoon tea. Lovely staff. Quaint old pub with open fires.
It's always good, one of the rare places you can go and guarantee great food...
Fantastic Christmas Dinner. Staff great. Festive atmosphere. Highly recommended.
