I use to go to The Door when I was 12 years old and older with my brother and our friends. When I was their I always had a blast of a time. The counselors at that time were excellent. They really cared about people. The Door had great activities like pottery & art shows medical and programs like manpower and other programs for women too. When I was Their I became the store girl I sold snacks on the main level.I enjoyed playing basketball their on basement level, medical was excellent and private loved it!And mind you this was in the early 90's! Lol,smh the good ol days!At that time they also help people get there G.E.D diploma but......I have my High school diploma. I'm just grateful to have experienced the door in my life and wouldn't mind my children going in the near future God bless all!
The service this place provides to the youth is invaluable
The door is an awesome program i am a current member they helped pick my life back up after i was on the street for so long i love them so very much they are so kind and experts at making peopel happy
I worked at The Door for a few weeks before I decided to place my 2 weeks notice I refuse to be under the leadership of a CEO that does not truly care about the mission of this organization. The employees are not happy. The CEO walks around calling employees "kid" instead of addressing them by their name.
How could we care about the children of tomorrow when you do not even engage with them. His main focus has been to collect donations.
Truly saddens me.
I had a great expirience here:-) this place saves lives:-)
The health staff is rude and don't like to do their job.
Honestly been going to them for a while. They are great. Staff where supper welcoming, been having there service since about 16 an Im now 20 an have no complaints.
If I could give a lower review, I would. This place is only good for the money they throw for their Christmas party. They're not organized, knowledgeable, or courteous. Do not go here if you value your time, because they do not provide the actual services they state. The staff are not educated on the matters of the homeless and lgbtq communities, and furthermore, you are constantly monitored in the facility.
I for one support the door and all of its services respect to mis Helen Zimmerman and staff nyc any problem of staff and there obligations refer to the 911 operator NYC
the variety of services they provide for the youth for free wow you can't find that elsewhere
I love the community, the staff, and the friends I've made there!
When I was 17 this program helped me so much! I learned a great skill that turned into a career, gave me free medical care, great food, and also valuable free legal guidance. I don't know what I would have done without this program living on my own at such a young age. I wish every city had something this amazing! This place and all the contributors / have a very special place in my heart. I went from feeling all alone and hopeless to motivated and cared about. Love you guys, please don't ever stop this program :-)
I understand that they do a lot of good for the community -- but they could hire more intelligent staff.
It says "serving ages 16-24" very clearly on their website. When I came, after hour of commute as a 24 year old, they refused my service.
I had to argue with their, presumably educated staff, the literal definition of "16-24". My goodness, they still didn't understand.
For some reason the new staff are kicking out youth for JUST being homeless amd with no viable reason. Wow. Good job.
Great place, I only went for sexual health but everyone was so understanding. Everything is free and they don't notify parents either. There are also other programs
Sadly, if you go here to try and get your GED.. Don't ! I was a student here just trying to better myself and further my education, but yet was punished for it. I passed all my classes came in did what I had to do and leave. While I was there I was mocked by the supervisor she was disrespectful and gave me a hard time when I needed help and at times it was like I was not even allowed to have a bad day or I was threatened to be kicked out of the program. I got along well with my teacher the students and a counselor who wasn't even mine cause the counselor I had was rude as hell anyways it was a horrible experience but I stuck through it. I had to leave because I moved and found out I was pregnant. When I tried to reach out a few months later I didn't get so much as a text back from the supervisor she didn't acknowledge my effort to try and do the right things only when I did something she did not like. This place is supposed to have people who want to help not turn their backs when you need help but it's okay I'm enrolled now into a ged class and almost ready to take my test . I will never come here for anything ever again
If your not in foster care or out of school don t waste your time
This is one of those places which are beyond grading. The services they provide to the young people is incomparable. They are the reason many of us get a second life. :)
They have help me with my papers... Great service. Uniqud
My first time reviewing this workshop saw it on PBS August 13th 2018 interested my mind I am a senior I wish I had those services when I was younger. Still reviewing will checking again.
In my personal experience, and with information provided by those close to me, they do not have staff entirely equipped to handle LGBT issues, sexual harassment, stalking, and especially if the predator is a minor and the victim is an adult. They do not notify transgender people that there is a transgender bathroom. They are not size friendly with their clothing closet and do not have anything actually concrete to help homeless individuals.
I have been coming here since the age of 15. An amazing place!!!! Love the door! Thank you!!
They need to have CLEAN BATHROOMS FOR ALL THOSE YOUTH THAT COME THEIR IS BASICALLY ONE BATHROOM ON THE FIRST FLOOR IS HIDIUS AND DISGUSTING THEY NEED TO FIRE MAINTENCE GUY THY NEED TO RENOVATE this place the place needs to be renovated with bathrooms they lunch people are cheap they don't even offer juices at lunch they should have ice machines and various snacks and drinks they need to look into who is budgeting the money
They helps the people and they are nice people..God bless all of you!!
They do anything for the homless kid and kick out the transgender kid and special needs kids
It is a very good association to help young people and much more ......
The door helped me apply for college, offered free counseling, and gave me a warm meal when I first arrived to this country. I ve become a nurse now and I can t thank it enough. We need more places like this.
The door is a decent place and it all depends on which staff member you work with. I had a horrible experience with one of the receptionist, she would be very rude towards me. The dentist straight up lied to me about not having any cavities. However, my primary doctor here is great at what she does. The therapist wasn t too bad either.
Gave me a life changing experience. I am forever grateful.
